Another time, another place. That time? 1984. That place? The movies! Where a rock & roll fable was born, yet no one watched it at the time. In America, anyway. In Japan, someone saw it. A few someones. A few someones, that would go on to make some of the coolest anime and video games around. Now, in 2025? It's the perfect time to go back to that another time, and another place. To go back to the 1984 cinematic cult classic, that is the theatrical film Streets of Fire. Or at least we did. You should too!OSMnotesSadly right now there is no easy to way to just find a handy dandy streaming service to watch Streets of Fire, but it's around to buy digitally…or even physically!Streets of Fire, How to Watch and/or Buy:Stream on Devices that Streamon Amazon Video (Buy or Rent)on Apple TV (Buy or Rent)on Fandango At Home (Buy or Rent)Buy on Blu-Rayon Amazonon Shout! On this episode, I chat with writer, educator, film historian and friend of the pod Rich Johnson about two classic car movies: The Driver (1978, directed by Walter Hill), and Drive (2011, directed by Nicolas Winding Refn). We talk at length about the influence of the Western in both these films, the lineage of great car chase movies, and the importance of soundtrack in building a narrative with a (mostly) silent protagonist. Sam Clements is curating a fictional film festival. He'll accept almost anything, but the movie must not be longer than 90 minutes. This is the 90 Minutes Or Less Film Fest podcast. In episode 136 Sam is joined by film critic and author Tim Robey. Tim's book Box Office Poison: Hollywood's Story in a Century of Flops is available now in all good bookshops. Tim has chosen Supernova (90 mins) from 2000. With five uncredited directors, including Walter Hill and Francis Ford Coppola, the film stars James Spader, Angela Bassett, Robert Forster, Lou Diamond Phillips, and Peter Facinelli. Sam and Tim discuss what defines a box office flop, the disastrous production of Supernova, and why it is the worst film to appear on the podcast so far. Thank you for downloading. Send us a textDo you remember Streets of Fire from 1984? We don't. Not really. Especially after watching the trailer and wondering if this movie is a Musical or 90 minute music video. The cast is stacked with a young Diane Lane and maniacal looking Willem Dafoe. The hero, Michael Pare looks Hero-Like with his smoldering good looks, motorcycle riding, shotgun toting aesthetic. So this is going to be very good or very bad and we can't wait. Do You Remember Liking This Movie?

On today's PoM podcast episode I sat down with Walter Hill, author of Amazed Again: Reclaiming Christ's Joy in a Fading WorldIn Amazed Again, Walter Hill takes you on a deeply personal and Biblical journey to reclaim the joy that Jesus promised. With honesty and wisdom, Walt shares his own struggles—seasons of loss, burnout, and disappointment—while unpacking the powerful truth that joy isn't found in circumstances but in Christ Himself. To get connected to Walter Hill and learn more: https://walterhill.net/Register for our next 90 Days of Discipline: https://www.thepursuitofmanliness.com/gear/p/90-days-may-julyRegister for our 2025 Fall Men's Retreat: https://www.thepursuitofmanliness.com/gear/p/2025-mens-retreatRegister for Tribe XVI starting June 1st: https://www.thepursuitofmanliness.com/gear/p/tribe-xviThis podcast is sponsored by Dark Water Woodwork. Grease up your pompadours and get your switchblades ready. This week we're taking a look at Walter Hill's 1984 rock and roll fable, Streets of Fire. Coming in hot off the back of the 1982 smash hit buddy cop picture, 48 Hours, Hill and co-writer Larry Gross could write their own checks and dictate their own destinies and sold Hill's dream project, a retro nostalgia vehicle about tough guys, femme fatales, bad guys, and pop music but when the movie landed in the screening rooms at Universal they knew they had a problem. Streets of Fire is weird as hell and out of step with what movie-going teens of the summer of 1984 were looking for. So dire was the outcome that Streets of Fire ended up getting killed in its opening weekend against one of the weakest Star Trek movies and then the following week