If you believe the highest goal of investing is simply to earn a high return, you may be overlooking a deeper purpose—how our money can be used for good.As investors, we've been given resources to manage, not just for profit, but in alignment with God's will and values. It's easy to see investing through a purely earthly lens, but God invites us into a much greater story. Today, Robin John joins us to explore that bigger vision.Robin John is co-founder and Chief Executive Officer at Eventide Asset Management, an underwriter of Faith & Finance. He's also the author of the forthcoming book, The Good Investor: How Your Work Can Confront Injustice, Love Your Neighbor, and Bring Healing to the World.A Vision for Redemptive InvestingEventide's tagline—“Investing that makes the world rejoice”—is more than marketing. It's a biblical conviction inspired by Proverbs:“When the righteous prosper, the city rejoices, but when the wicked perish, there are shouts of joy.” – Proverbs 11:10Righteousness, in this context, refers to those who seek the good of others. The righteous prosper by looking out for the people in the city. But the wicked prosper through exploitation, especially of the poor. That leads to groaning, not rejoicing. For Eventide, investing is about more than avoiding harm. It's about actively investing in companies whose products and practices bring tangible good into the world—serving real needs, not exploiting vulnerabilities. Can You Do Good and Do Well?A common concern among faith-based investors is whether aligning values with investments means sacrificing returns.Romans 12 tells us “not to conform to the patterns of this world but be transformed by the renewing of our minds.” That means we should be willing to make sacrifices if necessary. But that doesn't mean underperformance.Research from the Biblically Responsible Investing Institute, drawing on a 19-year study, compares values-based screening (which excludes companies involved in activities such as abortion, pornography, and tobacco) with the S&P 500 and yields equivalent long-term returns. It's a myth that you must compromise performance to honor your faith. At Eventide, they don't just avoid the bad—we seek out the good. The Ultimate Question, as posed by Bain consultant Fred Reichheld, also found that the most successful companies are those that best serve their customers and employees. Serving people well is good business, and it often leads to long-term outperformance. Why How You Make Money MattersJohn Wesley once said, ‘Make all you can, give all you can, but make all you can without hurting yourself or your neighbor.”Proverbs 1:19 also warns against partnering with those who gain through unjust means. It's not just what we give—it's how we earn that matters to God. Ill-gotten gain is not pleasing to Him.Generosity isn't limited to charitable giving. A teacher choosing to serve children instead of pursuing a higher-paying career is living generously, even without writing a check. The Good InvestorRobin's passion is to see everyday Christians empowered to invest in ways that reflect their values. His upcoming book, The Good Investor: How Your Work Can Confront Injustice, Love Your Neighbor, and Bring Healing to the World, aims to help believers do just that. The Good Investor doesn't stop at money—it's also a book about purpose and calling. Don't assume your calling means you have to start something new. Many Christians are exactly where God needs them to be. The real challenge is to recognize your work as valuable to God and do it in a way that reflects His goodness.Psalm 1:3 emphasizes that the blessed life is rooted in delighting in God's Word and walking in His ways:“That person is like a tree planted by streams of water...whatever they do prospers.”Robin's new book, The Good Investor: How Your Work Can Confront Injustice, Love Your Neighbor, and Bring Healing to the World, will be released on July 22 and is available for pre-order now wherever books are sold. This is a must-read for any Christian who wants to rethink investing through the lens of God's Kingdom—and rediscover the purpose and power of their everyday financial decisions. On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I have a 401(k) from my old school district job with approximately $7,000-$8,000 in it. Unfortunately, most guys do this wrong. Especially young, ambitious men tend to fall into the "trap of perfection". That's why I've come up with a simple tool you can use to build your habits and build self respect much more effectively. How to Study the Bible
Do You Want to Be Well? The Ultimate Question for Spiritual Growth & Walking with God

How to Study the Bible

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 7, 2024 24:58

The ultimate question of spiritual growth is the question posed by Jesus—"Do you want to get well?” That is the ultimate question of our soul, the ultimate question of spiritual growth, of coming to know God, and of walking with God. This question, posed by Jesus to the invalid man in John 5, challenges us to reflect on our desires and motivations. It invites us to consider whether we truly seek transformation or if we are comfortable remaining in our current state, which may be marked by fear, control, and self-centeredness. Acknowledging our reality is a crucial step in this process. It requires us to confront the honest truth about ourselves, including our shortcomings, sins, and the ways we fall short of God's glory. Many people, especially in culturally Christian contexts, may use religious language without fully understanding its implications or the transformative power it holds. This disconnect can lead to a superficial faith that lacks depth and genuine connection with God. To truly desire wellness means recognizing our utter inability to change or fix ourselves without the presence of God and the transformative power of the Holy Spirit. It involves a willingness to turn away from the shadows of our fears and insecurities and step into the light of God's love. This light not only illuminates our path but also offers healing and restoration. This journey toward