Fearless Creative Expression and Lived Experience From Arturo Sandoval Who "Sounds Good", In-Studio

Trumpeter and bandleader Arturo Sandoval is a Latin music legend who began his career as a co-founder of the essential Cuban band Irakere and since moving to the States has incorporated the sounds of soul, jazz, funk, and Afrobeat into his music. Barack Obama awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and his life was the subject of the film For Love Or Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story, with Andy Garcia starring as Arturo. The real Arturo Sandoval was born in Cuba, defected to America with the help of his friend Dizzy Gillespie, and became one of the foundational figures in Afro-Cuban jazz. By the way, he was recently knighted by the King of Spain. His new album shows that Sandoval retains his youthful enthusiasm; it's called Sangú – an inadvertent bit of Spanglish that simply means “sounds good.” Arturo Sandoval leads his band in some of these latest tunes from Sangú - bebop, funk, Yoruba spiritual memory, riding along with Cuban phrasing and percussion, in-studio. He also demonstrates the jaw harp, shows off his “Red Trumpet”, and tells the harrowing story of how he gained political asylum for himself and his family while touring in Europe in 1990. - Caryn Havlik Set list: 1.Scat 2. Episode SummaryWhat happens after a first-generation college student enters the professional world? In this episode of the APCDA Podcast, executive coach, leadership consultant, and author Michele Y. Hoover introduces the concept of the first-generation professional—someone who enters the workplace without inherited knowledge of how professional environments operate.Drawing from her own journey as the daughter of South Korean immigrants, Michele explores the unwritten rules of professional life, including why good work rarely speaks entirely for itself, why relationships are part of the job, and why the criteria for advancement constantly change. She also discusses how first-generation professionals can advocate for themselves without abandoning their cultural values, how educators and employers can better support them, and how experiences once viewed as disadvantages can become powerful professional strengths. The conversation also offers a preview of Michele's upcoming book, From First to Fearless, and reflects on storytelling, identity, family responsibility, mentorship, and the chance experiences that shape our careers.Episode Chapters 00:00 — Welcome to On the Mic With Thought LeadersMeet Michele Y. Every story carries a worldview—and every day, those stories are shaping what we believe, what we love, and ultimately how we live. In Episode 366 of Fearless with Mark & Amber, we're sharing our “Lights, Camera, Worldview” presentation from the Worldview Matters conference in Green Bay. We unpack what God has taught us through nearly eight years of filmmaking and ministry: media doesn't simply inform us—it forms us. The question isn't whether we're being discipled, but who or what is discipling our hearts? We share the story behind Fearless Features and the journey that took us from Inwood Drive to The Mind Polluters, Dysphoria, Title IX: Demoralizing America, and now Principalities: Doctrine of Demons. Along the way, we've learned that the cultural battles surrounding life, sexuality, identity, education, and truth cannot ultimately be understood as merely political battles. There is a spiritual reality beneath what we're seeing. You'll also hear some of our own redemption story and why we're convinced that exposing darkness can never be the destination. Jesus Christ is. Our hope isn't found in winning a culture war. It's found in Christ—the One who rescues, redeems, renews the mind, and equips His people to walk courageously in truth. As we close, we give you a little homework for next week's episode: read Romans 12:2 in context. We're going to dig into what it really means to refuse conformity to the patterns of this world and instead be transformed by the renewing of our minds. “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” — Romans 12:2

“One thing that kids think is, I don't want to burden my parents with this, this is too much for them. And when we're willing to say, ‘Are you struggling with suicide, do you have a plan, do you want to die by suicide,' that opens the door for them to say, Wow, maybe I'm not going to burden them. Maybe this isn't that bad. They brought it up to me, so it must be okay.” I'm Dr. Shelly Mahon, your host, and in today's episode we talk about how most parents can feel when something is off with their kid, but freeze right at the moment it matters most. Do you ask the hard question, or do you wait and hope it passes? Jenna Candreia has spent years helping families move past that fear. As executive director of The Liv Project, Jenna works to bring youth mental health and suicide prevention “out of the shadows” and give parents real, practical language for the conversations they're most afraid to start.  About Our Guest Jenna Candreia is the Executive Director of The Liv Project, a Philadelphia-based nonprofit focused on turning the conversation about youth mental health and suicide prevention “out of the shadows.” Jenna leads the organization's work from Colorado. The Liv Project was created in memory of Liv, a 19-year-old who died by suicide in 2019 after struggling with anxiety, depression and a non-verbal learning disorder. Her family transformed their grief into a mission centered on connection, fearless communication, and giving people practical ways to talk about mental health. The organization's work includes The Game That Goes There, creative workshops, digital discussion guides, the My Sister Liv documentary, and the L.I.V. framework (Listen, Identify, Vocalize) for recognizing and responding to mental health struggles. In This Episode, We Cover Liv's story, and how her family turned their grief into a mission built on connection and fearless conversation What “fearless conversations” actually means in practice, and why asking a teen directly about suicidal