The devastating Southern California wildfires in early 2025 destroyed hundreds of residences and businesses. Lives were upended with the rebuilding for some still underway. Today's guest is Rabbi Daniel Sher, who along with his fellow clergy and congregants at Kehillat Israel in Pacific Palisades saw his family destroyed by the flames. Miraculously, the synagogue was spared any damage and has served as an oasis for those in need, both materially and spiritually. If you're still waiting for someone to save democracy, Mona Eltahawy has news for you: you are the one you've been waiting for. A fearless Egyptian-American journalist and author of The Seven Necessary Sins for Women and Girls and her latest book Bloody Hell!: Adventures in Menopause From Around the World, Eltahawy is no stranger to authoritarianism. While covering Arab Spring protests in Cairo, she was seized by Egyptian security forces and sexually assaulted and beaten, her arm and hand broken. Now, she warns, America is slipping toward the same strongman rule in Egypt. And too many are sleepwalking through it. Eltahawy's prescription is feminism that terrifies, carried out by both women and men. Because anyone can be a feminist. This is feminism as revolution. As she puts it, “There is no revolution without rage, and there is no revolution without risk.” Her work urges women to embrace power, ambition, anger, and militant self-defense, not to provoke, but to defend. And for their allies to support them. Learn to protect yourself. Teach your daughters common-sense self-defense and how to take up space. Her hope is that more of us, especially white women in the U.S., will stop cosplaying resistance and start embodying it. “The Handmaid's Tale is not a documentary,” she says. “Get out of the TV and into the streets.” EVENTS AT GASLIT NATION: August 25 4pm ET – Join the Gaslit Nation Book Club for a powerful discussion on The Lives of Others and I'm Still Here, two films that explore how art and love endure and resist in the face of dictatorship. We're switching it up a little bit this episode, as the Booker Prize Long List has just been released and it's fun to talk about what they've chosen — plus, the judges this year are really interesting! These are "chosen from 153 submissions, celebrates the best works of long-form fiction by writers of any nationality, written in English and published in the UK and/or Ireland between 1 October 2024 and 30 September 2025." Some of the books we've read, some we've just heard about, some we have no idea about. Play along! Here's the list as we tackle it: - "Seascraper," by Benjamin Wood, which is not available in the U.S. - "The Rest of our Lives," by Ben Markovitz, which is not available in the U.S. (though Ben is from the U.S. and used to be a professional basketball player) - "Audition," by Katie Kitamura, which is so out there that Hannah legit doesn't know how to talk about it. No one seems to know what's happening with this book. - "Endling," by Maria Reva, which we talked about quite a bit in EP92 (not 94, as Sam says on the pod, for no good reason), and is a substantive, interesting, weird novel, but maybe not Sam's favorite. - "Flashlight," by Susan Choi, a National Book Award winner, which Hannah started out super excited about, but then her fervor sort of faded... There's some great stuff in here about Japan-Korea history and the immigrant story, in general. - "The Land in Winter," by Andrew Miller, which Hannah hasn't read, but she does remember that "The Optimists" was big and she meant to read it. - "Love Forms," by Claire Adam, who was published by Sarah Jessica Parker, who also happens to be a judge! But we're sure it's a coincidence. "Like a Claire Keegan novel written by Elizabeth Strout," apparently. - "Universality," by Natasha Brown, which we know is short and is all about words and meaning. - "Misinterpretation," by Ledia Xhoga, which is similarly about words and meaning. We don't know much, really. But there seems to be a theme here. - "The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny," by Kiran Desai, who has a Booker Prize under her belt. This book is going to be big. - "One Boat," by Jonathan Buckley, which is about a murder and a love affair on a Greek island. - "The South," by Tash Aw, which is this year's young gay love story, Hannah thinks, though she's not sure, but it is the first of a quartet of novels, "a reimagined epic for our times." - "Flesh," by David Szalay, which is a stylish Hungarian novel, a coming-of-age sort of thing.

