Before his massive failure with the Covid crises, someone remarked that Donald Trump may not turn out to be the worst President we ever had, but for sure he will be the worst person ever to be President. In many ways, Jimmy Carter is the opposite. He may not have been a great President, but he may have been one of the best people to ever be President. It’s hard to say if the problems that Carter faced, the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, inflation, unemployment, and the Iranian hostage crisis, might have happened to any President of that period. But history tells us they were the crisis he was dealt. And the nature of them brought out some of Carter's worst, not his best qualities. It really is a job that’s about the nexus between crisis and character. Sometimes they line up and sometimes they don't. For Carter, it was often out of sync. Jonathan Alter tell the whole story in His Very Best: Jimmy Carter, a Life. My conversation with Jonathan Alter:

Carter Brooks is a climate artist, philosopher, and philosopher of climate art. And how does one become a philosopher of climate art? For Carter the journey started with math, he was a whiz in high school and even wrote his own program for solitaire. He went to Yale for his undergrad and worked for several years before being struck by the immediacy and enormity of the climate crisis and went back to school for his masters. He knew this problem could not be solved in his lifetime, and after grieving reevaluated everything that he thought was important.
Like any podcast, there comes an episode where one of the hosts forgets to change their mic from the default webcam mic to their actual, professional recording device. For Carter, this is that episode, and he is sorry. But ever onward! We watched Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day, starring Francis McDormand. She's just the best. We greatly appreciate everything she's done. We also appreciate everything you've done. Thank you
Author Mark Reynolds, from the Philadelphia area, called in to discuss his most recent book, entitled, (Chasing the Northern Light". According to his Amazon page: "Fearless twenty-something Carter Boyd is in love with life and the extreme thrills that it provides to him. When he thinks he's tried it all, fate provides him with one more, perhaps final, opportunity that he simply cannot pass up--to actually pursue and catch a little-known virus, dubbed by its underground chasers as the "Northern Light", that threatens the very life of its host within an indeterminate period of time. And yet, it contains psychic properties that come to bear as the virus manifests--properties that allow the recipient to see their "truth", and to discover a way in life that leads them down the path toward their own perfectness. For Carter, who is already running from personal demons and desperately looking for an out, the draw to pursue it is too great. In the shadow of Carter's quest, a military viral specialist and a United States Senator have been working a thirty year-old secret agenda to keep it from spreading. Carter's chase follows him through a series of life-changing experiences with help from unexpected sources that lead him to a final confrontation, one that might deliver him from what he fears the most to that which he never knew he could do without." Mark is also working on two novels, a book for children with his wife (in collaboration with his wife), and a screenplay!
