When Samuel was a young man serving under Eli in the LORD's house, the LORD's Word rarely came as it had to Moses and Joshua. Yet the LORD was bringing about an increase in His Word through Samuel. He made Samuel, Eli, and all Israel certain of His call to Samuel as a prophet, even though it took some time for Eli and Samuel to catch on. Samuel's prayer in response to the LORD's call is one that all Christians do well to repeat, asking the LORD to speak and promising to listen. The LORD revealed to Samuel what He had previously told Eli concerning the coming judgment of Eli's house, and Eli received it faithfully. This was the beginning of Samuel's ministry as a prophet in Israel. Rev. Sean Kilgo, pastor at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Lawrence, KS, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study 1 Samuel 3:1-21. "A Kingdom Unlike All the Nations” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through 1-2 Samuel. This time in Israel's history has its highs and lows, but the LORD's faithfulness never wavers. He provides His Word to be proclaimed faithfully through prophets like Samuel and Nathan. Even as princes like Saul and David sit on an earthly throne, the LORD remains King over His people, even as He does now and forever through the Lord Jesus Christ. Sharper Iron, hosted by Rev. Timothy Appel, looks at the text of Holy Scripture both in its broad context and its narrow detail, all for the sake of proclaiming Christ crucified and risen for sinners. Two pastors engage with God's Word to sharpen not only their own faith and knowledge, but the faith and knowledge of all who listen. Submit comments or questions to: listener@kfuo.org
Samuel's prophetic ministry began with hearing and sharing God's Word.
In today's episode, Rhonda and Lori challenge us to pray a powerful prayer: Speak, Lord, your servant is listening.
Beginnings In Prayer - Part 4: Listening to God Because He Desires to Speak to Us MESSAGE SUMMARY: Prayer is: 1) spending time with God – acknowledging God's presence in all our lives' activities; and 2) conversation with God – listening to and talking with God. Prayer reflects on our relationship with God. Why don't we pray. The Apostle James, in James 4:2-3, provides a perspective regarding Prayer Life: “You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions." In praying, we should know the difference between prayers of "petition" (praying for one's own needs) and prayers of "intercession" (praying for the needs of others). God wants prayers of "petition" from us -- all our needs and concerns should be brought to Him in prayer because He loves and cares for us. However, God want us to, also, focus on others and their needs (intercession) -- physical and spiritual. "Intercessory prayer” is fundamental to deepening our prayer life and our personal relationship with God. We need to consider "how we listen" to and for God. Usually, God speaks through the Holy Spirit like He spoke to Mary. Jesus tells us about the Holy Spirit and “listening” through the Apostle John in John 16:13-15: “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.". God, mostly but not always, uses that "still small voice" in our minds. We need to seek out places and times so that we can listen for and to God. Listening validates relationships in our secular lives -- why would it be different in our relationship with God? God wants to speak to us because we have a relationship with Him -- He loves us and wants to be with us. God's "Counselor", the Holy Spirit, is His primary communication bridge to us. God speaks to us, through the Holy Spirit, as He promised. God guides us to all truth -- to His direction for our lives. When God speaks to you, write it down, as God tells us through the prophet Habakkuk in Habakkuk 2:2-3: “And the LORD answered me: ‘Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so he may run who reads it. For still the vision awaits its appointed time; it hastens to the end — it will not lie. If it seems slow, wait for it; it will surely come; it will not delay.'". God, often, speaks to us through the Bible, through other people, and through our circumstances. As we listen for God, we need to respond to God as Samuel did in Samuel 3:10b: "Speak Lord, for your servant is listening.". Pray specific prayers, in the Holy Spirit and in Scripture, for ourselves and for others -- be persistent. TODAY'S PRAYER: Keeping the Sabbath, Lord, will require a lot of changes in the way I am living life. Teach me, Lord, how to take the next step with this in a way that fits my unique personality and situation. Help me to trust you with all that will remain unfinished and to enjoy my humble place in your very large world. In Jesus' name, amen. Scazzero, Peter. Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Day by Day (p. 129). Zondervan. Kindle Edition. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: I affirm that because of what God has done for me in His Son, Jesus, I AM A CHILD OF GOD. Yet to all who received Him, to those who believed in His Name, He gave the right to become children of God-- children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God. In a world full of noise and distractions, are you making space to hear God? This year, Covenant is committing to a theme of seeking God's presence, learning to listen for His voice above all else. In this powerful sermon, we explore the importance of silence and solitude in drawing closer to Him. Through a personal story about the beauty of snow and the overwhelming quiet it brings, we're reminded how easily noise can drown out God's voice. Looking at the story of Samuel, we see how even when God speaks, we may not always recognize His voice. The challenge for the church is to be intentional—limiting technology, taking silent walks, reading Scripture aloud, fasting, and practicing listening prayer. When we create space, God fills it. What is He saying to you? Will you listen and obey? Join us on this journey and make space for God's presence this year. Watch now!