Stefan Collini, FBA. Professor Emeritus of Intellectual History and English Literature, University of Cambridge. The Donald Winch Lectures in Intellectual History.University of St Andrews. 11th, 12th & 13th October 2022.In the course of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, universities expanded to include a wide range of what came to be regarded as academic ‘disciplines'. In Britain, the study of ‘English literature' was eventually to become one of the biggest and most popular of these subjects, yet it was in some ways an awkward fit: not obviously susceptible to the ‘scientific' treatment considered the hallmark of a scholarly discipline, it aroused a kind of existential commitment in many of those who taught and studied it. These lectures explore some of the ways in which these tensions worked themselves out in the last two hundred years, drawing on a wide range of sources to understand the aspirations invested in the subject, the resistance that it constantly encountered, and the distinctive forms of enquiry that came to define it. In so doing, they raise larger questions about the changing character of universities, the peculiar cultural standing of ‘literature', and the conflicting social expectations that societies have entertained towards higher education and specialized scholarship.Handout - Lecture 3: Syllabuses1. ‘“English”, including Anglo-Saxon and Middle English along with modern English, including what we ordinarily call the “dull” periods as well as the “great” ones, is an object more or less presented to us by nature.'2. ‘In the 1880s, an exciting duel between two great publishing houses brought the price of the rival National and World Libraries (Cassell's and Routledge's, respectively) down to 3d in paper and 6d in cloth. And not only were prices cut: the selection of titles was greatly enlarged, the old standbys - Milton, Pope, Cowper, Thomson, Burns, Goldsmith, and the rest - being joined by many other authors who had seldom or ever appeared in cheap editions.'3. ‘Sir John Denham (1615-1668) is familiar from the oft-quoted couplet in his poem of Cooper's Hill, the measured and stately versification of which has been highly praised. He died an old man in the reign of Charles II, with a mind clouded by the sudden loss of his young wife, whom he had married late in life. John Cleveland (1613-1659), author of the Rebel Scot and certain vigorous attacks on the Protector, was the earliest poetical champion of royalty. Butler is said to have adopted the style of his satires in Hudibras. Colonel Richard Lovelace (1618-1658) ....'4. ‘Poetry: More advanced poems from Chaucer (e.g. The Prologue), Shakespeare, Spenser, Milton, Pope, Wordsworth, Tennyson, or from selections such as The Golden Treasury; Shakespeare, (Histories, Comedies or easier Tragedies). Prose: Plutarch's Lives, Kinglake, Eothen, Borrow, Lavengro, Ruskin, Sesame and Lilies, Frowde [sic; ?Froude], selected short studies, Modern prose Comedies (e.g. Goldsmith and Sheridan), Selections from British Essayists (e.g. Addison, Lamb, Goldsmith), Macaulay, Essays or selected chapters from The History.'5. ‘In the 1930s favourite Higher Certificate set books and authors among the various Boards include: The Faerie Queene, Marlowe's Faustus, Bacon's essays, Sidney's Apologie for Poetrie, Hakluyt, The New Atlantis, Shakespeare, Chaucer, Milton, Lamb, Carlyle, Pope, Dryden, Scott and the Romantic poets. These texts and authors changed hardly at all between 1930 and 1950 (and represent a very similar situation to that of 1900-1910).'6. ‘An Honours Degree in English Language and Literature at present entails, in every University in England, some knowledge both of Latin or Greek at the outset, and of Old English later.' On August 5 in Dharali, a Himalayan village near the Gangotri pilgrimage route, steady rain was followed by the ballooning of a river that destroyed homes and futures. It wasn't the first such disaster in this region. It began with regular monsoon rain tapping on roofs, creating thin streams down the hillsides. Hours later, a wall of water, rock and mud tore through Dharali. Nestled in Uttarakhand's upper reaches near Gangotri, Dharali lies close to a sacred source of the Ganga River. But on that day, the river smashed into homes, ripped apart roads and swept away everything in its path. Families fled with nothing. Lives were lost. The Himalayas are young mountains that shift, crack and shed rock. But our choices make them more dangerous: carving roads into fragile slopes, building too close to rivers and the warming the climate. In this episode, a scientist explains the forces shaping the mountains, and an environmentalist shows how our actions magnify the risk. Together, they trace the path from an ordinary day's rain to a disaster and reveal how to stop the next tragedy before it strikes. Our show opens with Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata, a favorite of philosopher Kate Manne, one of the sharpest