thoughts doesn't plant the idea The subtle changes parents should watch for when a teen may be struggling, and how to tell ordinary teenage behavior from something that needs more attention The L.I.V. framework, Listen, Identify, Vocalize, and how a parent can put it to use at home Why kids often stay quiet because they don't want to “burden” a parent, and how being asked directly can actually be a relief Moving out of problem-solving mode and learning what it looks like to really listen when a teen opens up How social media shapes belonging, comparison and self-worth, and the “compare/despair” trap Jenna sees in the kids she works with What to say, and what to avoid saying, when a child finally tells a parent “I'm not okay” How to tell when a situation has moved beyond what a parent can manage alone, and how to bring in outside support Approaching a teen's changed behavior with curiosity and “protective mode” instead of “attack mode” Why it's progress, not perfection, and how kids forgive parents who keep showing up The one skill Jenna believes every parent needs to help protect a child's mental health Other Lines Worth Remembering “As parents we get so scared when behavior changes. Our kids see us as coming in with attack mode, but it's really protective mode. Breathe through that, and ask questions.” “It's not perfection, it's progress. Our kids forgive us.” “One of the things I always tell kids is, with social media, you are comparing your insides to everyone else's outsides. You're seeing a snapshot, a picture, that seems so happy and so wonderful, and you're comparing that to how you feel on the inside. That is not apples to apples.” Resources Mentioned & Related Reading The Liv Project: Resources, programs and tools designed to help families and communities have more open conversations about youth mental health and suicide prevention Fearless Conversation Guides: Two action-oriented guides, one for someone worried about themselves and one for someone worried about another person The L.I.V. Framework: Listen, Identify, Vocalize — a simple framework for helping young people recognize what's happening internally and find language to ask for help My Sister Liv: A documentary telling the story of Liv, her sister Tess, and their family's experience with youth mental health, suicide and grief; also used as a catalyst for community conversations 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline: Call or text 988 for immediate crisis support in the United States Crisis Text Line: Text LIV to 741741 for crisis text support

Getting quoted in an article or featured in the media strengthens your portfolio and gives you something powerful to share on LinkedIn and across your website. It puts you in front of potential clients too.Pitching a journalist and pitching a potential client actually have a lot in common. You need to know exactly who you're talking to, give them a reason to care, make your value clear, and get past the fear of hitting send.My guest today is Zach Schleien, a fractional CMO, entrepreneur, and founder of Press Pitch AI. Send us Fan MailA decade before Amelia Earhart became a household name, Harriet Quimby made aviation history. In 1911, Quimby became the first woman in the United States to earn a pilot's license. The following year, she became the first woman to fly solo across the English Channel—a dangerous and extraordinary achievement at a time when aviation itself was still in its infancy. And then history largely forgot her.In this episode I talk with longtime television journalist and author Don Dahler about his biography Fearless: Harriet Quimby, a Life Without Limit. He shares Quimby's beginnings on a struggling Michigan farm; her successful career as a journalist, critic, and travel writer; her determination to learn to fly despite widespread resistance to women in aviation; her ingenious plum-colored flying suit; and the extraordinary 1912 English Channel flight whose moment in the headlines was eclipsed by the sinking of the Titanic. And Harriet was much more than a pilot. Don describes a fiercely independent woman who traveled the world, wrote fearlessly, resisted the limitations society placed on women, supported her family, wrote screenplays, and imagined an eventual career as a novelist—a future cut short when she died in an aviation accident at just 37.We also wander into Don's own fascinating story. A former CBS News correspondent and war reporter, Don is the author of the memoir Souvenirs from an Absurd Life. We talk about journalism, adventure, writing, encounters from Ethiopia to Grenada, retirement, curiosity, and what a lifetime spent deliberately seeking out the wider world has taught him.And near the end, our conversation circles back to the word at the heart of Harriet's story: fearless. Is anyone really fearless? Or is courage something more interesting—the ability to acknowledge fear, accept the risk, and keep doing the thing that matters anyway?Did you know you can support your local independent bookshop and me by shopping through my Bookshop.org affiliate links on my website? 570. People constantly tell Billy Eichner he's fearless, and they always want to know how he does it. In Savvy Psychologist's first-ever interview episode, Dr. Judy Ho sits down with the comedian behind "Billy on the Street" and "Parks and Recreation" to trace that boldness back to its source, and it isn't the one you'd expect. There's a stubborn myth that artists have to suffer to be great, but Billy's story is the opposite: two middle-class parents in a small Queens apartment who never instilled an ounce of shame in him and leaned all the way into who he was. His new audio memoir, "Billy on Billy," reveals how feeling completely safe and accepted as a kid is what gave him permission to take risks and become fully himself. The reframe at the heart of it: real confidence is built by love, not forged through pain. Listen to "Billy on Billy: An Audio Memoir" Have a mental health question? At the time, she was told she might only have a few years to live and that her unborn child could also be affected. Her