E Pluribus Unum. Can we look at our history today and make the necessary adjustments to preserve our future as United States? Can we, will we, learn before it's too late, that escalating tensions between Teams Blue and Red are a serious threat to both sides? And to the world that will be catastrophically diminished if America's lamp of freedom is extinguished?

It's the ultimate question Jesus asks each of us. Who do you say I am? How we respond is everything. It defines who we will be on earth and where we will spend eternity.

D-Day - Invasion, Violence, Sacrifice, Death. Passion Week - Celebration to Crucifixion. Triumphant Entry. Betrayal. Sacrifice. Death. An Empty Tomb. Perfection offered up, then perfection offered us.

Have you ever noticed that virtually all aspects of American life conspire to keep us away from Jesus? How will we hear the heart of God when we constantly live among the texts, calls, or emails? Try this: choose a time and get away. No mobile device, no distractions, Nothing.

I have only words to share with you. That's all I have in my toolkit - words. Don't we all know something of the challenge of written words? Have you ever written a note, letter, or email that was misunderstood? Did someone ever read your words differently than how you wrote them? Then you know that words, on paper, only partially communicate the thoughts intended.

A nation separated from its roots will, like any plant, surely wither and die. That is the danger facing America today. Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it, and the lesson of history is that if we abandon our heritage, our future will be one of chaos and uncertainty.

What if our eye was not attracted to the whole, but the hole? It would be a terrible tragedy if the world were unable to see God's design because we withhold our portion from its view.

What King would leave his throne to elevate his subjects to positions of royalty? What person of influence would abandon the benefits of their position and assume instead the posture of the least?

America today has an integrity problem, and without integrity there will be no trust. We've disconnected ourselves from the life-support systems that nurtured us at our founding and strengthened us as we matured.

Abraham Lincoln judged that a house divided could not stand. Either it would become all the one thing, or all the other. The United States stands at a similar place today, and which "one thing" prevails will be determined by the source of the wisdom used in deciding our future course.

We believe in a God who is able to deliver us, and will deliver us. But our prayers are offered in faith ... they are prefaced with "your will be done" and with trust that a sovereign God will answer according to what he has purposed.

The Les Miserables police inspector Javert had it right: "the law is inside out, the world is upside down." An objective standard that allows us to distinguish between right and wrong is a cornerstone of wisdom and an absolutely essential quality in governing justly. What will we choose, wisdom or hooey?

Sometimes the problems of life can be so overwhelming that hope for change is extinguished, and we can easily come to believe that the ugly realities of today will be our tomorrows forever. If that's you, if you're looking forward to the time when you can look back, know that God's plan is to give us a hope and a future, and that God has the power not just to change but to make new.

Sometimes it seems as if our need is too great and our faith is too small. If you're there, remember Paul's message, "God's grace is sufficient."

Values have consequences, and America is at a decision point: what kind of world do we want to live in, and what kind of world do we want our children to inherit. The choice is ours.
