A former medic in the Canadian Armed Forces, a civilian paramedic, and a podcaster extraordinaire are all phrases that accurately describe author Matthew Heneghan. With PTSD awareness day coming up on June 27, we thought it fitting we talk with this incredibly talented writer who, incidentally, also deals with symptoms related to post-traumatic stress.. In episode 3, we learn what prompted Matt to enter rehab right after the acceptance of his story "Sunburn" into the anthology Brainstorm Revolution. We also learn what crazy gift his friend Simon sent him while he was on the "inside." Be sure to read Matt's blog at www.amedicsmind.com. You can also pre-order his book, A Medic's Mind on Indigo.ca.
On this, the 100th episode of A Medic's Mind, I have my good friend and publisher, Heather Down on the podcast to speak about Brainstorm Revolution, my time in Bellwood and much more. Welcome to "Voices for Change 2.0" Co-Host's Rebecca and Joe Lombardo have been happily married for 15 years. At age 19, Rebecca was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and struggles with mental illness daily. In 2013, she survived a suicide attempt. As she recovered, she started a blog detailing her struggles. Eventually that blog was turned into a book called It’s Not Your Journey and is now available on Amazon.com. This Saturday we're featuring Natalie Harris an advocate, author, and public speaker. She is the founder of Brainstorm Revolution, a nonprofit. Rebecca is now an advocate for mental health as well as a best-selling author and international blogger. Joe is also an advocate for mental health and an accomplished musician. Together they hope to provide people with the point of view of not only the person with mental illness but also the spouse and caregiver.
