Star Wars Andor: How Fascism Creates Its Own SupportersWhat drives someone to become complicit in fascism? We explore Syril Karn's arc in Star Wars: Andor and what it reveals about how authoritarian systems manipulate their supporters. How does fascism differ from authoritarianism? We examined the central leader cult of personality that defines fascist systems, with Emperor Palpatine as the prime example. What makes Syril believe in "law and order"? His rigid worldview and imperial propaganda blind him to corruption, driving his obsession with Cassian Andor and participation in the Gorman massacre. Why do fascist systems encourage infighting? The Empire deliberately pits officials against each other to prevent anyone from challenging the Emperor's power. Can we sympathize with villains without excusing them? We discussed humanizing Imperial characters while holding them accountable for their violent choices.Other Topics Covered:Syril's parallel to Javert from Les MisérablesHow the Rebellion operates differently than the EmpireThe Emperor's invisible but constant presence in Imperial decisionsWhy redemption arcs should be rare for fascist collaboratorsViolence as the true governing principle under authoritarianismUnderstanding characters like Syril isn't about excusing fascism—it's about recognizing how ordinary people can be drawn into extraordinary evil and the importance of making moral choices when systems encourage us to look away. **************************************************************************This episode is a production of Superhero Ethics, a The Ethical Panda Podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network. We also hear about his success as a solo artist, his collaborations with Alfie Boe, and his ventures into songwriting.

What do you get when you mix Broadway royalty with sci-fi cloning, environmental theater, and a dash of boogie-woogie piano? A wildly entertaining conversation with the legendary Terrence Mann. From his earliest days growing up in a musical household to helping launch the North Carolina Theatre, Terry's journey is packed with passion, persistence, and a whole lot of timing. He shares the story behind how he actually got cast in Cats (it involves London and a royal connection), and how he practically willed his way into Les Misérables after being told multiple times they didn't want to see him. His advice for young performers? “Have no fear, there are no wrong choices, and be specific”—words he lives by and teaches. Now back on stage in Broadway's The Great Gatsby as Meyer Wolfsheim, Terrence opens up about what it feels like to return to the theater after years in “Foundation land,” filming Apple TV's epic sci-fi series. We also dive into his work as a director, educator, and his longtime love for North Carolina's historic Lost Colony production. And yes, we play a game of Plot in 60 Seconds, get a surprise cameo from iOS balloons, and bond over the beautiful chaos of 1980s New York auditions. This episode is packed with decades of wisdom and a whole lot of heart. Terrence Mann is a three-time Tony nominee best known for originating iconic roles such as Rum Tum Tugger in Cats, Javert in Les Misérables, and the Beast in Beauty and the Beast. His Broadway credits also include Pippin, Tuck Everlasting, The Addams Family, Scarlet Pimpernel, and Rags. On screen, he's appeared in Sense8, all four Critters films, and currently stars as Brother Dusk in the Apple TV+ sci-fi series Foundation. He's also an accomplished director, educator, and co-founder of Triple Arts, a musical theater training program. Please join Kate and Sheila as they discuss parts 2 & 3 of Victor Hugo's unforgettable tale of woe, Les Misérables. Today we meet the young girl, Cosette, who was left with the cruel innkeepers. The Thenardiers have taken money from Cosette's young mother under false pretenses. They make Cosette work tirelessly, and use money sent from her mother for themselves. Jean Valjean is at last free to rescue Fantine's daughter as he promised. Cosette was a “fly trembling in a spider's web”. The Bible tells us in Exodus 22:23, “Do not take advantage of the widow or the fatherless. If you do, they will cry out to Me, I will certainly hear their cry.” Cosette does just that, after her prayer the paths of Jean Valjean and Cosette meet and the poor waif is removed from the sinister selfish family at last!“The bishop had taught him (Jean Valjean) the meaning of virtue; Cosette had now taught him the meaning of love.” Life was briefly sweet for the pair, as a devoted grandfather with his grateful granddaughter, until the detective, Javert, relentlessly tracked them down. Danger popped their new found joy like a pin in a balloon. How will they escape this unmerciful fame-seeking man? Next, we meet Marius, whose grandfather raised him until he disinherited him. “The rigors of his present life gratified and pleased him.” Time has passed and the despicable Thenardiers end up as Marius' next door neighbors. The showdown between the grafters along with their thugs-for-hire, kind-hearted Jean Valjean, and the unstoppable detective is viewed by an anything but calm Marius through a peephole in the wall connecting the rooms! Hugo challenges his readers, of yesterday and today, by addressing topics that many would   rather sweep under the rug than be exposed for all to see. Are you ready to jump into the fray?

