Mike and Champ return just before Halloween to discuss one of the biggest horror films of the year in Danny Boyle's long-awaited 28 Years Later. The guys talk about the fresh approach to the genre, as well as its divisive third act. Also, did the live action How to Train Your Dragon justify its existence? Also the fiery spectacle of every day people doing extraordinary things in The Lost Bust. The episode ends with a look at the year in film from 1997.

28 Days Later was chosen by show supporter Dylan — and it's one of the most defining British horror films of the 21st century. Directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland, the film was a bold reinvention of the zombie genre, injecting it with raw energy, political undertones, and a sense of realism rarely seen in horror at the time. Shot primarily on digital video using Canon XL1 cameras, Boyle and cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle created a gritty, almost documentary-style aesthetic that captured a hauntingly desolate London. The small budget of around $8 million forced the team to rely on guerrilla-style filmmaking, often closing off sections of central London for only minutes at a time during early mornings to achieve its eerily empty cityscapes.Production began in 2001 and was marked by a collaborative, experimental spirit. Boyle and Garland drew inspiration from a mix of sources — from George A. Romero's Dead series to British social realism and viral outbreak fears of the late 1990s. The cast, led by relative unknowns at the time, brought grounded performances that added emotional weight to the film's chaotic energy. With its pulsing soundtrack, handheld visuals, and visceral tone, 28 Days Later became both a critical and commercial success, revitalizing interest in the zombie genre and influencing a decade of horror and apocalyptic cinema that followed. If you enjoy the show, we have a Patreon, so become a supporter here.Referral links also help out the show if you were going to sign up:NordVPNNordPassTrailer Guy Plot SummaryA deadly virus. A deserted city. And a handful of survivors left to face the unthinkable. From director Danny Boyle comes a new vision of terror — raw, relentless, and shockingly real. When the world collapses overnight, one man wakes up to find that civilization is gone… and something unspeakable has taken its place.28 Days Later — from the ashes of humanity, fear runs faster than ever.Fun FactsThe opening hospital scenes with Cillian Murphy were filmed in the empty Day Ward of a real London hospital that was being decommissioned. The haunting shot of abandoned Piccadilly Circus required the crew to block traffic for only 10 minutes at sunrise, with police assistance to keep curious drivers away.Christopher Eccleston joined the film fresh off his acclaimed role in The Second Coming and brought a darker, militaristic edge to his performance. The movie's terrifying “infected” movement was achieved by casting trained dancers and athletes to create unnervingly fast and fluid motion.Composer John Murphy created the now-iconic track In the House – In a Heartbeat, which went on to be used in Kick-Ass and The Last of Us trailers.Danny Boyle avoided traditional zombie makeup — instead, red contact lenses and digital blood splatter were used to keep the infected design grounded and cheap. The Rage Virus was spread through monkey blood in the film, but the opening sequence with real chimpanzees was filmed under strict animal welfare supervision.28 Days Later was the first horror movie to film inside the UK's M1 motorway tunnels, normally off-limits to filmmakers. The movie was banned in several Asian countries for its extreme violence and realistic depiction of viral infection. The success of the film led to a comic book spin-off titled 28 Days Later: The Aftermath, which bridged the story to the 2007 sequel 28 Weeks Later.thevhsstrikesback@gmail.comhttps://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback

SEASON 2 - EPISODE 164 - 28 YEARS LATER - with Anthony Dod Mantle In this special episode of the Team Deakins Podcast, cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle (Season 1, Episode 68) returns to discuss his work on 28 YEARS LATER. The film was shot extensively using modified iPhones, and Anthony shares his early conversations with director Danny Boyle about the film's intended rural setting that informed their decision to commit to using the devices. Anthony later explains how he jailbroke the iPhone's camera system with the help of tech advisors and employees at Apple, and we discuss how the limitations of the phone forced Anthony to adjust the amount of light he used while filming. We also learn how the bar cam system actually works, and Anthony details the type of VFX work done throughout the film. We later investigate why the sequel was shot with an Alexa, and Anthony describes the elaborate build of the Bone Temple location featured prominently in both films. - Recommended Viewing: 28 YEARS LATER - This episode is sponsored by Sandstorm & Aputure
Thomas har sett live-action-versionen av HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON.