Last week I shared about visions to you. While I would not say visions are an often occurrence for me, they are always a blessing to receive and do their part to reveal something to me that God is trying to communicate. In the passage of 1 Samuel, we see the biblical precedent for God speaking outside of the written word to people to directly connect with his spiritual children. At a young age the future prophet Samuel was called by God in a manner which seemed audible to him. We must keep our ears listening and not shut out what God is trying to say to us.
Greetings, Leaders. God orchestrates extraordinary events in His infinite wisdom and power to capture our attention, revealing His presence in ways surpassing our wildest imagination. He generously rewards those who earnestly seek Him. God delights in our desire to cultivate a deep, personal relationship with Him. Early in my career, I busied myself with career goals. I mistakenly thought that my career was everything and life was the outcome. Then, I began to notice God speaking to me through unusual circumstances. Every day, I began seeking God and asking for His guidance and help. I studied Scriptures that spoke to every circumstance I faced in my life and career. As many do, I was focusing on my finances. Financial debt was an enemy that was overwhelming me. I began to ask God to show me what to do. He did! I began practicing giving financially to the LORD's work, including my local church, missions, people, and initiatives, as He directed. "Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back." Jesus - Luke 6:38 NLT I began experiencing what I recall as "Divine Encounters on my Life and Career Journey." My "Divine Encounter" occurs on a sunny, breezy day in Clearwater Beach, Florida. My wife and I are walking along the ocean's shore; the waves come in and out, the breeze, the seagulls, and the smell and sounds are fantastic! We are holding hands, walking on the seashore. A gust of wind blows my straw hat into the ocean. Inside the straw hat is a $20 bill that I stuck inside, intending to buy my wife refreshments at the end of our walk. I waded into the ocean and retrieved my hat. The $20 bill was gone—the wind and the sea had taken it! We continued to walk down the beach, trying to reshape my sea-drenched hat in my hand, and suddenly, five minutes later, the $20 bill washed ashore in front of my feet! I say to my wife; the LORD is speaking to us and say, "Speak Lord, Your servants are listening!" I heard, "I will rebuke the devourer for your sake!" This Scripture was a promise God gave me months earlier regarding our finances. "Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse. And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, so that he will not destroy the fruit of your ground, nor shall the vine fail to bear fruit for you in the field," Says the LORD of hosts." Malachi 3:10-12 God is faithful to all His promises. Our response is to believe, obey, and rely on Him for everything. I pray that this account of the faithfulness of God to keep all His promises will encourage you as it has for me to seek His guidance and instruction for everything in life and career. According to His power in us, He can do exceedingly abundantly more than all we can ask or imagine. Victory!

Grace and peace to youAs we continue on with Season 15 , God is wanting us to learn to better hear His voice. Today we discuss ways that God speaks to us, and more importantly, how we respond to His voice with swift obedience. 128. Speak Lord, I am Ready to Listen - We want the Lord to speak to us, we are ready to hear. There are those times when we can't hear a peep. What stops us from hearing from God? Are we too distracted, too busy, or anticipating how we think we will hear from Him? Maybe we need to create margin - blank space - that is reserved from Him. Maybe we need to sit in the quiet so we can hear Him whisper. Maybe we need to silence the enemy or turn down the world's volume, so we can hear what the Lord has to say. What is our posture? Obedience, correct posture, and purposeful silence sets us up to hear the Lord's voice. The more time we spend in His presence, the more often we will hear from Him. It may be in a song, in a phrase, in a sermon, in a conversation with a friend and then repeated in our devotion. So what are we to do? Get in the Word so we can know the Word and can discern truth from the lies of the enemy. Once we hear from Him, we have to be ready to adjust our life and walk in obedience with Him. He never calls us to do what we can accomplish in and of ourselves. This is how He gets the glory. We hear from God through communion, relationship, counsel and conviction. Believe He has something to say to you and expect to hear from Him. Rely on the Holy Spirit to be your helper and your teacher. Pray His Word and hear from Him.
