A rare visitor from another star system has been spotted: the interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS! It was detected July 1 by the NASA-funded Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System, or ATLAS. Most known comets orbit the Sun and are bound by the gravity of the solar system ... but this object came from far beyond the pull of our Sun, traveling 137,000 miles per hour from another star. Now, scientists are racing to get a good image of it, in the hopes it can answer big questions like: What is the universe like where this comet is from? Is the solar system we live in unique? When Evan Redsky sat down to write a song about his culture, he thought about three things: the movie “Interstellar,” the movie “Contact” with Jodie Foster, and the Ojibwe word that essentially means "see you later" (because there is no word for goodbye in Ojibwe). In this chat with guest host Talia Schlanger, Evan tells us how these elements make up his new single, “Cosmic Carousel.”

Listen Now to 120 Future Now Podcast Being the editor of the podcast, this week’s show is quite timely and humorous, if I don’t say so myself..I do! Ido! On the top of the news - Another interstellar object from who knows where, made of and containing who knows what? All we know is that it was forged in another star system, alien to ours. And then there is the massively intense flooding in Texas and the Midwest. We present you with the findings of the comprehensive generalist and scientist Stefan Burns, and all the factors to consider in creating such disasterous weather..We, of course, share a few personal stories of relevance.. And then there is the Honda rocketship, a test by the company to see if they could do it. (looking good!). Dr. Future has some fun explaining how the cinematic language is key to communicating with the AI’s, and we end with a report on a strain of tomatoes that can revert thousands of generations with the twist of a gene! Why, why?? Enjoy!! Forbidden Fruit?
The Dead Internet theory ramps up and with good reason, but why? A large 12 mile wide object has just entered our solar system and scientists don't know what it is..Scottish Seagulls are killers.. apparently..support the show patreon.com/whatkastbuy me a beer buymeacoffee.com/whatkast

SpaceTime with Stuart Gary | Astronomy, Space & Science News
In this episode of SpaceTime, we dive into the latest astronomical discoveries and the implications for future space exploration.New Interstellar Visitor: Comet 3I AtlasAstronomers have identified a new interstellar object, designated 3I Atlas, which is currently traversing our solar system. Discovered by NASA's ATLAS telescope in Chile, this comet is approximately 670 million kilometers away and poses no threat to Earth, as it will pass at a safe distance of 240 million kilometers. With a velocity exceeding 51 kilometers per second, 3I Atlas is only the third confirmed interstellar visitor, following the enigmatic Oumuamua and the more familiar comet 2I/Borisov. As observations continue, scientists are eager to learn more about its origins and characteristics.China's Ambitious Mars Sample Return MissionSpeculation is mounting that China may outpace the U.S. and Europe in the race to return the first samples from Mars. The recently announced Tianwen 3 mission aims to collect Martian samples and bring them back to Earth for detailed analysis, potentially revealing whether life ever existed on the Red Planet. This mission follows China's successful deployment of the Zhurong rover and highlights the ongoing competition in space exploration. Scientists will need to target specific locations on Mars to collect samples that could provide insights into the planet's past habitability.Vera C Rubin Observatory's Stunning First ImagesAstronomers are thrilled by the first images released by the Vera C Rubin Observatory, which features an 8.4-meter telescope and a 3,200-megapixel camera. This observatory is set to conduct the world's largest sky survey over the next decade, generating an astonishing 20 terabytes of data each night. The Legacy Survey of Space and Time will provide unprecedented insights into cosmic phenomena, including asteroids, supernovae, and the mysteries of dark matter and dark energy. Australian astronomers are collaborating in this global effort, processing and analyzing the vast amounts of data generated.www.spacetimewithstuartgary.com✍️ Episode ReferencesNASA ATLAShttps://www.nasa.gov/China's Tianwen 3 Missionhttps://www.space.com/china-mars-sample-return-tianwen-3Vera C Rubin Observatoryhttps://www.lsst.org/Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/spacetime-space-astronomy--2458531/support.

Discover the incredible interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS, the third object from beyond our solar system spotted on July 1, 2025, by NASA's ATLAS telescope. Moving at 135,000 mph, this 12-mile-wide comet is the brightest and fastest of its kind. Learn about its unique trajectory, cometary activity, and why it's a rare chance to study exoplanet formation. Visible until mid-2026, 3I/ATLAS offers a glimpse into the galaxy's mysteries. Subscribe for more space discoveries!
Episode 310 An ancient Egyptian's complete genome has been read for the first time. The DNA of a man who lived in Egypt over 4500 years ago offers a new window into the ancient society and hints at surprising genetic connections with Mesopotamia. Based on forensic analysis of the man's skeleton and preserved images of different Egyptian occupations, the researchers think his most likely occupation was a potter. The team discusses what the breakthrough means for our understanding of early Egypt and even for the origin of writing. Wild orcas, or killer whales, have been seen giving gifts to humans - things like pieces of liver, rays and dead birds. This is the first time these apparent acts of altruism have been documented. Does this prove whales are capable of showing compassion or kindness? Images beamed back from the New Horizons spacecraft, which has left the solar system, have enabled the first test of interstellar navigation. By measuring the distance between two stars that it snapped images of, astronomers have been able to pinpoint its location in the galaxy. And in other interstellar news, we also just spotted an object hurtling towards our solar system. Recently named ‘Atlas', this object will be whizzing by in October, close enough for us to study. Chapters: (00:42) Ancient Egyptian genome sequenced (12:33) Killer whales give humans gifts (18:59) First demonstration of interstellar navigation Hosted by Rowan Hooper and Penny Sarchet, with guests Mike Marshall, Alex Wilkins, Joel Irish and Lori Marino. Roxy Striar & Andrew Gordon sit down for their first-time reaction to The Silence of the Lambs, one of the most iconic psychological thrillers in cinema history. Directed by Jonathan Demme (Philadelphia, Rachel Getting Married) and based on the novel by Thomas Harris, the film follows FBI trainee Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster – Taxi Driver, Panic Room, Contact) as she seeks the help of the brilliant yet terrifying Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins – The Father, The Two Popes, Westworld) to catch the elusive serial killer Buffalo Bill (Ted Levine – Monk, The Fast and the Furious). This reaction dives deep into unforgettable moments like the chilling “I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti” scene, Hannibal's eerie first meeting with Clarice Starling, “Well, hello Clarice” (a line forever etched in pop culture), Clarice's intense interview sessions with Hannibal Lecter, Buffalo Bill's disturbing transformation scenes including “It puts the lotion on its skin” and “Put the lotion in the basket!” plus the terrifying night vision climax that remains one of the most suspenseful endings in cinema history. The film also stars Scott Glenn (The Bourne Ultimatum, The Leftovers) as Jack Crawford, and Brooke Smith (Grey's Anatomy, Interstellar) as Catherine Martin.
