1235. Stuck Lymph? How Gua Sha, Vibration Plates & Mouth Tape Can Help With Drainage w/ Shelly Marshall

    Heal Squad x Maria Menounos

Hey Heal Squad! We're back with facial beauty expert Shelly Marshall, and this conversation goes even deeper. In this episode, we unpack the truth about fillers, how they can impact the lymphatic system over time, and why repeated use may block proper drainage and flow. Shelly explains what happens to us when lymph becomes stagnant (think cellulite and acne, crazy!), but shows us how to durian it too. Things like face yoga poses (yup, she shows Maria them!)  will not only help lift, plump, and reshape the face naturally over time, but it can help stagnant lymph flow. Shelly also shows us the benefits of a gua sha tool (and how to use it!), and why opening your lymphatic “ports” with it, is the secret to making it actually work. We also dive into the benefits of vibration plates and mouth taping, and how both can support lymph flow, posture, and even facial structure when done correctly. One of the biggest takeaways? Health is beauty. When your lymph moves, your nervous system is regulated, and your muscles are functioning the way they're meant to, your face reflects that. HEALERS & HEAL LINERS When you move your lymph, you move stagnation: Puffiness, cellulite, and dull skin aren't random. They're often signs of slowed lymph flow. Movement, breath, and gentle drainage aren't vanity, they're physiology. Your face isn't aging, it's adapting to tension: There's a big difference between strengthening facial muscles and holding stress in them. When you train the muscle intentionally (instead of freezing or overfilling it), the structure of the face changes naturally over time Health is the foundation of beauty:  When your lymph moves and your nervous system feels safe, your face follows. I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Sunday morning, the 22nd of February, 2026, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We start in that very well-known Psalm 46:10. It says: “Be still, and know that I am God;…” Then we go to the Book of Acts 16:25-26: “But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone's chains were loosed.”I remember many, many years ago, being invited to the maximum-security prison in Pretoria, and we had a wonderful meeting with those men. Those men sang their hearts out for the Lord, and as I was leaving the prison, walking through those dark corridors, one of the men who invited me said, ”You see down that passage?” I said, “Yes”. He said, “That is where the convicted criminals in the old days used to walk to the gallows where they were hung for their crimes.” And he said to me, “And Angus, they were singing hymns, every single one of them, so we trust that they repented.”What about you today? Where are you today? Are you sick in your body today? Are you so stressed out because you don't have a job? Is your business collapsing? Is it drought? Is it the Foot and Mouth disease? What is it that is pulling you down? I have just come from a men's prayer meeting where we have been singing and it lifted that chapel's roof. I want to sing with you today, but I want you to sing with me please. I am going to sing as best I can and you do the same, and let those shackles fall off you today. We are going to sing that beautiful hymn, “Be still and know that I am God.” It goes like this: Be still and know that I am God,be still and know that I am God,be still and know that I am God.I am the Lord that healeth thee.I am the Lord that healeth thee.I am the Lord that healeth thee.In Thee, O Lord, do I put my trust,in Thee, O Lord, do I put my trust,in Thee, O Lord, do I put my trust.God bless you and goodbye.

This week marks the 25th anniversary of the 2001 Foot and Mouth outbreak, which caused devastation to thousands of farms across the country. Around 6.5 million animals were culled, with a cost to the UK economy of £8 billion. Charlotte Smith meets a farmer whose animals were destroyed in the outbreak, and speaks to UK Chief Vet Christine Middlemiss about the risk of another outbreak - and whether the response would be different. The issue of biosecurity at our ports has been in the spotlight in recent months. Dover Port Health Authority announced its highest ever monthly total of seizures of illegal meat - finding 34 tonnes of it in January. We hear from chair of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs select committee Alistair Carmichael MP, who gives us his reaction to the latest figures.Sheep shearing is an international business, with skilled shearers travelling the world to work across different countries. Many shearers who come to the UK are from Australia and New Zealand and have previously been allowed entry into the country each year via a special concession for highly skilled workers. This year, the UK Home Office has decided not to give this special temporary access. The National Association of Agricultural Contractors say these shearers are essential to the farming industry, and are warning that sheep welfare may be compromised without them.Farm vets are vital to any livestock business, but there's a shortage of vets wanting to work on farms. We join a cattle vet on a visit to a Wiltshire farm to hear about her role and Charlotte speaks to BVA president Rob Williams, who explains some of the reasons behind the shortage.Farming Today This Week was presented by Charlotte Smith and produced by Jo Peacey. Charlotte Smith is in Devon to reflect on the impact of the 2001 Foot and Mouth crisis 25 years on. Highly contagious foot and mouth disease was confirmed at an Essex abattoir on 19th February 2001. The outbreak which followed led to the slaughter of 6.5 million cattle, sheep, and pigs and cost the UK economy an estimated £8 billion. The emotional cost to farming families was incalculable. Charlotte speaks to the then South West Regional Director of the National Farmers Union, Anthony Gibson, who recalls the 'cataclysm' which hit the farming community. Farming Today's Caz Graham remembers the smell of burning pyres and disinfectant on the air in Cumbria, the worst hit county. She hosted a nightly phone in on BBC Radio Cumbria during the crisis, where callers would share their grief and anger. Charlotte visits Phil Heard's farm on Dartmoor, which got caught up in the controversial 'contiguous cull' policy, in which farms neighbouring confirmed outbreaks of Foot and Mouth would also have their animals compulsorily slaughtered. Most parents are told the same thing: “They'll grow out of it.” Snoring. Mouth breathing. Grinding. ADHD symptoms. Crooked teeth. But what if they don't? In this powerful conversation, Ellie sits down with airway-focused dentist Dr. Jamie St. Marie to unpack the truth behind pediatric airway development — and why what looks cosmetic on the outside may be deeply functional underneath. You'll learn: • Why crooked teeth are often a structural message • The difference between cosmetic orthodontics and functional expansion • How mouth breathing shapes the face, brain, and nervous system • Why “wait and see” can become adult fatigue, anxiety, and sleep apnea • The real difference between Phase One and Phase Two orthodontics • What options exist for adults who were missed as kids This episode is not about perfect smiles. It's about foundation. Because children don't grow out of airway issues. They grow into adults who are tired, wired, inflamed, and grinding their teeth at night. If you're a parent — or an adult who's been told your symptoms are “normal” — this episode may change everything.

