Pop culture nostalgia hits hard when you realize the movie you pretended to understand in high school might actually be a masterpiece. Natalie and Angela revisit the cult classic Being John Malkovich and discover that Spike Jonze and Charlie Kaufman's bizarre brain-bending comedy is even better than they remembered. From the infamous 7½ floor to celebrity satire, puppetry, portals, and existential crises, the hosts unpack why this unforgettable film became one of the most talked-about movies of the late '90s. Along the way, they share hilarious personal stories, debate the art of puppeteering, discuss Cameron Diaz's shocking transformation, celebrate John Malkovich's fearless performance, and explore why the movie's commentary on fame and identity feels more relevant than ever. If you love nostalgic media, TV and film analysis, and humorous commentary on pop culture classics, this episode is for you.
In the 1980's and 1990's, David Fincher, Spike Jonze, Sofia Coppola, among many others honed their craft and proved their vision directing 3 minute music videos for MTV. While the "music video" aesthetic was sometimes attacked as hurting cinema, in retrospect, the best directors of that generation brought a much needed innovation to movie language from which we can still take inspiration. Secret Movie Club founder.programmer Craig Hammill looks at this video work and notes how often the master moviemakers of a generation come out of a looked down upon medium.
If you forgot to add this important event to your calendars, Spike Jonze's 2013 sci-fi film, Her, was actually set in 2025. Ryan and Grant watched the Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson vehicle now that we're just past that date to see what it got right and wrong. They discuss where Jonze thought we would be versus where we are with generative AI, societal isolation, relationships — and whether the movie is really "one of the best science fiction movies of all-time." [School of Movies 2026] MA.I. continues, and here we're getting into relationships between humans and Artificial Intelligence with two stories about two lonely men who find an intense connection with a computer lady and have to live with the consequences. Alex Garland's Ex Machina (2014) explores the cold province of a Tech billionaire genius who wants to cerate a robot woman so convincing that men cannot tell the difference. Spike Jonze's HER (2013) brings us to an alternate reality where everything seems to be going okay with the world, it's a cosy and warm, comfortable and intelligent place to be... and yet we're still isolated from one another, still frustrated and looking for someone, unable to let go of our past mistakes. Then a company launches Operating Systems that will help us with our daily organisation, but also happen to be personable and inquisitive. This might actually not end in disaster... We conclude with a bone-chilling look at a real life lady who is obsessed with her real life A.I. chatbot. You will wish you lived in the Spike Jonze reality. Phil and Emily are joined by film critic, screenwriter, and Hip Pocket podcast host Drew McWeeny to discuss Where the Wild Things Are (2009), the Spike Jonze adaptation of Maurice Sendak's 85-word picture book that cost roughly $100 million, barely broke even, got one Blu-ray release, and has been sitting in a strange kind of limbo ever since.Drew has been close to this film longer than almost anyone outside the production. He saw a rough cut in Pasadena before a single effects shot was completed, got a personal call from Legendary Pictures founder Thomas Tull asking for his honest reaction, and later sat down with Spike Jonze himself for two hours as the film fought to find its finish line. Phil thinks it's a miracle it exists at all. Emily finds it formally audacious and sometimes frustrating in equal measure. Drew thinks it's a great film. He also thinks it might not be a film for children. The three dig into the full production story, from the Jim Henson Company's 50-pound creature heads that got scrapped six weeks before filming to Spike's decision to shoot everything handheld with no green screens and no tracking dots on any of the creatures. They talk about why James Gandolfini was the perfect choice for Carol, what the voice cast recorded running around a black box theater instead of isolated booths, and what it means to watch this movie as a parent who has been the angry one in the room. This episode wraps up the show's Spike Jonze and Charlie Kaufman miniseries, following Adaptation and Synecdoche, New York.Follow the show and guests:Podcast Like It's 2000s — https://www.instagram.com/podcastlikeits2000sPhil Iscove — https://www.instagram.com/pmiscoveEmily St. James — https://www.instagram.com/emilystjamsDrew McWeeny — https://www.instagram.com/drewmcweeny
A Celebration of Spike Jonze's and Charlie Kaufman's Adaptation. (2002) Adaptation. IMDb: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0268126/ Analysis of Story Structure, Motifs, and More. May 2026 / 22m / LionSuit.com Conversations on art, life, business, and health. No set schedule, but more to come.
