Join in as we discuss the 7 1/2th floor, the script's sparse character descriptions, the movie's exploration of gender and sexuality, and our own experiences with Malkovich. Amy and Paul dive into the wild and inventive world of Being John Malkovich, the film that really put writer Charlie Kaufman on the map. The two discuss John Malkovich's hesitancy to join the film, how director Spike Jonze came across Kaufman's script, and that the film's original ending involved a Harry Truman puppet.
See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Artificially Intelligent girlfriends. Sarah Watt, Jeremy Downing and William Chen discuss Companion (2025) and Her (2013). Both films have director-writers in Drew Hancock and Spike Jonze, respectively. We start by discussing the vision of the future Her presents and how much has come to pass - 'prescient' is the word we all describe the film as. We celebrate a number of elements of Her that we enjoy. The conversation then moves to a discussion of Companion and how we found the film not as complex as Her. We discuss the films in connection to Lost In Translation (2003), Barbarian (2022), Ex Machina (2014), M3GAN (2022), Hereditary (2018), Midsommar (2019), Beau Is Afraid (2023), Heretic (2024), The White Lotus (2021-) and Yellowjackets (2021-). We praise the performances of Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams, Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid. We end with a discussion about real-world AI today and how the films connect to matters at hand.
Filip Kozera sees parallels between Excel's democratization of data analytics and Wordware's mission to put AI development in the hands of knowledge workers. Drawing inspiration from Excel's 750 million users (compared to 30 million software developers), Wordware is creating tools that balance the rigid structure of programming with the fuzziness of natural language. Filip explains why effective AI development requires working across multiple abstraction layers—from high-level concepts to detailed implementation—while preserving human creative control. He shares his vision for “word artisans” who will use AI to amplify their creative impact. Hosted by Sonya Huang, Sequoia Capital Mentioned in this episode: Lovable: Generative AI app that builds UIs and web apps Her: 2013 Spike Jonze film that Filip uses as an example of how voice will not be the best modality to express knowledge work. Descript: AI video editing app that Filip uses a lot. Granola: AI notetaking app Filip uses every day.. Gemini 2.0 Pro: Google's newest long context model that can handle 6000 page pdfs. Limitless pendant: Wearable device for collecting personal conversational context to drive AI experiences that Filip can't wait for to ship. DeepLearning.AI: Andrew Ng's amazing resource for learning about AI 3Blue1Brown: Grant Sanderson's incredible channel on YouTube that explains math and AI visually.

In the second installment of our Blade Runner Ties series, Patrick, Peter, and Jaime dive into Spike Jonze's Her (2013). Set in a near-future world, the film tells the story of Theodore, a man who falls in love with his operating system—voiced beautifully by Scarlett Johansson. While there are undeniable connections to Blade Runner 2049 in the characters of JOI and Samantha, there are also some striking differences that set them apart. We explore these parallels and much more in this exciting new episode. // For more on this and our other projects, please visit www.bladerunnerpodcast.com // If you'd like to join the conversation, find us on our closed Facebook group: Fields of Calantha. // To support the show, please consider visiting www.bladerunnerpodcast.com/support. In our latest episode, we dive deep into the fascinating world of documentary filmmaking with John Dorsey, the acclaimed director behind ESPN's 30 for 30 classics “The Marinovich Project” and “Pony Excess.” From his early days at Propaganda Films alongside legendary directors like David Fincher and Spike Jonze to his work on Johnny Cash's iconic “Hurt” music video, John shares incredible stories from his remarkable career. We explore the delicate art of documentary storytelling, discussing how he convinced the reclusive Todd Marinovich to participate in his film and navigated challenging interviews with Marv Marinovich. In this episode, Masie & Stuart take a look at an alternate vision of 2025 in Spike Jonze's 2013 sci-fi romance film Her. The second part of their examination of the divorce films of Spike Jonze and Sofia Coppola, our hosts scroll through to find a film made up of beautiful surfaces with a cynical view of romance beneath the surface. Listen as they discuss the film's