minds dissecting power, privilege, and the politics of gender. Kate is a professor at Cornell University and the author of groundbreaking books like Down Girl, Entitled, and her latest, Unshrinking, which takes on fatphobia with the same fearless clarity she brings to misogyny and moral philosophy. Her work is a lifeline for understanding how injustice is baked into our culture, and how we can start dismantling it. If you've ever felt the weight of double standards, moral policing, or body shame, Kate Manne has words that will crack open your world and help put it back together stronger. Hi there, Loyal Readers. Before launching into today's issue, I've got three updates:* A big welcome to all the new subscribers from The Electric Typewriter. Thank you for trying out Article Club! I've been following TEW for 10+ years. It's a great curated resource of outstanding articles. * This week on the podcast, Melinda and I chat about her foster puppy, Melinda's Grief Corner, and our first impressions of this month's article of the month, “They Burn Books to Burn Us Too,” by Saint Trey W. Hope you take a listen.* Speaking of our article of the month, here's more information about it. I warmly invite you to join our discussion on Sunday, August 24, at 2:00 pm PT. All you need to do is click the button below to sign up.All right, let's get to today's issue. One reason I do Article Club is to read and share articles that push my empathy. This week's lead article, “Transitional Period,” did exactly that. Written by Kai Cheng Thom, the piece is about parents who say hateful things about their trans kids. As a trans person, Kai can't accept their hostility. As a therapist, however, she responds with compassion, understanding that their sentiments, though hurtful and wrongheaded, are an expression of grief. “Their anger and bitterness are often a disguise for a deep wellspring of fear and shame around the parental terror of having failed your child,” she writes. If you feel safe to read the article, I encourage you to. I'd love to hear your thoughts about it.If reading about parents of trans kids is too much or doesn't interest you, never fear. I have three other pieces ready for your attention. They are articles about:* a woman who works four jobs and still can't make ends meet* a program that pays young people $50 a week, no strings attached* a policy that forever bans anyone 25 years old and under from buying vapesHope you enjoy this week's issue. As always, thank you for your readership and your support of Article Club. If you appreciate the newsletter, I'd be honored if you shared it with a friend or colleague. Have a great weekend ahead!1️⃣ Transitional PeriodKai Cheng Thom writes with a generosity of spirit in this thought-provoking piece.Between the ages of sixteen and thirty-one, I worked in the overlapping fields of grassroots queer community-building, social work and clinical child and family therapy. During that time, I worked with queer and trans youth and their families in a drop-in centre, a psychiatry department, a sexuality clinic, and a community-based therapy program. A core theme I encountered across all those contexts was the grief that many parents of trans youth experience. These parents could not find a way to love their kids as they were, instead mourning who they had thought their children would be. This grief was often paired with anger toward the LGBTQ2S+ community, which some parents framed as having “stolen their kids.”Like many millennial queer activists, I had been trained by my peers to react to such sentiments by dismissing them outright as wrongheaded and problematic. Contemporary psychological theory and research findings assert that parental expressions of grief and anger over children coming out and transitioning can be significantly harmful to queer and trans youth. Yet in the role of a practitioner, sitting across from adults caught in a sea of rage, pain, fear and sadness, it was clear that it would be neither kind, nor effective in supporting the wellness of trans youth, to tell these parents to just get over themselves. As I listened to them talk and looked into their eyes, I knew that their fears came from somewhere deep within. Those fears would not be assuaged through academic debate — they needed to be met with compassion in order to be transformed.By Kai Cheng Thom • Maisonneuve • 13 min • Gift Link2️⃣ Confessions of the Working PoorJeni Gunn works four jobs (security consulting, emergency management, private investigating, freelance writing) and still can barely pay the rent on her 500-square-foot basement apartment in British Columbia, Canada. It doesn't help that she's got $6.58 left in her checking account. In this unvarnished, straight-ahead account of her daily life, Ms. Gunn, who is 51 years old, illuminates the struggles that many people face to make ends meet. She acknowledges that dropping out of college, pursuing daycare as a profession, having a kid, and getting a