The year 2020 was a very strange one ... for all of us.  The world for all intents and purposes, felt like it was put on pause. COVID-19 was really the only thing on our minds.  And because of it, even movie theatres and the film industry as a whole struggled.   Filmmakers began making films that were more personal, more meaningful, ones that represented how we felt as a society during these trying times.  Nomadland was one of those films that struck a chord with many, and definitely with the Academy.  A story of people, referred to as Nomads, trying to find themselves after suffering the post-2008 economic crisis.  The film is moving, provocative, and definitely visually stunning. However, in retrospect, deserving of the top award for 2020 at the Academy Awards.  If now, what was the best film of that year? Listen to film critic Jack Ferdman's take on 2020, and hear what film he would give the Rewatch Oscar of 2020 to.Download, listen, and share ALL Rewatching  Oscar episodes.SUBSCRIBE and FOLLOW Rewatching Oscar:Website: https://rewatchingoscar.buzzsprout.comApple Podcasts/iTunesSpotifyGoogle PodcastsiHear RadioPodchaserPodcast AddictTuneInAlexaAmazon Overcasts Podcast Addict Player FMRSS Feed: https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/1815964.rssWebsite: https://rewatchingoscar.buzzsprout.comSocial Media Links: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, InstagramShare your thoughts and suggestions with us through:Facebook Messanger or email us atjack@rewatchingoscar.comMusic by TurpacShow Producer: Jack FerdmanPodcast Logo Design: Jack FerdmanMovie (audio) trailer courtesy of MovieClips Classic TrailersMovie (audio) clips courtesy of YouTubeSupport us by downloading, sharing, and giving us a 5-star Rating.  It helps our podcast continue to reach many people and make it available to share more episodes with everyone.Tags: OscarsAcademy AwardsBest PicturewinnermoviesfilmreviewRewatching Oscarpodcast

The Coen Brothers are master of filmmaking. They can make a crime film funny but at the same time they don't hide the bleakness of what can happen when a insecure/beta car salesman purposely sets up to have his wife kidnapped for ransom. What can't go wrong, right? "Fargo" puts us in a cold world where not only is there crime but life also awaits. I love the cast of this film, they made the screenplay into their own. I love the fact that visuals in the film help push the story forward as well giving us moments of intesity. it's very hard to pull of when you have focus on crime solving and also comedy within the space. Life, as bleak as it can be, as crazy as you can get, you can get by with some laughter. It's important to laugh. It's also important to be true to yourself, try not to overdo things. As simple as this film is, the message is very powerful. It's bittersweet how it's pulled off especially in the third act of the film. The Coen Brothers love telling stories and somehow they were able to tell short stories that are able to add to an overall crime film. I want to add how visuals in this film give a good perspective of life because they didn't need to add landscape shots to describe locations but they did. It's needed for the viewer to see what world they're in. They know how to raid a hotel and show us a guilty, grown man cry as he's being arrested. As funny as that sounds, it's actually very disturbing.Four out of four tokes.

Vanessa Kirby - Pieces of a Woman 3. Carey Mulligan - Promising Young Woman 4. Viola Davis - Ma Rainey's Black Bottom 5. Frances McDormand - Nomadland
 - In 2021 Frances McDormand won her third Best Actress Oscar for Nomadland. McDormand currently has the second most Best Actress Oscars won to date with three (Katharine Hepburn has four). Nomadland stars McDormand as Fern, a woman who packs her van and sets off on the road exploring a life outside of conventional society as a modern-day nomad. Vanessa Kirby plays a woman who loses her child in a home birth. She has some amazing scenes with Ellen Burstyn (really thought she should have been nominated for Best Supporting Actress). Carey Mulligan received her second Best Actress nomination for Pieces of a Woman (first for An Education). Andra Day made her screen debut in The US vs. Billie Holiday delivering an exceptional performance with incredible vocals. She could have won this Oscar but the movie/script really fails her. Viola Davis stars as Ma Rainey, famous blues singer, in a very well acted but terribly boring film (sorry not sorry) Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. Join host Kyle Brownrigg with guest host Ted Morris as they discuss.

The film takes place over the course of three days and two nights in an agrarian Mennonite society where every woman- and most girls- has experienced a sexual assault and a gaslighting about it (it was a ghost, it was the devil, you made it up... infuriating). The women meet in a barn to discuss their options. Vintage Sand

Episode 39 finds your intrepid Team Vintage Sand doing a deep dive into the work of one of our most promising young filmmakers, 2020 Best Director Oscar-winner Chloe Zhao. Although she has only done four feature films to this point, she has already established a distinctive painterly and brilliant visual style, and, as no less an authority than Frances McDormand put it, has shown herself able to successfully walk the line between sentiment and sentimentality. We take an auteurist approach to Zhao's work by dividing her young career into two distinct parts. She began with two very low-budget films, Songs My Brother Taught Me and The Rider, using non-actors essentially playing themselves. Notably, both were set in the unique and wonderful landscape of the Pine Ridge Reservation in the Black Hills of South Dakota, a location that is becoming to Zhao what Monument Valley was to John Ford. Her Oscar winner, Nomadland, was a transitional work, featuring old pros McDormand and David Strathairn mixed in with non-actors. This unexpected success then led to her chance to be part of the MCU with Eternals, a huge-budget film that many connoisseurs of the genre consider to be the worst of the Marvel films. So our fundamental question is simple: how do the visual and thematic elements that made her first two films so uniquely personal and intimate carry over into the second pair of films, done on a much different scale? As frequently happens, there is some dissent within Team Vintage Sand. Michael, and to a lesser extent John argue, as do many, that Zhao's films suffer from her insistence on non-actors, and that Songs and The Rider would have been better had Zhao populated her film with professional actors. I'm not bothered as much by it, but I see where they're coming from, especially since they are both trained actors. That being said, there is no doubt that Zhao has a phenomenal eye and that she is an artist to be closely watched; for us, she is one of the few young directors who has earned a lifetime ticket, which simply means that if she's directing a film, we'll be there opening weekend. So sit back, enjoy, and we'll see you all down the road.

