Broadway star Desi Oakley joins The Art of Kindness with Robert Peterpaul live from a 2023 Jimmy Awards rehearsal. She discusses coaching the high school nominated performers to be their unique selves and much more in this special bonus episode. Desi Oakley is a self-prescribed artist, creator, people person, go-getter and true jane of all trades. One of the Kansas native's first roles was ironically Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. She then brought her Oztastic sparkle to her Broadway debut in Wicked, starting as a swing and then taking over ensemble and understudy tracks as Nessarose and Elphaba. Since then she's appeared on Broadway in the 2014 Les Miserables revival and earned much attention for her beautiful portrayal of Jenna in Waitress both on the first national tour and West End. More recently, Desi's name was on everyone's lips as she played Roxie Hart in Chicago on Broadway. "I really feel like I had two choices in that moment. And the first choice is to, you know, just panic and run off stage. And the second option is to just roll with it and realize you've already shown up." This is what Broadway, National Tour, and West End star Desi Oakley thought to herself just before the curtain went up on her West End debut, only hours after landing in London and finding out she'd be leading the cast of Waitress that evening. A self-proclaimed "Jane of all Trades," Desi is an actor, singer-songwriter, recording artist, composer, and coach. In today's interview she talks about creating a life as a working artist by reaching out in the business, how she shows up authentically online, and the experience that forever changed the way she speaks to herself. Broadway Drumming 101 is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.Based in NYC since 2011, Adam came to New York by way of Houston, TX where he completed his Master's Degree at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music (2008). Adam grew up in Northeast Ohio where he attended Cleveland State University (2006). Formally studying classical percussion throughout his education, Adam also actively performed as a freelancer on drum set. His classical background combined with his drum set skills gave him a unique set of skills that turned out to be very well-suited for working in musical theater. After playing its out-of-town tryout at Houston's Alley Theatre, Adam was offered the drum set chair on Frank Wildhorn's WONDERLAND when it transferred to Broadway (Spring 2011). With his foot in the door from his first Broadway show, Adam set about the work of subbing and building a reputation in and around the city. Subbing on shows as diverse as RENT, EVITA, MATILDA the Musical, AVE Q, CATS, HELLO DOLLY, ANASTASIA, THE PROM, and many more, Adam routinely demonstrates a wide-ranging versatility. A unique hybrid player, Adam is equally at home playing drum set and percussion and excels in situations that demand both contemporary drum set styles and legit classical/orchestral sensibilities. Adam's most recent NYC chairs include 2017's BANDSTAND on Broadway (TONY Nomination for Best Orchestrations and TONY WINNER for Best Choreography), Jerry Springer the Opera, and CLUELESS the Musical. When not in the theater, Adam is often found in NYC recording studios playing for singer/songwriters and composers like Desi Oakley, The Jack Mosbacher Band, Michael Mott, and David Mallamud, playing at cabaret spots like Feinstein's 54 Below, and downtown concert venues such as Rockwood Music Hall, Piano's, or The Bitter End. Adam also maintains an active teaching practice at his studio in Midtown Manhattan and produces music and drum tracks from his at-home project studio. Desi Oakley made her Broadway debut in Wicked in 2012, before going on to shows such as the Annie revival (also in 2012), the First National Tour of the revival of Evita!, Les Mis, and even starred as Jenna in the national tour of Waitress. She’s appear on TV in Gotham, and even has a couple albums of her own as a recording artist out there in the world. She could most recently be seen as Roxie Hart in Chicago. In this episode, we dive deep into some of her terrifying stories of learning piano, temporarily moving to Canada as a child, and being incredibly self-aware and not caring what people think while constantly seeking validation. She discusses why she started developing on-stage anxiety while leading the first national tour of Waitress leading to her mantra to maintaining mental health (that we discovered during the episode) called MEPCY... yeah, we made that up, but it works! She even officiated Kyrstina Alabado's wedding! Interview content begins at 1:58. A meditation lesson at 31:48 Closing standards begin at 50:45. “Oakley, you are Broadway.” After a successful run as Roxie Hart in Chicago on Broadway, and fresh off the Yankees’ Division Series win the night prior to recording, Desi Oakley joins Al in the Batter's Box. With nearly a decade of work on the back of her baseball card, Desi tells some great stories spanning anywhere from the Emerald City to Joe’s Pie Diner. She was even down for some baseball and Broadway crossover trivia in a new segment called “7th Inning Stretch.” Al volunteers his producer, Alan Seales, to serve as Desi’s lifeline for all of the baseball-related questions, and the segment goes awry quickly.