wellness is not about striving for perfection or trying to earn God's approval. Instead, it is about coming to Jesus, who offers life and freedom from condemnation. When we accept His invitation, we cross over from death to life, experiencing a profound transformation that reshapes our identity and purpose. Ultimately, the call to spiritual growth is an invitation to fully embrace the love of God. It encourages us to engage in a relationship with Christ that leads to a deeper understanding of His grace, mercy, and love. As we navigate this journey, we are reminded that the fruit of our relationship with Christ should be love—both for ourselves and for others. This love empowers us to live open-handedly, free from the burdens of regret and insecurity, and to move toward a life characterized by sacrificial love. The ultimate question of spiritual growth—whether we truly want to be well—challenges us to acknowledge our reality and our need for transformation through Christ. It invites us to step into the light of God's love, where true healing and wholeness await. Upcoming 42 AI podcast Graham and Arshiya announce the launch of a new podcast called 42ai 42ai will provide further insights and updates on how the platform is developing, its use cases and options for new clients. The "ultimate question to life, the universe and everything" that famously has the answer of 42 is the question posed in Douglas Adams' The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series. In the story, the supercomputer Deep Thought is tasked with finding the "Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything." After 7.5 million years of computation, Deep Thought reveals that the answer is 42. However, Deep Thought explains that the truly hard part was not finding the answer, but rather determining the actual question that 42 is the answer to. Deep Thought then creates an even more powerful computer called the Earth to find the real question. Unfortunately, the Earth is destroyed before it can unveil the question. So the "ultimate question" that corresponds to the answer of 42 is never definitively revealed in the Hitchhiker's Guide stories. It remains a mystery, with the implication that the true nature of the universe is so complex and enigmatic that it cannot be easily captured in a simple question. The lack of a clear question highlights the absurdity and humor in the idea of there being a single, ultimate answer to the mysteries of existence. Graham with the help of Meclabs is going to change all that. Watch this space for the "ultimate question" Clips from the Podcast What is MeclabsAI? This is the final episode of the "Wife Trilogy," a series that takes the highly familiar social role of the "wife" as its central focus. This topic encompasses our contemplations on the profound implications of being a wife. However, this podcast episode may well be one of the most significant we have recorded at this stage of our lives. It prompts us to reflect on how an individual with a fervent creative drive can possibly reconcile with the rigid social demands of that of a wife. In preparation, we collectively delved into three books exploring women's creative pursuits: "Wifedom," chronicling the story of Eileen, the wife of George Orwell; "The Marriage Question," illuminating the private life of novelist George Eliot; and "Monsters: A Fan's Dilemma," examining the notion of the "monstrous female artist." Many great male artists have benefited from the silent sacrifices of their wives, while women, upon becoming mothers, often find their creative energies drained and mental space constricted. By observing the lives and creative trajectories of women authors such as Ursula Le Guin, among others, we interrogate the notion of the "great mother." Can a good mother just "leave" to pursue her artistic endeavors? Under the capitalist system of efficiency, a mother's contributions are taken for granted, their value stripped away. Should we not re-evaluate and reappraise the worth of maternal labor and how it is actually a fiercely and terrifyingly intellectual pursuit? 06:50 Wifedom: Story of Eileen O‘Shaughnessy, how she created the conditions for George Orwell's writing while her own talents were buried 19:00 The Marriage Question: How George Eliot challenged societal traditions but also struggled to conform to society's expectations of a wife 30:50 Monsters: A Fan's Dilemma: The greatest crime of female artists is neglecting her children 39:00 Is balancing motherhood and creative work impossible? 51:30 Ursula Le Guin: Reexamining the meaning of homemaking and childrearing, which are among humanity's oldest and most important labors 【拓展链接 The Links】 Wifedom: Mrs. Orwell's Invisible Life The Marriage Question Monsters: A Fan's Dilemma Biography of X The Creative Act: A Way of Being Ursula Le Guinn: Words Are My Matter 【疲惫红书 CyberRed】 除了播客以外,疲惫娇娃的几个女的在小红书上开了官方账号,我们会不定期发布【疲惫在读】、【疲惫在看】、【疲惫旅行】、【疲惫Vlog】等等更加轻盈、好玩、实验性质的内容。如果你想知道除了播客以外我们在关注什么,快来小红书评论区和我们互动。 Apart from the podcast, we have set up an official account on Xiaohongshu. I hear the pain in my coaching client's words when they say, “I feel like God is punishing me.” Many of the women who go through my programs and coaching one-to-one have been taught a view of God that is vengeful, full of wrath, and all punishment. They fear that when they don't do something perfect God will punish them for it. If our theology of God isn't based on His goodness, then when things happen that we didn't expect or plan for, it's easy to think God is punishing us. But God doesn't bring punishment; he does, however, discipline us. In this episode, I walk through what I've learned about the differences between punishment and discipline. God will prune the parts of our lives that do not bear fruit if we allow Him to. Do you often view God as a punisher? Do you have a healthy view of discipline? Let's talk about it. What do you do when you're 5 years into a Ph.D. program in a field you know is not meant for you?In this episode, I talk to Career & Confidence Coach, Ken Li, who spent his formative years being groomed for a life in the sciences. From