Tuesday, February 17, 2026Last Week After Epiphany As we step into Mardi Gras, today's readings call us to humility, discernment, and a deeper knowing of Christ.In Proverbs 30:1–4, 24–33, Agur confesses his limitations and marvels at the greatness of God. True wisdom begins not with self-confidence but with reverent humility. Even the smallest creatures reveal quiet diligence and order—reminding us that wisdom is often steady, disciplined, and restrained. Pride and strife, however, only stir conflict.In Philippians 3:1–11, Paul lays down his spiritual résumé and counts it all loss compared to the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus. Righteousness is not achieved—it is received. What matters most is being found in Him, sharing in His life, His sufferings, and His resurrection power.And in John 18:28–38, Jesus stands before Pilate, unshaken. While religious leaders cling to power and politics swirl with tension, Jesus speaks of a kingdom not of this world. Truth is not a concept to debate—it is a King to follow.This episode invites us to exchange pride for humility, performance for relationship, and empty noise for the deep, steady wisdom that comes from knowing Christ.

“The great day of the Lord is near, near and hastening fast.” Zephaniah 1:14 Zephaniah speaks at the precise moment when Judah's long experiment with compromise reaches its breaking point. This is not a story of transferred allegiance, but of accommodation. Judah still carries the Lord's name and maintains His Temple, but they have woven other gods into the fabric of daily life. This is YHWH-plus religion. It presents itself as a sophisticated, tolerant "synthesis," but it is far more dangerous than honest paganism. Judah's elites swore by the LORD and by Milcom in the same breath (Zeph. 1:5), treating God's Word as negotiable opinion rather than final authority. Zephaniah begins with a rare four-generation genealogy, tracing his line back to King Hezekiah. As a royal cousin to King Josiah, he is a "Corrective Branch" of the family tree. While the ruling line under Manasseh and Amon sought power through foreign alliances, Zephaniah's branch had been preserving the "Unbroken Chain." Even his father's name, Cushi ("The Ethiopian"), hints at the persistent "Cushite" thread in the Bible - from the Queen of Sheba's quest for wisdom to the faithful Ebed-Melech in Jeremiah. It is a reminder that while Judah's heart was narrowing, the Word was already reaching for the ends of the earth. The shadow behind this book is Manasseh. His fifty-five-year reign was not a mere slide into sin, but a violent overwriting of the Covenant. He did not just shut the Temple, as did Ahaz; he occupied it with idols, training a generation to live comfortably inside compromise and contradiction. Though his late repentance was real, he had already "filled Jerusalem with innocent blood," silencing the voices that refused to compromise. Zephaniah's own name - meaning “YHWH has hidden” - is a bridge across these dark years. He is the voice of the "hidden seed," the remnant God treasured during the long silence of the Manasseh era. The fact that the Book of the Law had to be "found" in the Temple is the ultimate indictment: the Word was functionally lost in a nation that only claimed to honor it. Zephaniah declares judgment as irreversible because compromise has hardened into identity. Judah's people convinced themselves that “the Lord will not do good, nor will he do ill” (Zeph. 1:12). They believed God had become a silent partner in His own universe, neither acting nor speaking decisively. Indifference had hardened into theology. Zephaniah announces "the day of the Lord" to shatter that illusion. Divine judgment is the public demonstration that history is not self-governing; God will intervene. Yet the call to "seek" remains open to the humble - those who let the Word judge them instead of editing the Word to match their preferences. Zephaniah's message speaks to our present as well as his own. Today's threat isn't atheism. It is Christian indifference in the face of compromise and the relocation of authority outside God's word. A community can retain sacred vocabulary and religious formalism while quietly shifting its trust to cultural approval and the word of man. When God's Word becomes negotiable, it is often not denied in theory, neutralized in practice. Renewal must begin where Josiah began: with the recovery of the Word as authoritative Truth. Zephaniah stands as a compact argument that divided allegiance is unsustainable, that compromise is apostasy, and that hope survives only where God's word is the believer's final Voice. For us, too, the Day of the LORD is imminent. Let us "set our house in order."

I just don't know who or what to believe anymore! Have you ever found yourself thinking or saying this out loud regarding what you encounter or social media. With advances in AI generated content and the ways in which we as individual users can create content on social media, those of us who are concerned about the accuracy of what we see oftentimes leaves us scratching our heads while muttering, “Is that true?” The reality is that we are living in a world where the prevalence of falsehood is on the rise, as well as the chances for each of us to be scammed or duped. A new report from the Pew Research Center tells us that a fifth of U.S. adults now regularly get their news on TikTok, a figure which is up sharply since 2020. In fact, forty-three percent of adults under the age of thirty say they regularly get their news from TikTok, which is up from nine percent in 2020. While we can't tell you where to go to find trusted truth online, we can tell you to beware, and to warn your kids to do the same.

