Chosen by Kent and released in 1985, Brewster's Millions was directed by Walter Hill and produced by Lawrence Gordon, Joel Silver and Gene Levy for Universal Pictures. Hill was best known for tougher, more muscular films like The Warriors, The Driver, 48 Hrs. and Streets of Fire, so seeing him take on a broad Richard Pryor comedy is one of those wonderfully odd 80s career turns that makes perfect sense only after three pints and a VHS rental card. The screenplay came from Timothy Harris and Herschel Weingrod, the writing duo behind Trading Places, adapting George Barr McCutcheon's much-filmed 1902 novel for a new generation. The film stars Richard Pryor, John Candy, Lonette McKee, Stephen Collins and Hume Cronyn, with music by Ry Cooder. Made on a reported budget of around $15 million, it earned roughly $45 million worldwide, making it a solid box office performer even if critics were not exactly fainting into their notebooks with admiration. Over time, though, Brewster's Millions has become a comfortable 80s comedy favourite: high-concept, fast-moving, packed with familiar faces, and built around the kind of premise that still feels weirdly irresistible. Who among us has not wondered whether we could ruin our lives with $30 million and a strict deadline?TRAILER GUY PLOT SYNOPSISMonty Brewster is a struggling minor league baseball player with a loyal best friend, a modest bank balance, and absolutely no idea that his entire life is about to be turned into the world's most expensive practical joke. When a mysterious inheritance lands in his lap, Monty is offered a fortune beyond his wildest dreams. But there is a catch. To claim the real prize, he must spend $30 million in 30 days, without telling anyone why, without keeping any assets, and without accidentally making a profit. Which sounds easy, until you realise money has a nasty habit of sticking around when lawyers are watching.FUN FACTSBrewster's Millions is based on George Barr McCutcheon's 1902 novel, which had already inspired several earlier film and stage adaptations before the 1985 version. The story had been filmed multiple times before, including silent and early sound-era versions, making this one of Hollywood's most recycled “sudden fortune with a catch” premises.Peter Bogdanovich was originally attached to direct before Walter Hill took over the project.Walter Hill later described Brewster's Millions as his only true comedy, which is quite the detour for a director usually associated with action, crime and tough-guy cinema. The fictional Hackensack Bulls were created for the film, giving Richard Pryor and John Candy a very 80s underdog sports-comedy setup before the inheritance plot kicks in.The baseball stadium scenes used a standing set originally built for the short-lived TV series Bay City Blues. The film's New York setting gives it that glossy mid-80s city energy, where everyone appears to be either very rich, very stressed, or about to be shouted at by a lawyer.Rick Moranis appears in a small supporting role as Morty King, adding another familiar 80s comedy face to the cast.Support the Show If you enjoy the show and would like to support us, we have a Patreon here. Walter Hill's, 1987 neo-western, might have its faults, but it also has one of the greatest casts of the decade, is wonderfully shot, and above all else, is home to a genuinely elite Nick Nolte performance. It's Streets of Fire, one of the oddest mainstream summer movies of the eighties; a feature-length music video that is equal parts western, Road Warrior dystopia, Blade Runner quasi future noir, and Berlin sex club fashion show! It's Diane Lane, Michael Paré, Rick Moranis, and Willem Dafoe at his palest and most consumptive in Walter Hill's confounding valentine to toxic masculinity! Welcome back to the second stop on Sarah's tour of liminal space movies, and this week we're descending into the 1973 cult cinema classic, Messiah of Evil. It's the film that sparked this entire season, and while it might have sat on a shelf for years, it's currently having a bit of a second coming on the pod. We're breaking down the dreamlike logic of Point Dune (formerly new Bethlehem) and exploring why this film feels so much like David Lynch's style, even though it was hitting screens before Eraserhead was a glimmer in Lynch's eye. We discuss directors Gloria Katz and Willard Huyck ambitious artistic vision and how editor Scott Conrad (of Rocky fame) managed to piece together such an atmospheric experience from a production that literally ran out of money. Beyond the hanging beds and important Mr Blobby tangents, we wade through the claret to get to the iconic supermarket scene to discuss the consumerist ghoul angle. Dan finds a rare moment of connection between the film's hand-painted murals and his own Dad's late-night black-tape art projects, while Sarah defends the Dick Smith neon-lurid blood recipe as peak 70s cinema aesthetic. What to expect in this episode: A breakdown of why Walter Hill's throat-slitting open features the loudest shoe foley in the history of cinema. Sarah explains why the weird movies energy of Messiah of Evil was the specific catalyst for this entire season of liminal space movies. Dan reveals why he'd rather be watching Noel's House Party. Discussion around the true liminal space horror of derelict theme parks and Mr Blobby World. The obvious but necessary comparisons to David Lynch. We explore the logistical genius of the hanging bed and why it's the ultimate space-saver unless you live in the Sistine Chapel. Sarah geeks out over the peak 70s era production design, including the Michael Greer white suit and those polyamorous drifter arrangements. We suggest which scenes would have been improved with swapping characters out for clones of Noel Edmunds in a Mr Blobby costume. GLORY, the