Dana and Tom with 5x Club Member, Sarah Duncan, discuss the comedy, History of the World: Part I (1981) for its 45th anniversary: written and directed by Mel Brooks, cinematography by Woody Omens, music by John Morris, editing by John C. Howard, starring Mel Brooks, Dom DeLuise, Madeline Kahn, Harvey Korman, and Cloris Leachman.Plot Summary: History of the World, Part I is a wild comedy that makes fun of famous moments in world history. Mel Brooks plays several different characters as the movie jumps from the Stone Age to the Roman Empire and the French Revolution. Through songs, jokes, and ridiculous situations, the movie pokes fun at politics, religion, and human behavior. Its fast-moving style and silly humor have made it a cult comedy favorite.Guest:Sarah Duncan - Sister of Tom, Daughter of Dana@thenomadicarchaeologist on IGPrevious Episodes: Zodiac, My Fair Lady, The Artist, Inglourious Basterds, The Great Dictator, Forrest Gump, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Knives Out, All Quiet on the Western Front (1930), The GeneralChapters:00:00 Introduction, Cast, and Background for History of the World, Part I04:01 Welcome Back, Sarah Duncan06:09 Relationship(s) with History of the World08:39 How Has History of the World's Comedy Aged?13:48 The Borscht Belt16:43 Why There is No One Else Like Mel Brooks23:44 Plot Summary for History of the World24:27 What is History of the World About?29:05 Did You Know?32:11 First Break32:54 What's Happening with Sarah Duncan?33:18 Best Performance(s)38:09 Best Scene(s)42:11 Second Break43:10 In Memoriam43:42 Best/Funniest Lines46:23 The Stanley Rubric - Legacy49:37 The Stanley Rubric - Impact/Significance52:19 The Stanley Rubric - Novelty55:34 The Stanley Rubric - Classicness58:59 The Stanley Rubric - Rewatchability01:01:54 The Stanley Rubric - Audience Score and Final Total01:03:03 Thank You to Sarah and Remaining Thoughts01:12:00 CreditsYou can also find this episode in full video on YouTube. You can now follow us on Instagram, Twitter, Bluesky, Threads, YouTube, or TikTok (@gmoatpodcast).For more on the episode, go to: https://www.ronnyduncanstudios.com/post/history-of-the-world-part-i-1981-ft-sarah-duncanFor the entire rankings list so far, go to: https://www.ronnyduncanstudios.com/post/greatest-movie-of-all-time-listKeywords:Mel Brooks, History of the World Part 1, comedy, film legacy, behind the scenes, classic movies, satire, film analysisRonny Duncan Studios

Send us Fan MailEven as the Holocaust was ongoing, some Jews dreamed of and sought revenge for Nazi attacks on them.  Ironically, the Nazis themselves believed in a particularly antisemitic myth of Jewish vengeance and many Germans after the war feared widespread retaliation by Holocaust survivors.  Indeed, there were some attempts to carry out revenge attacks on Nazis after the war.In this episode, I talked with Laura Jockusch about what revenge meant in all these contexts and more, including in the popular imagination with media like Inglourious Basterds and The Hunters.  Laura Jockusch is the Albert Abramson Associate Professor of Holocaust Studies at Brandeis University.Jockusch, Laura. Kill Bill Vol. 1 Review is finally here, and for the fourth birthday episode of Born to Watch, the boys celebrate in style with one of the most stylish revenge films ever made. Quentin Tarantino's blood-soaked martial arts epic gets the full Born to Watch treatment as Whitey, Dan, and Will "The Worky" dive headfirst into samurai swords, anime flashbacks, outrageous violence, feet discourse, and the pure chaos of Tarantino at his most indulgent. From the very beginning, the episode feels like a celebration. It's four years of Born to Watch, Will's "Grecoversary," and a return to one of Quentin Tarantino's most rewatchable movies. The crew break down why Kill Bill: Vol. 1 still hits over twenty years later, and whether it stands as Tarantino's ultimate "put it on anytime" movie. Whitey argues that this was his go-to Tarantino film for over a decade because of how effortlessly entertaining it is, while Dan arrives ready to throw counterpunches at the cult classic. The boys unpack the movie's simple but effective revenge story as Uma Thurman's Bride awakens from a coma and begins slicing her way through the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad. Along the way, the episode explores Tarantino's obsession with genre worship, kung fu cinema, spaghetti westerns, exploitation films and anime influences. Is Kill Bill all style and no substance? Or is the style itself the substance? Dan argues the film feels more like a "comic book brought to life," while Whitey believes this marks the beginning of Tarantino's fantasy era that would continue through Inglourious Basterds and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. There's also plenty of classic Born to Watch chaos scattered throughout the episode. The guys go on hilarious tangents about actor-musicians, Russell Crowe's band, Steven Seagal blues music, David Carradine's infamous death, and whether Bill has slept with every member of the Deadly Viper squad. It's the kind of completely unhinged movie conversation only this podcast can deliver. The episode also