SFMF has been looking forward to Part II of this Episode - Depression, Anxiety and The Other Shit We Don’t Want To Talk About – for quite some time. And also my good friend Tolton Pace, Public Health Professional and Youth Pastor at Impact Church in East Point, GA. I also thought it important to add Dr. Bridget in on the conversation as we explore the dynamics of mental health between men and women and the potential emotional impact on relationships.

Today I have the distinct honor and privilege of sharing today’s Episode, The Turning Point with Dr. Andrew Sun, a Fellowship trained Urologist who specializes in Men’s Health. Also the Doctor responsible for identifying my father’s cancer diagnosis, and in a real sense, helping to extend his life. After learning of my father’s diagnosis, it pushed me to begin thinking more strategically about my own health, and the health of so many other men, particularly Black Men that tends to go – unfortunately - underserved in the medical community. I guess you can consider this as a Public Service Announcement, about the State of Black Men’s Health. Thank you for stopping by Stories From My Father The Podcast, and enjoy the show - Let’s Talk About It!!!

Happy Easter everyone, welcome to another episode of Stories From My Father The Podcast, where real and candid conversations occur about everyday matters of the heart. I’m your host Michael Terrell. I’m super excited about today’s Episode: Who’s Ladder Are You Holding. I’m excited because today I am joined by two guests – who are close friends of mine – M.J. Blakely, Attorney at Pope McGlamry. And also my good friend Kelvin Davis, Vice President at Warner Media. I’m further excited because today is Easter, and I have the wonderful opportunity of sharing this Episode with two brothers who I have the utmost respect for; and who are thriving in both life, and their professional careers. Today we are discussing Who’s Ladder Are You Holding – where we are talking about a wide range of topics pertaining to career; family and relationships; the value of friendships; wins and losses; personal growth; and what contributed to their success. I am affectionately labeling this episode as the Take Over – because with these two – nothing is off limits.

On today's episode of Stories From My Father The Podcast we are having a very candid conversation about Depression, Anxiety and The Other Shit We Don’t Want To Talk About. I am joined by two guest - Dr. Greg Ellison, Founder of Fearless Dialogues & Associated Professor of Candler School of Theology at Emory University. And Author of the Book Cut Dead, But Still Alive. And also my good friend Tolton Pace, Public Health Professional and dynamic Youth Pastor at Impact Church in East Point, GA. The show is centered around a topic that is very dear to our hearts – Mental Health, particular as it pertains to Black Men. There is so much stigma attached to this subject – Mental Health – specifically as it relates to Black Men – that I felt it important to have a real and candid conversation in effort to destigmatize – to remove the shame and disgrace from men who is challenged with mental health; and have what my brother Greg would call a Fearless Dialogue about this pandemic affecting Black Men.

During this Episode Jump School, we will engage in a lively conversation about the years my father served in the United States Army at Fort Campbell, KY – and being selected to be a part of this elite Unit called The 101st Airborne Division – also known as the Screaming Eagles. YES, in the event you are wondering, my father was a bit of a badass who was a part of this special air assault operation in the US Army. Joined by guests Ronald Terrell and Dawnielle Hawley, we will explore the complexities of a black man being a part of this elite Unit of the Army in the 60s, and the challenges my father had to overcome at succeeding in Jump School and earning his coveted Jump Wings. Furthermore, we will engage in an unhinged conversation about this experience and how my father used the lessons learned to navigate through the jumps of life.

Let's talk about storms. Have you ever encountered a storm so severe that it caused you to pull over on the side of the road? If you are thinking that I am referring to a weather related storm such as a thunderstorm, flood or snowstorm, I am certain that the answer to this question is yes. But what if the storm that I am referring to is not a weather related storm, but a life storm such as a divorce, health issue, crisis in your family or a financial storm? Storms are a part of our everyday lives. Truth be told, we have all experienced them at some point. But here's the question, how do you respond when you find yourself in a storm? Do you pull over on the side of the road? Or do you continue moving forward until the storm passes over? I believe in life you are either heading into a storm; going through a storm; or coming out of a storm – storms are unavoidable. In this episode, we will explore this very question - How to respond when you find yourself facing a storm?

    Returning Home

Returning Home is about reclaiming your rightful place in the Universe. Did you know that you were a shareholder in the Universe? It’s yours! It literally has your name on it! It’s your real estate. You own the deed. You can build and create the life that you desire. Why do we at times live our lives aimlessly? Why are you turning over the keys of your future to someone who is not assigned to go with you into your destiny? It is imperative to our very existence, that we reclaim our rightful ownership in the Universe. Returning Home is less about a physical destination; but more so about a place of a spiritual restoration? A place where you can experience your greatest healing. I think sometimes we must return to those places where we experienced our greatest pain, in order to discover our greatest joy! Returning Home, is sometimes returning to the origins of where your pain began. It is also the place where your healing can take place. Isn’t that fascinating? That our healing can start at the very place of where our pain began? You cannot be afraid to go to that place and feel the pain all over again. It will not be easy or short lived for that matter. It must take, as long as it takes, there is no escape hatch. My dad once said, “You can do anything for a period of time.” The important thing is to protect your physical, mental and emotional health as you go through this healing process. So, I guess we can say, Stories From My Father was birthed from a place of joy and pain. And Returning Home is a chance where healing and restoration can take place. Only if we are truthful with ourselves; and open to taking the path that may require the most resistance.