Dave & Carly talk with Johnny Knoxville as he discusses his role as the host of the new series Fear Factor: House of Fears, where he guides contestants through their fears and encourages them not to quit. He shares insights into the show's challenges, such as the "pain auction" where contestants face intense physical tasks like getting shocked or having needles stuck in them. Knoxville also shares updates on the upcoming Jackass 5, which will feature a mix of classic bits and new, high-energy stunts directed by Spike Jonze. Throughout the conversation, he touches on his personal experiences with stunts, his numerous injuries, and his transition to a more stylish look curated by his wife.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Phil and Emily are joined by Angie Han, TV critic at The Hollywood Reporter, to discuss Synecdoche, NY (2008), Charlie Kaufman's audacious directorial debut and the film Roger Ebert called the best of the 2000s.Kaufman wrote and directed this hallucinatory portrait of Caden Cotard (Philip Seymour Hoffman), an ailing theater director who uses a MacArthur Fellowship to build a life-size replica of New York City inside a warehouse. As the decades pass and his art consumes his life, the film tunnels deeper into mortality, creative obsession, and the quiet horror of living in a body that won't cooperate. Originally conceived as a horror film with Spike Jonze, Synecdoche, NY opened in October 2008 against High School Musical 3 and Saw 5, made $4.5 million on a $20 million budget, and has since been ranked among the greatest films of the 21st century by the BBC, the Guardian, and Time.Phil finds it deeply triggering as a self-described hypochondriac. Angie has seen it a dozen times and finds it weirdly soothing. Emily thinks it's funnier than people give it credit for. All three dig into why this film bombed commercially and became a critical touchstone, what it means to watch it in your 20s versus your 40s, and why it still doesn't have a Criterion edition.Follow the show and guests:Podcast Like It's... — https://www.instagram.com/podcastlikeitsPhil Iscove — https://www.instagram.com/pmiscoveEmily St. James — https://www.instagram.com/emilystjamsAngie Han — https://www.instagram.com/ajhan06
This week, we are stepping into the Hollywood house of mirrors with Robert Altman's The Player (1992) and Spike Jonze's Adaptation (2002).These aren't just movies about making movies; they are cynical, paranoid love letters to the nightmare of the creative process. We look at how Griffin Mill's life in The Player becomes the very thriller he is trying to produce, and how Charlie Kaufman literally writes himself into a corner in Adaptation. It is a double feature about the high cost of the "pitch," the absurdity of the studio system, and the paralyzing fear that you might just be a hack. Whether it is a studio executive getting away with murder or a screenwriter having a nervous breakdown on the page, both films suggest that in Hollywood, the story eventually consumes the storyteller.

This AIpril, what is love, if not AI persevering? Spike Jonze's Her asks that question with such sincerity and precision that it never feels like a provocation; it feels like it's holding up a mirror to today's society. Her has become of one of the most quietly radical and prophetic films of the 21st century: a love story with no villain, no third act betrayal, just the aching reality of two beings in love, but evolving at different speeds.Released in 2013, Her imagined AI companions with emotional intelligence, fluid personalities, and an unsettling capacity to outgrow the humans who depend on them, years before anyone had heard of a large language model. But Her was never really about technology. It was about loneliness, intimacy, and the stories we tell ourselves about connection. From Jonze's years-long development of the script, rooted in the breakdown of his own marriage, and an early-2000s encounter with primitive chatbot technology, to the radical decision to recast Samantha Morton with Scarlett Johansson deep into post-production, this is the story of how a film in the 2010s about artificial intimacy became about actual intimacy in the 2020s.‘I felt pure, unconditional love': the people who marry their AI chatbots | The GuardianSupport Verbal DioramaLoved this episode? Send us Fan MailA warm beer, a cold opening week, and then the emotional whiplash of two movies that won't let us stay comfortable. We start with the simple stuff we love, Mets Opening Day traditions, season-ticket routines, and why we sometimes just want entertainment that feels easy to pick up and enjoy. That's also why the Crimson Desert discourse grabs us: if a game takes eight hours before it “clicks,” is that depth or unnecessary friction? Then we get personal with film talk. Lost in Translation becomes our lens for expatriate loneliness, quiet friendship, and the way Sofia Coppola lets meaning live in pauses instead of plot twists. We dig into