This week on Horror Hour with the Hanna's, we look back at Danny Boyle's genre-redefining horror-thriller 28 Days Later (2002)—the film that breathed new (and terrifyingly fast) life into the zombie subgenre. With Cillian Murphy leading a standout cast and Alex Garland's bleak script laying the groundwork, we explore how this British indie horror became one of the most influential films of the 2000s.We dive into its raw digital aesthetic, haunting score, and chilling depiction of a society brought to its knees by the Rage virus. Is it a zombie movie? A pandemic parable? A post-apocalyptic survival tale? Yes—and we're unpacking all of it.Follow Us on Instagram and TikTok: @horrorhourwiththehannasMusic by Aries Beats - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPpnxLYrzVA
Welcome to the LIVING FOR THE BOYLE review series! Daniel Francis Boyle originally hailed from Manchester, England and his filmmaking career took off thirty years ago in 1995 with the release of acclaimed cult thriller Shallow Grave. And ever since then, Danny Boyle (as he's officially known) has carved out a uniquely successful career not only achieving box office success several times but also winning a few Oscars along the way. During this time period, he has also become one of MY personal favorite directors, having helmed excellent ORIGINAL stories spanning several genres including children's fantasy, science fiction, crime drama, horror, and biopic. Over the next few months, I will be reviewing some of my favorite entries from his filmography in the lead-up to the long-awaited sequel to one of his more successful films….28 Years Later which will be released in the U.S. on June 20!Once Upon A Time, the edgy director of Trainspotting and 28 Days Later decided to make a different type of movie....a FAMILY movie. :) It's a touching story about a recently widowed father (James Nesbitt) who moves his two young sons to the suburbs....when one day, his youngest son Damian (Alex Etel) suddenly discovers in their backyard.....a bag filled with cash! A LOT of cash no doubt so Damian and his brother (Lewis McGibbon) embark on their own adventure trying to figure out EXACTLY what to do this with this new-found fortune....and what results is a delightful whimsical story involving (among many different things) the transition to the Euro, Mormon neighbors who can transport a LOT of appliances via bicycle, and one of our heroes getting to know all of the most well-known Catholic saints. It's a true original. Up this week a very fragile Ben and Jack return to discuss Trainspotting. First up an apology of being so frighteningly behind on bringing the pod to you this week - all will be revealed as to why. So... Trainspotting taken from the book by Irvine Welsh, which first became a stage show before then becoming A Danny Boyle classic. But what's it all about?Well firstly heroin. But is it just heroin? Is it about addiction and the idea of trying to understand the world in which we inhabit. We see the film apply a critical lense to the group of heroin addicts at the films core but does it judge? Was the film harsh enough on the effects of heroin? Now nearly 30 years on the perspective on heroin has changed substantially but Ben and Jack have a nose into whether young men are still plagued by the same problems that the film was discussing in the mid 90's. We take a look at the character of Renton, whether he's a hero or whether he's a villain before looking at some of the more brutal and uncomfortable scenes. Fantastic bit of fine wine of war crime today - plus only one man for MVP!Lots to come on what to watch this weekend - see you all on Friday!! Hosted on Acast. What if the world forgot The Beatles… and only you remembered? On this episode of The Clean Slate Podcast, we're diving into Yesterday (2019), the feel-good musical fantasy directed by Danny Boyle and written by Richard Curtis. We break down the film's high-concept premise, its charming (and questionable) take on fame, and how the music of The Beatles is used to explore identity, artistry, and what it means to be original. Plus, we ask the big question: would YOU have done anything differently?