Chloé Zhao's career has rocketed in recent years with the success of "Nomadland," as she's become only the second woman to win an Oscar for Best Picture and Best Director, and the first woman of color to do so. Fresh off the blockbuster Marvel Cinematic Universe's "Eternals" she joins the podcast to talk about the role of her adopted hometown in shaping her success, as well as a few teasers about her coming projects. We learn that Frances McDormand lived in "Vanguard," the famous white van in the film, in Zhao's Ojai driveway, and was costumed by Ojai thrift stores. It helped her transform into the character of Fern, the widowed woman who lives on the periphery of the American Dream in the aftermath of the Great Recession, traveling from one low-wage job to another. It earned McDormand her third Oscar. Zhao grew up in China as a devotee of manga - the action-oriented graphic novels - that prepared her for the MCU role, but it was her love of western landscapes, so vividly on display in her first three films, "Songs from my Brother," "The Rider" and "Nomadland," that has characterized her work. We talk about coming projects, her artistic process and influences, and how she moved to Ojai just days before the Thomas Fire devastated the town. In fact, it was Ojai's resilience and strength in aftermath that confirmed for her choice to move here. Our wide-ranging talk included Bass Reeves, Dracula and Mongolia. We did not talk about Lincoln logs, Ukrainian air defense systems or taimen fishing.

She's gotta have it” (1986).

Chloe Zhao made history at the 93rd Academy Awards, becoming the first woman of color to win best director and just the second woman to win the award. At the in-person event in Los Angeles' Union Station on April 25, Zhao won the directing Oscar for Nomadland, joining Kathryn Bigelow, who won in 2009 for The Hurt Locker. “I'm extremely lucky to be able to do what I love for a living,” she said backstage. “This win means more people get to live their dreams. I'm extremely grateful.” This was the only year in the awards' 93-year history with two female nominees: Zhao and Promising Young Woman director Emerald Fennell. Zhao's film, starring Frances McDormand, tells the story of a woman in her 60s and other transient workers in the American West. The film won best picture and McDormand took home the award for best actress. Wearing braids and sporting white tennis shoes, Zhao thanked her entire cast and crew. She also paid homage to those who inspired her to “keep going.” “This is for anyone who has the faith and the courage to hold onto the goodness in themselves and hold onto the goodness in each other, no matter how difficult it is to do that,” she said during her acceptance speech. “This is for you. You inspire me to keep going.” (AP) This article was provided by The Japan Times Alpha.

Nomadland is a 2020 American drama film based on the 2017 non-fiction book Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century by Jessica Bruder. The film is written, edited, produced, and directed by Chloé Zhao, awarded the Oscar for best director in 2021, and stars Frances McDormand (who is also a producer on the film) as a vandwelling working nomad who leaves her hometown after her husband dies and the sole industry closes down, to be "houseless" and travel around the United States. David Strathairn also stars in a supporting role. A number of real-life nomads appear as fictionalized versions of themselves, including Linda May, Swankie, and Bob Wells. Nomadland premiered on September 11, 2020, at the Venice Film Festival, where it won the Golden Lion. It also won the People's Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival. It had a one-week streaming limited release on December 4, 2020, and was distributed by Searchlight Pictures in selected IMAX theaters in the United States on January 29, 2021, and simultaneously in theaters, and streaming digitally on Hulu, on February 19, 2021. The film was praised for its direction, screenplay, editing, cinematography, and performances, especially of McDormand. It was the third-highest rated film of 2020 on Metacritic, which found it to be the most frequently ranked by critics and publications as one of the best films of the year. At the 93rd Academy Awards, it won Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress for McDormand, from a total of six nominations; Zhao became the first woman of color to win Best Director, while McDormand became the first person to win Academy Awards as both producer and performer for the same film. It also won Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Director at the 78th Golden Globe Awards, four awards including Best Film at the 74th British Academy Film Awards, and four awards including Best Film at the 36th Independent Spirit Awards. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/popcorn-junkies/message

Winning a best Actress in a leading role for her part in our movie this week, Frances McDormand, turns out a rousing portrayal of a woman choosing a nomadic lifestyle in favour of setting down roots in a real estate community. Though nomadic lifestyles have become more possible than not in today's Covid-19 world, McDormand's stunning performance is her third Oscar in her career, just one short of the record held by Katharine Hepburn, while award winning, and the director, Chloé Chou, not only won accolades in China, she picked up an Oscar for this movie as well. Given that Nomadland won so many Oscars, Claudia and Victor decide to put the Oscar winning movie through its paces to see if the movie deserved a best movie, Oscar. Remember, tune in every Friday to hear whether Claudia and Victor think you should plunk down money on a particular movie or not.
