A nice mention for the podcast recently on Crime World inspired me to go back to the subject of the Animal Gang. Seperating fact from folklore, just who made up the so-called Animal Gang of 1930s and 1940s Dublin. Was there one gang, or does the term mean something much broader? What was the relationship between the Animal Gang and the turbulent politics of the time.   For more on the Animal Gang, see John Gibney's Doc On One at https://www.rte.ie/radio/doconone/647163-documentary-podcast-animal-gangs-inner-city-dublin-folklore

Frank and Jonathan break down Marvel's surprise decision to market Thunderbolts as The New Avengers and share a spoiler‑free then spoiler‑filled review of the film. They explore its focus on mental health, standout character arcs, and smaller‑scale storytelling that still packs emotional weight. The episode also features an in‑depth interview with producer Caitlin Delaney, who explains what a service producer really does, how to launch movies on tight budgets, and why mentorship shortens every filmmaker's learning curve. The hosts wrap with the latest entertainment headlines and weekly streaming picks. Welcome back to The Filmmakers Podcast, where we delve deep into the world of cinema with the artists who bring unforgettable stories to the screen. This week, your host, Giles Alderson, is beyond excited to welcome a true master of action and suspense, the phenomenal director Gareth Evans! Gareth Evans isn't just a director; he's a cinematic force. He exploded onto the global stage with his groundbreaking martial arts epics: the bone-jarring and genre-redefining The Raid: Redemption, and its critically acclaimed, relentless sequel, The Raid 2. These films, with their breathtakingly brutal and intricately choreographed action sequences, have left an indelible mark on filmmaking worldwide, inspiring countless others. Beyond the Raid saga, Gareth also helmed the atmospheric and unsettling folk-horror Apostle for Netflix, showcasing his impressive range. Furthermore, his incredible work as a creator, writer, and director on the critically acclaimed and intensely visceral TV series Gangs of London has further solidified his reputation for crafting compelling narratives and delivering impactful action on any scale. Now, Gareth returns to the big screen with his highly anticipated action-thriller, Havoc, featuring the immense talent of Tom Hardy. Hardy, a powerhouse performer known for his captivating and intense roles in films like Mad Max: Fury Road, The Dark Knight Rises, Inception, and Peaky Blinders, takes center stage in this gripping story. Joining Hardy in the stellar cast of Havoc are the incredibly talented Forest Whitaker (Oscar winner for The Last King of Scotland), Timothy Olyphant (known for his roles in Justified and Deadwood), Justin Cornwell (Training Day TV series), and Luis Guzmán (Boogie Nights, Narcos). Join Dom Lenoir and Gareth for an in-depth conversation about the making of Havoc. They'll explore the collaborative process of working with a talent like Tom Hardy and the rest of the impressive cast, the evolution of Gareth's signature action choreography within a new narrative framework, the challenges and rewards of bringing such a high-stakes thriller to life, and his insights gained from his remarkable journey in film and television, including his groundbreaking work on Gangs of London. This is an absolute must-listen for anyone passionate about action cinema, the craft of directing, the art of performance, or the genius of Gareth Evans. A little ringworm talk floats by next, because what's a wrestling deep dive without a few nasty tales of unclean mats, questionable promoters, and every other pitfall of life on the road? As Kev always says, you don't truly know pain until you see how nasty things get when half the roster's dealing with ringworm and you're seriously debating whether to walk out before showtime. Looking for more road stories and real talk? Kevin's got you covered on how to survive travel, the subtle art of “regularity” on the road, and why you should never trust the catering in certain promotions. He also dives into behind-the-scenes madness with talent arrivals, bizarre run-ins, and all the million little things that make wrestling shows the glorious cluster they often are. If you've ever thought about bringing your own toilet paper to a gig, congratulations—you and Big Sexy think alike. Of course, it wouldn't be “Kliq This” without the guys hitting you with left-field humor and some big-guy financial chatter. Kevin muses