This week we return to our Must See Horror feature discussing a Top 100 horrors of all time list and make our own opinion on whether we feel it truly is a must see. This time we decide the fate of Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later a shot of rage into the decaying corpse of the zombie genre in the early 2000's and a star making turn for several actors especially one day Oscar Winner Cillian Murphy. We discuss the films status as Must See Horror as well as key scenes, actors and the overall quality and loo of the film. So get ready to either join us in the future or rage against us as we decide if 28 Days Later is a Must See Horror. Joe & Adam are diving back into the Danny Boyle cinematic well — this time with T2 Trainspotting (2017), the long-awaited sequel to the iconic Brit flick. The whole gang is back - Spud, Sick Boy, Renton, and Begbie - and so is Boyle's stylish storytelling. Our hosts break down the film, debate Ewan McGregor's hit-or-miss filmography, and (for once) actually talk about the movie more than usual. Plus, Joe's homegrown Kevin Bacon game makes a triumphant return, alongside the classic Box Office game and the all-important Picking Next Week's Film game. Got a film you forgot you forgot? The crew of the Icarus II includes a physicist (Oscar-Winner Cillian Murphy), a horticulturalist (Oscar-Winner Michelle Yeoh), an engineer (Chris Evans), a navigator (Rose Byrne), a sun-drenched psychologist (Cliff Curtis) and is lead by fearless Captain Kaneda (Emmy-Winner Hiroyuki Sanada). This space adventure received strong reviews back in 2007 but sadly never received much of a theatrical release and was a box office bomb. 28 Days Later is a "Zombie" movie made with a TV Camera that you watch on a big screen. It's really great! We talk about the practical and impractical applications of digital technology, materiality and zombie movies, the movie's depiction of fascism and soildering, then and now, and also what a spectacular bummer this thing is. Read a great essay about filmic materiality and the zombie movie here. Research also pulled up this extemely weird but kind of nifty essay about how 28 Days Later is kind of about the new apocolyptic bent that food writing took in the early aughts. A very good interview with cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle can be read here. Matt reccomends 'Cinema's First Nasty Women,' an anthology fron Kino Lorber, available now. Corbin reccomends Dinner in America. He also likes that new Pixar show on Disney+ but your milage might vary. Next Week's episode is about either Spy Kids 2 or 3, we havent quite decided yet. If anyone had a strong opinion about which is the superior one, tell us I guess.
We’re excited to introduce you to a show we know you’ll love: Talk Easy. Hosted by Sam Fragoso, Talk Easy is a weekly series of intimate conversations with artists, activists, and politicians—where people sound like people. Actor Dev Patel has pursued interesting, complex roles in Hollywood since his arrival in Slumdog Millionaire fifteen years ago. He joins us today to discuss Monkey Man, his directorial debut and most personal project to date. At the top, we walk through the Hindu mythology that inspired the film, his decade-long fight to get the project greenlit, and the conditions of filming on an island during the pandemic. Then, Dev describes his intense creative process, how he landed his TV debut at sixteen as a sex-crazed teenager on Skins, and his life-changing role in Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire. On the back-half, Patel reflects on his years in The Newsroom, the films that followed, including Garth Davis’ Lion and David Lowery’s The Green Knight, and how director/producer Jordan Peele saved Monkey Man from oblivion. 11 Jahre KINO+. Zum Beispiel THE GORGE, BROKEN RAGE, THE CROW: DIE KRÄHE (das Original) und THE WITCHER: SIRENS OF THE DEEP. Oder eben über BARBARIAN, A BEAUTIFUL DAY, DAME, KÖNIG, AS, SPION, unseren Buchstaben-Spender APOCALYPSE NOW - FINAL CUT und den lang nicht mehr thematisierten A.I. Daniel Pemberton is an Academy Award-nominated English composer and songwriter. In 1994, at the age of 16, he recorded an album in his bedroom using a multitrack cassette recorder. It caught the attention of the music producer Pete Namlook, who released it on his label, leading to a flurry of soundtrack commissions. In the years that followed, my guest wrote music for TV shows including Peep Show, The Dark Crystal, Enola Holmes, and Slow Horses. But it's his feature film work for which he is best known. He has collaborated with many of the world's leading directors, composing for Ridley Scott's The Counselor, Danny Boyle's Steve Jobs, Guy Ritchie's The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Michael Mann's Ferrari, and Aaron Sorkin's The Trial of the Chicago 7 –– for which he was nominated for an Oscar. He has also composed the soundtrack for the Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and several video games including LittleBigPlanet and Concord. In 2009, the Guardian's Paul Moody said of my guest: “few know his name but millions hear his music almost every day.” Be attitude for gains. https://plus.acast.com/s/my-perfect-console. Directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland, 28 Days Later is the post-apocalyptic horror film starring Cillian Murphy. Luke and Jae revisit the zombie-ridden apocalypse back in 2002. A group of misguided animal rights activists free a caged chimp infected with the "Rage" virus from a medical research lab. When London bike courier Jim (Cillian Murphy) wakes up from a coma a month after, he finds his city all but deserted. On the run from the zombie-like victims of the Rage, Jim stumbles upon a group of survivors, including Selena (Naomie Harris) and cab driver Frank (Brendan Gleeson), and joins them on a perilous journey to what he hopes will be safety.