son was ultimately born HIV negative, and six years later, her daughter was born HIV negative as well. For years, Tristina kept her diagnosis private while building businesses, owning an airline, leading organizations, and raising her family. What can God do with a life that feels too broken, too messy, or too far gone? In this special episode of Fearless with Mark & Amber, we share Amber Archer's keynote message, “Her Story, His Glory,” recorded at a Hope Lives event in Kentucky. Amber shares the story of a life once marked by addiction, alcohol, strip clubs, arrests, jail cells, and a devastating car accident that nearly took her life. But the accident wasn't the end of her story—and it wasn't what saved her. Only Jesus could do that. From a 22-year-old woman staring at a face she no longer recognized in a hospital mirror, to a young woman quietly slipping into the back row of a church hoping no one would discover her past, Amber shares how God patiently pursued her—and how one believer's simple invitation to lunch helped change the trajectory of her life. This is a story about shame, consequences, surrender, discipleship, marriage, motherhood, ministry, and ultimately the redeeming power of Jesus Christ. God didn't erase Amber's story. He redeemed it for His glory. And He didn't simply rescue her from something. He rescued her for something. The episode also explores why Christians must be willing to see the person behind the brokenness, how an encounter with abortionist George Klopfer reinforced the truth that every soul desperately needs a Savior, and why ministries like Hope Lives must offer more than physical resources—they must offer the eternal hope found in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. 00:00 Welcome to Fearless with Mark & Amber

Your joy is your magnetism. Not the hashtag choose joy version. The real one. The one where you choose your own life force, especially in the moments it is the hardest thing to do. In this episode I'm talking about what it actually means to be a woman connected to her life force, and what it looks like when we're not. I get honest about the fact that this doesn't come easy for me. I wasn't raised in a family that modeled joy or ease or everything always working out. I have to work for my alignment every single day, sometimes moment by moment. And I think that's exactly why this conversation matters. We talk about what it looks like to actually build this. Savoring the small things. Slowing down enough to let your nervous system believe it's allowed to. And doing a real life edit, looking at the conversations, the people, the way you're building your business, the way you're making money, and asking if any of it is actually bringing you joy. We do so much work uncovering our blocks and our limiting beliefs and it matters. But this is the next layer. This is the work of the fearless warrior we are all being invited to become right now.

Kiko is the Founder & CEO of Chomp, a social game that rewards honesty instead of punishing it and she's on a mission to fix what she calls the "performative internet." Kiko opens up about her path from boarding school in China to New Zealand and the United States, the anti-authoritarian streak she carried as a kid, and the long road to understanding her own identity across cultures. The conversation gets candid as she discusses her experience with open relationships and how it reshaped her views on love, trust, kindness, and loyalty then turns to the bigger picture: why social media rewards performance over authenticity, why women in particular self-censor online, and why honest human belief may be the scarcest, most valuable data in the age of AI. Kiko also shares her founder journey from COO at Orca (one of Solana's largest decentralized exchanges, where she helped raise $19M and grow the platform to $1B+ in 24-hour trading volume) to building Chomp, which drew 50,000 beta users sharing millions of honest answers and raised $3.6M from backers including BlueYard, JSquare, and Accomplice placing her among the 2% of female-led startups to raise venture capital. Chomp launches on iOS in 2026. Equal parts personal memoir and founder story, this episode covers identity, relationships, resilience, the loneliness epidemic, the funding gap for female founders, and what it takes to build something real in a "dead internet" full of bots and AI slop. Fearless with Cissie Graham Lynch

Welcome back to a brand new season of Fearless! I usually take a break from the podcast over the summer, but this summer especially looked very different for our family in many ways. It was a quieter season, a season we didn't really plan for, as my mom battled some health issues and our family stayed put in Boone. But sometimes even those seasons we don't plan for can end up being exactly what God uses to slow us down and show us what really matters. That was this summer for me. Going into the fall though, I wanted to take today's new episode of Fearless to tell you all about my book coming out this October, Stand Steady: A Fearless Faith in a Compromising Culture. For a number of reasons, I never planned on writing a book—in fact, a lot of my friends and family didn't even know I wrote Stand Steady until just a few weeks ago. But I couldn't seem to shake this question: What kind of woman will you choose to be? It's one that I first asked during a church service, and it became the heart of everything I wrote about in Stand Steady. Because following Jesus will always cost us something. Standing steady in our faith requires preparation, and we can't always wait until the storm hits to prepare. So, who will you choose to be when the world shifts, when the culture compromises, when following Jesus becomes uncomfortable? Those are the questions I'm asking today and all throughout this new season of Fearless. Will you stand steady? That's my prayer for you, and it's my prayer for myself as we head into this new season and all God has for us. Preorder Stand Steady here: https://bookstore.billygraham.org/stand-steady.html?pk_vid=67ef3ffeb412b961178673680342e652.

