This week on Born to Watch, the team takes aim at one of Quentin Tarantino's most audacious creations with their Inglourious Basterds (2009) Review. Set in Nazi-occupied France during World War II, Tarantino weaves together a brutal tale of revenge, propaganda, and pure cinematic spectacle. Brad Pitt leads the charge as Lieutenant Aldo Raine, a grizzled American soldier commanding a team of Jewish fighters with one simple mission, kill Nazis and collect their scalps. It's a deliciously violent premise, executed with Tarantino's signature flair for dialogue, tension, and shock value. Whitey, Damo, G-Man, and special guest Dan break down the movie's unforgettable moments, from the iconic opening sequence in the French countryside to the explosive showdown in Shoshanna's Parisian cinema. The crew dives deep into the brilliance of Christoph Waltz as Colonel Hans Landa, the “Jew Hunter” whose multilingual charm and chilling brutality won him an Academy Award. Whitey recounts his jaw-dropping experience attending the Inglourious Basterds premiere at the State Theatre in Sydney, where he not only watched the film in stunning 70mm but bumped into Tarantino himself, earning a nod and a “Thanks, mate” from the director. It's a full-circle fanboy moment that the crew can't help but roast him for.Damo, true to form, is sceptical of the film's pacing and violence, admitting that it took him three separate tries to get through it. He hilariously recalls turning it off twice during the Bear Jew scene — the sound of the bat making contact just too much to handle. Meanwhile, G-Man shines with trivia gold, revealing Tarantino's decade-long script process and the last-minute discovery of Christoph Waltz, who stole the role from Leonardo DiCaprio. His ability to seamlessly switch between German, French, Italian, and English during his audition left Tarantino and producer Lawrence Bender high-fiving in disbelief. The team also dissects the infamous basement bar scene — a masterclass in tension and dialogue that only Tarantino could deliver. Michael Fassbender's suave but doomed performance as Lieutenant Archie Hicox gets high praise, while Damo can't help but admire his old-timey English gentleman look. Whitey and Dan debate whether this is the best opening scene of all time, putting it up against classics like Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Dark Knight.Of course, it wouldn't be Born to Watch without a deep dive. Damo declares the movie a “masterpiece of tension,” while G-Man drops the trivia bomb that Tarantino nearly abandoned the script after failing to find the right actor for Landa. It wasn't until Waltz walked in and blew them away with his quad-lingual performance that the movie finally came together.IN THIS EPISODE:Quentin Tarantino's mastery of dialogue and pacingBrad Pitt's Southern drawl and why Aldo Raine might be his coolest roleChristoph Waltz's Oscar-winning turn as Hans LandaWhy the basement bar scene is Tarantino at his bestWhitey's surreal run-in with Tarantino after the Sydney premiereInglourious Basterds is the movie where history gets rewritten, Nazis get what's coming to them, and Tarantino crafts his most ambitious narrative yet. It's violent, sharp, and endlessly quotable. The team at Born to Watch spares no detail, no roast, and no punchline in their breakdown of this modern classic.Listen now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your movie fix.Join the conversation:Is Inglourious Basterds Tarantino's best work? Can you handle the Bear Jew scene?Where does Hans Landa rank among the all-time great villains?Drop us a voicemail at BornToWatch.com.au and be part of the show!#BornToWatch #InglouriousBasterds #QuentinTarantino #BradPitt #ChristophWaltz #MoviePodcast #CinemaRevenge #NazisGetScalped #WorldWarIIMovies #TarantinoClassic

Burning Bright and Chris Paul take on Inglourious Basterds, Quentin Tarantino's bold reimagining of World War II. But this isn't just a discussion about a great movie, it's an exploration of propaganda, revisionist history, and the war of narratives that shape our understanding of the past. The hosts break down Tarantino's use of storytelling as a weapon, the subversive messages hidden in Hollywood films, and how Inglourious Basterds itself serves as a form of narrative warfare. From Hans Landa's masterful manipulation to the satirical rewriting of history, they examine how propaganda functions in both the film and the real world. With discussions on historical myths, the power of Hollywood in shaping perceptions, and even some unexpected connections to current events, this episode is a deep dive into the stories we're told...and the truth that lies beneath.

In this episode, we dive deep into Inglourious Basterds, breaking down the masterfully tense opening scene and revealing what makes it so iconic. We explore Quentin Tarantino's storytelling, analyzing his brilliant use of character, dialogue, and tension. We also uncover hidden details and explain how Tarantino's writing adds layers of context to key scenes, making the film a timeless masterpiece. Get insights into his unique filmmaking style and what sets Inglourious Basterds apart from other war movies. INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS is about: It is the first year of Germany's occupation of France. Allied officer Lt. Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) assembles a team of Jewish soldiers to commit violent acts of retribution against the Nazis, including the taking of their scalps. Alec, Mattson and JJ dive into a detailed discussion of Quentin Tarantino's film "Inglourious Basterds," exploring its unique blend of historical fiction and dark humor. The hosts debate the film's pacing, particularly its middle section, which some feel could benefit from tighter editing. They highlight the standout performances of Christoph Waltz and Brad Pitt, emphasizing how their characters drive the narrative and create tension. The conversation also touches on the film's satirical elements, with a focus on its portrayal of Nazi propaganda and the absurdities of war. Overall, the episode offers insights into both the strengths and weaknesses of Tarantino's storytelling style, making it a thoughtful analysis for fans of cinema.Support us:https://www.patreon.com/whatsourverdictEmail us: hosts@whatsourverdict.comFollow us:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/whatsourverdictTwitter: @whatsourverdictInstagram: @whatsourverdictYouTube: https://youtube.com/channel/UC-K_E-ofs3b85BnoU4R6liAVisit us:www.whatsourverdict.com

