We revisit the best scenes: the will-reading chaos, Ransom's “eat shit” moment, Blanc piecing together the timeline, Harlan's death twist, and the legendary final shot with Marta holding the mug. With Knives Out 3: Wake Up Dead Man bringing back Daniel Craig plus new cast members like Josh O'Connor (Challengers), Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla, Civil War), Andrew Scott (Sherlock, Ripley), Glenn Close (Fatal Attraction), and Kerry Washington (Scandal), this is the perfect time to reanalyze the murder-mystery masterpiece. Guest Blake Trevino returns to Beer and a Movie for a two-lager, two-Edgar Wright film kind of episode. First up is The Running Man (2025), a fresh new take that still carries some of Wright's kinetic fingerprints—though two of us liked it and one of us walked away a little underwhelmed. Then the trio dives into Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, the purest expression of Wright's comic-book pop energy, where smash-cuts become punchlines and the emotional core shines through all the visual fireworks. To keep the conversation crisp, we crack open a Sierra Nevada Premium Pils and  Tupps Beer Ease Side Lager, two clean, classic lagers that pair perfectly with Wright's ability to make even the most chaotic scenes feel smooth, deliberate, and unmistakably his.

RIGHT OUT OF THEATER For The Running Man Review! Greg Alba & Coy Jandreau step out of the theater to talk about Edgar Wright's bold new adaptation of Stephen King's novel The Running Man—a film that fuses the bleak dystopian tone of the book with the pop-energy of the Arnold Schwarzenegger 1987 cult classic. The Running Man (1987) Reaction:    • THE RUNNING MAN (1987) MOVIE REACTION!! Fi...   Baby Driver Reaction:    • BABY DRIVER (2017) IS A GROOVY BADASS RIDE...   Scott Pilgrim Vs the World Reaction:    • SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD (2010) MOVIE R...   Shaun Of The Dead Reaction:    • SHAUN OF THE DEAD (2004) IS NEAR PERFECT!!...   We dive into everything from pacing, tone, satire, and worldbuilding to the film's commentary on surveillance, AI manipulation, class divides, and the nature of modern reality-entertainment. We discuss the full cast: Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick, Anyone But You, Hit Man), Ben Affleck (The Town, Argo, Gone Girl), Josh Brolin (Avengers: Infinity War, No Country for Old Men, Dune), Colman Domingo (Euphoria, Rustin, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom), Michael Cera (Superbad, Barbie, Scott Pilgrim), and Victoria Cartagena (The Batman, Gotham, You). Greg & Coy talk about Powell's grounded take on rage and survival, Domingo's flamboyant menace, Cera playing totally against type, and how Wright balances satire with darker, bleaker sequences pulled straight from King's vision. We explore the film's biggest swings, its “spoonful of sugar vs. heavy commentary” tonal struggle, how the action compares to Edgar Wright's signature kinetic style, the dystopian world's similarity to our own, and whether the movie delivers the emotional punch it's reaching for. We compare its approach to the 1987 film, discuss what it keeps, what it updates, and why the film sometimes feels torn between King's novel and ‘80s homage. Whether you're searching for Running Man 2025 explained, Edgar Wright new movie review, Stephen King adaptation reactions, or Glen Powell Running Man breakdown, this review covers pacing, characters, themes, action, and everything fresh out of the theater. The future isn't sleek or utopian; it's loud, televised, and brought to you by your favorite corporate sponsors. In Edgar Wright's high-voltage new film, “The Running Man,” entertainment has literally become a blood sport. Based on Stephen King's 1982 novel, this isn't your father's dystopia; it's a world where survival ratings matter more than life itself, and one wrong move can make you viral in all the wrong ways. Glenn Powell stars as Ben Richards, a man framed, hunted, and transformed into TV's latest disposable hero. It's a punchy, adrenaline-fueled reinvention from a filmmaker who loves turning chaos into choreography. Wright trades the candy-coated energy of “Baby Driver” and “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” for something grittier and sweatier, a survival thriller that feels uncomfortably close to our algorithmic present. It's wickedly funny, politically sharp, and unmistakably his, even as it veers into darker, nastier terrain.READ MORE: ‘A House of Dynamite': Noah Oppenheim On Real-Time Nuclear Horror, Collaborating With Kathryn Bigelow, His ‘Jack Ryan' Film & More [The Discourse Podcast]

Aaron Alexander, Andrew Gordon & Greg Alba react to Baby Driver (2017), the stylish and adrenaline-fueled action crime thriller from acclaimed director Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World). Known for its seamless mix of music, motion, and mayhem, Baby Driver delivers one of the most unique and rhythmically charged experiences in modern action cinema. The film stars Ansel Elgort (The Fault in Our Stars, West Side Story) as Baby, a getaway driver with unmatched skill behind the wheel who choreographs every heist to the beat of his personal soundtrack. His world spirals when he falls for Debora, a kind-hearted waitress played by Lily James (Cinderella, Yesterday), and dreams of escaping his life of crime. Kevin Spacey (American Beauty, House of Cards) plays Doc, the calculating mastermind who runs Baby's crew, joined by Jon Hamm (Mad Men, The Town) as the dangerously unpredictable Buddy, Eiza González (Alita: Battle Angel, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire) as his partner Darling, and Jamie Foxx (Collateral, Django Unchained) as the volatile and menacing Bats. Episode 181 is another installation of our Page to Screen series, this time with Scott Pilgrim! We read the comic series by Bryan Lee O'Malley and watched the film adaptation. It might be the most Toronto thing we've ever read or watched!Show NotesThe Scott Pilgrim comic series was released in six digest-size volumes between 2004-2010, and was originally published in black and white. Hardcover colour versions were released between 2012-2015.Edgar Wright directed the film, with Bryan Lee O'Malley as executive producer, and he nails the stylized look so that the film feels like a comic book come to life. Both the book and the film feature some iconic Toronto locations, including Casa Loma, Sneaky Dee's, the Toronto Reference Library, and Honest Ed's (RIP).This cast is stacked! In 2020, for the 10-year anniversary of the film, most of the cast reunited for a table read of the script. You can watch it on YouTubeShout out to Canadian bands Broken Social Scene and Metric for writing songs for the fictional bands in the film (Crash and the Boys and The Clash at Demonhead respectively), and to Chris Murphy of Sloan for being the musical performance supervisor on the film. Beck wrote the songs for Scott's band, Sex Bob-omb.We truly had a blast reading and watching this. It was just so much fun! We're definitely going to watch the anime series, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.  We're officially kicking off spooky season with our next episode on October 1. We'll be talking about Auralee Wallace's recent relsease, The Late-Night Witches. Happy Tuesday! With a new version of Superman hitting movie theaters, I was so happy to chat with one of my favorite Men of Steel this week - you guys, it's Brandon Routh! You know Brandon from playing Clark Kent/Superman in Superman Returns. He also played Daniel Shaw on Chuck, Todd Ingram in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and Ray Palmer/The Atom across the Berlanti Arrow Universe. We talk about this in the interview, but I feel like Brandon's version of Superman maybe didn't get the appreciation it deserved at the time. It was interesting to talk with him about living up to the legacy of Christopher Reeve and how it feels to watch David Corenswet wear the blue cape. We also discuss how Brandon was able to find closure by playing Superman again in the 2019 Arrowverse crossover event “Crisis on Infinite Earths.” I really enjoyed this conversation and Brandon is such a lovely, grounded guy. I can't wait to see him in his new film Ick, directed by one of my favorite directors Joseph Kahn (who also directed me in the short Power/Rangers). Be sure to stick around after the interview for the hindsight, straight from a hotel in Vancouver.
