Here’s what his leverage and the market’s concentration in seven stocks have to do with your retirement account. Two years ago, he wrote a 165-page essay predicting the future of artificial intelligence with such confidence that Silicon Valley treated it like scripture. This week, his fund — built on borrowed money layered on top of a handful of AI stocks — got forced into a fire sale to Ken Griffin’s Citadel at a steep discount. It’s a dramatic story. But here’s the direct answer to the question that actually matters for your retirement: if most of your money sits in a plain S&P 500 index fund, you may be more concentrated in a handful of the same stocks than you realize — and that concentration, not any single hedge fund’s collapse, is the real thing worth understanding before your next portfolio review. You don’t need borrowed money or a 165-page manifesto to be exposed to this. You just need to own “the market” and assume that means you’re spread across 500 different companies. Aschenbrenner’s fund, Situational Awareness, reportedly grew from roughly $200 million to as much as $45 billion in under two years, largely on concentrated bets in AI infrastructure names. Then, using leverage reported as high as 400% — meaning roughly four borrowed dollars for every dollar of the fund’s own capital — a sharp pullback in a handful of semiconductor and AI stocks triggered margin calls his prime brokers couldn’t ignore. That’s the mechanical part, and it’s worth understanding in plain English: when you borrow against an investment and that investment drops in value, your loan doesn’t shrink with it. At some point the lender requires more collateral — a margin call — and if you can’t provide it, your shares get sold for you, often at the worst possible moment. There’s no easy way around that math. It requires diligence, not confidence. Most retirees reading this aren’t using 400% leverage. But there’s a quieter version of the same concentration problem sitting inside a lot of 401(k)s and IRA rollovers, and it doesn’t require a single dollar of borrowed money to hurt you. What the Numbers Actually Show According to CNBC’s reporting on the collapse, Aschenbrenner’s fund held roughly $45 billion in assets at its peak, before margin calls forced the sale of its leveraged public stock positions — including major holdings like SK Hynix and CoreWeave — to Citadel at a discount, with the fund’s overall assets falling to around $10 billion within about 30 trading days (CNBC). That’s an interesting argument, and reasonable people disagree about it — Microsoft’s stock jumped double digits on one earnings report this year, while Oracle’s bonds have drawn scrutiny over its own AI-related spending. But that debate is largely beside the point for a retiree building income for the next 40 or 50 years. The actual lesson isn’t “buy AI stocks” or “avoid AI stocks.” It’s that when a market’s returns get concentrated in a small number of companies, your risk gets concentrated right along with it — whether you meant it to or not. That’s exactly why our approach starts with cash flow analysis, not headlines: dividend-paying companies across sectors like insurance, telecommunications, and financials keep generating income whether or not seven technology companies are having a good month. You get paid to wait, in good markets and choppy ones, instead of hoping a narrow slice of the market keeps carrying the whole index. What This Looks Like in Practice We build separately managed accounts around companies with a history of paying and growing their dividends, purchased when they’re out of favor and less expensive — not around chasing whichever seven stocks are dominating the headlines that quarter. Bonds play a role too: current income, lower volatility, and dry powder to buy good companies when the market temporarily marks them down for reasons that have nothing to do with their underlying business. None of this means avoiding growth, and it doesn’t mean the S&P 500’s biggest companies are bad businesses — several of them are genuinely excellent. It means not letting one basket, however impressive, decide the outcome of your retirement. All investing involves risk, including the possible loss of principal, and no strategy removes that risk entirely. The goal is to understand it, size it appropriately, and build income you don’t have to sell into a downturn to access. Five Things to Check in Your Own Portfolio 1Pull up your 401(k) or IRA’s top ten holdings. Most plan providers list this on your statement or online dashboard. If you don’t see it, call and ask — it’s your money, and you’re entitled to know. 2Add up what percentage those top ten represent. If it’s a plain S&P 500 index fund, expect a meaningful chunk of your total to be concentrated in a handful of names, most of them technology companies. 3Ask whether that concentration matches your risk tolerance at your stage of life. A 35-year-old accumulating wealth can absorb more concentration risk than someone drawing income in retirement. 4Check whether you’re using any form of leverage or margin, even indirectly through certain funds or products, and make sure you understand exactly what happens if those positions move against you. 5Get a second set of eyes on the whole picture. Hit The Books continues its 2026 conference preview series with a full breakdown of the Big Ten! Joey Knish and Brad Powers dig into win totals, early spread numbers, conference storylines, and the angles bettors need to know before the season kicks off. This is the second stop in the series, following last week's SEC preview, with more conferences on the way as Hit The Books builds out its full season betting outlook.

