Sunburn feels like an inconvenience until you connect it to the cancer statistics. Melanoma is the fifth most common cancer in the UK, and Susanna Daniels, CEO of Melanoma Focus, joins us to explain why a “just a mole” mindset is risky, and why early action can be life-saving. We talk plainly about what melanoma is, how UV damage builds up over time, and why noticing a new or changing mole, or something that simply looks odd is the moment to contact your GP.We also bring it back to farm life. Outdoor work in agriculture and horticulture means higher exposure, and Susanna shares survey findings showing sunburn is far more common in the sector than in the general public. We dig into the culture piece too, especially why men often skip sunscreen, and how employers can treat sun protection as a health and safety control by providing sunscreen and making reapplication normal on busy days. You'll come away with practical guidance you can use straight away: the expanded Slip Slop Slap message (plus shade and sunglasses), how to use the UV index (protect when it is 3 or above), what “broad spectrum” really means, and what to look for on the bottle (SPF 30+ and a high UVA star rating). We also tackle vitamin D without turning sun exposure into a false excuse, and we finish with a clear reminder that nearly nine in ten melanomas are preventable.Download and share Melanoma Focus' agricultural and horticulture assets: Agricultural communications ToolkitThis was recorded in January 2026, and all information was correct at the time of recording.Subscribe for more UK dairy and farming conversations, share this with someone who works outdoors, and leave us a review so more people hear the message.Send us Fan MailFor more information about our podcast visit www.chewinthecud.com/podcast or follow us on Instagram @chewinthecudpodcast. Movie reviews number sixty. Seven films to review today so let's get goin.
1. (Deadhead Miles1972)
Terrence Malick is the writer here and this is an early work of his. Alan Arkin is here in the starring role along with support from the butler from the Jeffersons, Doc Hopper from the Muppet movie, and Jaws from the Bond movies. The film cinematically answers the burning question, “Did they ever make a more ethereal stream of of consciousness Trucker movie?”
2. (The Execution of private Slovik 1974) This is a heavy made for tv based on the real story of Eddie getting executed for desertion 1945 by firing squad. 49 others were sentenced to death for desertion in that war but all were commuted except for Slovik, apparently to send a message, but then they covered it up. Martin Sheen, Mariclare Costello, and about a baker's dozen of recognizable characters from the time appear in this one. What else to say except maybe strap in fam.
3. (My Father's house 1975)
Spiderman's Uncle, the rad guy from the Music Man, Mrs Peacock from Clue, and Rosemary Forsyth star in this thoughtful made for tv movie about a dad recovering from a heart attack who is thinking about life and his dad.
4. (The Grateful Dead Movie 1977) I think I liked this more than the others here. We all don't dig the Grateful Dead much but Agree that the story is very interesting. It could have been more coherent but as Jerry himself said “We just keep trying to describe the Indescribable.”
5. (Spectre 1977) Here we have another Gene Roddenberry tv movie starring Robert Culp and Gig Young. The lil promo film we saw about this says that it's trying to cash in on the Exorcist dollar, but this is waaaaaaay more bizarre, is it good though?
6. (Players 1979) Got a bootleg of this and for a 70's movie completionist, it is fun for me to see Ali MacGraw, Maximilan Schell, Steve Guttenberg, and Melissa Prophet in this rather bad massive flop of a movie about Tennis, kinda.
7. (Sunburn 1979) The Plastic Surgeon's assistant from Logan's Run, The guy who made the worst writing studio for Carol Burnett in their garage in The grass is always greener over the Septic tank, the guy who gives grandpa Wookie space porn in the Star Wars holiday special, Edith Keeler from Star Trek, the Boss of Magnum P.I., and the Baroness from the Sound of Music, are all here in this, so it's just got to be the best thing ever, we'll see. Thanks film friends for listening, please consider writing a review, it helps a lot.