This week on Shat the Movies, we're diving into The Beach (2000), where Leonardo DiCaprio ditches civilization for a secret island paradise, and things go off the rails fast. Directed by Danny Boyle and loaded with Y2K angst, hallucinatory madness, and a killer soundtrack, this film tries to mix Lord of the Flies, Apocalypse Now, and a Gap commercial. Gene and Big D unpack the wild tone shifts, moral chaos, and whether Leo's backpacker nightmare still holds up today. Movie Plot:The desire to find something real -- to connect with something or someone -- is what drives Richard (Leonardo DiCaprio), a young American backpacker who arrives in Thailand with adventure on his mind. Etienne (Guillaume Canet) and Francoise (Virginie Ledoyen) join him on an adventure to "The Beach," a mystical paradise. However, this paradise is less than perfect. Day 18 – Episode 168: 28 Years Later (2025)On Day 18 of The Conner & Smith Show's 31 Days of Halloween, Ryan and I dive into 28 Years Later — the long-awaited and utterly breathtaking continuation of Danny Boyle and Alex Garland's apocalyptic saga. What we expected to be another grim survival horror instead left us both deeply moved, even brought to tears by its haunting beauty, humanity, and poetic sense of closure. The film honors the legacy of 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later while evolving into something profoundly emotional — a meditation on time, trauma, and the cost of rebuilding. This isn't just another sequel; it's a requiem for the world we once knew.Support The Conner & Smith Show on Patreon here:

After nearly two decades in development hell, the long-awaited continuation of the 28 Days Later saga finally chewed its way into cinemas. The film sees a time jump as well, as it is now nearly three decades since the Rage virus turned the U.K. into mindless zombies. We follow Spike, a young boy who has grown up on an isolated island off the British coast, as he navigates a coming-of-age trip to the mainland impress his father by killing his first infected. Of course, things go sideways, and what starts as bonding turns into a fight for survival - and the realization that the living must face their own inner rage. Greetings haomies! As we march onward into techno/christofascist hell, this episode we review not one, but two of the year's most highly anticipated genre films, 28 YEARS LATER and BRING HER BACK. For those counting, it's been 18 years since the 2007 sequel to 2002's modern horror classic, 28 Days Later. In the years since, Danny Boyle has won an oscar and Alex Garland graduated from screenwriter to becoming a formidable director (and show creator) in his own right. What'd these two come up with for the long awaited sequel, 28 YEARS LATER, and what did the three of us think? It's on Netflix currently if you've yet to see it or would like to give it a rewatch. BRING HER BACK is the follow up to the film debut of brothers Danny and Michael Philipou, writer/directors of 2022's breakout A24 horror hit, Talk To Me. How did the Brothers Philipou, of former youtube horror/comedy RackaRacka video fame, do in their sophomore effort? Bring Her Back just became available to stream on HBOMAX. "Some people believe the spirit stays in the body for months after death...the more you kill, the easier it gets. Don't feel bad about it. The infection takes away their minds -- it's got no mind, it's got no soul." It's The Who Goes There Podcast Episode 440! Join our Patreon to support the show! On the thirteenth night of our #31DaysToHalloween the Mister joins me in reviewing 28 YEARS LATER (2025), from director Danny Boyle with a script by Alex Garland. Set nearly three decades after the Rage virus devastated the UK, the film focuses on a small, isolated community living on a fortified island off the English mainland. Twelve-year-old Spike (Alfie Williams) ventures onto the infected mainland with his father (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) for a coming-of-age ritual, but their journey is interrupted by mutated infected and a crisis concerning Spike's terminally ill mother, Isla (Jodie Comer). In a desperate act to find a cure, Spike defies his father to take his mother to a reclusive doctor named Kelson (Ralph Fiennes), leading them on a perilous trek where the evolving nature of both the infected and the surviving humans is revealed. The film clocks in at 1 h and 55 m, is rated R and we caught the film on Netflix but you can also catch it to buy/rent on Prime Video. I'm back on the podcast after a break in September. Today, I want to share my thoughts on '28 Years Later'—a film that Jason and I found pretty impressive. It has definitely made my list of favorites this year, alongside 'The Amateur'. I was particularly struck by the cast, especially the young lead, and the way the film balances emotional intensity with moments of humor that made us chuckle. Jason agreed, noting that the lighter moments added depth compared to darker apocalyptic tales like 'The Road'. We recalled some standout scenes, such as the crawling zombies, the memorable Alpha villain, and Ralph Fiennes' quirky doctor, along with the amusing gang in their stylish tracksuits. While we felt some plot points, especially the mother's death, could have been developed further, we both appreciated the world-building and performances. I rated it a 9/10, while Jason gave it an 8.1/10. We also considered the potential for a trilogy, especially with the sequel, 'The Bone Temple', coming out in January 2026. On a positive note, I mentioned that '28 Years Later' had a budget of $60 million and has already grossed $151 million worldwide, which is a good sign for its success before considering VOD or streaming sales. We left the theater feeling satisfied with how the film strikes a balance between seriousness Thoughts? Comments? Do so on the blog here. This time, we talk about Danny Boyle's return to the zombie movie world in 28 Years Later. The film is a super rich and endlessly interesting expansion of the themes Boyles put together in his original 28 Days Later form 2002. But now, as the world has changed (not least in the films' UK setting), 28 Years Later is that rare thing: a zombie movie that has us asking endless questions about society, life and the meaning of it all.If you think Projector Pod is the kind of thing you'd like to support, you can find our Patreon here.