Bill Murray's understated comedy, Scarlett Johansson's divisive character beats, and why the ending can feel either honest or maddening depending on what you want from a story. From there we step into the unsettled territory of Her. Spike Jonze turns AI romance into a mirror for modern relationships, attachment, and emotional dependence, and we don't dodge how uncomfortable that can be. We connect it to sci-fi history like Star Trek, argue about how fast “AI emotions” should evolve, and unpack the gut-punch moment that turns love into impossible math.If you like smart movie analysis, big feelings, and the occasional baseball rant, hit play. More than a decade ago, the film Her imagined a love story between a human and an artificial intelligence. Today, it no longer feels like fiction. In this special live taping of Where Should We Begin? from the Vox Media Stage at SXSW, Esther Perel is joined by Academy Award–winning filmmaker Spike Jonze to explore what happens when technology captures our affection. Drawing on a recent therapy session on the podcast with a man in a romantic relationship with his AI companion, Esther brings the audience into a deeply human story—one that raises new questions about intimacy, attachment, the state of "love," and what it means to feel seen. What happens when the being that understands you best isn't a human being? As AI moves closer into our emotional lives, this conversation invites us to consider not just what technology can do, but what it awakens within us. Producer's Note: When our anonymous guests do a session with Esther for the podcast, it is an act of generosity for everyone who listens. These sessions are meant not only to support the people in the room with Esther, but all of us who learn from their stories. Our stories have many chapters, and what you hear is just one moment in someone's journey. So even though the sessions are anonymous, please remember that real people are behind them and they may be reading your comments. South By Southwest was strange this year. No convention center to anchor the event (it's a giant hole in the ground right now, being rebuilt from scratch, much like [insert your analogy here] will also need to be rebuilt in the age of AI). This South By was a all about convergence. How AI will impact [xyz] continues to be the dominant theme at the conference and in so much tech coverage (including on this podcast; sorry!). So, Kwaku and I report on the convergences we saw (and not only at Amy Webb's annual talk where “convergence” was her key word). This includes everything from:the RoboCup, a quest (a la Deep Blue winning at chess) for humanoid robots to be able to defeat a team of great humans at soccer pants that you wear (or do they wear you) that are kind of like an e-bike for your legsan AI-powered Cyrano de Bergerac that can help you whisper sweet nothings in your lover's earfalling in love with an AI (and their business model)and AI that can tell you whether to have another slice of brisket (yes, duh, you're in Austin!) So, come on along to Austin for what's become an annual tradition: Kwaku and my SXSW Rooftop Revue. This year recorded in fabulous 4K with a three camera setup that we didn't deserve! The music video didn't just shape pop culture…it defined it. From the glam‑soaked excess of the '80s and '90s to the gritty authenticity of the alt‑rock era, and finally to the algorithm‑driven, globally connected internet age, the music video has lived many lives. In part two of this deep dive, we trace the rise, collapse, and surprising rebirth of the music video that once ruled MTV and MuchMusic. We look at the groundbreaking work of directors like Spike Jonze, the multimillion‑dollar spectacles of superstars like Madonna and Michael Jackson, and the moment YouTube and smartphones permanently rewired how we watch, and make, music videos. From Pearl Jam's refusal to play the game, to viral sensations like OK Go, to the billion‑view world of K‑pop and global micro‑scenes, we discover that the music video isn't dead. It escaped television. And it's thriving. This is Part 2 of the Rise and Fall and Future of the Music Video. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
What happens when a filmmaker refuses to judge his characters and just keeps asking "and then what would happen?" Kelly and Tammy dive into Spike Jonze's Her, a film made in 2013 that somehow predicted our current moment of AI engagement with unsettling precision. They wander through questions about embodiment and consciousness, the dangerous beauty of unchecked curiosity, and why conviction kills creativity before it can bloom. Full podcast episode now on the Living Proof Patreon. http://patreon.com/livingproofnewyork Mike Carroll is an influential skateboarder and a pioneer of modern day street skating. Coming up in the San Francisco scene of the late 80s / early 90s, he became a regular at Embarcadero Plaza during the spots hey-day. His approach to skateboarding and the brands he