If there was a huge asteroid hurtling toward Earth threatening to destroy life as we know it and you could see one more show before you die, what would it be? It can be anything you want - a show you've seen before, one that you wish you'd seen, or something you've made up entirely. What would be YOUR Last Show on Earth? This is the podcast in which we ask a special guest the big, BIG question that nobody ever needed (or indeed) bothered to ask. Our guest this episode is Philip QuastTo theatre fans, Philip Quast needs no introduction, but here's one anyway. He is a multi award winning and hugely influential hero to many musical actors – ourselves included – and has graced stage and screen for nearly 5 decades. During this time he has won Mo Awards, Helpmann Awards, three Olivier Awards and was appointed Member of the Order of Australia in 2022 for significant services to the arts. Most musical fans first heard of him when he played Javert in the 10th Anniversary concert and ever since then, seeing his name on a cast list is enough to make any theatre fan go weak at the knees!Links:Wikihttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philip_QuastGuardian interviewhttps://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/article/2024/aug/10/cost-of-living-sydney-theatre-company-philip-quast-interviewJavert at the 10thhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=urxk4mveLCwSunday in the Park with George documentary 1990https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=av4M2Gzy4W0Pretty Women with Bryn terfelhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJjQo_YbFsETomorrow and Tomorrow speech analysis with McKellen and Nunnhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zGbZCgHQ9m8Hosted by John Owen-Jones and Alistair BrammerMusic written by John Owen-Jones and Alistair BrammerMusic performed by John Owen-Jones, Alistair Brammer and John QuirkRecorded & edited by John Owen-Jones and Alistair BrammerA 2024 John Owen-Jones Associates Productionwww.johnowenjones.com/podcast Hosted on Acast. The Gospel of Musical Theatre

Who gets to tell the story? It's the season finale, and it feels like a perfect time to travel back to 2015, when a blockbuster hip-hop musical about America's founders took the world by storm. That's right... Today, Peter and Nathan return to the room where it happened and consider the theology of Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton. _________________________________________ You'll hear: My Shot / Wait For It / The Ten Dual Commandments: Hamilton & Burr—like Valjean & Javert, like Jesus & Judas—represent oppositional forces, responding to similar circumstances with radically different approaches to life. They also each get a great “I Want” song. Burn / Quiet Uptown / Say No To This: Eliza Schuyler Hamilton, Maria Reynolds, Angelica Schuyler Church and the various roles that women play in this story. What does forgiveness look like – and what does Eliza see at the end of the musical? One Last Time / Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story: Few other musicals are so associated with presidential administrations as Hamilton is with Barack Obama. We think about the connections between the Hamilton project and the Obama project, wonder about the soft nationalism at the heart of this story, and think critically about the legacy of George Washington. Who gets to tell the story? You'll hear Lin-Manuel Miranda, Leslie Odom Jr, Phillipa Soo, Renee Elise Goldsberry, Christopher Jackson and the cast of the 2015 Original Broadway Cast Album. It won a Grammy. _________________________________________ Check out some of our all-time favorites! Phantom of the Opera Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat Jesus Christ Superstar! Somewhere beyond the barricade, is there a world you long to see? There's no more overtly theological (or more popular) musical than Claude-Michel Schönberg & Alain Boubil's 1980 Les Misérables, based on Victor Hugo's 1862 novel. From Valjean and Javert to Eponine and Fantine, this musical crams more pathos, prayer, and bad wigs into three hours than any other musical we know. Do you hear the people sing? _________________________________________ We talk about: Prologue (the Bishop) / Stars / Javert's Suicide – Javert, the police inspector, embodies a law-and-order version of the Christian gospel (shout-out to our Jansenist followers!) – and ultimately, the mercy he is shown destroys him. Are these competing atonement theories, or is there more subtlety in Les Mis' treatment of the Christian gospel and its consequences? I Dreamed a Dream / On My Own / A Little Fall of Rain – Fantine gets one, brief, shining moment before she dies (it's a weeper), and Eponine stands in for every alto who dreams of being the soprano – and then she dies, too. Why do most of the women in Les Mis end up dead? Turning, Turning – "What's the use of praying if there's nobody who hears it?" In a musical where women are mostly prostitutes or virgins, the women's chorus gives voice to one of the show's darkest and most provocative theological questions. Bring Him Home / Do You Hear the People Sing? – What does an evangelized life look like on the ground – and what does “somewhere beyond the barricade” really mean? _________________________________________ You'll hear Colm Wilkinson, Phillip Quast, Lea Salonga, Michael Ball and Judy Kuhn from the 1995 “Dream Cast Recording.” You'll also hear Anne Hathaway sing “I Dreamed a Dream” from the 2012 film soundtrack because she won an Oscar for it, and attention must be paid. _________________________________________ Never miss an episode! Sign up for our email list to get updates when new episodes are