Kenny and Mike talk and spot faith elements in the popular 2000 fim Almost Famous, written / directed by Cameron Crowe, and starring Kate Hudson, Billy Crudup, Patrick Fugit, Frances McDormand, Phiip Seymour Hoffman, and Anna Paquin. Crowe won an Academy Award for best screenplay. Faith Spotted: The place and function of community as a source of accountability and support to help one mature as a person as well as in faith. The importance of love that serves serves others and brings others together rather than seeking to lift up and serve oneself. The difficulty but necessary process of letting a loved one experience life, loss, and success rather than keeping strict control over the individual.
In this episode we discuss the sixty-ninth Best Picture winner, The English Patient! We discuss Gil Cates's and Billy Crystal's return to producing and hosting the Academy Awards Ceremony, Miramax's grassroots campaign strategies for convincing voters to favor The English Patient, and Francis McDormand's exciting Oscar win. We talk about Saul Zaents's struggles finding a studio partner, director Anthony Minghella's insistence on casting decisions, and Kristin Scott Thomas's thoughts on the expectations for women in Hollywood. -- Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thanktheacademypodcast X: https://www.twitter.com/thankacademypod Email us your thoughts: thanktheacademypod@gmail.com Follow us on Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/thanktheacademy/ --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thank-the-academy/support

"Messed up mentors" is this week's theme. "Wonder Boys" (2000) has its issues but was an undeserving box office flop. A lot going on but could actually have been longer if a couple characters had been fleshed out. We agree with one RT critic:"there's a lot to like in this fine mess of a film". Sean Connery plays a J.D. Salinger type in "Finding Forrester" (2000), a film about mentoring, without much of it. Worth a look, but not director Gus Van Sant's best work.Next 'on the lam' films with Steve McQueen in "The Getaway" (1972) and 'Midnight Special" (2016).Thanks for listening!Did we get something wrong? In which we discuss two of the most visually stunning films to come out of Hollywood this year. Originally recorded 14/12/21.
There are two types of people in the world. Those who love Shakespeare and consuming it in the vast array of . And then there are those of us that can't stand Shakespeare and are still annoyed by the fact that at some point growing up we were forced against our will to both read and reenact some play or monologue from Shakespeare. There is no in between. Either you love it or you hate it. Objectively, The Tragedy of Macbeth is probably the best adaptation of Macbeth on the big screen. The performances are great and it's a really good, overall movie. That said, the majority of audiences would never want to sit through 1 hour and 40+ minutes of Shakespearean english. Trust me, it's brutal. This is an extremely niche movie that's aimed at a niche audience. Which is fine. But it does beg the question as to why being aimed at a narrow niche audience never seems to be a problem for critics with films like this but then that same thing is used as a negative with other films. It's almost lazy in the fact that at this point, since all these films are basically remakes of the same thing over and over again. Yet that never seems to be a problem. And that leads to the real issue that needs to be directed at the film industry. The question really isn't if this is a good movie or not. For those that love Shakespeare, they'll love this. For those that don't, they'll probably never watch this movie beyond a few curious minutes when they see Denzel Washington or Francis McDormand and go "oh what's this?" and then promptly turn it off and go back to something else. That's the reality. The real question is at what point do we free ourselves from the outdated chains that are Shakespeare? There are so many other literary masterpieces and plays that are better that we could focus our time on. Instead every few years someone is remaking something by Shakespeare. Enough is enough. It's time to pack Shakespeare up in a museum and stop using this as some form of gatekeeping of true acting or directing ability. This week, we watch the Joel Coen's first film without his brother Ethan. We recommend reading a plot synopsis beforehand if you are unfamiliar with the story, and also turn on the subtitles if you want to come close to understanding all of the dialogue. We also discuss James Gunn as a writer and director, which goes to some interesting places, especially in the wake of further revelations about Joss Whedon. As always, we want to thank you all for listening. We really do appreciate every one of you. This week, Annabel tackles the first half of Wes Anderson's newest, long awaited zany comedy 'The French Dispatch'. Starring every actor currently working in Hollywood, this film revolves around three different vignettes detailing off-kilter, action packed articles previously published in titular magazine 'The French Dispatch', that have been hand picked to be featured in the publication's final edition upon editor Arthur Howitzer Jr.'s (Bill Murray's) sudden death. Will a meticulously quirky aesthetic, elitist humour and a completely disjointed structure be the power trio worthy of my praise? Stream now to find out.
