Adam helped a client regain their confidence and self-belief at competing at the highest level in Jiu Jitsu after experiencing a high-profile loss. Adam helped them frame the loss as evidence that they weren't as good as they thought they were, but only for that moment in the past and not their present or future. A federal appeals court has ruled that Christian schools in Maine must comply with the state's LGBT policies if they want to participate in the tuition assistance program. Is this an isolated case—or part of a much larger pattern? In this episode of Fearless with Mark & Amber, we revisit themes from our documentary Title IX: Demoralizing America and explain why this legal battle is about far more than sports or education. It's ultimately a conflict between two competing worldviews: God's design versus man's ever-changing definitions of truth. We discuss: - Why government funding always comes with strings attached - How this mirrors warnings we've shared for years - The growing pressure on Christian schools and churches - Why biblical identity matters more than ever - How parents can prepare their families before another school year begins Our prayer is not to create fear—but to equip Christians to stand firm, think biblically, and disciple the next generation. Who are the greatest female heroes in horror movie history? In this episode, we celebrate the courageous women who faced unimaginable terror and refused to give up. We also spotlight Greta Schroder's Ellen in the silent horror masterpiece Nosgeratu, Emily Perkins' Brigitte Fitzgerald from Ginger Snaps, Sigourney Weaver's Ellen Ripley in Alien, Frieda Inescourt's Lady Jane Ainsley in Return of the Vampire, and the legendary Jamie lee Curtis as Laurie Strode in Halloween. When people ask why I'm so passionate about nutrition and fitness, they usually expect me to talk about weight loss. But that's honestly not the part I care about most anymore. In this episode, I'm sharing how years of competing in CrossFit, Olympic weightlifting, and powerlifting changed the way I think about confidence—and why I believe confidence isn't something you magically find once you hit your goal weight. It's something you earn by collecting evidence that you can keep promises to yourself. We talk about: Why confidence comes from action, not affirmations What competing actually taught me (and it wasn't how to get lean) Why so many women don't need another meal plan—they need to rebuild trust in themselves How fitness spills over into every other area of your life Why the goal has never been just to lose weight If you've ever felt like you've lost confidence in yourself or you're tired of starting over every Monday, this episode is for you. Because the weight loss isn't the whole story—it's what happens after you start believing you're capable again that changes everything. You can find Emily Franklin at www.emilyfranklin.com or on IG at emilyfranklinauthor At the end of May, we attended a Carmichael's book event featuring author Emily Franklin, who has written numerous books. Her latest titled Love & Other Monsters is about a time in history that most English majors look on with awe and wonder. Her novel is about the summer of 1816 when Mary Shelley, Percy Shelley, Lord Byron and John Polidori traveled to Switzerland and, as the legend goes, told scary stories to each other, which ended up leading to the first vampire story and the book we now know as Frankenstein. But Franklin's novel focuses on a member of the party who doesn't get any acknowledgement—Mary's step-sister Claire Clairemont. Emily did a great job making the Carmichael's audience want to learn more about Claire's story, so we invited her on to share it with our listeners. And for our book recommendation segment of the show, we are talking Shakespeare, the Bard, the Swan of Avon, Willy Shakes. Shakespeare is such a touchstone in literature in ways that we don't regularly think about like classic phrases and tropes. But you don't have to be (or not to be) a Shakespeare scholar to enjoy the books we talk about this week. We have a historical mystery, witty nonfiction, historical fiction, a memoir, a middle grade novel, and a novel in verse. All are influenced in some way by Shakespeare's plays or the man himself. Books Mentioned In This Episode: 1- Love and Other Monsters by Emily Franklin 2- Grandma Joy & Me: A Journey of Healing , One National Park at a Time by Brad Ryan 3- The Humming Room by Ellen Potter 4- The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett 5- Summer of 1816: A World Without Summer by Nicholas Day 6- Frankenstein by Mary Shelley 7- The Vampyre by John Polidori 8- Fearless, Sleepless, Deathless: What Mushrooms Taught Me About Nourishment, Poison, Ecology, Hidden Histories, Zombies, and Black Survival by Maria Pinto 9- Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman 10- Winter Counts by David Heska Wanbly Weiden 11- Wisdom Corner by David Heska Wanbly Weiden 12- A Five Star Read of Fellow Book Lover Joshua - Devotions by Mary Oliver 13- Daughter of Fair Verona by Christina Dodd 14- Much Ado About Mistletoe by Christina Dodd 15- Shakespeare: The World as a Stage by Bill Bryson 16- By Any Other Name by Jodi Picoult 17- Enter the Body by Joy McCullough 18- Shakespeare: The Man Who Pays the Rent by Judi Dench 19- The Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Mandy Gonzalez joins the podcast for a warm, candid, and