In Part One, we followed Rainey Bethea's story through the murder of Lischia Rarick Edwards, his arrest, conflicting confessions and remarkably swift trial. After a proceeding lasting only a few hours, a jury deliberated for less than five minutes before sentencing him to be publicly hanged.Part Two begins with Black attorneys, journalists and civil-rights advocates attempting to secure Bethea a new trial. They questioned whether he understood his guilty plea, received adequate representation or had his constitutional rights protected. Although a federal judge temporarily stayed the execution, Bethea's petition was dismissed. Governor Chandler set a new execution date of August 14, 1936.Meanwhile, Owensboro prepared for a spectacle. A gallows was erected near the Ohio River, hotels filled with visitors, and residents held “hanging parties.” Thousands gathered around the scaffold, with spectators climbing onto vehicles and nearby buildings for a better view.National attention focused on Daviess County Sheriff Florence Thompson, Kentucky's only female sheriff at the time. Newspapers were fixated on whether she would personally spring the trap. Thompson instead selected Arthur L. Hash, a former Louisville police officer and World War I veteran who volunteered for the job. Witnesses said Hash appeared visibly intoxicated and unsteady on the scaffold.Shortly after 5:00 a.m., Bethea arrived from Louisville. He had been baptized while awaiting execution and reportedly said he had made peace with God. A priest accompanied him onto the scaffold, where he made his final confession but did not address the crowd.Hash released the trap as thousands watched. Afterward, spectators surged toward the scaffold, and souvenir hunters tore pieces from Bethea's clothing while he was reportedly still breathing. Professional execution consultant George Philip Hanna later called it the worst display he had witnessed during approximately 70 hangings.The scene generated immediate outrage. Letters and editorials described it as barbaric and humiliating, arguing that public executions encouraged mob behavior rather than serving justice. Owensboro's newspaper pushed back, accusing visiting journalists of exaggerating the disorder after they were denied the sensational story they expected: Florence Thompson personally pulling the lever.The backlash helped change Kentucky law. In 1938, Governor Chandler signed legislation repealing the provision that allowed people convicted of rape to be publicly hanged in the county where the crime occurred.Rainey Bethea's hanging is generally recognized as the last public execution conducted in the United States. Rock, rhythm and blues band Yarn made a triumphant return to the Americana charts this spring with their new album Saturday Night Sermons. The lead single, “Good Things,” spent several weeks in the AMA's top 20 singles chart and the band is back on the road supporting their 11th-ish album. Founder and frontman Blake Christiana joined Roots Music Rambler this week to talk all about the album, the songs, guitarist Andy Thomas's new solo project and how it affects the band and more. Yarn's first album, almost more of an acoustic, folk offering, dropped way back in 2007. While their music has matured and evolved through the years, they've held on to that folk and country sensibility with songs like “Goodbye Cowgirl” on the new record. But Yarn has also become more of a Southern rock band as various influences have floated in and out of the band. Yarn has been nominated for a number of Grammys over the years and has become a mainstay in the Americana / Rock / Southern Rock genres. Lead guitarist Andy Thomas, a recent guest on Roots Music Rambler, just spun out a solo record. Yarn says he's still in the band and they support him 100%. Christiana talked to us about embracing the various projects and interests of the band members and even said a constantly changing cast of characters is an asset for his music.  Also on this episode, Falls recaps his week at Cowan Creek Mountain Music School in Whitesburg, Ky. He chaperoned his daughter Katie who took a class, but served as a fly-on-the-wall observer of the now 25-year-old summer pickin' and grinnin' academy. Rainey Bethea is remembered as the last person publicly executed in Kentucky—and, depending on the source, the last person publicly executed in the United States. But his story did not begin at the gallows, and the familiar version of what happened in Owensboro leaves out some of its most important and troubling details.In Part One of this two-part series, we trace what is known about Bethea's early life in Roanoke, Virginia, before following him to Owensboro during the Great Depression. As a young Black man arriving in a segregated western Kentucky river town with few resources or connections, Bethea faced severely limited opportunities. His early encounters with Owensboro police also placed him on the radar of a small local law-enforcement system long before the case that would make his name known across the country.In 1936, 70-year-old Lischia Rarick Edwards was found dead inside her Owensboro residence. Within days, authorities identified Bethea as their primary suspect and found him hiding near the banks of the Ohio River.This episode examines the evidence collected against him, his arrest, the threat of mob violence and the decision to move him to Louisville for protection. The case moved with extraordinary speed. A special grand jury was assembled, and prosecutors deliberately pursued a