We discuss the cast of breakout stars and how the movie feels like it could be a hit new release this year and not a box office flop from 2007, strange stylistic choices, cosmic horror, a troubling haircut, and just what the 20th Century Fox logo is supposed to be. SANDY McGREGOR talks about VACUUMING COMPLETELY NUDE IN PARADISE. First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on January 19th 2025. It's perhaps a bit of a strange one this week, or maybe it's just a bit of an obscure one. Anyway, our old pal SANDY McGREGOR got in touch and told me that he really fancied talking about VACUUMING COMPLETELY NUDE IN PARADISE, which seemed an odd request at the time, but, well, you know what they say, live and let live. Anyway, after my initial bafflement, it turns out that VACUUMING COMPLETELY NUDE IN PARADISE is a film for television first broadcast in September 2001 written by JIM CARTWRIGHT and directed by DANNY BOYLE, just under three months after the broadcast of another hard-hitting collaboration on STRUMPET which starred CHRISTOPHER ECCLESTON. VACUUMING starred TIMOTHY SPALL in a barnstorming BAFTA winning performance as the aggressive high-performance salesman TOMMY RAG, alongside MICHAEL BEGBY as the reluctant trainee PETE, alongside a whole cavalcade of the kind of appalling characters conjured up to represent the hard-selling cutthroat business of selling vacuum cleaners door-to-door at the turn of the century. What was it that drew SANDY towards this obscure televisual delight, you may well be asking yourselves? Well, theatrical representations of Salesmen had been very much on his mind after he'd recently been watching GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS by DAVID MAMET in the theatre, and, after making comparisons with the rather more subdued American Classic DEATH OF A SALESMEN by ARTHUR MILLER, he decided to complete a trilogy of sorts with this TV movie that, in many ways, ploughs very similar storytelling furrows as the weekly television dramas of PLAY FOR TODAY did in the last century and might very much be considered part of the continuation of that proud legacy, which often made for television that could occasionally be just as shocking and challenging in its own way in perhaps less liberated times. Running at seventy-five minutes, this stylistic, high-octane, and sometimes terrifying tour-de-force pulls few punches, and portrays a seedy, sleazy world that doesn't hold back on the language and attitudes that were commonplace in that sort of business at that time, and, as a very dark tragicomedy, can leave you feeling both tainted and exhilarated by the experience of watching it. Anyway, having hopefully kept his clothes very much on, SANDY joined me to talk about his experience of watching this television curiosity, and I hope you'll stick with us across this next hour despite the hard-hitting nature of the subject matter, and I do hope you enjoy it. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.

It's our 650th episode. Over 13 years of podcasting. But even so, we usually don't hit the classics. Yet when we do hit each 50th episode, we do decide to do one. As usual, we put up a poll on our Facebook page, Dark Discussions Podcast, and let you, the listeners and contributors to the Facebook group make the decision. The winner of our poll was 28 DAYS LATER from 2002.From IMDB: "Four weeks after a mysterious, incurable virus spreads throughout the United Kingdom, a handful of survivors try to find sanctuary." The film was directed by Danny Boyle, written by Alex Garland, and starred Cillian Murphy.Listen to us discuss this classic for one of our most important episodes, the 650th one.