Ghostbusters dropped and until Beverly Hills Cop came out it was the only thing anyone wanted to talk about. In the years that followed Streets of Fire gained a cult following that appreciates what Hill was trying to do. It's an upgrade from The Warriors in many ways and the sound track, paired with powerhouse performances from Diane Lane and Willem Dafoe in early roles, delivers a wildly entertaining, deeply silly action movie with an enduring legacy. Let us tell you all about it.Join the Bring Me The Axe Discord: https://discord.gg/snkxuxzJSupport Bring Me The Axe! on Patreon: https://patreon.com/bringmetheaxepodBuy Bring Me The Axe merch here:https://www.bonfire.com/store/bring-me-the-axe-podcast/
Reflecting on the report of the White House "seating chart" showing which cabinet members have the closest offices to the President, Carmen LaBerge takes us to Jesus teaching about seeking the play of honor at a wedding feast, and about humility. Pastor Walter Hill, author of "Amazed Again," helps us see afresh Jesus lavish love and grace, we we can reclaim our joy in Him. Faith Radio podcasts are made possible by your support. Book Vs. Movie: The WarriorsSpecial Interview With Screenwriter & Author Rob RyderPlus, a Replay of our 2020 ep! The Margos revisit a special episode dedicated to the cult classic film *The Warriors*, based on Sol Yurick's book. Directed by Walter Hill and released in 1979, the movie was a hit but faced backlash due to real-life gang violence, leading studios to halt its promotion. It became a staple of 1980s television and is now considered a modern classic for its comic book sensibility in depicting urban decay. Yurick wrote the original story in 1965, inspired by his experiences with teenagers while working for New York City's welfare department after college. The category for February is films with a number in the title! Austin picks the first one! 48 Hrs. (1982) Directed by Walter Hill
8 Movies again, annnnnnnd here goes. 1. (Halls of Anger 1970) Calvin Lockhart, a young Jeff Bridges and Janet MacLachlan star in this serious look at racism and teaching. Ed Asner makes yet another appearance too. 2. (Skin Game 1971) Same director here as the first movie. Rockford Files and Iron Eagle star with Mom from Webster in yet another film having a heavy dialogue about racism. This one tries to Trojan horse it in with some comedy, does it work, let's see. Oh look, Ed Asner. 3. (Aaron loves Angela 1975) Where the heck is Ed Asner, sigh. Gordon Parks jr. directs this rad 70's film lookin at young love and race, using Romeo and Juliet as a basic template. Irene Cara is in the house. 4.(Hard Times 1975) Warriors director Walter Hill is here, making a film where James Coburn needs to not gamble so much, damn, There's Charles Bronson and boxing too. Bronson is glowing and so expressive, an amazing on screen presence, NOT. 5. (Special Day 1977) Oh my, Italian cinema can be tricky, at least the 70's Italian films that we have seen which are few, but whoa, tricky is a too nice way of saying there's disgusting treatment of women in these films. This film, though not perfect, is an exception, and with some unexpected queer content. Sophia Loren is here, as well as Marcello Mastroianni (who appears to be in every Italian film ever) oh also the dean from Animal House. Special Day is directed by Ettore Scola. Pretty epic stuff. 6.(Skateboard the movie 1978) Silly, dumb, quickly made cash grab about Skateboarding, that I really like and even own the soundtrack. If you like the subject, and fun B movies, this is a win for me, let us tell you all about it. You might have more fun listening with the commentary track on, which means you'd have to buy it, and if yer that interested, you probably already have it. Teen heart throb Leif Garret is here and is the only one who can't skate great. Here also is Kathleen Lloyd of The Car. 7. (The Outsider 1979) Heavy film here about the troubles. It sure got some great images on film in Northern Ireland. Brits out! 8. (Penitentiary 1979) This is final film of rad director Jamaa Fanaka that we get to review. Here Sweet Pea tries to survive prison. Please see also Emma Mae 1976. ok enjoy the show, thanks for listening.