beautiful production design and general aesthetics, while also getting frustrated when talking about its portrayal of women and (not-so-subtle) self-insert qualities. For our Valentine's Day 2025 episode, we plunge deep into the nature of relationships by discussing two films whose romantic pairings are arguably not relationships at all: Spike Jonze's Her (2013) and his sometime collaborator, Charlie Kaufman's I'm Thinking of Ending Things (2020). Isolation, loss, misogyny, male fantasies, hope and despair: we've got all of the Valentine's goodness for you. And it continues with our Fear and Moviegoing discussion of Mike Leigh's Hard Truths (2024). Time Codes: 0h 00m 25s: HER (2013) [dir. In this episode, Masie & Stuart take a (imaginary) trip to Japan to examine the 2003 Oscar-darling film, Sofia Coppola's Lost in Translation. The first part of a duology covering the divorce films of Sofia Coppola and Spike Jonze, our hosts find themselves treading in familiar Coppola-territory. How does this story of two priveleged people experiencing isolation and existential crises in Tokyo hold up today? Does Coppola portray the city and Japanese culture with care and sensitivity? The answers likely won't shock you based on her track record, but our hosts still find plenty to discuss and enjoy in the film's moody atmosphere and aesthetics. How do we determine what the biggest song is in an artist’s catalogue? A few decades ago it was generally decided based on sales and airplay, but then along came digital downloads, followed by YouTube views and finally, streams across the various platforms out there. A band like Weezer is a good example of this, considering they have had multiple hits throughout multiple decades. But chances are different fans have different ideas of what song is considered their biggest. Is it “Buddy Holly,” their 1994 breakout with the mind-blowing, award-winning music video directed by Spike Jonze? Or maybe it’s “Beverly Hills,” the gimmicky earworm that has divided Weezer fans for two decades now? How about their more recent cover of Toto’s “Africa” that became a surprise chart-topper? Or perhaps it is “Island in the Sun,” the laidback jangle pop song that has become a beloved anthem and streaming sensation over time. This week, join Myles Galloway as he tells you how Island in the Sun became the most successful tune Weezer has ever written. With newly unearthed interviews with Weezer themselves!

Jackas.

On this week's show, it's an all-movie week! Isaac Butler — author of The Method: How the Twentieth Century Learned to Act and host of the new Criterion Channel series, The Craft of Acting — sits in for Stephen Metcalf. First, the panel explores The Brutalist, director Brady Corbet's two-part epic following the life of László Tóth (Adrien Brody), a Hungarian-born Jewish architect who survives the Holocaust then emigrates to the United States. Then, the three unpack Carry-On, an action thriller set in Los Angeles International Airport. It's a well-made film with a dumb concept, and smashed Netflix records over the holiday. Finally, it's that time of year again: Dana leads the panel through Slate's Movie Club 2024, a cherished tradition in which she chats with other critics over email about the year in cinema. (Read her first post, here.) In the exclusive Slate Plus segment, the all-movie theme continues, as the three spoil The Brutalist. Email us at culturefest@slate.com. Endorsements: Dana: Adaptation, directed by Spike Jonze and written by Charlie Kaufman. Julia: A two-part endorsement: (1) My Cousin Vinny and (2) the production design of Three Men and a Baby (that apartment!) Isaac: “Eat What You Kill,” a masterfully reported piece by J. David McSwane for ProPublica. Podcast production by Vic Whitley-Berry. Production assistance by Kat Hong. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Welcome back to the Woody Allen Retrospective Podcast for another episode of Woody Allen Adjacent - the last one of 2024, in fact! First of all, thank you for rocking with us for another year. We GREATLY appreciate our lovely listeners, loyal subscribers, and thoughtful supporters! For those who don't know, in Woody Allen Adjacent our podcast hosts work they way thought films they like to compare and contrast to Woody Allens filmography and or writing style. Recently, Donald has charged the AI Assistant of the show to dig even deeper and generate an additional wider list of interesting Adjacent movies some maybe we may find 'out of the norm' so to speak. As we rotate our turns for adjacent every month we're slowly working our way through a very interesting list of films. We've already done more than a bunch at this point in time, some