The Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office Fugitive Unit tracked Coria to Acworth, where he was arrested without incident after being monitored leaving an address in Dunwoody. Researchers verified AI predictions by testing 100 peptides in the lab, finding many effective against resistant bacteria. The study involved analyzing over 60,000 metagenomes globally. The resulting AMPSphere database is now publicly available to aid antibiotic discovery. STORY 7: Women overweight as teen or young adult more likely to have stroke: study New research reveals that women who were overweight as teenagers or young adults are significantly more likely to suffer a stroke by age 55, while men do not share the same risk. The Finnish study followed over 10,000 participants for 40 years and found women overweight at ages 14 or 31 had a higher risk of ischemic stroke, even if they lost weight later. Overweight women at age 31 were also more likely to suffer bleeding strokes. Men had increased risk only if obese at age 31. The study emphasizes the long-term health effects of early obesity and suggests health professionals address weight issues in a non-stigmatizing manner. Break 1: MOG   STORY 1: Two More Auto Theft Crew Members Have Been Arrested, Two Others Remain At Large An auto theft ring in Atlanta has led to three arrests, with East Point residents Kylijah Devon Yates, Randy Daniel Martinez, and Javaris Gamble apprehended. Two other suspects, Giovanni Bell and Emmanuel Chavarria Ornelas, remain at large. The crew allegedly broke into cars across metro Atlanta, with 400 incidents reported in Gwinnett County alone. Yates was arrested in East Point, while Martinez was found in Kissimmee, Florida, with over 100 active arrest warrants. Charges include entering auto, theft, aggravated assault, and motor vehicle theft. Police urge anyone with information on Bell and Ornelas to contact authorities or Crime Stoppers anonymously for a cash reward. STORY 2: Teen with incredibly rare genetic condition first in world to be cured Thirteen-year-old Kai Xue, diagnosed with the rare WILD syndrome, was cured by a pioneering team of British doctors in a world first. Suffering from severe chylous ascites, she accumulated 28 liters of lymphatic fluid in her abdomen. Dr. Mona Mossad, along with experienced surgeons, successfully removed the excess fluid and repaired a liver leak. Kai's journey included visits to multiple hospitals and even China for treatment before finding a cure. Dr. Mossad's innovative approach, including lymphatic drainage improvement and delicate surgery to block tiny liver lymphatic vessels, led to Kai's remarkable recovery. Kai's mother, Ning Chen, expressed immense gratitude to the medical team for their exceptional care and dedication. STORY 3: Gwinnett launches 'educational hub' to explain upcoming transit referendum Gwinnett County has launched an "educational hub," named "It's Your Ride Gwinnett," to inform voters about its transit expansion plans ahead of an upcoming sales tax referendum. The hub offers residents information on the county's transit expansion plan through monthly videos and resources. County commissioners are expected to vote this summer to place a 30-year, 1% sales tax referendum on the November ballot to fund the expansion. The online hub aims to explain the transit plans without advocating for the referendum, navigating state laws regarding political advocacy. The expansion includes spreading microtransit service county-wide, creating a bus rapid transit route, and offering routes to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. If approved, the sales tax would replace property taxes currently funding the transit system.   We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. While tornado occurrences regularly exceed 1,000 annually in the U.S., the majority are considered light or moderate. However, high-intensity tornadoes (EF2+) are responsible for over 90% of tornado-related fatalities, injuries, and property damage despite their lower frequency. Geographical shifts in tornado occurrences over the past two decades have seen an increase in high-intensity tornadoes in the Southeast, particularly in states like Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia, leading to substantial impacts on affected communities.   STORY 7: Brain breakthrough: Scientists can create brain cells that can communicate Scientists have made a breakthrough by creating brain cells in a dish and connecting them to mimic circuits found in our brains. This advancement sheds light on how our brains function and could aid in understanding and treating neurological and psychiatric disorders. Using a technique developed by researchers at the University of Tokyo, lab-grown brain-mimicking tissues, called neural organoids, were linked via axonal bundles, resembling connections in the human brain. This method allowed for the observation of complex network development and activity synchronization between organoids, resembling connections between brain regions. The study suggests that studying lab-grown human neural circuits could enhance our understanding of brain networks and potentially lead to improved treatments for various conditions.   We'll have final thoughts after this.   Break 4: GCPS JOBS Signoff – Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Gwinnett Daily Post podcast. In our last conversation, (Episode 26) we shared Alice Lovelace's tumultuous history as a solo teaching artist and performer working with young writers all across the rural south. What follows is Alice's next chapter. In it she talks about building an extraordinary multi-disciplinary, cross-sector cultural institution that rises up from the funky detritus of the pandemic as a new beachhead of creative change in a small Georgia Community. BIOAlice Lovelace is a cultural worker, performance artist, teacher, poet, organizer, author, playwright, and arts administer. Since 1976 Atlanta has been her home of choice; a fertile ground for artistic growth and activism, and in 1978, she discovered the Neighborhood Arts Center and met Ebon Dooley (Leo Hale) and Toni Cade Bambara. Together, they organized poetry readings and classes while conducting meetings for the Southern Collective of African American Writers (SCAAW). In 1981, Ebon and Alice founded the nonprofit: Southeast Community Cultural Center located at the former Grant Park Elementary School and in 1984 opened the former school as The Arts Exchange – a studio space for artists, a theater, recording studio, two galleries, a dance studio, and home to the Atlanta Writers Resource Center. Between 1998 and 2000 Alice became executive director of Alternate ROOTS, an artists-led southern regional organization; and along with Dr. Lisa Delpit and actress Jane Fonda, she founded and stepped into the role of executive director of the Atlanta Partnership for Arts in Learning (APAL). Currently serving as the president of the board of ArtsXchange, Alice continues to serve the public need through programs implemented at the nonprofit's newly renovate facility in East Point, GA.

