Bloody hell. If there is anyone who is entitled to go on a little light trauma induced shoplifting spree, it would be ACT MP Karen Chhour. For those who don't know her background, Karen grew up in the state care system. She was elected to parliament as an ACT Party MP in 2020 with the goal of reforming Oranga Tamariki, having seen rather more of it than most of us have. Before politics, she was self-employed in the New Zealand made clothing industry. She's a mother of four and she's lived on Auckland's North Shore for the past 30 years. So just the sort of person you'd like to see in Parliament: life experience, lived experience, a mum, firm stake in the future of the country for her children, self-employed, hard worker. Exactly the sort of person you'd like to see.   Well, we'd like to see. If you're a Māori Labour MP or a member of Te Pati Māori, oh no, you don't want Karen Chhour in Parliament. Because she might be Māori, but she's not the right sort of Māori, is she? For those people, it's not enough to whakapapa back. You have to be their sort of Māori. Which means that although we have a record number of Māori who have been elected to this Parliament on their merits, most of them got there because they were the best person for the job. There are 33 MPs of Māori descent across all of the six parties. Nine in Labour. Six in Te Pati Māori, six in the Greens, five in National, four in New Zealand First, three in ACT.  You would have to say that's a really good representation across all political viewpoints. But no. To the ones on the left, the ones on the right of the political spectrum do not count. They are simply not the right sort of Māori. And no one, it appears, is more wrong than Karen Chhour.   Former Labour Deputy Leader, the late and unlamented Kelvin Davis said in 2022, Chhour needs to leave her “Pākehā world” and stop looking at the world through a “vanilla lens”. Willie Jackson urged her to cross the bridge, to come over from the Pākehā to the Māori. Labour MP Willow Jean Prime called her a “sellout” during the first reading of the Oranga Tamariki Amendment bill. A comment on social media from Te Pati Māori said Chhour had a “disconnection and disdain for her people”. “If it was done right, she would have been raised mildly, should have been raised being connected to her whakapapa and having a knowingness of her Māori tongue. Instead, she was raised Pākehā with a disconnection and disdain for her people”. “Karen and her experience is exactly why we need Section 7 AA”. Later, a Te Pati Māori MP said Chhour had been made a puppet by her party. What a pack of righteous offensive bigots. No wonder Karen Chhour is feeling under siege.   “I can't control what the public is saying about my personal traits around being Māori enough or not being the right kind of traumatised person. Hearing it from other MP's that shouldn't be allowed. I'm still a person. I'm still a person and I feel like I'm getting that stripped away from me day by day in this place. I've had enough. I asked for an apology, that's all I wanted, and I didn't get one, and that is so disrespectful.”  Yeah, it is. It's disrespectful and it's offensive. And will Speaker of the House Gerry Brownlee do anything about it? Nope. He's not going to go down as one of the all-time greats, is he? ACT Party leader David Seymour says the speaker appears to be giving a green light to racial harassment in Parliament.   So what is Māori enough? Is Dr. Shane Reti Māori enough? Good luck telling Shane Jones he's not Māori enough. James Meager gave a great maiden speech... oh, he's National, so he probably doesn't count. He is Māori, but on the right of the political spectrum, so probably not Māori enough. He said the left do not own Māori. They don't own the poor and they don't own the workers. No party and no ideology has a right to claim ownership over anything or anyone, and Amen to that, James.   I'm not Māori enough to say what is Māori and what is not. I have never in the time I've read about the history of this country known all Māori to think the same way. Iwi aren't united in their views, hapu aren't united, and people within hapu aren't united in their views. People and families aren't united in their views. Who the hell are Te Pati Māori and those sanctimonious mealy-mouthed arses on the left to decide what it is to be Māori and whether you're Māori enough? Surely being Māori enough is having the confidence to know who you are, to decide how you want to vote, to decide which ideology you best think will improve the lot of your people, which is why you entered Parliament. How very bloody dare they. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Did you see the reaction to Donald Trump's comments yesterday?  This is what he said about Kamala Harris' race: "She was Indian all the way and then all of a sudden she made a turn and she became a black person."  What?  The media rightly ran the story, and it was a big deal.  Isn't questioning someone's race exactly what Rawiri Waititi did to Karen Chhour?  Isn't that exactly what he did the other day in parliament when he asked what blood quantum are you? Couldn't the same be said of Kelvin Davis saying that Karen Chhour lives in a Pakeha world?  