As summer approaches, it's crucial to understand how to protect yourself from harmful UV rays that can lead to skin cancer, a condition that affects one in five Americans in their lifetime.• One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime• Seek shade between 10am-2pm when the sun's rays are strongest• Wear protective clothing including lightweight long sleeves, pants, and wide-brimmed hats• Choose broad-spectrum, SPF 30+ water-resistant sunscreen• Apply one ounce (a shot glass amount) to cover an adult body• Reapply sunscreen every two hours or after swimming/sweating• SPF 30 blocks 97% of UVB rays, but no sunscreen blocks 100% of rays• Babies under six months should avoid sun exposure completely• For sunburns: stay indoors, keep skin moisturized, drink extra water, and don't pop blistersShare this episode with anyone who spends time in the sun. In addition, though, about 100 thousand news cases of melanoma are diagnosed each year, making skin cancer the most common cancer in the US. Send us a textWe're deep into classics season, with Paris-Roubaix looming on the horizon, so this week's episode of the road.cc Podcast pays homage to cycling's biggest one-day events. In part two, double Olympic champion Kristen Faulkner joins us from her altitude training camp in Sierra Nevada, as she prepares for the upcoming Ardennes classics following a turbulent start to the season marred by the concussion she suffered in a training crash in December. The EF Education-Oatly leader chats about that mad week in Paris last summer, which saw her become the first American women to win gold medals in two different disciplines at the same Olympics, her plans for 2025, her outsider's status within the peloton, and why, despite women's cycling progressing rapidly in recent years, the sport has to acknowledge “how far there is to go”. And first up, Emily casts her eye over the cobbled classics season so far, and Ryan recaps an eventful, often chaotic day on the Oude Kwaremont at last weekend's Tour of Flanders, reflecting on why the Ronde means so much not just to Belgium, but to cycling in general.Oh, and we announce the winner of our coveted Episode 100 Jeremy Vine competition…

Jez attended an Australia Day event recently where last year's Australian of the Year recipients, Richard Scolyer and Georgina Long, were speaking about their work. They shared their concerns that young people aren't paying attention to sun-safe messages. They say we've seen worrying trends on social media in the last few years which glamorise tanning and sunburn. So why are #sunburn and #tanlines trending?SHOW NOTESA TikTok tanning trend is making the rounds on social media. Here's why it's dangerous: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-01-04/dangerous-tiktok-tanning-uv-levels-trend/104776700
It's another beautiful day in the Coulee Region. Much warmer than it's been the last few days. In the news this morning, Elon Musk responded to the viral salute he gave after the inauguration, Netflix is raising it's prices again, an armed robbery attempt in La Crosse yesterday, and a Bishop who plead with the President to have mercy on the LGBTQ+ community & illegal immigrants. In sports, the Badgers had their seven-game winning streak come to an end last night at the hands of UCLA, and the Bucks look to make it five in a row tonight in New Orleans against the Pelicans. Plus, the 2025 baseball Hall of Fame inductees were announced yesterday. Elsewhere in sports, four Chilean men were arrested in connection with the recent robbery at Joe Burrow's house, and some nachos ended up on the ice during the Washington Capitals game last night. We talked about what's on TV tonight, and in case you missed it, during his most recent podcast, Howie Mandel surprised Bill Burr with a visit from Billy Corgan to talk about their connection to one another. Cool story about a goose on the loose in Canada with an arrow stuck in it's rear end was finally captured & saved! And even though most of us know this already, auto experts say you don't need to warm up your vehicle during the cold, winter months. We took a look at a recent survey that revealed only one third of people in relationships are comfortable pooping in front of their partner. Today is "National Hot Sauce Day", so we took a look at some of the nation's favorite hot sauces. And did you see the offer this kid is getting from the Pittsburgh Pirates for his Paul Skenes baseball card? And during today's "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a pet monkey that attacked a Starbucks employee after jumping through the drive-thru window, mysterious balls were washing up on a beach in Australia, a 600lb rapper who wants to stage dive on his upcoming tour, an "influencer" who was poisoning her own daughter for "likes" on social media, and drunk guy in #Florida who didn't want to pay his bar tab. This episode contains: Steven is under the weather and Devon had to run fast for Sonic 3. Ben's making his way through the Knuckles TV show (lots of bowling in this one) before seeing the absolute zaniness turned up to 11 of Sonic 3. Do y'all remember “Dumb Running Sonic” on Tumblr? Devon recommends Jury Duty (Amazon Prime): Imagine a prank show where everyone's an actor… except one guy. Chaos ensues. Devon says it's a must-watch, as is The Wild Robot. It's all about nature, death, and a reminder that “nature is real.” Production babies galore! Ben explains how he got a Virtual Boy emulator on his 3DS, while Steven has been reading the book Filter World. Ben's also been playing GRIP Combat Racing, which is kinda like Mario Kart if you prefer ecstasy to mushrooms. You can get it for free right now from Amazon Gaming. Devon's contemplating getting Mario Maker, but then he'd have to get a Switch and that's, like, a lot of work, man… Dumb Running Sonic: https://dumbrunningsonic.tumblr.com/ 