After 20 years of prescribing hormone replacement therapy to tens of thousands of patients, both in her clinic and through her telemedicine company Menrva, I have identified the critical gaps in how HRT is being prescribed, monitored, and optimized across the United States. This isn't about "should you" do hormones. This is about how to do them right. In this episode,I break down the 10 non-negotiables you need to know if you're considering HRT, currently on HRT, or feeling like your current protocol isn't working. From the biochemistry of bioidentical vs. synthetic hormones to why your gut health determines how well your estrogen gets metabolized, this is the master class your doctor should have given you, but didn't. We're talking about natural bioidentical hormones, the truth behind the Women's Health Initiative (spoiler: it was about Premarin and synthetic progestins, NOT bioidentical estrogen), and how to use precision medicine to guide YOUR hormone replacement therapy, not a one-size-fits-all protocol that leaves 50% of women undertreated and 25% overtreated. Discover The 10 Non-negotiables: #1 - Bioidentical Is NOT a Buzzword #2 - Your Symptoms Are Metabolic Signals #3 - The WHI Study Was About Premarin & Provera #4 - Your Gut & Estrogen Are in Constant Conversation #5 - Testosterone Is a Woman's Friend After 40 #6 - HRT Is NOT One-Size-Fits-All #7 - Timing Matters #8 - Delivery Method Makes or Breaks Results #9 - BHRT Works Best When You Address the Big Five #10 - The Goal Isn't to Feel Younger, It's to Feel More Like YOU Midlife isn't the beginning of the end, it's a time of radical transition and ownership. Hormone replacement therapy is one of the biggest levers you have. Use it wisely.

This toxic protein is one of the worst foods for your body. Find out about the worst protein in the world that's often marketed as healthy, despite being one of the most dangerous protein sources. This is the protein you should never eat!0:00 Introduction: Protein you should never eat0:49 The worst protein for your health3:37 Ultra-processed proteins 8:17 The worst protein in the world 8:55 Toxic proteins to avoidThe EAT-Lancet planetary health diet aims for a plant-based world where red meat is replaced with plant-based protein. Surprisingly, the one protein you should never eat is plant-based!So what's the worst protein in the world? Here are 11 facts about one of the most dangerous protein sources:1. The industrial extraction of defatted soy flour involves fat removal from soy flour using hexane, a component of gasoline. This ingredient is considered GRAS, or generally recognized as safe. This is a legal loophole that allows a company to classify its own product as safe.2. This ultra-processed protein is a byproduct of the soybean oil industry.3. It contains heavy metals such as arsenic, cadmium, and lead. 4. It's thermo-mechanically restructured, which means high temperatures and machinery are used to restructure the product so that it mimics the texture of meat. 5. This product makes around $1.39 billion per year.6. It's marketed as healthy and has been around since the 1960s.7. It contains sodium hydroxide, which changes the pH, chemically altering the protein.8. It contains hydrogen peroxide and titanium dioxide used as bleaching agents.9. It's composed of sponge-like chunks of artificial meat that's rehydrated with additional seed oil. 10. Artificial flavor and color are added to mimic the taste and appearance of meat.11. The protein is dried at around 347 degrees Fahrenheit, so by the time you cook it, it's been heated twice. The estrogenic effect of soy is not destroyed by heat! The protein I'm referring to is textured vegetable protein, made from the “vegetable” known as soy. This highly refined, ultra-processed protein contains heavy metals and is GMO, so it may contain traces of glyphosate. Most people blame posture for their neck and shoulder pain, but research shows the real root cause is often hormones, not mechanics. In this episode, Ben explains how cortisol, thyroid hormones, sex hormones, insulin, and even growth hormone can lock your muscles into chronic tension and why most doctors miss these connections. You'll learn how stress hormones alter pain pathways, increase inflammation, and create tight traps, stiff necks, and burning shoulders. Ben breaks down a simple daily Cortisol Calm Protocol using breathwork, post-meal walking, a no-stimulation hour, and gratitude to quickly shift your body out of fight-or-flight. He then exposes the deep link between an underactive thyroid and muscle aches, frozen shoulder, fatigue, and chronic stiffness — plus which full thyroid panel to request from your doctor (not just TSH). Next, he explains why women 40–60 experience sharp increases in joint pain during perimenopause and menopause due to changes in estrogen that affect lubrication, cartilage, strength, and inflammation. You'll also hear why people with insulin resistance or diabetes are five times more likely to develop frozen shoulder. High insulin creates stiff connective tissue and slows healing. Ben gives practical metabolic strategies: lower carbs, test fasting insulin, walk after meals, strength train, and use intermittent fasting. The episode closes with the overlooked role of deep sleep and growth hormone in tissue repair. Poor sleep dramatically reduces recovery, while fasting and strength training boost growth hormone naturally. FREE GUIDE: How To Lose 1 Pound Of Fat Per Day HERE -https://bit.ly/48AYCfC