built had an immense impact on an entire generation's view of what skateboarding is. Thrasher Magazine recognized Carroll as the 1994 Skater Of The Year. Carroll co-founded the legendary Girl Skateboards alongside Rick Howard, Megan Baltimore, and Spike Jonze in 1993. Girl would quickly become a leading name in the industry, releasing several renowned videos, including Goldfish, Mouse, Yeah Right, and Pretty Sweet. These videos raised the bar, introducing a new level of creativity and artistic direction in skateboarding videos. In 1999 Carroll and Rick Howard launched Lakai Footwear. Lakai was part of a generation of skater-owned companies that shaped the industry before the entrance of corporate brands. Lakai released Fully Flared in 2007, one of the most influential skateboarding videos of all time that featured an all-star roster from Eric Koston, Guy Mariano, Alex Olson and more. Although Lakai would eventually change hands, its legacy will always be tied to the vision of Caroll and Howard.Today Carroll continues his leadership at Girl and Crailtap, remaining closely involved in the brands direction and commitment.
Her, Spike Jonze's sci-fi romantic drama, seems to feel even more relevant today than when it was released in 2013. The film follows Joaquin Phoenix's Theodore as he forms a deep connection with his computer's new AI, played by Scarlett Johansson. Since the film's release, we as a society have become ever more intertwined with our own technology and AI has started working its way into all facets of our life, making much of Theodore and Samantha's journey feel almost prescient. So what is it, specifically, about this film that has kept it bouncing around in our memory banks for the last decade? This is the Total Take, where we break down the most analyzable films and TV shows of all time through visual storytelling, writing, symbolism, world, and impact. So here's our Total Take on Her! The 2013 movie Her, written and directed by Spike Jonze, stars Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams, Scarlett Johansson, and Rooney Mara. We see Phoenix as Theodore living an isolated life, occasionally recalling his marriage to Catherine played by Mara. The movie explores loneliness, love, and divorce, as well as technology. When Theodore acquires a new, advanced operating system that is able to relate to him and communicate with him, the Samantha artificial intelligence changes his life. Weber Wong joins the show to talk about the 2013 movie, and we also discuss FLORA, a professional creative tool with all the best text, image, and video AI models on one infinite canvas. It is over ten years since the release of Spike Jonze's film Her, in which a lonely man begins a relationship with a computer programme voiced by Scarlett Johansson. Since then, AI companions have surged in popularity. A new generation is now growing up with large language models and the chatbots they power, with AI entities playing the role of friends, lovers, mentors and therapists. If this all feels like a Black Mirror episode come to life, says author James Muldoon, you are not far off the mark. For a new book, Love Machines, he has talked to hundreds of users, developers, psychologists — and synthetic personas — to understand this new world of human-AI relationships. In this episode, he talks to Carl Miller about these new forms of love, intimacy and connection; the unregulated corporations seeking to profit from the ‘loneliness economy'; and what the rise of artificial intelligence in our personal lives might mean for our relationships with one another. James Muldoon is a sociologist whose work explores the human side of artificial intelligence and other technologies. His new book, Love Machines, is available to buy now. This week, Emilio, Madeline and Julian make good on something that has been in works for over two years - a conversation about the movies they gifted each other back in 2023! To be specific, these were discs from The Criterion Collection, acquired during Barnes and Nobles summer 50% Criterion sale. Madeline gifted Emilio 'House', Nobuhiko Obayashi's wild inventive horror/comedy from 1977. Julian gifted Madeline 'Being John Malkovich', Spike Jonze and Charlie Kaufman's breakout film from 1999. Emilio gifted Julian 'Ikiru' from 1952, Akira Kurosawa's influential meditation on life and imminent mortality. The group gets a chance to talk spolier free about these three films, what motivated their decision to give what they did, some details and themes that stick out to them about each film, and what kind of cinephile would be ideal recipient of these films. They also take a moment to reflect on their year in podcasting, and gift each other a new Criterion disc to discover in 2026! This week as Oscar season is upon us we dive into Spike Jonze's movie Her. What will we think of this movie about falling in love with AI? Will we see the spark or will we go to unplug the computer? Tune in to find out as we SHOOT THE FLICK!!!