On this week's episode, I'm joined by Bill Ryan and Dennis Cozzalio to discuss their contribution to the new Arrow Limited Edition release of Inglourious Basterds on 4K. The booklet features a blog-era (remember blogs?) conversation about the film that occurred when it was initially released, in addition to, among other things, a postcard with a recipe for apple strudel (whip cream NOT optional). It's a great set with lots of extras and I highly recommend picking it up if you can find a copy. We discussed the initial response to the film and our own feelings about it some 15 years or so later, as well as that weirdly exciting moment of online film criticism. If you enjoyed the episode, I hope you share it with a friend!

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) ft. Sarah Duncan and Brian Skutle

Dana and Tom with 5x Club member, Sarah Duncan, and new guest, Brian Skutle (Film critic, podcaster, composer, host of Sonic Cinema, projector fixer) discuss Mr. Smith Goes to Washington for its 85th anniversary: directed by Frank Capra, written by Sidney Buchman and Myles Connelly, music by Dmitri Tiomkin, starring James Stewart, Jean Arthur, Claude Rains, and Edward Arnold.Plot Summary: Mr. Smith Goes to Washington is a classic tale of idealism clashing with the gritty realities of political power. Jimmy Stewart stars as Jefferson Smith, a naive but well-intentioned small-town man thrust into the unforgiving world of Washington politics after being unexpectedly appointed to the U.S. Senate. Smith, with his earnest love for American principles, soon finds himself entangled in a web of corruption and power-play, where his sincere belief in doing the right thing is dismissed as foolish by hardened senators. What follows is a story of resilience, where Stewart's character battles not only for a cause but for his very soul. Director Frank Capra lets his protagonist shine during a famous filibuster scene, in which Stewart's quivering intensity speaks volumes about the weight of standing up to corruption. While Capra's romanticized view of democracy is apparent, he tempers it with a frankness about the ugliness of the political machine—a balance that resonates even decades later. It's a movie as much about Smith's journey as it is about a society's idealism and its power to confront, and perhaps even mend itself.Chapters:00:00 Welcome and Introduction to Our Guests01:38 Getting to Know - Brian Skutle05:56 Cast and Recognition for Mr. Smith Goes to Washington09:39 Why This Movie?12:21 Relationship(s) with Mr. Smith Goes to Washington15:04 What is Mr. Smith Goes to Washington About?19:57 Is Mr. Smith Goes to Washington Outdated?22:56 Plot Summary for Mr. Smith Goes to Washington24:30 Did You Know?26:51 First Break28:29 What's Happening with Sarah and Brian31:10 Ask Dana Anything39:23 Best Performance(s)53:16 Best/Favorite/Indelible Scene(s)01:05:32 Second Break01:06:14 In Memoriam01:08:31 Best/Funniest Lines01:11:09 The Stanley Rubric - Legacy01:19:01 The Stanley Rubric - Impact/Significance01:24:16 The Stanley Rubric - Novelty01:28:46 The Stanley Rubric - Classicness01:34:11 The Stanley Rubric - Rewatchability01:37:52 The Stanley Rubric - Audience Score and Final Total01:38:58 Remaining Questions for Mr. Smith Goes to Washington01:44:18 Thank You to Our Guests01:45:57 CreditsGuests:Sarah Duncan - Sister of Tom, Daughter of Dana@thenomadicarchaeologist on IGPrevious Episodes: Zodiac, My Fair Lady, The Artist, Inglourious Basterds, The Great Dictator, and

Once Upon a Time in Nazi-Occupied France....A beloved filmmaker (Quentin Tarantino) directed his first epic period piece just LOOSELY (very loosely) based upon true events....meaning World War II.  We follow several different characters all within France at the time including Shoshanna (Melanie Laurent) a Jewish movie theater owner, Lt. Aldo Raines (Brad Pitt), the leader of a small roving grope of Allied soldiers known as "The Basterds," Archie Hickock (Michael Fassbender) a sharp British soldier on a very dangerous spy mission, and the evil Colonel Hans Landa who is hunting for all of them.  Landa is played by Christoph Walz in a breakout performance which would win him the first of two Oscars.  (He would win his other for a supporting performance in the next Tarantino film.)  As their stories converge, we witness plenty of treachery, deceit, and a generous share of Nazi scalps along the way. :o This film came out fifteen years ago this month, was a box office smash, and was nominated for eight Oscars including Best Picture.Send us a Text Message.https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