inspiring conversation tracing her extraordinary journey from a passionate kid in Southern California to one of Broadway's most celebrated performers. She reflects on her grandmother's pivotal role in nurturing her voice, from family living room jam sessions to getting her first theatrical role at seven years old alongside all-you-can-eat pickles at a local dinner theater. Mandy shares memories from her formative summer at the Broadway Theater Project learning under legends like Gregory Hines and Ann Reiking, as well as the wild, thrown-into-the-fire experience of going on tour as a backup singer for Bette Midler at just nineteen years old. She also recounts her memorable first meeting with Lin-Manuel Miranda in the basement of the Drama Book Shop, where she heard the score for In the Heights for the very first time. The discussion delves deeply into the power of community, advocacy, and stepping through life's biggest fears. Mandy opens up about creating the #FearlessSquad social media platform, which blossomed into a movement of belonging and inspired her young adult novel series, Fearless. She shares the poignant story of navigating her breast cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy treatment while continuing to perform in Hamilton on Broadway, explaining how the theater community provided a safe space during dark times. From taking on iconic roles in shows like Wicked, Sunset Boulevard, and Aida to creating her symphonic concert Everything I Know celebrating the songbook of Lin-Manuel Miranda, Mandy illustrates what it truly means to live a life driven by connection, resilience, and gratitude. Mandy Gonzalez is an accomplished Broadway actor, singer, and author. Best known for creating the role of Nina Rosario in In the Heights and starring as Angelica Schuyler in Hamilton, her extensive Broadway credits also include Elphaba in Wicked, Amneris in Aida, and Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard. Her screen credits include Madam Secretary, Only Murders in the Building, Bull, Quantico, The Good Wife, and Across the Universe. Can science and Scripture really agree? In this episode of Fearless with Mark & Amber, we sit down with internationally recognized speaker, author, and founder of The Starting Point Project, Jay Seegert, to tackle one of the biggest questions facing Christians today: Can we confidently defend the authority of God's Word? Fear-Less, Pt. 7: The Worst Case Mike Gathright Have you ever noticed how often the things that keep you awake at night never actually happen? This past Sunday, at Storyline's Gathering, we explored why Jesus commands us, “Do not worry about tomorrow,” and how God's grace can help us fear less, trust more, and find freedom from the monsters hiding in the dark.
Judi Holler will happily tell you she is one of the biggest fraidy cats you will ever meet. She is afraid of all the things. She is also a keynote speaker, USA TODAY bestselling author of Fear Is My Homeboy and a self-described professional experimenter who has spent nearly twenty years treating fear as her most important advisor. That contradiction is precisely the point of this conversation, because as Judi sees it, the goal was never fearless. The goal is brave. Her courage was built in unlikely places. Working in corporate America by day, Judi spent her nights in the dark, dingy little theatres of Chicago’s improv scene, eventually training at the legendary Second City. She calls improv her fear yoga. With no script and no safety net, those basement stages taught her how to make mistakes, recover, listen and act before she felt ready. Then she started smuggling those lessons into the office: speaking up first in meetings, sitting in the front row, going for the promotion, asking for the raise. Small brave moves that walked new people and opportunities into her life, until the morning her boss sat her down over breakfast and told her to choose between her corporate career and her growing speaking work. She set down her fork and knife, looked at him and said, I don’t choose you. I’m going to choose me on this one. I quit. A decade later, she has never looked back. Fearless is for five-year-olds and sociopaths Judi takes issue with the word fearless, plastered as it is across t-shirts, bumper stickers and tattoos. If you were truly fearless, she points out, you would never see a doctor, you would eat poisonous food on purpose, you would punch a shark in the face. Borrowing a line from Elizabeth Gilbert, she reminds us that the only genuinely fearless people are five-year-olds and sociopaths. Fear is wisdom. The work is not to eliminate it but to fear your fear less, and bravery, like confidence and creativity, is a muscle built through daily experimentation. Your brain versus your soul At the heart of Judi’s methodology sits a tension we all live with: our brains are louder, faster and more practised than our souls. The brain has one job, safety, and it can only reference past data, endlessly auditing your life and pulling you back towards the familiar. But life does not follow old data. Life is improv. There is no script. The soul is your capacity to trust yourself and make decisions inside uncertainty, and Judi is quick to note this is no longer woo. She points to the World Economic Forum’s Future of Work research, where skills like resilience, creative thinking, motivation and self-awareness now top the list