released, info about upcoming special events, and more. _________________________________________ Check out some of our all-time favorites! Les Miserables is one of those profound stories that somehow encompasses the full depth of human experience. We have birth, death, falling in love, disappointment, justice, despair, young revolutionary zeal, forgiveness, and heavenly hope. From Valjean's first encounter with the Bishop - who forgives him, undeservedly so - to Valjean's own forgiveness of Javert (and Javert's inability to accept his mercy) - this a story of love offered, received, and sometimes (tragically) rejected. It is a story that promises the often miserable human condition always has the hope of redemption, if not in this life, “somewhere beyond the barricade.” Today on the podcast I am joined by The Lord of the Rings and Catholicism, was published in December 2023 with En Route Books and Media. Today's show is a full recap of yesterday's IRS whistleblower sworn testimony before the House Judiciary Committee. While the Republicans seemed focused on getting facts out to the American people, the Democrats were doing all they could to avoid any relevant topics and to throw shade. The only Democrat who stepped in it was Rep. Dan Goldman (D-NY) who blew it so badly, even Jonathan Turley wrote a piece about it. To start, we look at some of the comments from Democrats in the Committee. Rep. Kweisi Mfume (D-MD) seems to believe we are something other than a Constitutional Republic. In his mind, the DOJ, the FBI and the IRS are there to help keep us all in-line. Not sure what form of government he think we are, but that's not it. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wanted to focus on climate change, the gun debate and equity. The one thing she did mention in which I am in total agreement is in getting US Attorney David Weiss in front of the Committee. Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) played cute and tried to make it look as those the IRS whistleblowers represented the overzealous Javert, who persecuted the poor, innocent Jean Valjean, when he evoked Les Miserables. In his mind, Hunter Biden is being needlessly persecuted by over-the-top IRS agents. But, the devastating moment came from Rep. Dan Goldman (D-NY) who tried to be cute and make it look like Joe Biden didn't know about his son's business dealings with CEFC China Energy. Instead, he ended up implicating Joe Biden as being keenly aware of his son's business dealings – something Joe has denied since before the election. So much for that line of defense moving forward. Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) did get to another point of how Hunter claimed a hotel room expense for his dad as a business expense. So, either Hunter lied on his taxes and tried to claim a business deduction that wasn't true. Or, he was telling the truth and Joe Biden was involved in yet another business dealing with Hunter. Either way, it's bad. Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) decimated the coordinated effort by Democrats to co-opt the two-tiered system narrative. While Democrats bemoaned the inequity of IRS audits happening to more black and brown people, Luna pointed out that those same Democrats were bending over backwards protecting a privileged white man! Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) reminds us the investigation did not start with Hunter Biden. However, now that it has moved to him, there is over $17 million dollars of known transactions that have flowed from Ukraine, China and Romania into the Biden Crime Family. Finally, in a beautiful exchange between Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) and IRS Agent Gary Shapley that as soon as “Main Justice” was contacted, the entire investigation came to a grinding halt. Jordan also suggested the need to get AG Garland, US Attorney Weiss and other top Justice officials before the Committee to help explain the shift in the investigation. As Senator John Kennedy (R-LA) states, for Garland, it's like he's flushed the toilet and the water is suddenly rising. He's got a serious problem on his hands. As a psychologist, I'm often asked the question as to whether people can change. And since people are always in a constant state of change, I take this question to mean: "is radical personality transformation possible?" And my answer is: yes! However, it is typically only possible once people hit bottom. In today's episode, I make the case that my favorite musical, "Les Miserables," is actually a protracted examination of this question. Is Valjean's transformation legitimate, or will he forever be Javert's escaped convict, 24601? Let's take a look. Today on the show... Art criticism! Pizza! Organized crime! Crap! And special guest stars Bob Raymonda and Jack Marone, co-creators of the Forgive Me! podcast! In today's first bad idea, Gabriel brings us the story of a ballet director who took a rather... unorthodox approach to expressing his displeasure at a critic's evaluation of his work. The gang makes it into a film that gives a whole new meaning to the phrase, "giving someone shit." Then, Sarah brings us the story of a mafia boss who foolishly did some press to raise his profile. The squad takes this material and runs with it all the way to a movie about a man who dared to dream about pizza glory despite his criminal upbringing.  All of that, plus: Javert characters, traveling plumbers, mirthful smiles, copycat critics, and the thrill of the spotlight!  Today's Bad Ideas™:Idea #1Idea #2 For more of Bob and Jack's work, check out the Forgive Me! podcast. Support the show: http://patreon.com/NoBadIdeasSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