dives deep into the standout performances. Uma Thurman's iconic turn as The Bride gets huge praise, while Lucy Liu's O-Ren Ishii is highlighted as one of the movie's best characters. The crew discuss Tarantino's talent for taking actors and reinventing them on screen, with Michael Madsen, Vivica A. Fox, Sonny Chiba and Daryl Hannah all getting their flowers. There's also a passionate discussion about Battle Royale, Oldboy, and the wave of Asian cinema influences that shaped Kill Bill into the movie it became. Naturally, the conversation turns toward the movie's most unforgettable moments. The House of Blue Leaves showdown gets dissected as one of the greatest action sequences ever filmed, while the anime origin story sequence sparks debate about whether it still works today or feels like pure Tarantino excess. The boys also tackle some of the film's more uncomfortable scenes, including Buck the hospital orderly, the Achilles tendon slicing scene, and Quentin Tarantino's famously obvious foot fetish. As always, there are laughs, arguments, wildly inappropriate observations, and genuine film appreciation mixed throughout the episode. This isn't a polished film school analysis. It's three mates sitting around celebrating movies the way movie fans actually talk about them.So if you love Quentin Tarantino, martial arts mayhem, over-the-top revenge stories, or just want to hear three Aussie blokes spiral into conversations about samurai swords, pubes, Steven Seagal and Shane Warne in the middle of a movie review, this episode is absolutely for you.JOIN THE CONVERSATIONIs Kill Bill: Vol. 1 Tarantino's most rewatchable movie?Which member of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad was your favourite?Do you prefer Volume 1 or Volume 2?Is the House of Blue Leaves sequence the greatest action scene ever filmed? And seriously… are Uma Thurman's feet even that good?#KillBill #KillBillVol1 #QuentinTarantino #BornToWatch #MoviePodcast #UmaThurman #LucyLiu #MartialArtsMovies #CultMovies #FilmPodcast

Goodbye. After Kill Bill nearly broke them, Richard Lewis, Thorin, and MonteCristo close the Tarantino arc with the film that was supposed to prove he still had it. The verdict: Inglourious Basterds contains two of the finest scenes Tarantino has ever directed (the farmhouse interrogation and the basement bar), but the rest of the movie can't sustain the altitude those scenes reach. What could have been a profound meditation on the power of cinema, the banality of evil, and Jewish catharsis instead settles for machine-gunning Hitler's corpse on the floor of a burning theater.   PrizePicks — Visit https://prizepicks.onelink.me/LME0/FOURPLAY and use code FOURPLAY and get $50 in lineups when you play your first $5 lineup! We've never had occasion to use the phrase “titular basterd” on our show before but here it is, possible and even necessary in writing about Paul Rust and the film Inglourious Basterds. We're not misspelling “basterd” or “inglourious”, mind you, that was director Quentin Tarantino's artistic choice. Q was also the one who cast Paul Rust, veteran comedy performer in movies and TV, as part of the ensemble of heroes, albeit one with no lines. Paul figures Tarantino thought he looked the part and seemed like an easy guy to hang out with. We think so too! Paul tells us all about making collages, how to gather the materials, how to lay down the pictures and glue them, and how to not get too hung up on everything being perfect. Inglourious Basterds (2009), written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, revolves around two plots to assassinate Nazi leaders during the closing years of World War II. One plot centers on a secret band of Jewish-American soldiers under the command of Ltn. Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt)—the “Basterds”—who terrorize Nazis. The other involves Shosanna Dreyfus (Melanie Laurent), a young Jewish woman who narrowly escapes death at the hands of notorious “Jew hunter” Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz) and flees to Paris where she runs a cinema under a false identity. The plot lines converge at the Paris cinema where the Basterds and Shosanna are each separately plotting to kill Hitler and other Nazi leaders while they are attending the premiere of a German propaganda film. The film utilizes alternate history to explore themes surrounding the pursuit of justice against the perpetrators of mass atrocities and the complex relationship between law and vengeance.Timestamps:0:00    Introduction2:37     Reimagining the arc of justice8:00     Alternatives to the progress narrative16:51     The power of violence and revenge21:56     Counterfactuals and alternative histories27:03     The limits of legalistic responses to atrocities32:24     The role of cinema in Nazi Germany39:00     Narratives of progress44:10     Ending with a primal moment of revenge  Further reading:Hussain, Nadine, “‘Inglorious Basterds': A Satirical Criticism of WWII Cinema and the Myth of the American War Hero,” 13(2) Inquiries Journal 1 (2021)Jackson, Robert H., Opening Statement before the International Military Tribunal, Robert H. Diane Kruger is a German actress known for her