Jesus enjoined them, “Watch out, guard against the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.” Mark 8:14–15Jesus and the disciples frequently traveled by boat, visiting many towns and villages along the Sea of Galilee. After a fruitful visit to the Gentile territory of the Decapolis, Jesus and His disciples crossed to Dalmanutha. Upon disembarking, some Pharisees, who had likely heard of His miraculous feeding of the 4,000, demanded a sign from Him. Jesus, deeply grieved by their lack of faith, sighed from the depths of His spirit, refused their request, and departed again by boat. It was during this boat ride that today's Gospel took place.Jesus' holy sorrow over the Pharisees' hardness of heart deeply affected Him. His grief was not one of self-pity over their rejection of Him but stemmed from His divine compassion. He felt the weight of their lack of faith and their refusal to embrace the truth of God's love. It was this profound sorrow that prompted Jesus to caution His disciples, saying, “Watch out, guard against the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.”“Leaven,” in this context, symbolizes a hidden yet pervasive influence that governed both the Pharisees and Herod. Just as a small amount of yeast permeates an entire batch of dough, causing it to rise, so too the destructive influence of the Pharisees and Herod spread through their actions and teachings, corrupting others. With His sorrowful encounter with the Pharisees fresh in mind, Jesus used the moment to warn His disciples not to allow such corrupting influences to take root in their own hearts.The Pharisees' hidden, pervasive, and destructive quality lay in their excessive focus on external observances of the Law and the traditions derived from it. Their rigid legalism blinded them to the true meaning of God's Law—mercy and the inner disposition of the heart—leading to their own spiritual ruin and to the misleading of others.Herod's “leaven” likely refers to a worldly mindset characterized by a relentless pursuit of power, wealth, and pleasure. Herod chose the fleeting allure of worldly things over God's eternal truths. Herod's pride and destructive behavior epitomize this mindset, which ultimately led him to have John the Baptist executed for courageously speaking the truth about Herod's adulterous relationship with his brother's wife, Herodias.Jesus' admonition to His disciples on the boat is not only a condemnation of the Pharisees' and Herod's sins but a warning about the influence such pervasive sins can have on them. Likewise, just as Jesus cautioned His disciples, so too does He caution us today: “Watch out” and “guard against” the influences that do not arise from God's saving Truth. In our world, it is essential to recognize how pervasive societal ideologies and moralities can subtly shape our thoughts and actions. By remaining vigilant and rooted in Christ, we must discern and reject the leaven of worldliness, hypocrisy, and pride, allowing God's divine light to guide our lives.Reflect today on the influences that shape your life. Do you spend countless hours on social media, browsing the Internet, or watching television? If so, take a moment to consider the hidden yet pervasive effects of the content you consume and discern if it is subtly leading you astray. The only true remedy against such worldly influences is found in prayer and the Word of God. The Gospel must permeate our minds and hearts, acting as leaven to transform us from within. This divine leaven is nourished through prayer, the Sacraments, and an ongoing commitment to the Gospel. Heed Jesus' warning, spoken to His disciples but intended for every generation: Remain vigilant. Guard your heart and mind, ensuring they are firmly rooted in God's saving grace. My grieving Lord, Your heart was filled with holy sorrow over the sins of the Pharisees and Herod, especially as You witnessed the harmful influence they had on others. Please grant me the gift of spiritual insight, so that I may recognize the influences that shape my thoughts and actions. May Your Word and Your Truth alone guide me, and may I become a witness to that Truth, serving as a holy influence for others. Monday February 16, 2026Last Week After EpiphanyToday's Episode As we come to the final week after Epiphany, today's readings draw our eyes to the kind of wisdom and humility that prepares us to see Christ clearly.In Proverbs 27:1-6, 10-12 we are reminded of the value of faithful friendship, wise foresight, and steady character. True wisdom is not loud or reactive—it is rooted, discerning, and unwilling to be stirred into chaos.In Philippians 2:1–13, Paul calls believers to unity shaped by humility, pointing us to Christ Himself—who emptied Himself, took the form of a servant, and humbled Himself to the point of death. Because of that obedience, God highly exalted Him. We are invited to reflect that same self-giving mind as we “work out” what God is already working within us.And in John 18:28–38, Jesus stands before Pilate—calm, composed, and unwavering. The true King faces political power without anxiety. When Pilate asks, “What is truth?” he is staring Truth in the face.This episode invites us to embrace humble strength—choosing wisdom over impulse, servanthood over self-assertion, and allegiance to the King whose kingdom is not of this world.