#917 - Kip Attaway The Kip Attaway Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour. Are you here? Howdy! Welcome to The Paul Leslie Hour. It's our extreme pleasure to present this interview from the archives with Kip Attaway. This interview went out on the radio back in 2007 and since that it's been sitting on a disc. It's our pleasure to bring it out to you all on YouTube, Spotify, Apple, iHeartRadio, and everywhere else. Kip Attaway is one of the artists who is not so easy to categorize. Some folks know him as an artist with a comedic side. His songs can be quite hysterical, and some songs could be considered offensive to some. He's known for and has a cult following for his comedy, but many may overlook his tremendous songwriting.  Kip Attaway writes everything from ballads to up-tempo stuff in calypso, country-western, and even Hawaiian music. Some of his songs have been recorded by other artists and many have charted. Micky and the Motorcars recorded his song “Rock Springs to Cheyenne,” and what a fantastic tune that is.  You will not regret the chance to listen to all of Kip Attaway's music, from the wild and crazy to the serious and pensive. He is not an artist you will forget. A good way to start is to join us for this look at his music and the man himself. This interview was taped at the legendary Spondivits II restaurant in Cumming, Georgia. The Cumming location has closed, but the original Spondivits in East Point is still thriving.  With this Kip Attaway intervew, you'll laugh, you'll think and most of all, we hope you have fun! Before we start the interview, just know how much we appreciate your being here. You can help us just by listening, but did you know you can give yourself and others the gift of stories? Keep us running by going right here, and we thank you. And now, let's hear what Kip Attaway had to say all of those years ago! Let's listen. All of us. Together.

One teen dies and one survives after falling in partially frozen lake

Sherry Rosen had a feeling something bad would happen when she spotted five kids playing by the bank of Ellison Lake Wednesday evening. As she left for dinner around 5 p.m., Rosen called Kennesaw police after she saw one of the teenagers had walked onto the ice at the edge of the lake. When she got back home at 7 PM she saw dozens of fire trucks and police cars, and knew her worst fears had come true. Two 16-year-olds had fallen through the ice in the lake. While rescue personnel were able to successfully save one teen, the other died, Cobb Fire confirmed Thursday. According to Officer David Buchanan, a Kennesaw Police Department spokesperson, officers were dispatched to the scene around 5:09 p.m. Wednesday, arriving at approximately 5:20 p.m. Kennesaw police and Cobb County police were able to rescue one of the teens from the water before Cobb County Fire arrived, according to the fire department. But the second teen was not located and pulled from the water until approximately 6:50 p.m. Rescuers attempted to resuscitate on the bank of the lake before transporting him to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Four rescue personnel were treated for cold exposure, Cobb Fire said, and have been released from medical care. Surface water temperatures at Ellison Lake were recorded as low as 28 degrees, and rescuers were in the water for up to an hour and 20 minutes, according to Cobb Fire. One rescuer was taken to the hospital for hypothermia treatment, and another suffered abrasions during rescue efforts. Sheltering Grace Ministry, a nonprofit which provides services to pregnant mothers experiencing homelessness, is relocating its headquarters to Cobb County. The group announced this week it has sold its East Point location and will soon welcome clients to a new office on Franklin Gateway. An open house for the office is scheduled for next month. In operation for the last 16 years, Sheltering Grace Ministry says its aim is to provide shelter and support for homeless pregnant women, including life skills training to help women emerge from poverty. The organization is currently in the process of obtaining a new property where it can build a series of small homes to house expecting mothers, per a news release. Currently, Sheltering Grace Ministry has six staff and board members along with a team of volunteers. The open house at the new Marietta location will be held from 12 to 6 p.m. on January 16, at 1180 Franklin Gateway, Suite 100, near Delk Road. Most bills the General Assembly passes each year take effect on July 1. But a smattering of new laws enacted during the 2022 legislative session will kick in this Sunday, Jan. 1, including a bill making it easier for food trucks to do business and several new or expanded tax credits. The food truck legislation does away with a current requirement in Georgia law that food truck operators obtain a permit and inspection in every county where they do business. While the tax credit bills technically became effective last summer, they don't really become reality until New Year's Day, the beginning of the tax year. Three of the measures create new income tax credits. House Bill 424 will provide a tax credit to Georgia taxpayers who contribute to nonprofit organizations that help foster children about to age out of the foster care system. More than 700 young men and women age out of the system each year. Senate Bill 361, which was championed by Lieutenant Governor Geoff Duncan, will provide a dollar-for-dollar income tax credit on contributions to public safety initiatives in the taxpayer's community. Law enforcement agencies will be able to use the money for police officer salary supplements, to purchase or maintain department equipment and/or to establish or maintain a co-responder program.  