If people were given a resource that laid out the chronology of immunization, would they still vaccinate? Billions of people, all across the world, have either received a shot or been recommended to get one. And every day, novel injections are being developed, tested and rolled out to the public. While many are refused proper informed consent, others remain ignorant to the dangers of these products because of censorship. That is why Shaz Khan has written a tool, referencing over fifteen hundred years worth of information, pertaining to the timeline of vaccination. This essential resource is made for everyone — whether a parent or practitioner, student or scientist, representative or researcher. Find out more about its release with Shaz Khan and Paul Thomas on “Pediatric Perspectives” this week!
Dr. MaryAnn Wilbur trained her whole life to care for patients, then left medicine behind when it became a machine that punished empathy and rewarded throughput. She didn't burn out. She got out. A gynecologic oncologist, public health researcher, and no-bullshit single mom, MaryAnn walked straight off the cliff her career breadcrumbed her to—and lived to write the book.In this episode, we talk about what happens when doctors are forced to choose between their ethics and their employment, why medicine now operates like a low-resource war zone, and how the system breaks the very people it claims to elevate. We cover moral injury, medical gaslighting, and why she refused to lie on surgical charts just to boost hospital revenue. Her escape plan? Tell the truth, organize the exodus, and build something that actually works. If you've ever wondered why your doctor disappeared, this is your answer. If you're a clinician hiding your own suffering, this is your permission slip.RELATED LINKSMaryAnn Wilbur on LinkedInMedicine ForwardClinician Burnout FoundationThe Doctor Is No Longer In (Book)Suck It Up, Buttercup (Documentary)FEEDBACKLike this episode? This week we are talking about Pancreatic cancer. This is a type of cancer that begins as a growth of cells in the pancreas. The pancreas lies behind the lower part of the stomach. It makes enzymes that help digest food and hormones that help manage blood sugar. The most common type of pancreatic cancer is pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. This type begins in the cells that line the ducts that carry digestive enzymes out of the pancreas. Pancreatic cancer rarely is found at its early stages when the chance of curing it is greatest. This is because it often doesn't cause symptoms until after it has spread to other organs. Your health care team considers the extent of your pancreatic cancer when creating your treatment plan. Treatment options may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy or a mix of these. Pancreatic cancer often doesn't cause symptoms until the disease is advanced. When they happen, signs and symptoms of pancreatic cancer may include: Belly pain that spreads to the sides or back. Loss of appetite. Weight loss. Yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes, called jaundice. Light-colored or floating stools. Dark-colored urine. Itching. New diagnosis of diabetes or diabetes that's getting harder to control. Pain and swelling in an arm or leg, which might be caused by a blood clot. Tiredness or weakness. It's not clear what causes pancreatic cancer. Doctors have found some factors that might raise the risk of this type of cancer. These include smoking and having a family history of pancreatic cancer. Understanding the pancreas The pancreas is about 6 inches (15 centimeters) long and looks something like a pear lying on its side. It releases hormones, including insulin. These hormones help the body process the sugar in the foods you eat. The pancreas also makes digestive juices to help the body digest food and take in nutrients. How pancreatic cancer forms Pancreatic cancer happens when cells in the pancreas develop changes in their DNA. A cell's DNA holds the instructions that tell a cell what to do. In healthy cells, the instructions tell the cells to grow and multiply at a set rate. The cells die at a set time. In cancer cells, the