of what the world needs, and every one of them lives in the soul. Reclaim, don’t reinvent When Judi felt creatively caged five years ago, she resisted the urge to tear it all down. Reinvention, she says, whispers that what you have built is not good enough. Reclamation says the opposite: I love what you have made here, and I want to see more. Through a confrontational journey of self-discovery, she realised nothing was ever wrong with her. She had simply been painting the canvas of her life with everybody else’s brush. Out of that season came the HOLLER Method, a personal operating system for courage built letter by letter from her own surname, along with nightly rituals like her 9.30pm glitch list, where she captures the ideas her brain would rather she forgot. Judi leaves the audience with three golden nuggets: Trust it all. Every twist, delay and detour is preparing you for what comes next. Experiment with your fear. Every day. On purpose. Small brave moves compound into a courageous life. Honour the graveyard rule. As Les Brown says, the graveyard is the richest place on earth, full of dreams that were never acted on. Do not let yours be buried there. It is a funny, honest and deeply practical conversation about courage, self-trust and the experiments that bring us back to ourselves. Whatever you have been waiting to do, take the first step. Go scared. Watch the full conversation on YouTube. Caitlin Clark's supporters have spent two years telling us she's different. More composed. More professional. A beacon of class in a league full of drama. Last night against Golden State, she proved them wrong. Clark's referee meltdown wasn't just a bad moment — it was a reveal. The same behavior her fans weaponized against other WNBA players is now on full display from their golden girl. Jason Whitlock breaks down the double standard, the selective outrage, and what Clark's tantrum tells us about the media machine that built her myth. The standards don't change based on who you are. Or at least, they shouldn't. ➢Today's Sponsors Tired of hot, sleepless summer nights? Switch to GhostBed. Try it at home for 101 nights and feel the difference. The MLB All-Star Game tried to be patriotic. Instead, it seemed desperate. From Patti LaBelle's stumbling national anthem and a cringeworthy fifth-inning "Sandlot" spoof to Miss America's rendition of "God Bless America" — baseball's midsummer showcase went all in on patriotism and came out looking like a try-hard political ad. Jason Whitlock breaks down why performative patriotism is worse than no patriotism at all — and what the MLB's All-Star spectacle reveals about a league that has lost touch with its own audience. ➢Today's Sponsors PreBorn has helped rescue more than 400,000 babies, and every single day, they continue that work by offering mothers something powerful and life-changing: an ultrasound. In this powerful episode, Amanda Rose of The Rose Channel returns to share the extraordinary near death experience that transformed her from a woman trapped in an abusive relationship into a fearless public speaker and voice for voluntaryism. Amanda recounts leaving her body in 2014 during a moment of deep trauma, merging with source consciousness, and experiencing herself as a massive dragon flying above the earth, feeling infinite parental love for all of humanity. She explains how that spiritual catalyst stripped away her fear, insecurities, and old programming, ultimately leading her to Larken Rose and to the stage, where audiences could not believe her first talk was her first. The conversation goes deep into the nature of love versus hate, the origins of evil, the danger of simmering in vengeance, and why she believes the desire for dominion over others is the true dividing line between heaven and hell. Amanda also shares practical wisdom from her new ebook, Awaken Your Dragon: A Guide to Becoming a Confident, Commanding Public Speaker, a workbook that teaches you to rewire negative thought patterns, silence imposter syndrome, and unlock your authentic voice. Patrick K. O'Donnell, guest author, explains that following Blazer's capture, Harry Harrison Young took command of the Union's special forces assets under Phil Sheridan. Only 5'5" but "absolutely fearless," Young transformed the Jesse Scouts into a vital strategic asset. These scouts, often operating in Confederate uniforms, conducted suicide missions and used elaborate disguises—such as peddlers or Southern recruiting officers—to gather real-time intelligence. The hazards were so extreme that most Jesse Scouts did not survive the war, though the unit ultimately earned seven Medals of Honor. As Sheridan moved to join Grant at Petersburg, the scouts performed an epic mission: delivering messages to Grant by riding 100 miles through enemy territory with the orders wrapped in tin foil in their mouths. During the final campaign, the Jesse Scouts acted as Sheridan's "eyes," seizing critical bridges and providing the intelligence needed to find weak points in Lee's lines. They played a pivotal role at the Battle of Five Forks, where they discovered that Confederate leaders were distracted by a "shad bake" (fish luncheon) and failed to hear the opening of the battle due to an atmospheric anomaly. The scouts even used misinformation to direct retreating Confederates to the wrong locations and intercepted orders meant to supply Lee's starving army at Amelia Courthouse.
