ADDITIONAL HISTORY: Headlines You Probably Missed

The 1970s were known for having a lot of serial killers. Luckily, many of them were caught, and that includes the infamous Ted Bundy. In April of 1972, Lieutenant Thomas Norris was tasked to lead a mission in Vietnam to rescue Lieutenant Colonel Iceal Gene Hambleton. Hambleton had been shot down in enemy territory, and was surrounded by 30,000 enemy NVA soldiers. Rescuing Hambleton was a top priority for the U.S.. As the navigator of a light bomber (with the call sign Bat 21 Bravo), he was an expert in surface-to-air missile countermeasures and was privy to top secret strategic air command operations, so if he was captured and turned over to the Russians, it could result in “irreparable damage to American National Defense”. Norris' team was also tasked with rescuing 1st Lieutenant Mark Clark, an aviator who had been shot down while trying to rescue Hambleton. On the night of April 10th, 1972, Norris' team successfully evaded multiple patrols, located Clark, and brought him to safety. After two more days of unsuccessful attempts to find Hambleton, many were ready to give up the search. Norris and a South Vietnamese soldier named Petty Officer Nyguen Van Kiet decided to give it one more shot.  Again they successfully maneuvered around multiple enemy patrols, and located Hambleton, who was suffering from hunger and exhaustion. On their way back, they encountered two enemy positions, and came under machine gun fire once. Both times they radioed for assistance, and allied airstrikes took out the danger. All three made it back alive. On March 6th, 1976, Lieutenant Thomas Norris was awarded the Medal of Honor for his part in the rescue. Even after many had tried and failed, Norris showed selfless dedication in the face of extreme danger, resulting in the safe return of 1st Lieutenant Mark Clark and Lieutenant Colonel Iceal Gene Hambleton. If you'd like to hear Lieutenant Hambleton tell the story from his perspective, listen to his interview on Warriors In Their Own Words.  If you'd like to hear about how Norris was almost killed in a patrol that earned his teammate the Medal of Honor, listen to our episode about Lieutenant Michael Thornton. In this week's episode of Transforming 45, Lisa and Elizabeth Hambleton, host of the Never Too Festive podcast, get real about motherhood, personal style, and navigating the holiday season without the pressure to be perfect. Together, they unpack the deep identity shifts that come with motherhood, exploring how personal style evolves through life's transitions and how societal expectations can shape—and sometimes limit—self-expression. Elizabeth shares insights on rethinking holiday traditions, focusing on joy in the moment rather than succumbing to social media's idealized holiday aesthetic. They talk about creating space for both joy and sadness in celebrations and how to develop rituals rooted in nature and authenticity. This episode also highlights the power of rewriting narratives and creating new traditions that hold personal significance. Whether it's finding your true style, letting go of the pressure to create a perfect holiday, or embracing both the highs and lows of seasonal traditions, Elizabeth and Lisa offer refreshing perspectives on authenticity and self-love. Key Takeaways: Transitions, like motherhood, impact our sense of identity and personal style. The pressure to create a perfect holiday can be overwhelming, especially with social media's influence. Embracing imperfection and shifting perspectives can bring healing and joy to holiday celebrations. Allowing space for both joy and sadness during holiday traditions is essential. Connecting with nature through rituals can enhance meaning in celebrations. Authentic style is about dressing for oneself, not to meet others' expectations. Begin each day with self-care, self-love, and intention. This is the perfect episode to set the stage for this years' holiday season. Hitting The High Notes is town planning's equivalent of Desert Island Discs. In these episodes Sam Stafford chats to preeminent figures in the planning and property sectors about the six planning permissions or projects that helped to shape them as professionals. And, so that we can get to know people a little better personally, for every permission or project Sam asks his guests for a piece of music that reminds them of that period of their career. Unlike Desert Island Discs you will not hear any of that music during the episode because using commercially-licensed music without the copyright holders permission or a very expensive PRS licensing agreement could land Sam in hot water, so, when you have finished listening to this episode, you will have to make do with YouTube videos and a Spotify playlist, links to which you will find below. Sam's guest for this episode of Hitting The High Notes is Steve Quartermain. Steve was the government's Chief Planner for twelve years, during which time and perhaps most notably he oversaw the introduction of the transformative National Planning Policy Framework. Prior to this, as you will hear, Steve spent thirty years in local government, starting as an unqualified graduate trainee designing local plan covers in Epping Forest and ending having helped to lead Hambleton to beacon council status. Moving Matters