changes give different instructions. The changes tell the cancer cells to make many more cells quickly. Cancer cells can keep living when healthy cells would die. This causes there to be too many cells. The cancer cells might form a mass called a tumor. The tumor can grow to invade and destroy healthy body tissue. In time, cancer cells can break away and spread to other parts of the body. Most pancreatic cancer begins in the cells that line the ducts of the pancreas. This type of cancer is called pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma or pancreatic exocrine cancer. Less often, cancer can form in the hormone-producing cells or the neuroendocrine cells of the pancreas. These types of cancer are called pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors or pancreatic endocrine cancer. Risk factors Factors that might raise the risk of pancreatic cancer include: Smoking. Type 2 diabetes. Chronic inflammation of the pancreas, called pancreatitis. Family history of DNA changes that can increase cancer risk. These include changes in the BRCA2 gene, Lynch syndrome and familial atypical multiple mole melanoma (FAMMM) syndrome. Family history of pancreatic cancer. Obesity. Older age. Most people with pancreatic cancer are over 65. Drinking a lot of alcohol. As pancreatic cancer progresses, it can cause complications such as: Weight loss. People with pancreatic cancer might lose weight as the cancer uses more of the body's energy. Nausea and vomiting caused by cancer treatments or a cancer pressing on the stomach might make it hard to eat. Sometimes the body has trouble getting nutrients from food because the pancreas isn't making enough digestive juices. Jaundice. Pancreatic cancer that blocks the liver's bile duct can cause jaundice. Signs include yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes. Jaundice can cause dark-colored urine and pale-colored stools. Jaundice often occurs without belly pain. If the bile duct is blocked, a plastic or metal tube called a stent can be put inside it. The stent helps hold the bile duct open. This is done using a procedure called endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, also called ERCP. During ERCP, a health care professional puts a long tube with a tiny camera, called an endoscope, down the throat. The tube goes through the stomach and into the upper part of the small intestine. The health professional puts a dye into the pancreatic ducts and bile ducts through a small tube that fits through the endoscope. The dye helps the ducts show up on imaging tests. The health professional uses those images to place a stent at the right spot in the duct to help hold it open. Pain. A growing tumor may press on nerves in your abdomen, causing pain that can become severe. Pain medications can help you feel more comfortable. Treatments, such as radiation and chemotherapy, might help slow tumor growth and provide some pain relief. When medicines aren't helping, a health care professional might suggest a celiac plexus block. This procedure uses a needle to put alcohol into the nerves that control pain in the belly. The alcohol stops the nerves from sending pain signals to the brain. Bowel blockage. Pancreatic cancer can grow into or press on the first part of the small intestine, called the duodenum. This can block the flow of digested food from the stomach into the intestines. A health care professional might suggest putting a tube called a stent in the small intestine to hold it open. Sometimes, it might help to have surgery to place a feeding tube. Or surgery can attach the stomach to a lower part of the intestines where the cancer isn't causing a blockage. Prevention Screening for people with a high risk of pancreatic cancer Screening uses tests to look for signs of pancreatic cancer in people who don't have symptoms. It might be an option if you have a very high risk of pancreatic cancer. Your risk might be high if you have a strong family history of pancreatic cancer or if you have an inherited DNA change that increases the risk of cancer. Pancreatic cancer screening might involve imaging tests, such as MRI and ultrasound. These tests are generally repeated every year. The goal of screening is to find pancreatic cancer when it's small and most likely to be cured. Research is ongoing, so it's not yet clear whether screening can lower the risk of dying of pancreatic cancer. There are risks to screening. This includes the chance of finding something that requires surgery but later turns out to not be cancer. Talk about the benefits and risks of pancreatic cancer screening with your health care team. Together you can decide whether screening is right for you. Genetic testing for cancer risk If you have a family history of pancreatic cancer, discuss it with a health care professional. The health professional