Sisters, brother enlisted during Vietnam For Victoria Ryan, Veterans Day on Tuesday (Nov. 11) will once again evoke memories of the 35 years the Beacon native and her siblings, Deborah and Bill, collectively served in the U.S. Army. Bill joined first, in 1970, followed by Deborah in 1973. Victoria, at the urging of her mother, enlisted just a few months after her sister. Victoria remembers Bill as "laid back, easygoing, athletic and serious minded." At the height of the Vietnam War, he enlisted rather than waiting to be drafted. A field artillery surveyor, he reached the rank of specialist and served in Germany until being discharged in late 1973. He died in a car accident in 1978 at age 25. "Bill had enrolled at University of Tennessee; he wanted to take mechanical engineering," Victoria recalled. Deborah, prior to joining the military, had worked for three years as a model. In the Army, she became the first woman to serve as a military police officer (MP) at West Point, a distinction that earned her a profile in the New York Daily News. Deborah explained to the newspaper why she had enlisted: "We were at war and the men were fighting. Why shouldn't I?" In a 2025 newsletter published by Together We Served, an organization that helps veterans stay connected and chronicles their stories, Victoria told the group how proud she was of her sister. "She pursued a law enforcement career in the Army and was deeply serious about her duties," she said. Early in her posting to West Point, Deborah pulled an officer over for speeding, Victoria recalled. "Do you know who I am?" the officer asked arrogantly. Deborah responded: "Sir, please do not confuse your rank with my authority." Deborah served in the Army until 1990. Her career included stops in Europe and Korea, and she rose to the rank of warrant officer in the criminal investigation division. She died in 2016 at age 61. "Although she was four years younger than me, I always looked up to her in many ways," Victoria said. "She died a proud veteran." Deborah's daughter, Leslie Ann Martell, a West Point graduate, served in Afghanistan and now serves in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Victoria went on to earn the rank of staff sergeant and served in the Army until 1988. In the mid-1970s, she and Deborah were both posted at West Point, where they "had a lot of great times," said Victoria. "We played tennis, had lunch together and went to Army football games; Deborah loved those games." She also recalled happy get-togethers with Deborah, Bill and their parents at the family's Beacon home during that period. While stationed at West Point, Victoria worked in administration for the third regiment Corps of Cadets. Her career also took her to Hawaii, Holland and numerous posts across the mainland U.S. Like her sister, Victoria was not afraid to speak her mind. During a physical training program at Fort Myers, Virginia, she was appalled that early morning runs were conducted in Arlington National Cemetery. She protested up the chain of command, all the way to the sergeant major of the Army. To her "astonished relief," the runs ceased. "I felt shame, embarrassment and guilt for my part in disrespecting this revered and sacred cemetery," said Victoria. "I needed to take a stand." Her saddest military experience came during her final assignment in the Army casualty office. In 1986, a DC-8 bringing personnel stationed in Egypt home to Fort Campbell, Kentucky, crashed after taking off from Gander International Airport in Newfoundland, killing all 248 passengers and the eight crew members. Calling it "the worst peacetime military aircraft disaster in the history of the U.S. Army," Victoria said her office spent months identifying all the bodies. "We told our people out in the field where to go, who to speak to and exactly, word for word, what to say to the next of kin about their loved one passing away," she said. Now retired and living in Knoxville, Tennessee, where she is an active member of...

