Lemar's birthday month celebration continues on We Drink & We Watch Things, and for his second pick of August, we are turning up the volume and diving headfirst into Edgar Wright's hyper-kinetic 2010 comic book masterpiece: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Lemar requested this one specifically for its unmatched visual energy, rapid-fire humor, and absolute classic of a soundtrack. To match the high-score, 8-bit arcade chaos on screen, we are mixing up Lemar's custom cocktail called "Sex Bobomb" - a sweet and sour whiskey drink, served with a candied orange peel and cherry garnish - packing enough of a kick to knock out seven evil exes in a row. This week, we breakdown Edgar Wright's unique direction and how he seamlessly translates video game logic, comic book panel transitions, and arcade visual effects onto the big screen. Lemar celebrates Michael Cera's awkward, bass-playing protagonist, Mary Elizabeth Winstead's iconic Ramona Flowers, and Mackenzie leans into the endless parade of scene-stealing supporting roles - from Chris Evans' hilarious turn as movie star Lucas Lee to Kieran Culkin's perfection as Wallace Wells and Brie Larson's legendary vocals as Envy Adams. We also debate the sheer musical genius of Sex Bob-Omb, break down our favorite fight sequences, and discuss why this film is Lemar's ultimate holy grail of comic book adaptations. If you know all the words to "Threshold," or if you just want to hear Lemar geek out over one of the most visually inventive movies ever made, turn your amp up to eleven for this one. We are blending our deep appreciation for Edgar Wright's craft with our usual casual banter, keeping the birthday hype rolling strong for Lemar's special month. This episode VIDEO is live on YouTube AND Spotify!Follow us on Instagram to get ep sneak peaks and find out what's coming up. Welcome to Your Movie Rocks, an Alternate Ending podcast hosted by Mandy Albert. For every episode, Mandy will watch a movie assigned by her guest host, followed by a lively discussion. There's only one rule: no matter what the movie does to her, Mandy is only allowed to love it. August marks the 16th anniversary of the release of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, which isn't actually the reason that Gavin - appearing for the third time on Your Movie Rocks! - selected it. Rather, it's because he wanted to give Mandy a movie she was undoubtedly going to love for the third time in a row, following Agora and Lawrence of Arabia. Something like that, anyway. Together, Mandy and Gavin discuss the turbulent career of director Edgar Wright, the evolving careers of the jam-packed cast of the film, and the narrative logic of video games, as well as finding out if Mandy shares Gavin's enthusiasm for this generational nerd touchstone.