on everything from investment advice to bracket busters, because apparently, a deep dive on Kenyon Martin and the Florida basketball program pairs perfectly with stories about near-death experiences in the ring. Think of it like the perfect storm of wrestling nostalgia, stock tips, and comedic tangents only Nash and Oliver can conjure. By the time they wrap, your head will be spinning with random trivia, locker room memories, and the undeniable, unfiltered chemistry that only happens when The Big Guy and Sean get in front of the mic. Come for the unholy joke about iguana eggs, stay for the inside scoop on how not to get impaled by a spiked brush. If you're looking for that genuine, laugh-so-hard-you-cry vibe with just a touch of backstage scandal, you've found your new favorite hour right here on “Kliq This.” Enjoy the ride…and maybe pack some baby wipes. In this episode of Munsons at the Movies, the crew dives deep into the enigmatic and intense career of Tom Hardy, bringing back fan-favorite Guest Munson Mike Rodmaker to join the ride. From James not being able to shut up about Hardy to wild tales of Tommy #1 and Frankie Pullitzer, we explore the performer's evolution both on and off screen. We break down his early struggles with alcoholism and drug addiction, how his near-career-ending Star Trek flop almost derailed everything, and how he used his self-proclaimed talent for lying to launch a powerful acting career. We weigh his legacy against Michael Fassbender from their drama school days, question his sometimes questionable accent work (yes, many of his films require subtitles), and highlight his breakout role in Inception, which introduced him to many American audiences. Of course, we gush over his unforgettable turns in Warrior, Peaky Blinders, The Dark Knight Rises, and Mad Max: Fury Road. Like the plot of Mad Max, Hardy's career is a chaotic, compelling ride—just the way we like it. How does he rank on the Munson Meter? Do the Munsons feel in charge?  Listen to find out.

But most folks would rather watch something entertaining than stare at the sun.So we've got the latest alternatives. We start with "Novocaine" starring Jack Quaid as a mild-mannered bank employee. He's has a rare conition that makes him incapable of feeling physical pain  But when the girl of his dreams is kidnapped, he turns his rare condition into an unexpected advantage in the fight to rescue her. Bill Bregoli will let you know if he liked it. Then there's "I Love You Forever" which is billed as a subversive romantic comedy gone wrong that follows a young woman into and out of an emotionally abusive relationship. Neil Rosen and Bill McCuddy both report what they thought of it. For streaming fans we have The Åre Murders" which is a Swedish mystery series on Netflix we saw. There's also "A Thousand Blows" which comes from the creator of "Peaky Blinders." It's based on a real life female gang in 1880s London. Charl Bassil is the BBC's first-ever Chief Brand Officer, tasked with developing a unified brand strategy to engage global audiences, strengthen loyalty, and drive digital growth. With a background in marketing and leadership, Charl, originally from South Africa, brings a fresh, external perspective to one of the world's most iconic institutions. The BBC, founded in 1922, has been at the heart of historic moments—from the first high-definition broadcast in 1936 to the moon landing in 1969. It has shaped global culture with programming like Match of the Day, Peaky Blinders, and MasterChef. However, the organisation faces constant scrutiny—license fee debates, leadership controversies, and the challenge of maintaining trust in an era of misinformation. Charl acknowledges the weight of his role and the need for continuous innovation. He discusses how the BBC's leadership is focused on transformation, ensuring the organisation remains relevant, resilient, and committed to its public service values. Balancing objectivity with the demand for instant news is a critical challenge, but Charl emphasises that the BBC prioritises accuracy and integrity over speed. During the interview, Charl reflects on his personal purpose aligning with the BBC's mission. Asked if he wanted to join to help protect democracy and free speech, he found the challenge irresistible. His goal is to empower the team, simplify complexity, and sustain the BBC's brand in a fragmented media landscape. With technology and audience engagement at the forefront, his vision is clear—build for the future while staying true to the BBC's legacy.

