For several years I was focusing heavily on the relationship between copper and iron while neglecting and even demonizing zinc. Given that our body stores a much higher concentration of zinc than copper, that was not a wise approach. Over the years I have learned that even in the case of a copper deficiency, one should still supplement zinc in addition to copper, and the clinical research clearly proves this. It is very easy to get caught in the anti-supplement fear campaigns that big influencers spread and I have since repented for my sins in this regard. In this episode I share my experience taking high dose zinc for the past few years and the copper deficiency symptoms I have noticed recently, specifically in relationship to ultraviolet light exposure from sunlight. On day one of supplementing copper again I noticed an increased resilience to sun exposure and less of a burning sensation being outside in the mid-day summer sun. I break down the science of different types of melanin, the exact biochemical processses involved in copper supporting melanin production, what melanin does after it absorbs UV light, what other nutrients we should be supplementing to protect ourselves from sunburn and skin photoaging, the complexity of the zinc/copper ratio and where I stand with it, how you can diagnose yourself for deficiencies using symptoms instead of blood tests, and more. When people ask about getting sick on a cruise ship, they're often worried about norovirus. But what happens if you catch a nasty cold, sprain your ankle, or (even worse) have a serious medical emergency like a heart attack? Rest assured, because cruise ships are well prepared. Are there doctors on cruise ships? Of course! Cruise ships will always have at least one doctor along with a staff of nurses. Larger ships will have more personnel with larger infirmaries. What kind of medications do they have? If you you're looking for aspirin, seasickness meds or other basic over-the-counter meds, you probably can skip the a trip the infirmary and just buy them at the ship's store. If you need prescription meds, medical facilities on cruise ships will have drugs on hand to treat infectious diseases like the flu and norovirus, problems with of the eyes, ear, nose and throat, and a variety of gastrointestinal and respiratory issues.

Sunburns aren't just about forgetting your sunscreen—they're often the result of deeper imbalances rooted in what you're eating, how your cells are built, and whether your body is equipped to handle the heat. In this episode of the Nutritional Therapy and Wellness Podcast, Jamie Belz unpacks the science behind sunburn, seed oils, and vitamin D deficiency—and how what you eat may be making your skin more vulnerable to UV damage. You'll learn how omega-6 PUFAs (polyunsaturated fatty acids) from common seed oils get embedded in your skin's cell membranes and oxidize under sunlight, leading to inflammation, skin damage, and slower healing. Jamie breaks down how to build true sun resilience using the Foundations of Health—including nutrient-dense fats, zinc, vitamin C, magnesium, and functional sun exposure strategies. You'll walk away with a fresh perspective on: Why French fries and chips might be making you burn faster How to ditch toxic sunscreen without sacrificing protection The critical role of vitamin D synthesis and how to support it safely How to balance omega-6 and omega-3 fats for better skin and lower inflammation What your cell membranes are really made of—and how to nourish them naturally Sunshine doesn't just make vitamin D—it makes you happy. And it might just save your skin, if you support it from within. The Chartered Institute of Horticulture recently published the results of its survey into rates of melanoma among horticulturists and the alarming but perhaps not unsurprising results showed one in eight of the 700 respondents said they had been diagnosed with some form of skin cancer. HortWeek wanted to lend it's voice to its campaign and invited the CIH's Jason Daff, Susanna Daniels from Melanoma Focus and Andrew Poole, farmer and agronomist and skin cancer survivor, to talk about the findings of the report, and how employers can support workers within the horticulture sector to take simple precautions to protect themselves from sun damage and prevent skin cancer.Jason gives an overview of the reports findings, one of the most striking of which was that men are almost twice as likely to have been diagnosed with skin cancer compared to women, perhaps due to the presence of sun protection in some women's skincare products, but also perhaps, Andrew speculates, due to a more 'macho' attitude and a reticence among men when it comes to looking after their skin. As Andrew says:"When I was a lot younger, it was a cavalier attitude to go out and it was almost a badge of honour to be burnt."I had the attitude, well I work outside...my life is outside, I'm gonna be protected, my skin has built up a resistance, I'll be fine."But clearly not, it's caught up with me later in life."Susanna outlines best practice on choosing and applying suncream - crucially not forgetting the tops of the ears - and explains how each incidence of sun burn can drastically increase the probability of a person developing skin cancer in their lifetime. She also highlights the responsibility employers have to provide suncream, argues that it should be regarded as PPE for outdoor workers, and to that end, CIH is lobbying the UK Government to make it exempt from VAT.For more information on melanoma in the workplace, how employers can help educate and protect employees resources and much more, visit https://melanomafocus.org/. Send us a textWe're deep into classics season, with Paris-Roubaix looming on the horizon, so this week's episode of the road.cc Podcast pays homage to cycling's biggest one-day events. In part two, double Olympic champion Kristen Faulkner joins us from her altitude training camp in Sierra Nevada, as she prepares for the upcoming Ardennes classics following a turbulent start to the season marred by the concussion she suffered in a training crash in December. The EF Education-Oatly leader chats about that mad week in Paris last summer, which saw her become the first American women to win gold medals in two different disciplines at the same Olympics, her plans for 2025, her outsider's status within the peloton, and why, despite women's cycling progressing rapidly in recent years, the sport has to acknowledge “how far there is to go”. And first up, Emily casts her eye over the cobbled classics season so far, and Ryan recaps an eventful, often chaotic day on the Oude Kwaremont at last weekend's Tour of Flanders, reflecting on why the Ronde means so much not just to Belgium, but to cycling in general.Oh, and we announce the winner of our coveted Episode 100 Jeremy Vine competition…
