JOIN US ON PATREON: patreon.com/ivebeenmeaningtowatch. Listen in as we welcome the brilliant Nicole Eva, also known as Evasive, for a lively discussion about the manic pixie dream girl trope in film and TV. With her keen eye for movie analysis, we examine this problematic trope, its harmful effects, and its prevalence in the media. Amidst our discourse, we touch on recent controversies in the entertainment industry, such as a questionable joke on SNL, the show's toxic work environment, and the relentless pressure to produce a new show every week. Our conversation doesn't stop there. Together, we tackle the issues of shows and movies being abruptly removed from streaming platforms, causing disappointment and frustration among viewers. We also delve into the decline in quality of fashion and costuming in some shows, highlighting the need for historical accuracy. Through this, we express our collective disappointment with the lack of transparency in the industry and its impact on us as viewers. We end our discussion by examining the portrayal of manic pixie dream girls in films such as 500 Days of Summer and Ruby Sparks. We unpack the complexities of this trope, from its origins with male writers to its subversion by female writer Zoe Kazan in Ruby Sparks. By offering alternative endings and analyzing the trope's impact on relationships and gender roles, we aim to bring a fresh perspective to this well-worn trope. So, tune in for an enlightening conversation about film, TV, and the roles we see on our screens. (0:00:05) - SNL and Warner Bros. Realize I no longer want to try to control this world - Online Movie Workshop with David Hoffmeister.I think some of you realize deep down that you can't control the world, but you are still trying daily. You try with people around you or your cat or dog, and you try with the environment. You try to have an opinion, and of course, it doesn't matter what that attempt is. It doesn't go very well. We are never delighted when we're trying to control the world, even when we try to control the body. Maybe you try to control the weight of your body or the shape of your body, or the look and appearance of your body: parents and children, partners and lovers, other community members. Whenever we think we can control anybody, we are lined up with the ego and won't be happy because we weren't meant to be controllers. We are terrible controllers. We can see it's been a mess, if we are honest. We're never really in control of the situation. And when we finally realize that, we forgive it and feel so happy instantly. All work and no play makes Calvin a dull boy in this week's spotlight film, 2012's RUBY SPARKS. From the directors of Little Miss Sunshine Johnathon Dayton and Valerie Faris, it centers on author Calvin Weir-Fields (played by cinema's favourite weirdo Paul Dano), who after a prolonged episode of writer's block, writes a scene about a woman named Ruby Sparks, (played by the film's writer, Zoe Kazan), his ideal partner. After writing about Ruby and feeling she's almost real, Calvin dreams about her and when he wakes up, she's in his house. As much a psychological horror story as it it a romance, this movie puts the manic into manic pixie dream girl.