Summer is fun however it's good to remember how to stay safe when it comes to things like sun, food, insects, and alcohol. Here's what to watch out for and how to stay safe over the holidays. The number one thing to think about the sun – it makes us feel good but can cause harm! Sunburn sets us up for skin cancer. Be especially careful with children! Use SPF 30+ sunscreen, reapply every 2–3 hours and after swimming. Wear hats, sunglasses, and protective clothing. Remember: UV is highest between 10am and 4pm. Stay hydrated. Heat exhaustion and heatstroke can develop quickly, especially in the elderly and small children. Keep food safe especially in the heat We increase the risk of food poisoning over summer due to the heat, which encourages bacteria. Keep food cold and covered – use chilly bins/ice packs. Follow the 2-hour rule – avoid leaving food out in heat for more than 2 hours Wash hands and utensils to prevent spread of germs. Cook meats thoroughly, especially poultry and BBQ foods. Avoid cutting up meat/chicken on the same board as salad vegetables. Watch for signs of food poisoning: nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, fever – see your doctor. Watch out for insects, especially mosquitoes and sandflies Avoid getting bitten – can be itchy and painful. Use insect repellent in areas with sandflies or mosquitos and wear long sleeves/pants in bushy areas. Watch out for allergic reactions: red inflamed skin around a bite, can be very itchy. May need to see your pharmacist or doctor for treatment: anti-itch cream, antihistamines. Always drink alcohol in moderation Alcohol increases dehydration. A good tip is to alternate drinks with water. Avoid swimming, boating, or driving under the influence: impaired judgement raises accident risk. Eat before and while drinking – pace yourself. Watch for the heat and alcohol combination leading to faster exhaustion. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The author and actor thinks summer in Australia is done bigger, better and weirder than anywhere else. For three months of the year, life slows down and heats up. But for William, summer in Australia is an imperfect paradise where more than anything, people yearn to connect.Summer can be a hellish time in Australia, where temperatures soar and fires can turn bush and buildings to rubble in an instant. But despite the challenges, William McInnes looks upon this time of year with great affection and nostalgia.Growing up in Redcliffe, Queensland, William remembers the heat that burnt through his thongs, the strange ritual of assembling a plastic European Christmas tree on a 40-degree day, and simple moments in the sun like jumping off his dad's shoulders into the cool coastal water.Every summer connects William with his family, his childhood and his past, just like millions of other Australians on riverbanks and beaches around the country. It's a Scorcher: Tales of the Australian Summer is published by Hachette. This episode of Conversations explores seasons, heat, bushfires, Koolewong, weather forecast, drought, BOM, swimming, tennis, Australian Open, Boxing Day Test, Cricket, Ashes, book, memoir, writing, Australiana, Kitsch, climate change, nostalgia, family time, Christmas, holidays, New Year, how to survive the holidays, road trips, vacation, bikini, swimmers, togs, school holidays, parents. To binge even more great episodes of the Conversations podcast with Richard Fidler and Sarah Kanowski go the ABC listen app (Australia) or wherever you get your podcasts. Dr. Glen Jeffery, PhD, is a professor of neuroscience at University College London and a leading expert on how different colors (wavelengths) of light impact cellular, organ and overall health. He explains that long-wavelength light (red, near-infrared and infrared) can enter the body and brain to enhance mitochondrial function and thereby improve metabolism, eyesight, blood glucose regulation, mood, hormones and more. We also discuss how short-wavelength light from LED bulbs can impair mitochondrial health and why balanced, full-spectrum light is essential for health. Dr. Jeffery shares simple yet powerful ways to use natural and artificial light sources to enhance your metabolic function, eyesight and longevity. The Bold Move: Why a Bestselling Author Swapped 'Sweet' Fiction for Gritty Irish Gothic.