As a post-holiday treat, Marvel Animation dropped its first look at Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, premiering in January. The short teaser trailer gives us a good look at the Hudson Thames-voiced Peter Parker and a glimpse of Norman Osborn, who is voiced by Colman Domingo. Other voice talent for the show features Hugh Dancy, Charlie Cox, and Vincent D'Onofrio. If you enjoyed diving back into the dark, broody, Gotham of Matt Reeves Batman universe during The Penguin, get ready to be disappointed. It was announced that The Batman II has been pushed from its 2026 release date to October 1, 2027. The film is set to begin production in the last half of 2025 and DC co-chief James Gunn cited Reeves working to perfect the script as some of the reason for delay. The October 2, 2026 date formerly held by The Batman II is being taken by a film coming from The Revenant director Alejandro González Iñárritu and Tom Cruise. The triumph of the sequel movies continues at the box office this holiday season with Sonic the Hedgehog 3 having a very successful opening before Christmas to a $62 million domestic debut and has now climbed to a worldwide total of $159.5 million. Though Disney's prequel, Mufasa: The Lion King, fell short of opening projections, the holiday season has been kind to the film as it currently holds a $221.7 million global box office. Wicked and Moana 2 still hold the overall crowns at the box office and Matt Eggers' Nosferatu, which debuted on Christmas Day, is sitting quietly but solidly at $26 million domestically for three days. The first trailer for A24 dark comedy Death of a Unicorn has been released. The film, written and directed by Alex Scharfman in his directorial debut, stars Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega, and hits theaters in the spring of 2025. Sony Pictures CEO Tony Vinciquerra recently told the Los Angeles Times that Kraven the Hunter is “probably the worst launch we had” in the nearly eight years he's been at the studio, adding: “I still don't understand, because the film is not a bad film." Vinciquerra also blamed the press for the bombing of Madame Web. Paramount+ has renewed the Jeremy Renner-led series Mayor of Kingstown for a fourth season. Netflix has released the first trailer for The Electric State, a sci-fi thriller from the Russo Brothers that stars Chris Pratt, Ke Huy Quan, and Millie Bobby Brown. The film will debut on March 14. Paramount is moving forward with Sonic the Hedgehog 4 to continue the video game adaptation film franchise. Currently, the film is targeting a Spring 2027 release. With an animated series already in development, Sony Animation and Netflix are looking to expand on building on their Ghostbusters universe as sources tell Deadline the two are teaming on a Ghostbusters animated film. Insiders add that the project is still in early development but that Kris Pearn is attached to direct. HBO has renewed Dune prequel series Dune: Prophecy for a second season. Sony has announced that the 28 Years Later sequel titled 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple directed by Nia Decosta will hit theaters on January 16, 2026. The movie is the second installment in Danny Boyle and Alex Garland‘s planned zombie apocalypse follow up trilogy. Jared Leto will officially play villain Skeletor in the upcoming live action Masters of the Universe from Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel Films. The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Evil Dead Rise filmmaker Lee Cronin is writing and directing a new take on The Mummy for New Line. Horror powerhouses Atomic Monster and Blumhouse, along with Cronin's banner Doppelgängers, are producing and the film is currently set for an April 17, 2026 release. Sony has announced that filmmaker Tom Gormican's reimagining of the 1997 snake-focused horror movie Anaconda will hit theaters on December 25, 2025. Paul Rudd and Jack Black star in the new feature from Columbia Pictures.
The fellas load up on sunscreen as they take a trip directly into the sun to shine some light on Danny Boyle and Alex Garland's hugely underseen space film, Sunshine. Chris shares some lore on the production and botched release of the film, detailing why this movie fell so hard through the cracks before Mateo and Seb both watch it for the first time. Is this a true buried classic of 21st century sci-fi?
