The recently released 2007 draft federal indictment against Jeffrey Epstein reveals the full scope of charges that were prepared but never filed. The 56-page document outlined 32 felony counts involving 19 girls under the age of 18, spanning a six-year period from 2001 to 2007. The charges included conspiracy to defraud the United States, sex trafficking of minors, enticement of a minor, and facilitating unlawful travel for illicit sex acts. Twenty-five of these counts carried potential life sentences with mandatory minimums between 10 and 15 years. Federal prosecutors in West Palm Beach had assembled exhaustive evidence and prepared an 82-page prosecution memo to support the indictment. Instead of facing these charges, Epstein's high-priced legal team, including Ken Starr and Alan Dershowitz, negotiated a plea deal with US Attorney Alex Acosta that allowed Epstein to plead guilty to just two state charges. He served only 13 months in county jail with work release privileges, leaving the facility daily to work from his office. The draft indictment details how Epstein targeted vulnerable teenage girls, many from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, and operated a systematic sex trafficking operation with the assistance of employees whose names remain redacted. The document reveals threats made to victims and a pattern of abuse that could have resulted in over 100 years of prison time if prosecuted. Hawk examines the legal framework, the specific charges, and the failure of justice that allowed Epstein to continue abusing minors for another 11 years until his 2019 arrest and death. The comments stand in contrast to Trump's remarks during the second presidential debate in 2016, when he said there was "no president in history who has been more abusive to women than Bill Clinton."   Trump announces a shift in his mass deportation policy, saying that they no longer want to force themselves into cities where they are not wanted. My guest this week is game developer Tim Cain, who's shown us what the end of the world looks like. Back in the mid-90s, Tim was working with a small team on a post-apocalyptic game with a 1950s aesthetic — a weird mix of styles that Tim was worried would bomb so hard he expected his next job would be serving fast food. But … that game was Fallout, which became a massive phenomenon, with multiple sequels and a TV series based on the game that just wrapped its second season. One of the recurring themes of Fallout is people stepping out of bomb shelters and discovering there's more to life than self-isolation.