math camps in the summers to undergrad at Cornell University where he received degrees in chemistry and biochemistry, his relentless pursuit of academic achievement resulted in crippling depression that ultimately led him to drop out of his biochemistry Ph.D. program during his fifth and final year because he realized science wasn't a fit. After taking a career aptitude test, Ken pivoted to public relations where he excelled the next 20 years.Though outwardly successful, Ken was in inner turmoil. Desperate to prove himself after dropping out of his Ph.D. program, he spent his time in PR, in the words of Brené Brown, "hustling for his worthiness."It wasn't until he happened to meet a life coach in his 40s that he realized what he wanted most in life was to follow a path that felt true to him.In 2020, Ken became a certified life coach with The Life Coach School. His mission? To help those with similar stories get to the place where they feel safe to truly decide their next steps in life.If you've ever felt you were following someone else's path, not your own; if you've ever felt the crippling effects of impostor syndrome and depression; if you've ever questioned your worthiness or wondered if it was okay to want something different, join Ken and I for this vulnerable, candid conversation about the pain of perfectionism and the incredible consequences of living in fear of other people's opinions -- until you realize the approval you've been longing for all along is your own. ---Ken LiCareer & Confidence CoachWebsite: https://donthatethejob.com/Email: kenli@donthatethejob.com---Cited in this episode / Recommended:Medium Article | Before You Blame Your Job, Do This First: Wash Your Dirty Windows by Ken Li https://medium.com/all-things-work/before-you-blame-your-job-do-this-first-d9cd881dc4d9?sk=1cbe51c5205fdb30147b3af2abda7814- Being Happy: A Guide to Greater Confidence & Security by Andrew Matthews - What Should I Do With My Life? The statistics show that skepticism, atheism, and agnosticism are on the rise among American adults today, along with hostility towards the Christian faith. But what if these current statistics aren't telling the whole story? Could it be that people are just as curious about God today as they've always been? It's the final podcast episode of 2023 and we're going out with a bang! This week, Frank talks with the one and only Lee Strobel about his brand-new book, 'Is God Real: Exploring the Ultimate Question of Life.' Aiming to answer today's biggest objections to God's existence (the problem of evil and divine hiddenness), Lee uses his latest book to unpack some of the best philosophical, scientific, and historical evidence for God. During their conversation, Frank and Lee will answer questions like: What makes this book unique in comparison to Lee's previous work? How has the attitude towards atheism evolved in recent decades? Why doesn't God make His existence more obvious? Which top scholars did Lee interview for the book? Why is faith in God (seemingly) on the decline in America? Which argument for God is most difficult for atheists to counter? What is the Apologetics Pyramid and how do you use it as a tool for evangelism?   As you'll hear during the episode, not a second goes by without someone (about 200 someones to be exact!) Googling the question: "Is God Real?" which leads to a digital tidal wave of information that generates more confusion than answers. On the contrary, Lee's book is an easy, yet compelling and logical explanation that pulls the apologetic cookies from the top shelf to the bottom shelf for anyone open and interested in learning more about the evidence we have for God's existence. And for those who want to go even further in their studies, consider enrolling in the Lee Strobel Center for Evangelism and Applied Apologetics at Colorado Christian University! 200 times per second, someone searches online to find the answer to the question, “Is God real?”  Atheist journalist-turned-Christian apologist Lee Strobel is here to talk with me about that crazy statistic (200 times per second?!), the answer to that big question, and the opportunity we have as believers.  Called “one of the evangelical community's most popular apologists” by the Washington Post, Lee is the New York Times bestselling author of more than forty books. Lee and his wife, Leslie, have two adult children and live in Houston.  In his newest book, Is God Real?: Exploring the Ultimate Question of Life, Lee gives a rational exploration of the proof of God's existence.  Lean in and listen as Lee and I discuss:  What Lee found surprising in his research for this book Two big objections people have to God's existence (and the reasoned answers we find in research to those) How we can better understand the hiddenness of God Encouraging trends among sometimes-discouraging statistics around faith  Favorite quotes: “I am finding that physics, cosmology, the origin of the universe, and even genetics is putting powerfully towards the truth of scripture.” “Sometimes we think we are open to encountering or investigating God when in reality we hold back.” “God he has to walk a fine line. He has to make himself apparent so that we can find him if we seek him but also he has to remain hidden to some degree otherwise he overwhelms us and it takes away our free choice.” “We need to be ready to give an answer to anyone that asks about the hope we have.” “Our children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren are going to be challenged on their faith in a way that other generations have not been and so we need to prepare ourselves so we can help prepare them to be able to know not just what we believe but why we believe it.” Coaching this week:  Secret for Not Having to Rely on Self Discipline  (27:13) Links to great things we discussed:  Lee Strobel Website Lee Strobel Instagram Lee Strobel Twitter Strobel Center Is God Real?: Exploring the Ultimate Question of Life Gloria - The Shadows of Knight A Case for Christ Sacred Rest: Recover Your Life, Renew Your Energy, Restore Your Sanity Only Murders in the Building I Thank God - JWLKRS Worship feat.