We discuss common misconceptions including the belief that clinical skills alone can build a successful clinic and the serious risk of regulatory breaches when using a non-aesthetic marketing agency. Our conversation covers key growth drivers including the limitations of word-of-mouth referrals, the importance of multiple patient touchpoints before booking, and the challenge of accurately tracking attribution. Send a textFrom an NLP perspective, what are some of the common ways we get stuck in experiences or behavior patterns because we aren't exercising as much conscious control as we really have? 1.     Holding Onto Limiting Beliefs Tips to overcome this:An easy way to begin to loosen the effects of a belief is to do Sleight of Mouth. Ep 51, 53.Take the belief statement with a cause/effect or meaning, and write out the pattern of SOM to change it. This will weaken the belief and make it open to changing into something more positive. Example: I never get to save money because I spend all that I make.Your intention is to be responsible and have money for a rainy day.Has there ever been a time when you were able to save money?Saving a little is better than saving nothing at all.2.     Engaging in Negative Self-Talk and Internal DialogueTips overcome this:Monitor your self-talk. Change any negative move-away statement to something that moves towards what you want. Negative self-talk is the result of neuro-grooving. The thought becomes habituated. Change the language to what you want. Punch or Meta reframes are good for this. I can't change my circumstances. You can change that thought!Conflict resolution between what you say and something more empowering.3.  Failing to Set Clear, Positive OutcomesTips overcome this:This is the most important principle of getting what you want. A goal or outcome must be stated in positive, active language, self-initiated and maintained, ecological, and demonstrated in see, hear, feel. I'm saving $15 a week. I'm putting it in a place where it is more difficult to access. I am doing this for myself or by myself. I may lose a couple of cups of coffee a week. I see myself putting the money in a special place or transferring it to another account. I see the amount increasing every week. I tell myself that this is easier than I thought it was going to be. I feel a sense of well-being in my chest and smile. 4. Assigning Disempowering Meanings to ExperiencesTips overcome this:Look at something in a different way, and what does that mean? Change positions to look at something. What else could this mean? Ask someone else, a friend or mentor, what else could it mean?  Read the opinions of others and widen your perspective.Talk to someone you respect and trust for a different way of looking at something. And write a story about the meaning and experience. Then rewrite it with a more positive perspective.5. Poor Management of Emotional StatesTips overcome this:Regular self-care and maintenanceVisualize yourself in happy, calm, confident statesAnchoring negative emotions with positive ones.Conflict resolution between the present state and the desired state These are all brief suggestions. Remember that certain problems, especially those that come up over and over again, may need some work with me. Especially dealing with belief issues and meaning perspective, having someone who can guide you through these saves time, effort, and yes, even money.  NLP is not necessarily self-applied. Some problems may seem simple but have more complex underlying causes.     Support the show

This week, I wanted to go back and revisit the episode that I made with Iron & Wine in the fall of 2022 about the song "Flightless Bird, American Mouth." And there are a couple reasons. One, there's a new Iron & Wine album that's coming out this month, called Hen's Teeth. And secondly, I actually have a song of my own that's coming out today, the same day as this episode, and it features Iron & Wine on the track. It's called “Stray Dogs,” and it's the first song from an album that I'm releasing in April, called In The Last Hour of Light. And this Iron & Wine episode of the podcast is what actually led to our collaboration on the song. I'd been a huge fan of Iron & Wine for two decades, and this live taping, which happened in Wimberly, Texas, at the Blue Rock Artist Ranch and Studio, was the first time that I got to meet Sam Beam from Iron & WineSo before we go back and listen to the episode itself, I thought it could be nice to talk to Sam about how this episode happened, and then how that led to the making of “Stray Dogs.” For more, visit songexploder.net/iron-and-wine.

What if the reason your easy runs feel hard is because you're doing too much, too soon?Marathon training can feel overwhelming when every run type seems important and everything feels hard at once. In this episode, I break down the simple structure behind effective marathon training and explain why most runners struggle not because they lack effort, but because they train in the wrong order. I walk through the three run types that quietly build most of your fitness, why they matter more than speed work early on, and how following the right sequence helps you stay healthy, consistent, and confident all the way to race day.Key TakeawaysMarathon training works best when it follows a clear order, starting with easy runs, long runs, and threshold work before adding speed. Skipping this order is one of the fastest ways to get injured or burned out.Easy runs and long runs are not filler workouts. They build the aerobic base that lets your body recover, adapt, and handle harder training later.Speed work only helps once your foundation is solid. Without a base, harder workouts create damage faster than your body can rebuild.Timestamps[00:34] What You'll Learn[01:47] The Problem[04:10] Use This To Crush Your Next Marathon[05:17] The Solution: How To Sequence The 16 Weeks[07:35] Run Type #1: The Easy Run[09:41] Run Type #2: The Long Run[14:05] Run Type #3: The Threshold Run[18:27] Find Out What Level Marathoner You AreLinks & Learnings