obvious, some not so. Fittingly, for the Ai's turn this month, it has chosen Spike Jonze's film - Her (2013) - a well celebrated, Oscar winning, romantic drama, where Artificial Intelligence is at the core of the love story. In this timely episode James and Donald dive into Her, exploring its poignant themes of love, loneliness, and technology in a near futuristic world that actually feels more relevant than ever. We have standout performances by Joaquin Phoenix, Scarlett Johansson and taking a look back now, we find a surprisingly well star studded supporting cast Incidentally, the main leads here, do have ties to Woody Allen (Match Point, Irrational Man) and as a extra tid-bit of trivia, some people may not know, the original Ai voice that was replaced - Samantha Morton - is another Woody Allen alumni (Sweet and Lowdown) With Joaquin Phoenix already in the spotlight earlier this year due to the Joker 2 box office disaster, we took 5 or so minutes to talk about that situation :P Reality can be just as intriguing as fiction as this movie is drawing parallels to the ever-growing influence of advanced AI platforms like Character AI, in fact we even highlight a riveting mini YouTube documentary that showcases just how close we've come to living out the reality of Her: The Rise and Fall of Character Ai So lets wrap up this year with this thoughtful discussion blending cinema, technology, and humanity, as we consider whether Her is still science fiction - or if we're already living it. Wishing you a very merry Christmas and happy new year 2025! - Links Mentioned in this Episode - The Rise and Fall of Character Ai https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ynqAB9K4icg The Real Reason Samantha Morton Was Replaced In ‘HER' (2013) https://www.thelist.com/428711/the-real-reason-samantha-mortons-voice-was-replaced-in-her/ My Complicated Feelings For ‘HER' (2013) by Passion of the Nerd https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EMJcbigcDJU Please check out the links below for the full cast, user reviews, ratings and info you may find interesting Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Her_(film) IMDb: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1798709/ Rotten Tomatoes: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/her _________________________________________ A VERY Special Thanks to The Woody Allen Pages Website & The Woody Allen Subreddit for the continued support and info – check them out for the latest from the Woody Allen Fan Community!! https://www.woodyallenpages.com & https://www.reddit.com/r/woodyallen PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT TO THIS OR ANY OTHER EPISODE USING OUR COMMENT SECTION VIDEO LINK HERE >>>>>>> https://bit.ly/warpcom IF YOU LIKE THE SHOW, PLEASE CONSIDER BUYING US A COFFEE / GIVING US A TIP VIA OUR PATREON CAMPAIGN >>> https://www.patreon.com/woodyretro Thanks for listening as always - we would also LOVE a review on iTunes or a 5 star rating via Spotify or whichever podcast platform you are listening on - please find all our connected links below. >>> https://linktr.ee/woodyretro

Book Vs. This weekend, there's a new documentary coming to theaters about the life of Christopher Reeve, the actor who played Superman. It's called Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, and it's about his career, the injury that changed his life, and about what Superman the character means to different people. For this week's episode, we're diving into the Sewers archives to revisit a 2018 conversation on that topic. My guest was Glenn Kiser, whose name you might not recognize but he's had a hand in countless films over the last thirty years — helping to craft movies alongside directors like David Fincher, Spike Jonze, Jane Campion, and George Lucas. As a kid, Glenn would obsess over movies and dream of the day he could make his own — never dreaming that his journey could take him from living on an isolated ranch in Texas to working at Skywalker Ranch. We'll have that conversation in just a moment. First, if you're enjoying The Sewers of Paris, I hope you'll consider supporting the show on Patreon. Patrons get access to an exclusive Discord server, stickers and books in the mail, bonus videos, and more. You can join the Patreon at patreon.com/mattbaume.And you may also enjoy my other projects — my YouTube videos, weekly livestreams on Twitch, my book Hi Honey, I'm Homo!, and my email newsletter. Check out all that at MattBaume.com.Also, I hope you'll check out a new documentary series premiering on CNN on September 22, about TV milestones that shaped American culture. It's called TV on the Edge, and I'm just one of the folks interviewed on the show.