How do you give difficult feedback without damaging trust?Katie O'Brien Ceccarini, author of Fearless Feedback: Everything Managers Have Never Been Taught About Feedback and founder of Endurance Management Coaching, brings two decades of experience leading, managing, and training teams. She shares how leaders can prepare for hard conversations, navigate emotional reactions, and say what needs to be said while preserving the relationship.Katie explains that fearless feedback starts before we ever choose the right words. It begins with our mindset, the strength of the relationship, and the intention we bring into the conversation. When we believe in the other person's ability to grow, we are more likely to communicate with conviction, clarity, and care. She also shows us how to stay present when feedback brings up defensiveness, emotion, silence, or resistance. Instead of reacting to what we see on the surface, we can get curious about what may be happening underneath. We can acknowledge someone's experience without abandoning the message, and we can refocus the conversation without turning it into a debate. When we strengthen our mindset, relationships, and delivery, we can give feedback with greater courage, build trust through difficult moments, and create conversations that help people grow.Key Takeaways:Prepare Your Mindset for Feedback: Explore how the beliefs you bring into a conversation can shape how your message is received.Strengthen the Relationship First: Consider how trust and safety can create a stronger foundation for honest feedback.Open the Conversation Well: Discover how a thoughtful headline can make difficult feedback easier to hear and engage with.Navigate Difficult Reactions: Examine how the HEAR framework can help you respond when feedback triggers defensiveness, emotion, or resistance.Make a Better Second Choice: Learn how noticing your first reaction can help you approach challenging feedback conversations with greater courage.Resources MentionedThe Inspire Your Team to Greatness assessment (the Courage Assessment) - In less than 10 minutes, find out where you're empowering and inadvertently kills productivity, and get a custom report that will tell you step by step what you need to have your team get more done. What if many of the cultural and political shifts we're watching today didn't begin yesterday—but have been developing for decades? In this episode of Fearless with Mark & Amber, we sit down with author and researcher Gary Kah, whose firsthand experiences inside organizations pursuing global governance led him to spend decades documenting the globalist movement and its political, educational, and spiritual implications. Gary's story begins with his parents' experiences in Europe during World War II. As a young Christian learning what his family had endured under Hitler and communism, Gary made a promise to God: if anything like that ever began happening in America, he would take a stand. Years later, while serving as the Europe and Middle East trade specialist for the State of Indiana, Gary says he encountered government officials who were remarkably open about their support for global government. That journey eventually brought him into the World Constitution and Parliament Association and another organization within government emergency-management circles, where he says he gained firsthand insight into the people, organizations, and ideology working toward a global system of governance. We discuss the connection Gary sees between globalism, Marxism, public education, the New Age movement, Alice Bailey, Lucius Trust, and the weakening of America's Judeo-Christian foundations. We also examine why ideas once discussed behind closed doors increasingly appear openly in our institutions and culture. Gary reminds believers that even when the cultural battle appears overwhelming, Christians are still called to stand for righteousness, speak truth, stand in the gap, and remain faithful to Christ. Our hope isn't found in a political system or human institution. Our hope is Jesus Christ. As Gary reminds us from 2 Timothy 1:7, “God did not give us a spirit of fear, but a spirit of power, of love, and of a sound mind.” This is a conversation about understanding the times without becoming consumed by them—and being found faithful until Christ returns. She's helmed seven editions of the Best Women's Travel Writing—the celebrated Traveler's Tales anthology—including the latest, released on June 9th. Over the years, she's read hundreds of submissions a year from women around the world and distilled them into one essential collection. So host Aislyn Greene sits down with Lavinia