Everywhere he went, Jeremiah warned people that their land would be subjugated, their way of life would be destroyed, and that they would become slaves of a government they did not choose.Jeremiah is remembered today as “the weeping prophet.”He was earnest, sincere, and entirely correct, but no one wants to be told that they have an inescapable appointment with a dentist and a gastroenterologist to receive a simultaneous root canal and colonoscopy in the outdoors during a rainstorm.Jeremiah painted a dark sky without a single ray of sunlight shining through. This is why no one ever gave Jeremiah a microphone, an audience, and a big pile of money to be their guest speaker.Polyanna was 11 years old in 1913, and she still rides around on her adorable little pony radiating sunshine and rainbows everywhere she goes. Pollyanna tells everyone who will listen that a magical genie will give you whatever you want if you just smile and laugh and think happy thoughts.Pollyanna is even less popular than Jeremiah. I promise I'm not making this up.Google tells me that Jeremiah remains a popular name for boys, always ranked in the top 100. Pollyanna is not nearly so popular among girls. It currently ranks somewhere between number 8,284 and number 13,776.Jeremiah and Pollyanna became the topic of conversation while I was comparing notes with Ryan Deiss and Jet Eisenberg and Robert Grebe during lunch last week. We were trying to figure out why we were suddenly seeing a sharp uptick in public speaking requests.We all agreed that a general feeling of unrest is shining out of every television screen and blowing through the ductwork of every home in America.That's when Deiss said,“No one wants Jeremiah. No one wants Pollyanna. People are looking for someone who is aware of current difficulties, but who can also see a clear path forward.”It was one of those moments when everyone at the table instantly knew that Truth had been spoken.No one wants to hear the gloom and doom of Jeremiah right now. And no one wants to ride the pony or drink the sugarwater of Pollyanna.People are just looking for a promising path forward.My partner Todd Liles has been trying to tell me this for several months, but Ryan Deiss was able to condense it into a metaphor of paired opposites, the lightning bolt that is most likely to pierce my hard head and illuminate my mindMarcus Aurelius Antoninus was the last of the Five Good Emperors of Rome. Eighteen hundred years ago he wrote,“Never let the future disturb you. You will meet it, if you have to, with the same weapons of reason which today arm you against the present.”Lucius Annaeus Seneca was born in the same year that Jesus was born. Late in his life, Seneca said,“True happiness is to enjoy the present without anxious dependence on the future.”But Jesus had already said the same thing thirty years earlier during his famous Sermon on the Mount. Jesus was teaching us to live in the present when he said,“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”Do not fret about an imaginary future.You will deal with the actual future when it arrives.Roy H. Williams

Sometimes, it's the consequence of sin (Adam and Eve; Assyrian and Babylonian. exile); more often it's a call to faith (Abraham, Joseph, slavery in Egypt, David, the New Testament command to believers to live as exiles). In Jacob's case – and in ours – there's both. This message gives three expectations for exiles from Genesis 28.

“The great day of the Lord is near, near and hastening fast.” Zephaniah 1:14 Zephaniah speaks at the precise moment when Judah's long experiment with compromise reaches its breaking point. This is not a story of transferred allegiance, but of accommodation. Judah still carries the Lord's name and maintains His Temple, but they have woven other gods into the fabric of daily life. This is YHWH-plus religion. It presents itself as a sophisticated, tolerant "synthesis," but it is far more dangerous than honest paganism. Judah's elites swore by the LORD and by Milcom in the same breath (Zeph. 1:5), treating God's Word as negotiable opinion rather than final authority. Zephaniah begins with a rare four-generation genealogy, tracing his line back to King Hezekiah. As a royal cousin to King Josiah, he is a "Corrective Branch" of the family tree. While the ruling line under Manasseh and Amon sought power through foreign alliances, Zephaniah's branch had been preserving the "Unbroken Chain." Even his father's name, Cushi ("The Ethiopian"), hints at the persistent "Cushite" thread in the Bible - from the Queen of Sheba's quest for wisdom to the faithful Ebed-Melech in Jeremiah. It is a reminder that while Judah's heart was narrowing, the Word was already reaching for the ends of the earth. The shadow behind this book is Manasseh. His fifty-five-year reign was not a mere slide into sin, but a violent overwriting of the Covenant. He did not just shut the Temple, as did Ahaz; he occupied it with idols, training a generation to live comfortably inside compromise and contradiction. Though his late repentance was real, he had already "filled Jerusalem with innocent blood," silencing the voices that refused to compromise. Zephaniah's own name - meaning “YHWH has hidden” - is a bridge across these dark years. He is the voice of the "hidden seed," the remnant God treasured during the long silence of the Manasseh era. The fact that the Book of the Law had to be "found" in the Temple is the ultimate indictment: the Word was functionally lost in a nation that only claimed to honor it. Zephaniah declares judgment as irreversible because compromise has hardened into identity. Judah's people convinced themselves that “the Lord will not do good, nor will he do ill” (Zeph. 1:12). They believed God had become a silent partner in His own universe, neither acting nor speaking decisively. Indifference had hardened into theology. Zephaniah announces "the day of the Lord" to shatter that illusion. Divine judgment is the public demonstration that history is not self-governing; God will intervene. Yet the call to "seek" remains open to the humble - those who let the Word judge them instead of editing the Word to match their preferences. Zephaniah's message speaks to our present as well as his own. Today's threat isn't atheism. It is Christian indifference in the face of compromise and the relocation of authority outside God's word. A community can retain sacred vocabulary and religious formalism while quietly shifting its trust to cultural approval and the word of man. When God's Word becomes negotiable, it is often not denied in theory, neutralized in practice. Renewal must begin where Josiah began: with the recovery of the Word as authoritative Truth. Zephaniah stands as a compact argument that divided allegiance is unsustainable, that compromise is apostasy, and that hope survives only where God's word is the believer's final Voice. For us, too, the Day of the LORD is imminent. Let us "set our house in order."