3DS Virtual Boy Emulator: https://github.com/skyfloogle/red-viper Filterworld: https://www.kylechayka.com/filterworld My Video Went Viral. A quartet of kids in detention are schooled by an eccentric and sometimes cynical teacher who takes them on often horrifying field trips with the help of a time-traveling/teleporting/shrinking device. Their travels take them face to face with nature's most ruthless parasites, humanity's dumbest failed inventions, and much, much more. If WTF 101 had just made up all of these lessons, it'd still be a funny watch thanks to the clever storytelling, fast-paced plot, and punched-up dialogue. But it's the fact that the show seeks to educate audiences on real-world factoids that gives it that extra shine. It's hilarious, gross, weird, profane, and mostly true! It is NOT FOR KIDS and very much NSFW. Devon reflects on debates between theists and atheists. Why does evil exist? Maybe the animal kingdom knows. Watch the first episode for free on Youtube (The Gruesome Truth About Parasites): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3aZVgyUlSng Check out the entire series on Dropout: https://www.dropout.tv/wtf-101 Burn it all down: Steven presents a groundbreaking study that reveals RNA — not DNA — might trigger sunburns. Sunburn has traditionally been attributed to UV-induced DNA damage. However, a new study by the University of Copenhagen and Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, reveals that RNA, another vital cellular molecule, plays a major role in triggering acute sunburn reactions. Read more at Sciene Daily: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2025/01/250117112413.htm Now for something a little more cheerful from Devon: Quantum suicide and immortality, a thought experiment exploring the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics. The experiment involves repeatedly engaging in an activity with a 50/50 chance of death, with the idea that consciousness will always exist in the universe where the individual survives. Ben is reminded of the short film “One-Minute Time Machine” where a man repeatedly uses a time machine to retry a conversation with a woman, but what happens in the realities he leaves behind? More on wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_suicide_and_immortality One-Minute Time Machine on Youtube: https://youtu.be/CXhnPLMIET0 “Book Club”: This week: Philip K. Dick's short story "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale” (1966). The story follows Douglas Quail, a man obsessed with Mars who seeks out a company to implant fake memories of a Martian trip. It's very different from the 1990 film adaptation of Total Recall, the film's action-oriented approach was very different from the story's focus on psychological elements. Is remembering something the same as living it? “I remember recording a good podcast once.” “Steven, we've never recorded a good podcast.” Read it here: https://philosophy.as.uky.edu/sites/default/files/We%20Can%20Remember%20It%20for%20You%20Wholesale%20-%20Philip%20K.%20Dick.pdf Next week: Alfred Bester's Fondly Fahrenheit. Though the story's disturbing premise—that a servile android-robot could turn on its human superiors and commit murder—was probably radical at the time, without Bester's way with words, Fondly Fahrenheit wouldn't have become the classic science fiction short story that it is today. It's still cited as one of the best sci-fi stories ever. Read it here: http://www.sfsfss.com/stories2/Bester,%20Alfred%20-%20Fondly%20Fahrenheit%20v1.0.htm

For Ep. 173, Susie Boutry (@NovelVisits) joins me as we circle back to one of our favorite topics — niching down our reading into micro genres! In this special Circle Back, we revisit some previously shared micro genres from our two past Micro Genres We Love episodes and introduce two additional micro genres from a Patreon bonus episode not yet heard on the big show! We give examples that define each micro genre for us and share new books we've read that fit into these niches. Plus, we share books for that DIDN'T work for us. This episode is full of over 100 books for you to add to your TBR! This post contains affiliate links through which I make a small commission when you make a purchase (at no cost to you!). In this episode, I discuss skin health appearance and why both are important indicators of the health status of your immune system, gut microbiome, and other organ systems. I explain why sunlight is essential for skin and hormone health and how excessive sunlight can accelerate skin aging and cause certain skin cancers. I discuss the different types of sunscreens (physical, chemical, and mineral-based) and potential health concerns of the chemicals found in some (but not all) sunscreens. I also discuss the importance of getting your skin (and not just moles) checked for pre-cancerous and cancer growths, the role of nutrition and lifestyle factors that improve skin health and appearance, and how to improve your skin by reducing local and systemic inflammation and supporting your microbiome. I explain what works to improve your skin's youthfulness and appearance, including reducing wrinkles, sagging, and pore size. I review the data on ingesting (or topically applied) collagen, vitamin C, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, and retinol, and what is known about the use of peptides (e.g., BPC-157, copper peptides) and red and far-red light phototherapies for improving skin health and appearance. I also discuss the causes of acne, rosacea, and psoriasis and explain nutritional, skin care, and prescription-based approaches to treating these common skin conditions. This episode ought to help everyone better understand the biology of the skin and help them make the best possible decisions for their skin health, care, and appearance according to age, goals, and current skin conditions.