The film Blood Simple (1984) was a launch pad for a lot of top Hollywood talent including Joel and Ethan Coen, Barry Sonnenfeld, and Frances McDormand. It's also a pretty solid flick. Welcher „Loser wins“?
Anna wollte "Godzilla vs. Kong" eigentlich scheiße finden.
Lemme ask you a question: Is Nomadland the best picture of 2020? Join the Dead Beat Film Society as we name our vans and talk the Academy Award Best Picture winner, Chloé Zhao and her rise to Marvel movie director, Francis McDormand's alter ego, #vanlife, the great recession, working in an Amazon warehouse, workers rights, unions, poverty, exploitation of the elderly, travelers, using non-actors, the vast beauty of America, living in your car, grief, dealing with death, the gig economy, pooping in a bucket (and the importance of deciding on size), ok being alone, houseless vs. homeless, whether this movie will stand the test of time, and question the motives of this movie and what it's all really about. Smash that play button for an in depth Nomadland analysis! (Special Guest: Mechanical Freak Podcast) Click here to listen and subscribe to Mechanical Freak podcast!
Nomadland wants to make one thing very clear: capitalism destroys people's lives. Adapting the nonfiction novel of the same name, director Chloé Zhao turns a poetic lens on the lives of real American nomads, asked to essentially play themselves alongside actress Francis McDormand. Somber music accents Fern's journey as she drifts down highways in her van, bathed in a warm sunset. The beauty of Nomadland is in its nuanced portrayal of an uncomfortable reality. In one scene, Fern visits her sister, a homeowner living in the suburbs, and contends with the dismissal of her nomadic lifestyle when company starts talking real estate and the stock market. In another, a gut wrenching monologue by a nomad named Swankie, diagnosed with cancer and committed to going out on her own terms, ended up a personal highlight of the film for all of us and caused an existential crisis. We enjoyed Nomadland for its masterful visual storytelling but mostly for its poignant message and relevancy. Though the story takes place in 2011, wealth inequality and America's hatred of poor people will always be topical. Much of the country is still grappling today with the 2020 pandemic and economic collapse. As eviction moratoriums expire and the government shows no signs of providing aid to those in need, families and individuals rocked financially by a country leaving its people to fend for themselves during a pandemic are now faced with homelessness. Nomadland feels increasingly like not an alternative lifestyle, but an imminent future for many Americans robbed of their dignity by capitalism. UNDER THE COVERS with Claire Connors, Episode 7 features Part 1 of an exclusive 2-part interview with special guest STEVE BLOOM, former longtime editor of High Times Magazine and publisher of CelebStoner.com. NYC-based top editor/publisher and author STEVE BLOOM was with High Times Magazine for nearly three decades. In this episode, he talks about his journalistic background as a music reviewer in the ‘70s and ‘80s at Rolling Stone and many other top titles, to his early interest in gaming magazines dating back to the early ‘80s…and of course, the candid native New Yorker does a deep dive with Claire into many of the famous (and infamous!) High Times covers that he booked and managed, with hilarious behind-the-scenes stories of the publishing world and of course, its intersection with cannabis and weed culture…including Snoop Dogg's visit to the High Times offices back in the day, Oscar-winner Francis McDormand (yes, she partakes), the surprisingly professional Cypress Hill cover, a cover-that-never-happened with Sarah Silverman and many more insider tales of the bygone days of high-flying print magazines… For more information about Steve Bloom and the latest in drug news and laws, go to www.celebstoner.com and follow them @celebstoner on Instagram. This week, resident millennial commentator Annabel bravely takes on the first half of 2021 Best Picture Academy Award winner 'Nomadland'. Starring three time Oscar winner Francis McDormand, this partially fictional quasi bio-pic details the struggles of houseless nomad Fern, who travels around the country solo after being displaced as a result of the Great Recession. Is this slow moving tale of poverty, pain and loss an unexpected riot, or is it as completely and utterly depressing as it sounds? Stream now to find out.