Welcome to Season 4 of The Movies! It's wild to think this will be my fourth year reviewing movies, interviewing critics, authors and filmmakers, waxing poetic over the majesty of one Rachel McAdams. This episode sees me addressing the state of my union, sharing goals for the new year (interview Danny Boyle for 28 YEARS LATER, because dear JESUS, that trailer) and thanking everyone who's given a hoot about the show during Season 3. So, pop some bubbly and raise that glass! It's time to celebrate a new year, new season, great movies and the pursuit of getting our collective acts together. Bring on Season 4!
28 Years Later, 23 years later. I'm the asshole for bringing up the fact that people are constantly falling asleep and snoring in Los Angeles movie theaters. The resplendent bliss of Arby's. I mostly complain about several podcasts from the last week. I went to see “Horizon,” the Kevin Costner western, so you don't have to.

[School of Movies 2024] This is an exceptionally long-awaited episode for us. One of the very first films discussed on our very first episode, way back in April 2007, mentioned repeatedly in the intervening 17 years, and promised over and over. Now we finally reach it, one of the most special and meaningful films to us. It was directed by Danny Boyle after 28 Days later but before Slumdog Millionaire. It very overtly draws inspiration from Aliens and 2001, it stars Cillian Murphy, Chris Evans, Michelle Yeoh, Rose Byrne, Hiroyuki Sanada Cliff Curtis, Benedict Wong and Mark Strong. It was written by Alex Garland, scored by John Murphy and Underworld, it made one twentieth the box office of Christopher Nolan's Interstellar. ...and it is quite literally BRILLIANT.
Danny Boyle directed a good film that was written by Aaron Sorkin called "Steve Jobs". It's a biographical film depicting Apple Computers Co-Founder and Visionary Tech Giant, Steve Jobs. The film centers around three key moments in Jobs' life and in each of the periods shows us who this guy Steve Jobs is and we should care about him and the people who surround him. The scenes really give out a clear but complex picture of Steve Jobs. To be a visionary such as himself, you must some type of complication, something that stand out in your life. I dig the film for its intense dialog concerning the task at hand, which is basically making the unveiling of the future is as perfect as it can try to be. I dig the cinematography, where the space of a setting is used. Boyle gave us the feeling of a play of sorts because characters spent their time in closed doors in a public venue. Interesting to see how actors can use their space and setting for their effective skills. the use of editing where characters appear and disappear in the film and how we get the reaction shots from the characters which relates as how WE would react to a certain exchange of dialog and/or action. The flaw I would give for this film is partially on the type of character this version of Steve jobs is. Almost an egomaniac. It has a bit hard to swallow that pill.Three and a half out of four tokes.
[School of Movies 2024] Nolan-Vember comes to a close as we handle possibly his most emotionally-driven film. Drawing heavily from 2001: A Space Odyssey and Contact (two films we've already covered) Nolan presented the most populist blockbuster version of the speculative possibilities of what happens when a human being goes tear-assing into a black hole. This is very much our wheelhouse when it comes to the philosophical quandary of Stay or Go, regarding an increasingly uninhabitable planet Earth. So, the conclusions reached in this grand, cosmic, time-dilating cathedral of a smash-hit matter a great deal. And there are definitely elements we love about this one... but in consequence of Nolan's handling and points of focus there are also things that drive us crazier than HAL 9000 speed-dating GLaDOS. Fortunately, there is a film that forms a perfect sparring partner with this one; Danny Boyle's Sunshine (2007). One twentieth as successful with general audiences, but it handles very similar techno-philosophical and theological concepts in a way that hits devastatingly hard with us... and that long-awaited show is coming next week. I chose to close out this month on the astonishing music of Hans Zimmer, live from Prague with a full orchestra, celebrating his scores for Nolan in this, in Inception and in the Dark Knight Trilogy.
In front of an audience at the Newport Beach Film Festival, the Scotsman, who burst on to the scene in 1995's 'Trainspotting,' reflects on his early collaborations with Danny Boyle, his uncertainty about committing to do George Lucas' second 'Star Wars' trilogy and why, in recent years, he has increasingly gravitated toward TV limited series.