In this episode, Phil Hambleton, who has just retired, discusses how he got involved within the industry in 1984, when he and his parents decided to buy a small removal company and rebrand it as Hambleton's. After building up Hambleton's, Phil's parents decided to retire in 2002, and Phil consequently sold Hambleton's in 2004 to North West Removals after it became too much for Phil (as one person) to run. At the time of selling Hambleton's ran 6 trucks and housed approximately 500 containers in a 10,000 sqft warehouse. Since selling Hambleton's Phil has remained within the moving industry, where he has worked for Pickfords (for a 12-month period, under incoming BAR President Mike Andrews), Anglo Pacific (for 7 years, until he was made redundant) and finally GB Liners, where he has spent his past 12 years, before retiring at the end of February 2023. Phil has overcome several challenges during his time within the industry, transitioning from owner to employee being one, staff was another (from the point of view of questioning his industry experience and background), and learning new IT systems within each employer. The one thing Phil would change from his moving past is selling Hambleton's, where a last minute change of circumstances meant he could have continued running the business. Phil has a couple of highpoints of being within the industry, the first is being awarded the Michael Gerson Medal for the best essay in the BAR Higher Certificate of Removals Management, and the second being the recognition of industry peer Robert Bartup after being asked to take on 2 of the GB Liner branches. The one thing Phil would like to change within the industry is completion times, citing there needs to be time between exchange and completion to allow people to arrange their removals. The advice Phil would give himself just starting out within the industry again is to seek out experienced people and pick their brains, and to join an association, such as the BAR. In the next 5 years Phil doesn't see much change within the industry, although he does see technology playing a bigger role. Phil doesn't see electric trucks playing a major role within the industry due to their restrictions on distance, but he does see them playing more of a local role. Outside of the industry Phil enjoys walking, he's massively into sports, enjoys dining out and he's joined a gym (but doesn't go a lot). And as always we end Moving Matters with a funny moving story, regarding a survey that ended up in the master bedroom, only to discover another room. Enjoy! Special Guest: Phil Hambleton.

Zeit in New York gibt.

Steven talks to CRASH about the New York scene itself, how the city regards artist, Richard Hambleton, the state of the art market in 2021, and the ever-changing face of New York City and its shifting identity. KEY TAKEAWAYS Many do not realise that in New York City itself, Richard Hambleton's popularity among art lovers surpassed the likes of Keith Haring. The work of Hambleton took on a legendary place in New York's heart. The shadows themselves became characters that accompanied city-goers through life. Homage is one thing, but we must be careful not to copy someone's legacy outright. It's vital that creatives mark out their own unique places in the world. The name of Richard Hambleton has never been more lauded. In more recent times, an unknown artist has been working on the streets in order to pay tribute to his unique talent. Nullbureau talks about his ambitions for the project, and why the work of Hambleton has inspired him in such a revolutionary way. KEY TAKEAWAYS Many artists wish to produce a non-gallery experience, and people are far more attracted to this concept these days. The work of Hambleton has energised the popularity of the non-gallery experience. Street art is not the simple application of spray paint to surface, but the communication between souls - of connecting your visual representation to the eyes and hearts of the world around you. Hambleton's shadow work hearkens back to far more primal visual language - one that originated upon the walls of cavemen, and spoke to their sense of humanity and communication at the dawn of time. There is an innate sense built into all human beings, that compels us to seek ownership of the things in scarce supply. This is what drives the commercial art market. BEST MOMENTS 'It's good to see people adding their pieces to this big puzzle Richard's spread out for us' 'Artists bring that experience to people's lives without telling them - giving them a surprise' 'At your base DNA you know what a shadow means' 'This is a very subversive language to play with' VALUABLE RESOURCES The Steven Sulley Study       ABOUT THE HOST The Steven Sulley Study is my take on success. This week, Steven talks to Dr Norman Turkowitz, an experienced dentist specialising in cosmetic dentistry in New York City - specifically the Manhattan area. Dr Turkowitz joins Steven to discuss his association with street artist legend, Richard Hambleton - one that began twenty five years ago, and which saw the two men trade services in order to benefit the other. KEY TAKEAWAYS Richard Hambleton was not always financially solvent. In order to receive essential services, such as grooming or dental work, he would trade services with professionals, such as Dr Turkowitz. True artists see the value in the talents of others. The simple act of exchanging money for services can often blunt our perspectives, but often, the trading of talent is far more valuable. Back in the day, Richard Hambleton was regarded as something of a local celebrity. His renown had grown through not just artistic circles, but also among other sectors of life and business. BEST MOMENTS 'Your paintings become your currency' 'We are so moved by the Hambleton narrative' 'His talent was greater than all of us' 'If you have the chance, pick up as many Richard Hambletons as you can' VALUABLE RESOURCES The Steven Sulley Study       Dr Norman Turkowitz - https://www.drturkowitz.com ABOUT THE HOST The Steven Sulley Study is my take on success.
