Professional dancers are missing an opportunity to share their knowledge. We are such perfectionists, and it is more impactful to be genuine. I want to share more dancers' stories and advice as well as teaching tips they have picked up along the way. Will you share?
There are many ways to use your computer and phone to teach remotely. I list all the ideas to get you started putting valuable information out to your dancers. YouTube Link: https://youtu.be/Y-Z7XmSOa5k
Dancers struggle with two things: walking and standing still. We are great at moving bodies through space in person. Our whole modality for teaching shifted in a matter of days, but we did it. Imagine what we will be able to do with technology working for us instead of against us?
No one was ready for the pandemic. America was definitely not for as advanced as we are as an intelligent society. Dancers lost a whole season. It was not on purpose. Competition owners are husbands and wives and sons and daughters. They are entrepreneurs that took a severe his like we all did. My heart goes out to the Class of 2020. You make a dent in the universe because you lived through this.
At any given time, I can be a victim of the racial injustice in America. This a heartfelt unedited statement and commitment to making a difference. "You don't fit the part" is no longer an acceptable answer. The dance industry has to step up to a higher level and I have accepted the challenge to be a leader in the fight!
The phrase "use your center" is said by almost every dance teacher at least once in every class. Everyone says it, but few can explain it until now. Check the Youtube video as well:https://youtu.be/4TsLuMgJEb0
So many of our decisions are routine. It is human nature. Too often we do things because they have always been done and we don't really know why we do them. This time outside the studio has been beneficial to regroup, reevaluate and redirect our energy to be better than we were before.
As educators, we must be aware of the uniqueness of the dancers in our classes. All dancers are not built the same. Striving for balance is the goal!
This is an informal commute talk. The question on Facebook was, "What would you like to see change in the dance competition industry next season?" It was interesting how the responses came in.