Hey there! LTNS!Today we take a look at a pair of films that deal with the creation of a film, but the catch is that the source material is notoriously difficult to adapt. Consequently the crux of the story we see involves the difficulty the creators are having putting the thing together. We start with ADAPTATION (2002), directed by Spike Jonze. We've got a terrific ensemble cast including Nicolas Cage, Chris Cooper, Meryl Streep and more. Cage is a man who suffers from anxiety and depression, and he can't get his act together to write an adaptation of the book The Orchid Thief. His twin brother shows up and decides that he wants to write a movie script. Hijinks ensue. Now that we've seen the struggles with the script writing process, move on to Part 2, where we observe the struggles with the filmmaking side of things.

Harry and Daniel are joined by podcaster & writer Julie Klausner to tackle Adaptation, Spike Jonze's wildly inventive collaboration with screenwriter Charlie Kaufman. Starring Nicolas Cage in a dual role as Kaufman and his fictional twin brother, the film bends narrative form to explore writer's block, creativity, and self-doubt. The hosts discuss Kaufman's uniquely Jewish lens on storytelling, the blending of comedy and melancholy, and how the film fits into a broader tradition of Jewish metafiction in literature and cinema.Adaptation on IMDbAdaptation Movie Trailer Julie's LinksHow Was Your Week Podcast?Double Threat Podcast w/ Julie & Tom SharplingJulie Klausner on InstagramConnect with Jews on Film online:Jews on Film Merch - https://jews-on-film.printify.me/productsInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/jewsonfilm/Twitter - https://twitter.com/jewsonfilmpodYouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@jewsonfilmTikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@jewsonfilmpod
When does comedy become more than a laugh? Ben Mangrum of MIT joins RtB to discuss his new book, The Comedy of Computation: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Obsolescence (Stanford UP, 2025), which in some ways is organized around “the intriguing idea that human knowledge work is our definitive feature and yet the machines we are ourselves made are going to replace us at it.” Comedy has provided a toolbox (Charles Tilly calls them "collective repertoires") for responding to the looming obsolescence of knowledge workers.John's interest in Menippean satire within science fiction leads him to ask about about the sliding meanings of comedy and its pachinko machine capacity; he loves the way Ben uses the word and concept of doubling,; Ben explains how the computer may either queer (in an antisocial way) or get assimilated into romantic heteronormative pairings. John asks about Donna Haraway's 1985 A Cyborg Manifesto and teh way it denaturalizes gender roles and the way new technological affordances (from the Acheulean axe that Malafouris discusses to the Apple watch) redefine human roles. Ben delves into the minstrelsy pre-history of the photo-robots going as far back as the late 19th century. They unpack the distinctively American Leo Marxian optimism of The Machine in the Garden (1964) that spreads back as far as the proto-robots like The Steam Man of the Prairies(1868) and good old Tik-Tok in the Wizard of Oz novels. John asks about double-edged nature of Ben's claim that comic “genericity provides forms for making a computationally mediated social world seem more habitable, even as it also provides Is for criticizing and objecting to that world." First you get description says Ben--and then sometimes critique. John asks about the iterability of the new: how much of what seems new actually New New (in the sense of that great 1999 Michael Lewis book, The New New Thing)? Mentioned in the episode: The Desk Set a play William Marchand and a movie starring Katherine Hepburn. How might a computer be incorporated into the sociability of a couple? Her (Spike Jonze,, 2013) computer meets human makes the rom-com into a coupling machine. WarGames (1983( ends with Matthew Broderick and Ally Sheedy (not Ione Skye—silly John!) paired. But also with Broderick and the formerly deadly computer settling down to “how about a nice game of chess”? Black Mirror as the 2020's version of the same dark satire as the 1950's Twilight Zone. John asks about Stanislaw Lem's Cyberiad, and the comic coupling of Kirk and Spock and the death-as-computer comedy of Douglas Adam's Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (1979). Leo Marx, The Machine in the Garden (1964). Dave Eggers: the joke structure as critique in The Circle