The challenge every successful debut author faces is the pressure to repeat themselves. When we recently sat down with acclaimed Irish author Chloe Michelle Howarth (Author of the Nero-shortlisted Sunburn), we learned why she made the bold choice to defy expectations and pivot her career completely. Her new book, Heap Earth Upon It, is a striking departure: a dark, 1960s-set Gothic novel miles away from the contemporary, coming-of-age tone of her debut. This article breaks down the three most valuable insights Chloe shared on creative fulfillment, editing mastery, and writing with purpose.1. Creative Fulfillment Demands a Genre Pivot.Chloe's first novel, Sunburn, was a critical and commercial success, leading to an obvious question: why not write Sunburn 2?Chloe's answer was pure creative drive. She admitted that she chose the complete opposite direction—a dark, gritty 1960s Gothic—simply because she felt she had to prove to herself that she could do something else. The setting of the new novel was key: a small, quiet, rural village in the depths of January. As Chloe explained, that atmospheric choice naturally lends itself to the Gothic, demanding new language, new emotions, and a different type of bite than her previous work. For writers struggling with a second project, her advice is clear: do what excites you, not what you think the audience (or publisher) expects.2. The Hardest, Most Necessary Editing Lesson.Whether you are writing a sweet romance or a haunting Gothic novel, this single piece of editorial advice, which Chloe received from her agent, is a game-changer: “Less can be more.”Chloe confessed that she loves “over-the-top, very dramatic, detailed prose,” often describing a statement in five different ways. She was challenged to find where it was necessary to be indulgent and where it was simply not serving the story. The takeaway here for any author is to learn how to refine the work. You must be willing to let go of the dramatic flair you love if a concise sentence serves the story better. Her willingness to be open to this professional critique was ultimately what changed her initial manuscript into the published novel.3. Writing a Legacy: Rural Queerness.Perhaps the most impactful takeaway from our conversation was Chloe's dedication to defining her own writing legacy. When asked what she hopes her work will be remembered for, she emphasized her focus on rural Irish queerness. As she notes, queer experiences are far more often depicted in urban spaces, making her depiction of a nuanced, isolated existence in a smaller community a vital counter-narrative.Her advice for writers aiming to be more inclusive? Write from a genuine place. Don't feel the need to crowbar diverse characters in to “tick a box.” Instead, write the character as a full person first, and then let their specific experience be a secondary, natural layer, rather than the defining element. You can dive into the full conversation with Chloe Michelle Howarth, including her thoughts on balancing multiple narrative viewpoints, her unorganised “pantser” process, and her essential book recommendation, by watching the full video below:WATCH THE FULL INTERVIEW OR LISTEN ON YOUR FAVOURITE PODCAST PLATFORM: Chloe Michelle Howarth on Writing Irish Gothic Fiction & Her Queer Rural Legacy (HEAP EARTH UPON IT & SUNBURN)Join our brand new community on our Stanstore! EPISODE 103 - “ELEANOR PARKER: CLASSIC CINEMA STAR OF THE MONTH” - 9/01/25 This week, we celebrate our Star of the Month: the extraordinary ELEANOR PARKER. Known as “the woman of a thousand faces,” Parker built a remarkable career defined by range, subtlety, and strength. From her Oscar-nominated turn as a wrongly imprisoned woman in Caged, to her quietly powerful presence as the Baroness in The Sound of Music, she consistently defied typecasting and brought nuance to every role. But behind the glamour was a private, fiercely independent woman whose legacy has too often been overlooked in Hollywood history. Join us as we dive deep into the life, career, and enduring mystique of Eleanor Parker—a star who truly deserves to be remembered. Your Sunburn Could be a Copper Deficiency

Divine Superconductor Radio

For several years I was focusing heavily on the relationship between copper and iron while neglecting and even demonizing zinc. Given that our body stores a much higher concentration of zinc than copper, that was not a wise approach. Over the years I have learned that even in the case of a copper deficiency, one should still supplement zinc in addition to copper, and the clinical research clearly proves this. It is very easy to get caught in the anti-supplement fear campaigns that big influencers spread and I have since repented for my sins in this regard. In this episode I share my experience taking high dose zinc for the past few years and the copper deficiency symptoms I have noticed recently, specifically in relationship to ultraviolet light exposure from sunlight. On day one of supplementing copper again I noticed an increased resilience to sun exposure and less of a burning sensation being outside in the mid-day summer sun. I break down the science of different types of melanin, the exact biochemical processses involved in copper supporting melanin production, what melanin does after it absorbs UV light, what other nutrients we should be supplementing to protect ourselves from sunburn and skin photoaging, the complexity of the zinc/copper ratio and where I stand with it, how you can diagnose yourself for deficiencies using symptoms instead of blood tests, and more.