verticality in roles and languages, from Hollywood blockbusters like "Troy" and "National Treasure," to Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds" and international gems like "In the Fade," for which she won Best Actress at Cannes. Currently she stars in two television series, "The Seduction," a French-language period drama for HBO MAX, in which she plays Madame de Rosemonde, and "Little Disasters," a psychological thriller for Paramount+ where she plays a complex, fiercely devoted new mother whose world collapses around her. On this episode, she gives us a peek inside her acting process and the ingredients in the "sauce" that help her do her work, like why she's not fond of rehearsal, the importance of trust and collaboration, how a detailed backstory helps her, why she wouldn't want to play the same character for dozens of episodes, and much more. Dana and Tom and 5x Club Member, Sarah Duncan, discuss the Best Picture winner of 1930, All Quiet on the Western Front: directed by Lewis Milestone, written by Maxwell Anderson, George Abbott, and Del Andrews, cinematography by Arthur Edeson, starring Louis Wolheim and Lew Ayres.Plot Summary: All Quiet on the Western Front (1930) follows Paul Bäumer, a young German soldier swept up by patriotic fervor and the persuasive speeches of their teacher who enlists with his schoolmates during World War I. Initially eager for glory, Paul soon confronts the grim realities of trench warfare—mud, hunger, fear, and the constant presence of death. The brutality of combat strips away his youthful ideals, replacing them with disillusionment and a desperate will to survive. Alienated from civilians who cannot comprehend his experiences, Paul finds his only solace in the fragile camaraderie of his fellow soldiers. The film ends with a moment of tragic irony: just as he reaches for the simple beauty of a butterfly on the battlefield, Paul is shot and killed—on a day so quiet that the official report reads, “All quiet on the Western Front.”Guest:Sarah Duncan - Sister of Tom, Daughter of Dana@thenomadicarchaeologist on IGPrevious Episodes: Zodiac, My Fair Lady, The Artist, Inglourious Basterds, The Great Dictator, Forrest Gump, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Knives OutChapters:00:00 Introduction, Cast of All Quiet on the Western Front, and Welcome Back Sarah04:38 What Other Movies Can You See In This?06:56 Background for All Quiet on the Western Front08:16 Relationship(s) to the Film15:29 Did Dana Like It?16:23 Plot Summary for All Quiet on the Western Front18:00 What is All Quiet on the Western Front About?20:11 Ranking Best War Films29:10 Did You Know?31:38 First Break33:30 What's Happening with Sarah Duncan?33:59 Listener Feedback and Housekeeping40:02 August 2025 GMOAT Hall of Fame45:58 Best Performance(s)58:04 Best Scene(s)01:09:53 Second Break01:10:32 In Memoriam01:14:08 The Stanley Rubric - Legacy01:28:54 The Stanley Rubric - Impact/Significance01:31:47 The Stanley Rubric - Novelty01:34:45 The Stanley Rubric - Classicness01:39:46 The Stanley Rubric - Rewatchability01:44:17 The Stanley Rubric - Audience Score and Final Total01:46:02 Remaining Questions01:46:26 Thank You to Sarah01:47:09 Remaining Thoughts for the Week01:50:19 CreditsYou can also find this...

He branded the Oscars. Designed the iconic Ready to Die album cover. Created film campaigns for Inglourious Basterds, West Side Story, Dune and more. In this episode, our founding editor Katy Cowan chats with creative director Kenny Gravillis, the East London-born designer who's helped shape the visual language of contemporary film. The founder of Gravillis Inc., Kenny shares how he went from designing panty shield ads to working at Def Jam by age 21, and later building a studio in LA that now works with the biggest names in Hollywood. He reflects on meeting Spielberg, working with Spike Lee, and why staying humble (and kind) has been his secret weapon. They also talk about the challenges of breaking into a closed industry, navigating the shift from music to film, and why AI won't replace the nuance of human-made art anytime soon. Oh, and the time Christoph Waltz thought he'd been cut from Inglourious Basterds because Kenny didn't give him a poster. This season is proudly sponsored by the School of Communication Arts.

Welcome to The B-Side! Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.  It's a day to celebrate! We discuss the legend Maggie Cheung! Our B-Sides include Lost Romance (a.k.a. Story of Rose), Full Moon in New York, Green Snake, and Sausalito. Our esteemed guest for this episode is Nick Newman, host of the Emulsion podcast for The Film Stage. We talk about the Hong Kong New Wave, Maggie's aborted performance in Inglourious Basterds, the true B-Sidey-Ness of Sausalito, and Maggie Cheung's brief, lovely, recent Sight and Sound interview. There's also Nick's Sight and Sound List, that GQ piece, Julia Ormond's tackling a famous Audrey Hepburn role, and Nick's great interview with filmmaker Olivier Assayas back in 2022. By 2004, at the young age of forty, Cheung retired from acting. Her legacy has only cemented further in the decades since her final films, something we discuss in this episode as well.