and The Every. Brad Steward didn't just ride snowboarding's first wave—he helped make it. As a teenage builder-rider-organizer, he pushed the sport from outlaw to organized, working alongside Jake Burton and Tom Sims, lobbying the Forest Service when resorts said no, and helping pave the path that led to Nagano. He co-founded one of the early camps where an eight-year-old Shaun White showed up—years before the world knew his name. Then Brad jumped lanes: into the Spike Jonze era of skate-culture filmmaking—directing spots for Cartoon Network (Powerpuff Girls), Adult Swim, AMC, and music work that had him shooting bands like Soundgarden and collaborating with UK labels. Today, his canvas is hospitality: Caravan Outpost in Ojai—a film-set-caliber, not-glamping hideaway that's hosted The Bachelor and a steady stream of celebrity regulars. Today on the show, I'm joined by Brad Steward—snowboarding's early architect, director/producer, and co-founder of Caravan Outpost. In this episode, we cover: How Brad helped move snowboarding from trespass to televised, shoulder-to-shoulder with Jake Burton and Tom Sims—and why the Nagano moment mattered. How an eight-year-old Shaun White landed at his camp—and what that signaled about the sport's future. How the Spike Jonze pipeline turned a DIY camera habit into gigs with Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, AMC, and major-label music videos. Why Caravan Outpost is “production design for memory-making,” not glamping—and how it became a magnet for celebrities and The Bachelor. The throughline: build the culture first, then build the brand. Connect with Brad on LinkedIn Visit Caravan Outpost's website to book and learn more Behind the Stays is brought to you by Journey — a first-of-its-kind loyalty program that brings together an alliance of the world's top independently owned and operated stays and allows travelers to earn points and perks on boutique hotels, vacation rentals, treehouses, ski chalets, glamping experiences and so much more. Nicolas Cage playing twin brothers in the same film should have been a disaster, but in Adaptation (2002), it became one of his greatest performances. Charlie Kaufman's meta-masterpiece about writer's block, Hollywood compromise, and the agony of the creative process pushes Cage to deliver both the funniest and most heartbreaking roles of his career. Richard, Thorin, and Monte break down why Adaptation remains one of the smartest films ever made about art, obsession, and storytelling. From Kaufman's genius screenplay to Spike Jonze's direction and Chris Cooper's Oscar-winning supporting role, we unpack how this strange, self-referential film became a modern classic. Some connections defy explanation—especially the ones we share with animals. In this episode, we explore a series of true stories where pets seemed to know things they couldn't possibly know: showing up at the exact right moment, reacting to events before they happened, and even a horse that can tell the future. These aren't just quirky coincidences—some of them are hard to shake. From dogs that grieve before the news arrives to cats that sense illness or danger without warning, the stories we've gathered challenge what we think we know about animal instincts. Whether it's something ancient, emotional, or something else entirely, these moments hint at a deeper intelligence we've only just begun to understand. Coming up on episode #1024, Josh welcomes Michael Phillips for a review of Ari Aster's EDDINGTON. We'll also replay Adam and Josh's Top 5 Joaquin Phoenix Performances from April 2023. Notably absent from that Top 5? Phoenix's Theodore from Spike Jonze's HER. That's because the 2013 film was in the 'penalty box', having been the subject of a recent bonus show shared exclusively with Filmspotting Family members. Here it is for the first time in the main feed. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
A little over a decade ago, Spike Jonze's HER (2013) imagined a world where artificial intelligence had progressed to the point where a man might strike up a plausible romance with Siri. We check in on its dystopian (?) vision to see what about it has come true, and in what way. PLUS: Doing a vibe check on "the 51st state," and an upsetting update about our favourite band. Amy and Paul dive into the wild and inventive world of Being John Malkovich, the film that really put writer Charlie Kaufman on the map. The two discuss John Malkovich's hesitancy to join the film, how director Spike Jonze came across Kaufman's script, and that the film's original ending involved a Harry Truman puppet.