Last Man Standing, Cooder's last collaboration with Walter Hill, was a remake of a Japanese classic, 1961's Yojimbo. Hill and Cooder let loose once again, creating a dark, nihilistic action film starring Bruce Willis as the man with no name. Though very unconventional and focused almost exclusively on atmosphere, Cooder's score is surprisingly diverse and varied. - In this episode we also talk about the 1995 Family Tour with David Lindley and Cooder's session work in the mid-90s.This podcast frequently uses small snippets of musical recordings in podcast episodes for educational, review, and commentary purposes. Four weeks in a row, can you believe it?! This week we are back with a Substantive Cinema pick that we've been excited for for quite some time, Walter Hill's underrated masterpiece Southern Comfort. The movie follows a squad of National Guardsmen doing exercises in the Louisiana swamps. After some painfully avoidable events, the men become hunted and are on the run for their lives against an enemy of their own making in a place that, while actually being part of their own homeland, they find entirely foreign. On the one hand, the film is a perfectly thrilling and taut entertainment. However, it's also a substantive look at White male entitlement, American exceptionalism, militarism, race relations, and more. If you enjoyed the film or our discussion we'd love for you to send us an email or voice note. And if you have any suggestions of movies, topics, or guests for future shows, please send those our way as well! Welcome to Cyberpunk Cinema – the Definitive Dive into the Dark Future of Science Fiction. I am your host, Anthony La Pira, and I will be taking you on a cinematic journey through the sprawling cityscapes, the crippling datastorms, and the cybernetic implants that encompass all things Cyberpunk. In this week's episode, I will be breaking-down the 1986 cyberpunk sci-fi action masterpiece, Aliens – written & directed by James Cameron; story by James Cameron, Walter Hill, & David Giler; starring Sigourney Weaver, Michael Biehn, Paul Reiser, Lance Henriksen, Bill Paxton, Jenette Goldstein, and Carrie Henn.Decades after surviving the Nostromo incident, Ellen Ripley is sent out to re-establish contact with a terraforming colony but finds herself battling the Alien Queen and her offspring.Aliens transformed my childhood and became a sci-fi action landmark that, in my opinion, has never been topped. This film is galvanizing, terrifying, heart-pounding, pulse-pounding, funny, legendarily quotable, and a certifiable stone-cold classic. It's the ultimate litmus test – if you don't like Aliens, than we can't be friends. Period. I have probably seen this film near 100 times and it only gets better with each viewing. I cannot fucking wait to go over this star beast! So, do me a favor – it's time to access your cranial jacks, boot up your Ono-Sendai Cyberspace 7, and slap on your damn mirror-shades. Geronimo – An American Legend, released in 1993, was Cooder's eighth score for director Walter Hill. The movie is about the last resistance of the Native Americans against the superiority of white civilization. It's very serious and pretty dark. After the jazzy Trespass, this was something completely new for Cooder. For the first time, he composed something like a classical film score, a real tapestry of sound. And while the movie opts for the narrative perspective of the white soldiers, Cooder chooses a strict musical duality between a Native American and a white Western part. This podcast frequently uses small snippets of musical recordings in podcast episodes for educational, review, and commentary purposes. Greg, Chris in Miami, Bobby, and Mike discuss the lesser-known Walter Hill film, lovingly referred to on the show as "Swamp Warriors". When a group of National Guardsmen get stuck in the swamps of Louisiana, they find themselves hunted by locals who really don't like outsiders. Featuring a cast of great charactor actors: Keith Carradine, Powers Booth, Fred Ward, Peter Coyote, and Brion James, this is a movie made for the bin.

Click here to try it out!Welcome back to Bad Dads Film Review! Today, we're taking a retrospective look at 48 Hrs. (1982), a film that, while pioneering in the buddy cop genre, certainly shows its age in terms of attitudes and content. Directed by Walter Hill and starring Nick Nolte alongside Eddie Murphy in his film debut, this action-comedy navigates the rough dynamics between a hardened cop and a wise-cracking convict.48 Hrs. pairs Jack Cates, a grizzled San Francisco detective played by Nick Nolte, with Reggie Hammond, a fast-talking convict portrayed by Eddie Murphy. Cates pulls Hammond from prison for just 48 hours to help track down a murderous duo, setting the stage for a partnership that's as contentious as it is critical. The core of the film revolves around the duo's urgent hunt through the city's underbelly, with their clashing styles leading to both comedic and tense moments. While the movie delivers action and quick quips, the racial dynamics and some character portrayals can feel jarring and uncomfortable to a modern audience. Why It's ProblematicOutdated Attitudes: The film's portrayal of race relations and its handling of certain stereotypes have not aged well, reflecting broader societal norms of the early '80s that can be offensive today.Chemistry and Conflict: While Nolte and Murphy's dynamic is memorable, it's sometimes overshadowed by the film's problematic elements. Their interactions, meant to be humorous, often delve into sensitive areas with questionable execution.Genre Impact: Despite its shortcomings, 48 Hrs. is credited with setting the template for future buddy cop films, blending action with humor and drama, and showcasing Murphy's star potential. At its essence, 48 Hrs. tries to tackle themes of redemption and partnership against a backdrop of crime and punishment. However, the execution sometimes falls short of addressing these themes with the depth or sensitivity that contemporary audiences might expect. For those interested in the evolution of film genres and the impact of cultural context on storytelling, 48 Hrs. serves as a useful, albeit flawed, case study. It's a reminder of how far cinematic narratives have come in depicting diversity and relationships.Join us as we dissect 48 Hrs., not just for its place in action-comedy history but also for its reflection of past attitudes and what lessons can be drawn today. Whether you find it a guilty pleasure or a problematic relic, there's no doubt that it opens up important conversations.