to talk about what two decades of editing these stories has taught her about how women explore the world, and why amplifying those voices matters more than ever right now. What happens after you've been saved? How do you stop allowing your past to define you and begin truly walking in the freedom Christ has given you? In this episode of Fearless with Mark & Amber, we're joined by Sarina Tarantino from San Jose Church of Christ in Jacksonville, Florida, for a conversation about testimony, discipleship, biblical truth, parenting, the Church, and what it means to live out our identity in Christ. Sarina shares how hearing our testimony challenged her to reconsider the way she viewed her own past—and the importance of allowing our children to see not a picture of perfection, but a picture of what Jesus Christ can do in a surrendered life. We also talk about something the Church desperately needs to recover: following Christ is not a spectator sport. Pastors are called to equip the saints, but we are the saints. Every believer has a role in sharing the Gospel, discipling others, serving the Body of Christ, and faithfully stewarding the people God has placed in their lives. And none of us can outsource our relationship with God. Good preaching, Christian podcasts, conferences, and biblical teachers can encourage us, but they cannot replace personally opening the Word of God and allowing the Holy Spirit to renew our minds. Later in the conversation, we discuss why confronting difficult cultural realities matters, what Sarina learned after watching the Fearless Features documentaries, and why knowing the truth equips Christians to stand rather than live in fear. Finally, we share more about our upcoming September 12 event in Jacksonville, Florida, where Mark and Amber will share their personal testimonies and talk about marriage, family, discipleship, identity in Christ, prodigals, and finding freedom from the things that once held us captive. Because your past may be part of your story—but Jesus gets the final word. LINKS & RESOURCES September 12 Jacksonville, FL Event / Registration:

DiJonai Carrington bloodied Sophie Cunningham's mouth — Flagrant 2, ejected — and Stephanie White softened intent for the aggressor. This is the same Fever coach who lectured America about racism and homophobia after Alyssa Thomas drove a fist into Caitlin Clark's throat. The WNBA should suspend Carrington. Indiana should fire White. Monica McNutt's “sisterhood.” Jemele Hill and Cari Champion on one line. Andraya Carter's phony fairness. Syd Colson's “trans foul.” WHITE PRIVILEGE after the blood. This is the caste system inside the WNBA — who gets protected, who gets sorted, and why the enforcers still have jobs. Fearless. Mike Sando's ranking of Shedeur Sanders is the latest sign that the Deion Sanders era is going to end the same as Stringer Bell's in "The Wire." The Athletic's 2026 QB tiers aren't kind to Shedeur, and neither is the projection for Coach Prime's Colorado football team. Today's monologue maps Deion to Stringer Bell and Shedeur to Cheese Wagstaff from "The Wire:" racial grift collapsing, Nadeska rebrand, Slim Charles depth chart; Ryan Clark, Rob Parker, Nick Saban commercial gap, Big 12 chalk outline. Caitlin Clark, Sophie Cunningham, A'ja Wilson, Paige Bueckers, and the Cleveland Sirens — Jason Whitlock argues the WNBA isn't selling basketball. It's anti-male reality TV with a jump shot. Hollywood's show bible; the manufactured mantle for Wilson; Bueckers as the approved co-star; Clark and Cunningham as the wrong chick flick ("Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" vs. "Thelma & Louise"); and coaches reading the ally script while male identity gets marked optional. The product isn't a pick-and-roll. The product is the sermon. ➢Today's Sponsors PreBorn has helped rescue more than 400,000 babies, and every single day, they continue that work by offering mothers something powerful and life-changing: an ultrasound. Olivia Miles homeschooled Caitlin Clark on Sunday, dropping 28 as the Minnesota Lynx beat the Indiana Fever 108-100. Kelsey Mitchell poured in 37; Courtney Williams added 27. Miles' clinic overshadowed the political circus trailing Sophie Cunningham and put a real culture on the floor against the Caitlin Cult's victim narrative. Iowa built a star in a cocoon — Minnesota held class. If Clark takes the pen back and aims her energy at the band, not the crowd and the refs, this loss helps her the rest of the season. ➢Today's Sponsors Go to https://hometitlelock.com/fearless and use promo code FEARLESS to get a FREE title history report and a FREE TRIAL of their Triple Lock Protection!