powerful 1989 historical war drama directed by Edward Zwick, tells the story of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, one of the first all-Black units in the American Civil War. The boys are back for 2026, and they are not easing into it gently. Born to Watch kicks off the new year with a full-blooded dive into one of the most aggressively 80s action films ever put on VHS shelves, Walter Hill's Extreme Prejudice (1987). Cowboy hats, cocaine, mercenaries, sweat, testosterone and a whole lot of unexplained shoulder shots, this one has it all. In this Extreme Prejudice (1987) Review, Whitey, Gow and Damo reunite as the A-team and take on a film that feels like The A-Team pilot collided head-on with a dusty Western, then detonated somewhere on the Texas–Mexico border. At the centre is Nick Nolte at peak brooding intensity, playing a stone-faced Texas Ranger chasing his childhood friend, now a drug-running psychopath in a pristine white suit, played with unhinged gusto by Powers Boothe.Directed by action legend Walter Hill, Extreme Prejudice is the kind of movie that barely pauses for breath. Secret military units officially declared dead, renegade majors, bank robberies, double-crosses, unnecessary nudity and a final act so chaotic it feels like an entire missing movie has been cut out, which, as the boys discover, is pretty much exactly what happened. The cast reads like an 80s action villain roll call. Michael Ironside growls his way through another morally questionable authority role, Clancy Brown looms menacingly, William Forsythe perfects the art of being deeply hateable, and a young Larry B Scott pops in an action film after Revenge of the Nerds turned him into a cult comedy icon. Add in Maria Conchita Alonso, singing badly on purpose, and you have a film bursting at the seams with characters who all look like they should be in different movies. As always, the boys break it down properly. Overs and unders are debated, including the uncomfortable realisation that Extreme Prejudice may make perfect sense if you're sixteen and not at all if you're over forty. There's deep discussion about whether Nick Nolte smiles even once in the entire film, spoiler, he does not, and whether anyone in the 80s understood centre-mass shooting. The Nut-Tuck-Yourself SAG Awards get a workout, with Nolte's pre-Prince of Tides physique under the microscope, and the Snorbs Report pops up exactly where you expect it to. Box office numbers are crunched, Walter Hill's career is put into context, and the boys try to work out how a film with this cast, this director and this level of explosive excess somehow lost money.Film School for F-Wits returns with a look at Hill's obsession with male-driven action cinema, while Hit, Sleeper and Dud for 1987 reminds everyone just how stacked that year really was, from Predator and Lethal Weapon to the absolute disaster that was Revenge of the Nerds II.Add in listener feedback, voicemail chaos, bird-related accusations, corn beef confessions, and a reminder that Born to Watch never takes movies, or itself, too seriously, and you've got the perfect way to start the year. This is sweat-soaked, ridiculous, deeply flawed 80s action cinema, and the boys wouldn't have it any other way.JOIN THE CONVERSATIONIs Extreme Prejudice peak 80s action excess, or just glorious nonsense?Does Nick Nolte smile even once in this movie? Is the final act pure chaos genius, or a missing half-hour of film?Listen now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or at BornToWatch.com.auBorn to Watch, because some movies demand to be watched, argued over and mildly roasted.#BornToWatch #ExtremePrejudice #80sActionMovies #WalterHill #NickNolte #ActionMoviePodcast #CultAction #VHSClassics #MoviePodcast #80sCinema

fWotD Episode 3150: The Getaway (1972 film) Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Friday, 19 December 2025, is The Getaway (1972 film). The Getaway is a 1972 American action thriller film based on the 1958 novel by Jim Thompson. The film was directed by Sam Peckinpah and written by Walter Hill, and stars Steve McQueen, Ali MacGraw, Ben Johnson, Al Lettieri, and Sally Struthers. The plot follows imprisoned mastermind robber Carter "Doc" McCoy, whose wife Carol conspires for his release on the condition they rob a bank in Texas. A double-cross follows the crime, and the McCoys are forced to flee for Mexico with the police and criminals in hot pursuit.Peter Bogdanovich, whose The Last Picture Show impressed McQueen and producer David Foster, was originally hired as the director of The Getaway. Thompson came on board to write the screenplay, but creative differences ensued between him and McQueen, and Thompson was subsequently fired, along with Bogdanovich. Writing and directing duties eventually went to Hill and Peckinpah, respectively. Principal photography commenced February 7, 1972, on location in Texas. The film reunited McQueen and Peckinpah, who had worked together on the relatively unprofitable Junior Bonner, released the same year. The Getaway premiered December 19, 1972. Despite the negative reviews it received upon release, numerous retrospective critics have reevaluated the film positively. A box-office hit earning over $36 million, it was the eighth highest-grossing film of 1972, and one of the most financially successful productions of Peckinpah's and McQueen's careers. A film remake of the same name starring Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger was released in 1994.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:56 UTC on Friday, 19 December 2025.For the full current version of the article, see The Getaway (1972 film) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Bluesky at @wikioftheday.com.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Matthew.