It's ‘Mickey 17' release day, and Ben is chatting to Director Bong Joon Ho in today's episode to celebrate. Starring Robert Pattinson as an expendable worker on a colonized ice planet, the new film from Korean cinema's modern master sees protagonist Mickey ‘re-printed' over and over again.  Frequently killed in his dangerous daily tasks, ‘human printing technology' allows Mickey to be simply reborn, with his memories intact. But when he makes it back to base unexpectedly alive one day, he finds he's already been reprinted—coming face to face with his latest iteration. His girlfriend may be loving it, but the law, upheld by Mark Ruffalo's villainous Marshall, is not. Ben sits down with the ‘Parasite' Oscar winner, and his legendary translator Sharon Choi, to unpack this dark comedy sci-fi satire... to name some of the genres this madcap movie might be. Nobody makes them like Director Bong. He reveals the secret real-life location of his ice-planet (complete with mountains of salt standing in for snow), the challenges of working with two Robert Pattinsons, and his obsession with his comfort-blanket iPad. Prolific writer/producer/director Steven Knight has a habit of turning historical grit into must-watch television. From the streets of 1920s Birmingham in "Peaky Blinders" to the daring real-life SAS soldiers of "Rogue Heroes," Knight's work thrives on characters who push against the limits of their status. His latest series, "A Thousand Blows," is no different. Set in post-industrial revolution London, the show follows best friends Hezekiah and Alec as they get swept into the city's brutal underground boxing scene while crossing paths with local legends, and the notorious all-female gang, The Forty Elephants. The show stars Malachi Kirby, Erin Doherty, Stephen Graham, Jason Tobin, Francis Lovehall, and more. When Knight sat down with Bingeworthy, the busy writer was quick to admit that he doesn't watch much TV. "If anything, sometimes if I do watch stuff, I think, 'Oh God, this is so good. Why can't I just make it this simple?" he joked. That might explain why "A Thousand Blows" is anything but simple. Instead of focusing on one story, the show weaves together multiple narratives—including Hezekiah's rise in the ring, The Forty Elephants' criminal empire, and a quiet, burning revenge arc with Jason Tobin's Lao.

Benjamin Zephaniah's urgent, imperative “To Michael Menson” was written when he was a poet in residence at a human rights barrister in England. His poem resonates with his repeated calls for justice for a murdered Black musician — not a justice that is gullible, impotent, or hopeless but one that is clear-eyed, collaborative, and mighty.Benjamin Zephaniah was born and raised in Birmingham, England. He is the author of several collections of poetry, including City Psalms, Propa Propaganda, and Too Black, Too Strong. In 2000, he was poet in residence for the chambers of human rights barrister Michael Mansfield, where he worked on numerous cases, including the murder of Stephen Lawrence. Zephaniah appeared on the TV show Peaky Blinders and is also known for his poetry books for children.Find the transcript for this show at onbeing.org.We're pleased to offer Benjamin Zephaniah's poem and invite you to subscribe to Pádraig's weekly Poetry Unbound Substack newsletter, read the Poetry Unbound book, or listen to past episodes of the podcast. 1985. Back To The Future would become the highest grossing film of the year, the Live Aid benefit would be hosted simultaneously in 2 different venues on 2 different continents, and the Coca-Cola Company would experience a catastrophic failure with “New Coke” by (once again) failing to put its namesake ingredient from the ORIGINAL “Original Formula” back in their legendary beverage.    We are well aware that there are multiple listicles already out there featuring the “Top 20 Metal Albums of 1985” because 40 years is quite the chronological landmark. Nevertheless, we still felt compelled to construct our own list. It's not necessarily all thrash, but it's not all “gloves of shame” either. In short, it's a pretty substantial sampler of the albums that WE feel represent everything great about metal in1985.   It's time to shake off those “cobwebs” and prepare for some “extraordinary news” as well as “a story of redemption and forgiveness” regarding a previous negative review we received. Learn about the earliest documented “fake news” regarding Elizabeth Bathory's alleged use of “skin conditioner” and get a sneak preview of the new album from “Dick Johnson & The Ball Brothers” when you JOIN US for the TOP 20 METAL ALBUMS OF 1985.   Visit www.metalnerdery.com/podcast for more on this episode Help Support Metal Nerdery https://www.patreon.com/metalnerderypodcast Leave us a Voicemail to be played on a future episode: 980-666-8182 Metal Nerdery Tees and Hoodies – metalnerdery.com/merch and kindly leave us a review and/or rating on the iTunes/Apple Podcasts - Spotify or your favorite Podcast app Listen on iTunes, Spotify, Podbean, or wherever you get your Podcasts.