can review your family history and help you understand whether genetic testing might be right for you. Genetic testing can find DNA changes that run in families and increase the risk of cancer. If you're interested in genetic testing, you might be referred to a genetic counselor or other health care professional trained in genetics. Ways to lower risk You might reduce your risk of pancreatic cancer if you: Stop smoking. If you smoke, talk to a member of your health care team about ways to help you stop. These might include support groups, medicines and nicotine replacement therapy. Maintain a healthy weight. If you are at a healthy weight, work to maintain it. If you need to lose weight, aim for a slow, steady weight loss of 1 to 2 pounds (0.5 to 1 kilogram) a week. To help you lose weight, exercise most days of the week. Slowly increase the amount of exercise you get. Choose a diet rich in vegetables, fruit and whole grains with smaller portions. (CREDITS: MAYO CLINIC)

December 18, 1970. Decades after the end of WWII, a Nazi doctor is on trial. Today is judgment day in a long, difficult legal battle, but this case isn't about war crimes. The German pharmaceutical company Grunenthal is charged with the worst medical disaster in history: the Thalidomide scandal. The shoddily tested and hastily approved drug made its way into medicine cabinets around the world, and a decade after its release, the reality is becoming clear: Thalidomide is killing babies. Who are the heroes who brought down Thalidomide? And how did this disaster change pharmaceutical regulations forever? We got an update about "aphantasia," the condition where you cannot see mental images, and now we're wondering if we're the weird ones because the way we see the images is apparently strange??? We think we are on the precipice of a scientific discovery that will be named after us. Susie talks about a man who had his wife cryogenically frozen, but now it's awkward because he got a new girlfriend, so hopefully they don't bring the wife back to life or he's going to have a lot of explaining to do. We hear why female scuba divers are better than their male counterparts, and Sarah is soooo happy. We learn about a woman who was stabbed to death (including in the back) and authorities are still claiming it was a suicide. Predictably, Sarah's got a theory. Plus, we learn about a "reparations happy hour" where people of color drink for free thanks to donations from white people who aren't allowed to come, and we debate whether this is a good or bad idea.Brain Candy Podcast Website - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/Brain Candy Podcast Book Recommendations - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/books/Brain Candy Podcast Merchandise - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/candy-store/Brain Candy Podcast Candy Club - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/product/candy-club/Brain Candy Podcast Sponsor Codes - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/support-us/Brain Candy Podcast Social Media & Platforms:Brain Candy Podcast LIVE Interactive Trivia Nights - https://www.youtube.com/@BrainCandyPodcast/streamsBrain Candy Podcast Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastHost Susie Meister Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterHost Sarah Rice Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBrain Candy Podcast on X: https://www.x.com/braincandypodBrain Candy Podcast Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/braincandy (JOIN FREE - TONS OF REALITY TV CONTENT)Brain Candy Podcast Sponsors, partnerships, & Products that we love:Get 40% off your first box PLUS get a free item in every box for life. The Sforza Altarpiece (Pala Sforzesca) is among the single most important works of art commissioned by Ludovico il Moro. Through this painting, we can trace both the heavy religious history of Milan and the dynastic ambitions of the Sforza court. By investigating this painting, we can further understand the atmosphere leading to the decline of Sforza power. Additionally, this painting shows the dramatic influence of the convergence of styles in Milan, from Leonardo da Vinci to the Flemish masters. With this comes the complicated attribution of the work, which until very recently, had remained unknown. Work Discussed: Giovanni Angelo Mirofoli (Master of the Sforza Altarpiece), Madonna Enthroned with Child, the Doctors of the Church and the Family of Ludovico il Moro (Sforza Altarpiece), 1495 https://pinacotecabrera.org/collezioni/collezione-on-line/madonna-in-trono-con-il-bambino-i-dottori-della-chiesa-e-la-famiglia-di-ludovico-il-moro-pala-sforzesca/Support/Watch/Follow: https://linktr.ee/italian_renaissance_podcastGet additional content by becoming a Patron: patreon.com/TheItalianRenaissancePodcast Support the show