What are we reviewing this week? Oh, only one of the best comedy films ever made! Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is a movie about a pretty not great guy starring Michael Cera. He's infatuated with Ramona Flowers, a manic pixie dream girl played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead. To date her, he has to defeat all of her exes in a bunch of extravagant action sequences. Written and directed by Edgar Wright, this movie is filled with nerdy references, great music, and an incredible cast of huge names.Join our Patreon for our bonus episodes! https://www.patreon.com/oldiebutagoodiepodFollow the show!Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/oldiebutagoodiepod/Facebook: https://fb.me/oldiebutagoodiepodPodcast Platforms: https://linktr.ee/oldiebutagoodiepodGot feedback? Scott Pilgrim EX is a spiritual sequel to a Netflix animated series from 2024, a Scott Pilgrim movie tie-in game from 15 years ago, and an underrated beat ‘em up series that debuted on the NES. Or to put it another way: Scott Pilgrim EX is deeply nostalgic, not for one moment, but for the breadth of the millennial gamer experience. Is that… fun? It will depend on your love of Scott Pilgrim, Rivert City Ransom, and the ongoing renaissance of a long-dormant genre. Get the full list of games (and other stuff) discussed at www.besties.fan. Based upon the 1982 Stephen King sci-fi novel of the same name, this dystopian action thriller takes place in a not-too-distant-future where just a few select corporations run everything and one of them controls most of the entertainment, including THE most popular show on TV, "The Running Man." Our beleaguered hero Ben Richards (Glenn Powell) enlists for this high-stakes reality show which involves him...you guessed it....on the run from various "hunters" who are seeking out him with plans to kill him, anywhere in the country. Directed by acclaimed genre filmmaker Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Baby Driver, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World), this is NOT a remake of the 1987 cult classic of the same name starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. (Though that film was a loose adaptation of the same novel) And it features LOTS and LOTS of running, go figure! :) Also among the stacked cast are Josh Brolin, Jayme Lawson, Colman Domingo, Michael Cera, and Lee Pace. Guest Blake Trevino returns to Beer and a Movie for a two-lager, two-Edgar Wright film kind of episode. First up is The Running Man (2025), a fresh new take that still carries some of Wright's kinetic fingerprints—though two of us liked it and one of us walked away a little underwhelmed. Then the trio dives into Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, the purest expression of Wright's comic-book pop energy, where smash-cuts become punchlines and the emotional core shines through all the visual fireworks. To keep the conversation crisp, we crack open a Sierra Nevada Premium Pils and Tupps Beer Ease Side Lager, two clean, classic lagers that pair perfectly with Wright's ability to make even the most chaotic scenes feel smooth, deliberate, and unmistakably his.
RIGHT OUT OF THEATER For The Running Man Review! Greg Alba & Coy Jandreau step out of the theater to talk about Edgar Wright's bold new adaptation of Stephen King's novel The Running Man—a film that fuses the bleak dystopian tone of the book with the pop-energy of the Arnold Schwarzenegger 1987 cult classic. The Running Man (1987) Reaction: • THE RUNNING MAN (1987) MOVIE REACTION!! Fi... Baby Driver Reaction: • BABY DRIVER (2017) IS A GROOVY BADASS RIDE... Scott Pilgrim Vs the World Reaction: • SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD (2010) MOVIE R... Shaun Of The Dead Reaction: • SHAUN OF THE DEAD (2004) IS NEAR PERFECT!!... We dive into everything from pacing, tone, satire, and worldbuilding to the film's commentary on surveillance, AI manipulation, class divides, and the nature of modern reality-entertainment. We discuss the full cast: Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick, Anyone But You, Hit Man), Ben Affleck (The Town, Argo, Gone Girl), Josh Brolin (Avengers: Infinity War, No Country for Old Men, Dune), Colman Domingo (Euphoria, Rustin, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom), Michael Cera (Superbad, Barbie, Scott Pilgrim), and Victoria Cartagena (The Batman, Gotham, You). Greg & Coy talk about Powell's grounded take on rage and survival, Domingo's flamboyant menace, Cera playing totally against type, and how Wright balances satire with darker, bleaker sequences pulled straight from King's vision. We explore the film's biggest swings, its “spoonful of sugar vs. heavy commentary” tonal struggle, how the action compares to Edgar Wright's signature kinetic style, the dystopian world's similarity to our own, and whether the movie delivers the emotional punch it's reaching for. We compare its approach to the 1987 film, discuss what it keeps, what it updates, and why the film sometimes feels torn between King's novel and ‘80s homage. Whether you're searching for Running Man 2025 explained, Edgar Wright new movie review, Stephen King adaptation reactions, or Glen Powell Running Man breakdown, this review covers pacing, characters, themes, action, and everything fresh out of the theater. Dave and Cody revisit Scott Pilgrim vs. The World—a box office flop turned cult classic that might just be one of the more innovative and deeply layered comedies of the 21st century. They talk video game tropes, garage punk soundtracks, hidden Easter eggs, and how this movie walked so others could run (looking at you Super Mario Bros.).They unpack deeper themes of emotional maturity, self-respect, and how Scott's biggest boss battle might've been with himself all along. Plus: Cody makes a strong case for Michael Cera supremacy, and Dave finally acknowledges he's a Young Neil. And Muppets. Because of course. Also news! Including Corey Feldman, Katy Perry and Blue Origin, and White Lotus.https://linktr.ee/PopCulturePastorPod

In this episode of Practically Christian, we dive into Scott Pilgrim vs. the World to explore how identity, self-respect, and spiritual growth shape our relationships and faith. Scott's journey isn't just about winning Ramona—it's about transformation. We unpack his false self-perception, the difference between self-respect and works-based validation, and why his ultimate victory comes not from the "Power of Love" but from the "Sword of Self-Respect."Along the way, we reflect on the gospel's contrast between striving for love and receiving grace (Ephesians 2:8-10), discuss the dangers of unhealthy relationship patterns, and ask what Christians can learn from Scott's battle with himself—his own worst enemy.Join us as we break down how true transformation happens through grace, self-awareness, and learning to love others as redeemed, not perfect, people.

Is he battling them—or theideas of them? What does this story teach us about guarding our hearts, navigating friendships, and dealing with emotional baggage in relationships? Join us as we unpack the spiritual and relational themes hidden inside Scott's pixelated path to self-awareness.

Ben and Josh are bad at Travel (skiplagging), Business (email), Reading, and reviewing current films. This time they take on the 2010 Edgar Wright film Scott Pilgrim vs. The World based on the Canadian graphic novel (manga?) by Bryan Lee O'Malley. And love it.
The delightful Netflix animated series Scott Pilgrim Takes Off starts off in the same way as the 2010 movie Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World and comic. Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) is a dim-bulb young Torontonian who falls in love and must fight to win the hand of Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). But in the animated series, the show's focus shifts to Ramona. The show reunites the entire cast of the film including Chris Evans, Jason Schwartzman, and Aubrey Plaza.