She's Māori by the way. And what about Te Pāti Māori? They said Karen Shaw should have been raised by Māori caregivers instead of Pakeha ones. And claimed that she had disdain for Māori, for her people. This week they said she's just a puppet of her party and she was basically left in tears in the hallway to ThreeNews.  "I'm still a person. I'm still a person and I feel like I'm getting that stripped away from me day by day in this place, I've had enough.”  No apologies from Te Pāti Māori, no accountability.   I just think it's sad. Put the politics to one side for a second, there's a woman crying in a hallway. Wouldn't you want to just say sorry, if what I had said had made you feel that way?  Karen Chhour is not a bad person, you might disagree with their policies, sure, but also, her treatment in the media this week. I think she's been interrogated more about who bullied her than Julie Anne Genter ever was about actually bullying. It's a double standard. No wonder she's battling and struggling.   Then Chippy turns around and says she's not fit to be a minister. Gaslighting much.  Karen Chhour will be fine. She's a very strong individual.  I guess it just annoys me because if the shoe was on the other foot, imagine, just imagine. And where's the Human Rights Commission? Where's their statement on this stuff?  There'll be attack dogs on social media. You can, you can just imagine how it would play out if the shoe was on the other foot.  I say, keep doing what you're doing. Karen Chhour, you're hard working, you're conscientious, and you can rise above it. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Stuart Nash: Former Police Minister says Hipkins "misjudged" the Criminal Proceeds Act reformations

Stuart Nash has hit out at his former Labour colleagues over changes to laws targeting gangs he wanted to introduce, but which others wouldn't progress due to fears they would unfairly target Māori. Last year the Labour government changed the Criminal Proceeds (Recovery) Act to allow police to seize gang leaders' property, such as cars and bikes, if valued over $30,000 and if it could not be proven they were paid for legitimately.  But then-police minister Nash wanted the threshold lowered to $0 - a plan he says was dashed by Labour's Minister of Justice Kiri Allan over concerns it would hurt Māori and would contravene the Bill of Rights.  Speaking to Newstalk ZB's Mike Hosking this morning, Nash hit out again at Allan, saying at the time his view was “pull your bloody head in”.  He strongly denied that such a move was aimed at or would hurt Māori, saying police were “race-agnostic” when it came to dealing with gangs.  Nash told Hosking this morning the conversation was not held in Cabinet - which would make it confidential - but was a conversation he had as soon as he became Police Minister.  He believed $30,000 was too high a threshold because “you can engineer a sale where you can buy a Harley for under $30,000”.  Nash - who took over as Police Minister from Chris Hipkins when the latter became Prime Minister - said the first thing he did in the role was talk to Hipkins about dropping the seizure limit to $0.  “He said, ‘Well, see if you can get it past Kiri [Allan]. And I went to Kiri and said this is what I want to do. And she said ‘No, we need to leave it at $30,000.'”  Nash then asked to take the issue to Cabinet.  “And she said ‘No, this is what it's going to be.' She obviously went to Hipkins and Hipkins said, ‘Okay, we're going to leave it at $30,000′. Why? Because it's anti-Māori. Bulls***.”  Former Justice Minister Kiri Allan dismissed Stuart Nash's desire to crackdown on gangs, Nash says. Photo / Mark Mitchell  Nash claimed police were “race-agnostic” when it came to gangs.  “It doesn't matter if they're Māori, European, Chinese, Indian, what ethnicity - a gang member is a gang member is a gang member and they need to be held to account.”  Nash said the harm gangs perpetrated across communities, including destroying communities through methamphetamine, meant “we need to go really hard” on them.  “I think the men and women in our [police] service do an absolutely brilliant job. But we, as politicians, have got to give them the tools to do this.”  Asked by Hosking if it was fair to say the incident showed a strong Māori caucus in Labour who were protecting “Māori behaviour and Māori issues”, Nash said that was not a fair statement.  He believed Kelvin Davis - who is Māori - would have backed him if the issue had been taken to Cabinet.  Asked if the spat showed Hipkins was a weak leader, Nash said he believed “in this case, he got it wrong”.  “I think he misjudged New Zealanders' appetite to really go incredibly hard against the gangs.”  Labour had done some good things - “we changed the firearms rules, actually the bikes that were crushed over the weekend were crushed under Labour legislation...but we need to go harder”.  Nash said Labour would need to position itself as tough on gangs if it had any hope of winning the next election.  Allan said she did not want to comment on Nash's version of events.  “Let me put it this way. I wouldn't waste my time or energy responding to a person seeking relevance and attention by misrepresenting facts. If this is how he wants to get into the media, all power to him.”  -NZ Herald LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Labour Party leader Chris Hipkins is due to begin the year in opposition hot on the heels of attending his predecessor's lavish wedding over the weekend. Hipkins was among the many famous faces at Dame Jacinda Ardern and Clarke Gayford's Hawke's Bay wedding over the weekend. The former Prime Minister spoke to Newstalk ZB this morning, saying the wedding was “lovely”. Chris Hipkins and Toni Grace seen leaving their motel the day after Jacinda Ardern's wedding. Photo / George Heard “Aside from a few hiccups along the way, they got the opportunity to enjoy their wedding in relative peace and privacy and I think that's a lovely thing,” Hipkins said. A car doing a burnout across the river from the wedding venue was photographed by a Hawke's Bay Today photographer at the time the vows were being exchanged, and a small group of anti-vax protesters were spoken to by police earlier in the day. A burnout pulled over the other side of the Tukituki River from Craggy Range, just as Jacinda Ardern and Clarke Gayword wed. Photo / Connull Lang Ardern and her TV host partner of almost 10 years began married life at the exclusive Craggy Range winery on the outskirts of Havelock North, where they exchanged vows before a reception full of laughter, cheering and dancing. Hipkins looked relaxed and tanned, dressed in shorts, a T-shirt and sunglasses, as he was leaving the Village Motel in Havelock North with partner Toni Grace. He earlier told the Herald that the event was “lovely” and that he had also taken advantage of the opportunity to indulge in more than a few of his beloved paua and snapper sausage rolls while at the wedding. She gave a special shout-out to Craggy Range and head chef Casey McDonald, who was just about to serve up the main course, before spending roughly a minute talking about her “best friend” and now husband. The wedding was officiated by the couple's friend and former Deputy Prime Minister Grant Robertson. The couple are now heading away on a family holiday. The wedding was originally set to take place in 2022 but was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Dame Jacinda Ardern and Clarke Gayford pictured at their wedding. Official images released by the couple yesterday evening showed a smiling Ardern in the ivory sleeveless, cowl-neck halter gown featuring a high neckline, cinched waist and low back. The former PM also wore a long tulle veil, which was clipped into a chignon up-do, created by hairdresser Tane Tomoana who has previously worked on looks for Ardern. Two buses - including one featuring Hipkins and Grace, former speaker of the House and ex-veteran MP Sir Trevor Mallard and former minister Megan Woods - took some guests to the wedding. Musicians Marlon Williams, Hollie Smith (Gayford's ex-partner) and MC Tali were also spotted among guests. Last Monday when I was hosting afternoon talkback I got a pithy little text that said "We've got rid of the clownshow and here comes the 3-ring circus."  It's pretty funny because it's pretty true and it's happened.  The counting of the special votes has confirmed that Luxon and Seymour need Winston and as we all know Seymour and Peters are not BEST friends. Critics warn of a conservative coalition of chaos. That won't be so but only if it's a coalition of compromise. It could be worse. Labour, the Greens, New Zealand First and Te Pāti Māori together have 63 seats. In a parliament of 123, that means they could have theoretically stolen the election. So thank Chris Hipkins for ruling Winston Peters out before the election.  Now the horse-trading begins and the fight for influence between ACT and New Zealand First and the question exists as to who National will owe more to. The larger party, ACT, or the smaller party, New Zealand First, that gives them the final vital votes to form the government.  It's the age-old question of coalitions — the saga of the tail and the dog.  Meanwhile, the special votes have no good news for Labour. The final upshot is that just 26.9 per cent of New Zealand voted for the party. A sad result after over 50 per cent supported the party a short 3 years ago.  The ultimate sign of the disaffection is Mt Albert where Helen White has held on but with an even smaller majority than on election night. In 2020 the majority was 20 thousand votes. Now it's just 20. A brutal swing which shows the verdict on the party, the policies and the candidate. There is no way that Helen can continue to say she's done well.  And despite all the concessions Labour made to their Māori caucus and the policies that gave many New Zealanders conniptions, Māori have turned around and given their seats to Te Pāti Māori. The ultimate snub was to Labour's deputy leader Kelvin Davis, who has lost his seat. And if he's true to his word then he'll have to resign. Which can I say might be a blessing for Labour as it tries to rebuild.  So here we are with a parliament of 122 seats about to become 123 under the bizarre vagaries of MMP. Certainly, if we had First past the Post this would have been a more clearcut process of government formation. But we don't.  We have what we have and it's now over to our political leaders to show the maturity to stitch together a stable government to lead us through a period of time that becomes more complicated as time goes by. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Labour's Corrections Spokesperson is unfazed by Government's move to drop its prison population reduction target.   The party has scrapped its 2017 promise to bring numbers down by 30% within 15 years.  Kelvin Davis told Mike Hosking that they were facing a prison capacity crisis in 2017, but that's changed.   He says re-sentencing rates after 12 months have dropped 11% since 2017, showing there's been a number of success stories.  Davis is fairly relaxed about the Government's position on prison numbers.  LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Heather du Plessis-Allan: Labour's finally admitted reducing prison populations was a bad idea