It's a Texan double feature this time on MG - first is the Coen Brothers’ debut film Blood Simple, a seething neo-noir that rocked the indie world when it came out, introduced us to Academy favorite Francis McDormand, and secretly laid out a map of the directors' greatest obsessions, hinting at Fargo, No Country for Old Men and more! Next up is Wim Wenders gentle-and-upsetting Paris, Texas, which features Harry Dean Stanton in one of his finest, most understated performances!
Another win for Francis McDormand and a heartbreaking tale of pioneers on the road. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/drzeusfilmpodcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/drzeusfilmpodcast/support

This week's episode would have been the week we get into Oscar presentation but it kind of sucked. So we cover the gambit of television and movies that are streaming. Dean's hair is exceptionally curly, Jorge is excited about the big boxing fights, Chris's forearms are sore and bulging but for all new reasons and Troy can't wait to talk about the UFC fights last weekend that included a video game style bone breaking finish in one match. So that is perfect for our reactions to the new Mortal Kombat movie and we pick our favorite fighters from Mortal Kombat and Streetfighter. Support the show (https://twitter.com/GuDVIBESpodcast?s=20)
We liked everything this week! We re-visit “Nomadland,” talk about the criminally overlooked “Over the Moon,” and discuss “Ted Lasso” and "Frank of Ireland.”
Ah jeez. Today we're discussing a super film called Fargo directed by Joel (and Ethan) Coen starring William H Macy, Steve Buscemi, and the incredible now four time Oscar winner Francis McDormand. We also have special guess Jenny M. Jones on the podcast who's written multiple books (cited below) and is a huge Coen Brothers fan and from Minnesota herself to discuss their work and the film as well. The Big Lebowski: An Illustrated, Annotated History of the Greatest Cult Film of All Time (Voyageur Press, 2012) The Annotated Godfather: the Complete Screenplay (Black Dog & Leventhal Publishers, 2007 50th-anniversary edition, 2021)
Week 3 of our Sam Rockwell theme month we discuss the 2017 film Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Sam Rockwell would go on to win an Oscar for his performance in this movie. This movie also stars Francis McDormand, Caleb Landry Jones, Woody Harrelson, and Abbie Cornish.
On this episode of the MacGuffin Guild, we're heading over to Hardbodies to join a few daft gym employees with valuable information for which they don't intend to Burn After Reading. This 2008 Coen Brothers Dark Comedy Crime Drama stars George Clooney, Frances McDormand, John Malkovich, Tilda Swinton, Brad Pitt and Richard Jenkins. We're gonna let talk about the work and awards of Francis McDormand, unnecessarily mean reviews, Sledgehammer, the art of the dump and run and Charades with Justin. We'll discuss Malkovich's rage, Brad Pitt's comedic timing, Pat's Beef with Deborah and the wasp venom coursing through Mike's veins. We'll also get into the best performances of this film, synonyms for wheelhouse, bad decisions, the pizza thieving ghost and we'll debate which character is the ultimate victim.I'm Pat Dougherty and as always I'll be joined by my fellow MacGuffin's Justin Jones and Mike Antonio. Our theme song was written and performed by Jordan Vincent. Just incase you're worried about the security... of your shit. Be sure to Burn After Reading.
Biden's economic recovery plan: Harold Meyerson comments, starting with the latest obstacles to keeping the $15 minimum wage in the Senate bill that goes to reconciliation – also, is aid to state governments a “blue-state bailout”? Also: UCLA has gotten a multi-million dollar grant to establish an archive of the age of mass incarceration, starting with 177 boxes of LAPD records from the seventies through the 2000s –Kelly Lytle Hernandez and Shannon Speed explain the project and how they will be partnering with community groups. Plus: our TV critic Ella Taylor reviews “Judas and the Black Messiah,” now on HBO Max, about the Chicago police assassinating Black Panther Fred Hampton in 1969, and also talks about “Nomadland,” the wonderful film starring Francis McDormand as a working class woman who has lost her husband, her job and her house and is living and working out of her van—it opens Friday on Hulu.