Memento Mori, friends! This week, Andrew and Scotty are travelling through the quarantine zone to find a doctor, as they discuss dongs and "28 Years Later". They talk about how the movie was shot and finding beauty in death. And yes, they also talk about Samson and his large details. Of course, as always, stay tuned until the end of the episode to hear what Scotty has chosen for their next movie!"28 Years Later" was directed by Danny Boyle. In this third entry in the "28 Days Later" series, it is now 28 years after the events of "28 Weeks Later". The British Isles are now a quarantine zone. 12-year-old Spike lives in a protected community on an island connected to England only by a causeway that is accessible when the tide is low. They include a trio of titles from Criterion including a recent Oscar winner. There is everything from Tsui Hark to Dolly Parton plus a dive into the creation of a sequel to one of the best and most successful comedies ever. We're diving into 28 Years Later, the long-awaited sequel to 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later!
CW: Spoilers for 28 Days Later and discussions of disturbing subject matter.Jacob Dallas and Lenore Olson of the literary podcast The Socialist Shelf join me from Atlanta for a discussion of Danny Boyle's 28 Years Later.Set a couple of decades after the UK was consumed by the Rage Virus of the first film and is now a nation isolated from the rest of the world, 28 Years Later takes place on a small island community in Northern England that has in turn isolated itself from the mainland, and depicts the rituals of this broken society where the surviving men are the hunter gatherers and the women are the providers.28 Years Later also operates as a metaphor for the UK in the shadow of Brexit and the COVID-19 pandemic, with a society that has forgotten the details of the past but carries on. We discuss some of the provocative ideas 28 Years Later puts forward, including some sympathy for the infected, some contempt for the surviving human race, and the disturbing (and unexpectedly comedic) coda that marks this film as Extremely British, which may not have been clear to international audiences (and indeed enraged some British viewers), while setting up next January's sequel.Over 30% of all Junk Filter episodes are only available to patrons of the podcast. Send us a textSPECIAL NOTE: SEASON 15 OF THE GOOD, THE POD AND THE UGLY CELEBRATES THE USE OF THE PRACTICAL AND DIGITAL EFFECT KNOWN AS THE SQUIB. IRL GUN VIOLENCE IS INTOLERABLE AND RENOUNCED BUT... CINEMATIC VIOLENCE WILL BE CELEBRATED IN A WAY THAT MAY DISTURB SOME LISTENERS. This week TGTPTU covers the film Elephant, no not the 2000s school-shooter mood piece by Gus Van Sant filmed in Portland, OR and covered previously and paired with Scarface (1983, not the earlier, black-and-white 1932 Howard Hawkes version) in Episode 8 of this Squib Season (it's Season 15 after all, not Season 14's Redux where the hosts covered films already covered) but, rather, the 39-minute, made-for-British-TV short film directed by Alan Clarke also entitled ELEPHANT (1989). Chosen by host Thomas for its un-celebratory violence, the film tracks with Clarke's influential, wide-angle following shots (camera, not bullet) people who shoot other people (with bullets, not cameras) in mostly silent milieus but for environmental sounds, mostly very bloody. (As mentioned by cohost Ken, and for more on this camera placement and its effects and influence on Van Sant, see this video essay on the Film & Media Studies' YouTubeTM channel: https://youtu.be/Z5B8_IDhJQo.) Produced and defended by Danny Boyle, Elephant's unspoken (again, mostly silent with dialogue barely heard in just one scene between four blokes kicking around the football toward the middle of the flick) subject is The Troubles in the UK. In what is either bravery or foolery (callers into the network after this movie aired were split), working class and Brit-born Clarke--by then a celebrated veteran of the medium of the British TV issues film--stripped the original screenplay of dialogue when making the film in order to focus on the act of gun murder as was then currently occurring. With one un-notable exception, each of the eighteen scenes of gun violence has the shooter followed into the setting where the homicide is to occur, shoot his victim, leave followed by the camera/audience, and then cut back to silent moments of each murdered man filling the frame with his recently un-lifed corpse. Elephant would be Clarke's penultimate work, with The Firm (no, not the adaption of the John Grisham novel that gave Holly Hunter the nom for Best Supporting Actress the same year she won Best Actress for The Piano as The Firm you're thinking of is by Sydney Pollack) also shot for British television and aired in 1989 as his final. Clarke would cross the pond to see if he could sell out in America (according to Ken) and die in 1990 at the age of 54. The film resoundingly fails the Bechdel test. Host Ryan calls Clarke a coward. Eén ding is duidelijk: There can be only one!28 Years Later ReviewJelle heeft deze week 28 Years Later gecheckt, de langverwachte opvolger van Danny Boyle's baanbrekende 28 Days Later en 28 Weeks Later.