charge that made Bethea eligible for a public hanging under Kentucky law. The jury returned its guilty verdict in less than five minutes.Bethea later claimed that he had not understood the charge to which he pleaded guilty. He said the proceedings had been rushed and that he believed he was entering a plea to robbery rather than assault. By then, however, he had already been sentenced to hang.As Owensboro began preparing for an execution expected to attract thousands of spectators, a group of Black attorneys, journalists and civil-rights advocates stepped forward to investigate whether Bethea's constitutional rights had been violated. Their questions remain central to understanding this case: Did Bethea receive meaningful legal representation? Did he understand his plea? Could a fair trial have taken place in Owensboro at that moment? Would more time, a change of venue or a defense that called witnesses have made any difference?Part Two will follow the legal effort to stop the execution, the intense national attention focused on Daviess County Sheriff Florence Thompson, the growing spectacle surrounding the hanging and what actually happened on the morning of August 14, 1936. Happy Monday Everyone The V236 just had a bad week last week. a blade failed on one of the turbines at ENBW’s [EN-bay-vay’s] HE DREIHT [hay DRYT] offshore wind farm in the German North Sea. Nine hundred and sixty megawatts. There are 64 of those V236 machines. The project hit first power just last November. ENBW says no one was hurt. VESTAS says it has launched a root cause investigation. But a blade failure on your flagship turbine … at one of Germany’s biggest offshore wind farms? That will be a headline. And the industry is watching. Now … from the North Sea … to the coast of Maine. The UNIVERSITY OF MAINE has done something no one in America has done before. They put a full-size floating wind turbine in the ocean. And it is delivering power to the grid. The platform is called VOLTURNUS [vol-TURN-us]. It was assembled onshore … in Brewer, Maine … then towed thirty miles down the PENOBSCOT [peh-NOB-skot] River and out to sea. No specialized heavy-lift vessels. No deepwater pile driving. The hull is made of concrete … sourced locally. Not imported steel. Eighty percent of the best offshore wind in America sits over water too deep for fixed-bottom foundations. Floating platforms like VOLTURNUS could change that math entirely. Meanwhile … in Japan … wind energy just found a brand-new customer. Data centers. EURUS [YOO-rus] ENERGY and TOYOTA TSUSHO [TOY-oh-tah TSOO-shoh] have broken ground on a wind-powered data center in HOKKAIDO [hoh-KY-doh]. It is the first data center in Japan directly connected to a wind farm. The facility sits next to the KOBAOKO [koh-bah-OH-koh] Wind Farm … forty-two megawatts … with a private power line running straight to the servers. And here is the bigger picture. Japan has most of its data centers packed into Tokyo and Osaka. HOKKAIDO has the wind … but not the demand. So instead of sending the power somewhere else … they are bringing the demand to the wind. TOYOTA TSUSHO already operates ten wind farms in the region … more than five hundred megawatts. They are planning a much larger data center cluster by twenty thirty. Ten to twenty megawatts of capacity. And speaking of scale … China just laid out its five-year plan for renewables. The target? A fifty-three percent jump in renewable energy consumption by twenty thirty. According to BLOOMBERG … renewable power use should rise to about one-point-eight billion tons of coal equivalent … Wind and solar generation alone should nearly double … from two-point-three trillion kilowatt-hours to four trillion. And here is the part that matters for reliability. China wants wind and solar … backed by storage … to provide twenty percent of electricity during peak summer and winter evening hours. That is double the current level. Three hundred gigawatts of peak generation from renewables. That is not an aspiration. That is a published national target. Now … before we go … a story from the other end of the scale. In KONGIGANAK [KAHN-gig-uh-nak] … a village in western Alaska … they built five wind turbines. There is no grid connection. No transmission lines running to the outside world. For years … the village ran on diesel generators. The turbines changed that. But they created a new problem. Sometimes … the wind made more electricity than the village could use. No grid to send it to. No big battery bank to store it in. So the engineers came up with something simple. They put special ceramic heaters inside every home. When the wind blows hard … the extra power flows into those heaters. Dense ceramic bricks soak up the energy as heat. And when the wind dies down … that stored heat slowly releases into the house. In Alaska … where winter never seems to end … surplus wind power now keeps homes warm and cuts diesel bills at the same time. There is a shift in the wind energy business at the moment.   It used to be utilities buying megawatts. Now it is tech companies buying uptime. Remote villages buying independence from diesel. And entire nations buying credibility on their climate commitments. Each of those buyers has a different definition of reliability. And every one of them needs turbines that can run for years and years. The wind industry has never had more demand. The question is whether the hardware can keep up with the ambition. `That is the state of the wind industry for the twenty-seventh of July … twenty twenty-six.