Senate Bill 87, the Jack Hill Veterans' Act, honors the late state Sen. Jack Hill of Reidsville, who died in 2020. It provides income tax credits in exchange for contributions to scholarships for service-disabled veterans through the Technical College System of Georgia Foundation. Another bill that will take effect on Sunday, Senate Bill 332, also known as the Inform Consumers Act, is aimed at preventing criminals from selling goods stolen from retail stores on any online marketing platform. It establishes financial and contact information requirements for high-volume sellers to online marketplaces and requires such platforms to establish an option for consumers to report suspicious activity. Pebblebrook High School's marching band is in New Orleans for one of college football's marquee matchups this weekend. The Mighty Marching Machine is one of the bands invited to play the Sugar Bowl contest between Alabama and Kansas State. Led by Director Eulas Kirtdoll, the band is performing in both the parade and game Saturday afternoon. The band reported on Facebook Thursday they'd loaded up their buses before dawn (call time was 4 a.m.) to make the trek down south. Later that day, they said they'd arrived safely in the Big Easy and were gearing up for Saturday's showcase after performing at Jackson Square downtown. After fundraising for months in the lead-up to the weekend, the band was helped along by a $15,000 donation from Atlanta's Witherite Law Group. This isn't the school's first rodeo on the national stage. In 2018, the band trekked to Chicago to perform in the city's Thanksgiving parade. The parade was yesterday, processing down Decatur Street along New Orleans' French Quarter and ending at Canal Street. The Sugar Bowl, meanwhile, will kick off at noon today and will be broadcasted on ESPN.   A procession of cars snaked down Ben King Road in Kennesaw Wednesday night as dozens of families came to revel in holiday lights. With hundreds of thousands of lights twinkling in the darkness, Lights of Joy remains one of Cobb's best light shows — including a tunnel of lights for holiday photo-ops. Lights of Joy can be found at 1510 Ben King Road and has been open every night from 6 p.m. until 11 p.m., with free admission. Its final night will be January 1, New Year's Day.   Amani Johnson scored 15 points to break the Kennesaw State Division I career scoring record as the Owls raced past Coastal Georgia 109-53 on Thursday at the KSU Convocation Center. Johnson, who broke the mark previously held by Alexis Poole, finished with her first double-double of the season, also dishing out a career-high 13 assists. The Owls also set a program record for points as six players finished the night in double-digits. Jah'Che Whitfield had a game-high 19 points, Bre'Lyn Snipes scored a career-best 16 points, Lyndsey Whilby and Keyarah Berry chipped in 11 points each and Stacie Jones added 10. The Owls will be back in action Monday as they face the Eastern Kentucky University Colonels. #CobbCounty #Georgia #LocalNews      -            -            -            -            -            The Marietta Daily Journal Podcast is local news for Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and all of Cobb County.             Subscribe today, so you don't miss an episode! MDJOnline            Register Here for your essential digital news.            https://www.chattahoocheetech.edu/  https://cuofga.org/ https://www.esogrepair.com/ https://www.drakerealty.com/           Find additional episodes of the MDJ Podcast here.             This Podcast was produced and published for the Marietta Daily Journal and MDJ Online by BG Ad Group   For more information be sure to visit https://www.bgpodcastnetwork.com                      See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The dopest part about hosting CashColorCannabis is getting to know sides of people you never knew existed. Over the last 6 years of recording, there have been many nights when I walked saying to myself, " I would've never thought that about them." My episode with Lance Roberston was one of those nights. While familiar with the East Point city councilman, this was the first time I had a real chance to just speak with him. I learned quickly that he has been to this studio before. Except when he was here last, the year was different, the hairstyles were different and the vibe was way more different. And that's just the beginning of this interview. Listen to our conversation with councilman Robertston where we speak about his life in politics, bringing CBD to a neighborhood that may need it, the inaugural Hapeville Hemp Festival, and more. This September 22nd marks the 116th anniversary of the Atlanta Race Massacre. If you're a long time listener, you may remember I covered this in Episode 19. But what you may also remember, is that I called it the 1906 Race Riot. That has been the accepted nomenclature since the event happened in 1906, but today, I want to revisit the story, add more history and detail and share the updated language and why it's so important.  To do that, I have a very special guest, Ann Hill Bond. She talks about the Change the Name Campaign, how the massacre reached South Atlanta and East Point, the often overlooked financial impact and the role of Black Press.  SIGN THE PETITION! Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.