In this globe-trotting episode of The Bourbon Road, hosts Jim Shannon and Todd Ritter are joined once again by Rob Carter, one-third of the “Maltmigos,” for a single malt tasting session that travels from the Himalayas to the Highlands. Though Amzie couldn't make the show this time, the malt trio powers forward from their tasting post at The Corner Rickhouse in Frankfort, Kentucky. The spotlight this episode is on Royal Tiger Single Malt, a double-cask expression from Ocean King Distillers in Goa, India. Distilled by Craig Enriques, this single malt is made from six-row Himalayan barley and aged first in new ex-bourbon casks before being re-casked for a second maturation. The result? A spirit layered with creamy vanilla, overripe pear, honey-drizzled bread, and a whisper of spice from the oak—delightfully balanced and surprisingly sweet for fans of traditional single malt. Jim, Todd, and Rob dig into the expression's structure, remarking on its buttercream and vanilla-laced nose, light body, and smooth, sweet finish. They note that while the whiskey skews a little sweeter than their usual fare, it offers a refreshing break from the bolder, high-proof bourbons they typically favor. For a $49 bottle, the consensus was unanimous: this Indian single malt punches well above its weight. Other expressions tasted during the show are Ice Cream from Glenmorangie, Loch Lemond and Glen Scotia. As they sip, the conversation ranges from distilling techniques to global whiskey culture. The team highlights India's rapidly growing single malt scene and how regional water sources, climate, and local grain are contributing to distinct profiles that rival the best from Scotland or the U.S. They also muse about the potential for single malt cream liqueurs and whether peated versions could offer a new kind of dessert dram. Beyond the glass, the hosts discuss upcoming barrel picks in western Kentucky, share travel plans to Fort Campbell and Clarksville, and reflect on the value of tasting outside your comfort zone. For Rob, this was a first-time single malt deep dive; for listeners, it's a lesson in palate exploration, regional nuance, and just plain good company. So whether you're a bourbon loyalist or a curious malthead, this episode is an open invitation to explore a world of flavor—no passport required. What factors of the military lifestyle have you seen contribute to low mental health, and how might you work to address and/or mitigate those factors? Claire's thesis and interview talks about taking a “strengths-based perspective,” and Josh mentions Romans 5:3-4, too. How can our relationship with Jesus transform our view of trials we may experience?

One of the toughest challenges in military human performance is how to implement programs that work for reserve service members. With only a couple days a month of direct interaction, how do you improve their health and fitness behaviors the rest of the month? Who better to workshop solutions to this issue with than the Chief of the Army Reserve? Lieutenant General Robert Harter was an H2F skeptic at first (we discuss why), but now he's a believer and trying to mobilize the right leaders and resources to improve human performance for his part time soldiers.
In Episode 575: Dogman Siege of Fort Campbell, we are joined by Nick, the man behind the renowned Instagram account Tales From The Grid Square, and Isaiah, who brings us thrilling accounts of dogmen taunting soldiers from the shadowy depths of the "Back 40" on Fort Campbell. Isaiah initially reached out to Nick, accompanied by two fellow soldiers, each offering their unique perspective on a harrowing night when a dogman unleashed chaos within the base. This extraordinary event prompted a frantic, repeated radio call for assistance using the term "dogman." However, the presence of this creature is far from novel at Fort Campbell, with tales dating back to the 1970s recounting its intrusion onto the base and its confrontation with soldiers. Fort Campbell has gained notoriety for such occurrences, and today, Isaiah and Nick share firsthand encounters with dogmen, as well as stories they've gathered from other soldiers stationed around the base who've come face to face with this otherworldly monster. #PresidentMayhem is back. In version 2.0. As the Trump indictment continues to unfold, we're breaking down how it will impact America, the race for President, our national defense and especially, independents nationwide. From a uniquely and truly independent standpoint. And we've got the perfect guest and the perfect conversation to break it all down. It's a real and fiery talk. About real issues and real people. It's a conversation with a self-described political bomb thrower–who understands what Trump is all about–and what is to come. A guy who helped make the Republican party what it is. And a guy who now spends his time trying to steer the Republican party away from where he helped guide it. Joe Walsh (@WalshFreedom) is back on the show, and he's coming in hot. And you can only get conversations like this here. And Paul Rieckhoff quickly breaks down the latest news you need to know and probably missed. From new American airstrikes in Syria, to another injection of American military support to Ukraine, to the American troops killed last week in a training accident in Kentucky, to why Tulsi Gabbard is not an independent and why he's boycotting a so-called independent convention in Texas.