Chris Hipkins has just confirmed Labour is dropping its plan to get people out of jails. When they first took over six years ago, Labour set a target of reducing the prison population by 30 percent in 15 years. That target is now gone. Hipkins was asked about it today, and says there is no target for the next term. This is massive, because Labour was celebrated for this. On November 29, 2018, there was a huge write up in the Guardian about how great Kelvin Davis was. “The man on a mission to get New Zealand's Māori out of prison”- said the headline  Labour's never backed down from this target, never admitted this was a mistake. As crime rose, as our concern over crime rose, as people with ankle bracelets on committed crimes- Labour stood by this.  And now they've backed down today. This is an admission that it was a bad idea, because of course it is. How many crimes do we now have to point to where offenders have ankle bracelets on? They've already got in some sort of trouble, but they're out in the community instead of in jail. The young guy who shot up the construction site in Auckland earlier this year? He was at home with an ankle bracelet on, when he should've been in jail. His probation officer assessed that his risk of causing harm to other people because of the violent nature of his offending was high.  The guy arrested in connection with the shooting in the park across the road from a family home in Point England, Auckland? He had an ankle bracelet on. The guy with Waikato tattooed across his face who police are currently chasing, who they say is too dangerous for any of us to go anywhere near- he is accused of murdering someone with a knife and he was out with an ankle bracelet on. Labour can't say that they're dropping the target because job done- because it's not.  At last count, prison population is only down 18 percent, that's just over half of where they were aiming. The only reason they've dropped this is because it's a failure. It's made our country less safe, voters hate it, and they're about to lose an election for doing things like this to New Zealand.  LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

So, Tuesday afternoon I get a text about someone wanting coming on the show I get a lot of texts about coming on the show but this one was from Stuart Nash. He wonders why I haven't called to talk to him about his stats on arrests of gang members. It's a good news story, he says. I think that's fair enough, we give the Government a good session of accountability each day. No one holds them to account more than us. To his credit, Nash is a regular listener and despite the fact he personally takes a fair bit of heat on this programme, he's never run for the hills like some did. I want to talk to him about the retail crime stats. That's how these things work - he wants on, I see an opportunity to get a few answers about other matters, we set it up. That, sadly, will be the last time he appears here as Minister of Police and if he could have his time again, would he text me wanting on the program? Part of his downfall is his desire to show he is doing the right thing. And that is the sad part about yesterday. His heart and intention are in the right place. The original reason we got him on this show years ago on a Wednesday was because we saw him as a centrist. In a party of crazed ideologues, he was comparatively normal. And on matters like police there is no doubt he is passionate about it and fully understood the trouble his Government is in with crime. All he could ever end up saying though was that we put 1400 more cops on the beat. Would he personally have liked to have done more and been tougher? No doubt. But in a Government like this with your Kelvin Davis' and Andrew Little's, you're hamstrung. So, by default he turns up here and wants to talk tough. He wants to be seen as, at least, defending his corner. I ask him about charges not leading to judicial consequences and whether the judiciary is the issue. I ask that for very deliberate, and fairly obvious, reasons. Often I can guess the answer but I hope for something a bit illuminating. Yesterday we got it. That, for all the consequences that came out of it, is the real world. Nash was being honest - of course he calls Andrew Coster. Wouldn't you? Aren't you frustrated at judges that are soft? Police oppose bail to no effect, sometimes they don't oppose bail, and criminals walk and thumb their noses. Yes, to do what he did is, of course, against the rules. And yes, he should have engaged his brain before he spouted off here. But you saw the real frustration of a minister not getting what he needs to get in an election year where crime is out of control. Say what you want about Stuart, but of all the people they could have lost yesterday he was far from the worst of them. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