The Summer of Postscript has begun! With the release of the audacious 28 Years Later in June, we are kicking off this miniseries by heading back to Edinburgh with the Rosilio brothers to examine Danny Boyle's T2 Trainspotting. How did a sequel to the first Trainspotting even come to be? How does this film fare as a legacy sequel? Why does this movie handle nostalgia better than almost all of contemporaries? Is Danny Boyle the best digital filmmaker alive? Come join us as we begin our farewell to summer.
As we head closer to the 2025 spooky season, we're offering a grab bag of assorted films for you, continuing this week with 28 YEARS LATER, the long-deferred sequel to the groundbreaking thriller 28 Days Later from 2002. The creative team of Danny Boyle and Alex Garland return to the world of the infected to offer up a thoughtful and disarmingly poignant story about the survivors of the viral infection who not only struggle to sustain life under the constant threat of attack but also must face the harsh realities of life beyond merely the trappings of the apocalypse.Nathan is joined this week by Kate Micham, his sister and new friend to the show, to dive into this film's terrors and wonders, reminding us all to remember that we must die and to remember that we must love. On today's episode of the Occult Symbolism and Pop Culture with Isaac Weishaupt podcast we have the August BONUS episode for supporter feeds! We dive deep into the occult symbolism of Danny Boyle's Sunshine, exploring how the film functions as a modern allegory for death, rebirth, and humanity's obsession with the solar deity. We unpack the story of Icarus as a metaphor for approaching the divine unprepared, and the recurring symbolism of the number seven as the union of spirit and matter. The crew's obsession with staring into the sun becomes a study in ego death and the alchemical process of Nigredo, while the Black Sun imagery and cube-shaped bomb reflect Saturnian forces, time, and entropy. We'll connect the hidden sun concept from Crowley and Kenneth Grant to Gnostic and Freemasonic ideas of oppositional polarities, and show how Pinbacker represents the ultimate adversarial initiator, testing humanity's capacity to transcend mortal limitations. Ultimately, Sunshine is a meditation on facing death, confronting the constraints of matter, and creating a new sun within the sun—a ritualistic and esoteric journey encoded in a sci-fi epic.FULL EPISODE NOW UP AD-FREE ON ALL SUPPORTER FEEDS! MOVIE MIKE'S MOVIE PODCAST: Mike talks to Adam Stein and Zach Lipovsky who directed Final Destination Bloodlines. They share stories behind the coolest deaths, how veteran stuntwoman Yvette Ferguson came out of retirement to become the oldest person ever set on fire on camera, the films that inspired them to become directors, and the episode of Goosebumps that Zach starred in as a kid! Final Destination Bloodlines is now available on digital and on 4K UHD on July 22! In the Movie Review, Mike talks about 28 Years Later starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland reunite. It's been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected. Blank Check is going back to the British Isles with Danny Boyle, Alex Garland, and one extraordinarily well-endowed zombie this week as they discuss 28 Years Later. This movie has so much to love in it – wet bones, third-act Ralph Fiennes, Jodie Comer doing a thing, the Angel of the North, Teletubbies, the aforementioned well-endowed zombies, mind-bending digital photography, and did we mention THE WET BONES??? Be prepared for David to get REAL British, for Marie to cry on mic, for Griffin to bring up the manosphere, and for Ben to learn about Operation Yewtree. Gosh, we love this movie so much. The new apocalyptic horror film 28 Years Later takes place in the same world as 28 Days Later, where a deadly virus transformed the citizens of the U.K. into rabid blood-spewing creatures. The new film brings back the original's director and screenwriter, Danny Boyle and Alex Garland. It's set on a small island where a group of survivors (including Jodie Comer and Aaron Taylor-Johnson) eke out a modest existence. A desperate expedition reveals new allies and new horrors – because the infected have evolved.Follow Pop Culture Happy Hour on Letterboxd at letterboxd.com/nprpopculture Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