divorce certainly did not help her chances at economic stability. But she wonders, Shouldn't there be more pathways for the working poor to meet their material needs?By Jeni Gunn • Macleans • 17 min • Gift Link3️⃣ How To Improve Kids' Lives? Give Them $50 A WeekMy students used to ask me, “Why do you get paid and we don't?” It was a fair question, and my answer never satisfied them. Too bad they were born too early, because now, several schools across the country are experimenting with giving students cash, $50 a week. The program, called The $50 Study, began at Rooted School in New Orleans five years ago. So far, the results are mixed. On the one hand, grades and attendance have not improved too much. But on the other hand, students have learned financial literacy skills, saving on average 15 percent of their income — a much higher rate than most American adults. What I find refreshing about The $50 Study is that the money comes unconditionally, no-strings-attached. “I don't think what we're doing is so radical. I believe this just works,” says Talia Livneh, Rooted's senior director of programs. “They deserve deep, deep trust that students and people know what's best for them.”By Neal Morton • The Hechinger Report • 8 min • Gift Link4️⃣ How To Get Kids To Stop Vaping? Ban It Forever.Want to get young people to change their behavior? One approach (the article above) is to give them what they want and offer them choice. Another approach (this article) is to take away what they want and offer them no choice. If you happen to want to buy cigarettes or vapes in Brookline, Massachusetts, and your identification says you were born on or after Jan. 1, 2000, you're out of luck. Sorry, no vapes for you, for the rest of your life. Sure, you can bop over to Boston, 10 minutes away, and get your fill, but still, Brookline's bold stance has elicited praise from health professionals and other cities. But in her reporting, writer Makena Gera is not so sure. Isn't this taking away young people's agency? How do we teach kids how to choose if we don't get them choices?By Makena Gera • Boston Magazine • 10 min • Gift LinkThank you for reading this week's issue. Hope you liked it.

16th-century Swiss physician Paracelsus was frustrated with established medical practice and academia and he was sometimes on the lam because of his beliefs. He wrote at length about the idea that items in the natural world carried “signatures” in their appearance that could tell you visually how they could be used medicinally. Research: Bennett, B.C. Courage often starts with saying the obvious out loud, unapologetically. Philosopher and author Kate Manne brings that rare, dangerous clarity, taking on the everyday cruelties of structural misogyny and the moral contortions America performs to pretend everything's fine. Manne, author of Down Girl: The Logic of Misogyny, Entitled: How Male Privilege Hurts Women, and Unshrinking: How to Face Fat Phobia, challenges how we understand injustice. It's not just “out there.” It's built into our systems, our norms, even our language. We don't need to wait for sweeping reforms to act with integrity. Real change begins with small, daily acts of moral attention. What do we excuse? Whose pain do we ignore? What stories do we let slide by unchallenged? Misogyny, Manne argues, isn't just about hatred; it's a control system. A mechanism of the patriarchy designed to punish women who won't conform. In Manne's hands, philosophy isn't abstract; it's a wrecking ball. A tool for exposing rot and naming the machinery of oppression. Her message is clear: transformation begins with how we think, how we speak, and how we show up, for ourselves and for each other. That's the real work of justice. And it belongs to all of us. Maybe women aren't bad at friendship — maybe we've just been handed a model that doesn't actually work. One that expects perfection, constant connection, and a whole lot of emotional labor... without any room for evolution, conflict, or change. In this episode, we're questioning that model and taking a deeper look at how friendship has changed — historically, culturally, and personally — with cultural historian Tiffany Watt Smith. Together, we explore how women have been portrayed as bad friends (by the media and by society), and how we've quietly been redefining friendship on our own terms. We talk about why friendship dips are normal, why disagreements aren't deal-breakers, and why being a “bad friend” might actually be a sign that you're showing up in a real, honest, human way. Because the goal isn't friendship that looks perfect from the outside. It's friendship that can bend, stretch, shift, and still hold. This conversation is part history lesson, part gut check, and all about rebuilding our relationships on something real. Launch Your Box Podcast with Sarah Williams | Start, Launch, and Grow Your Subscription Box
“Don't give up. Just keep moving forward.” - Alexia Haubert After making it to the top 1% of all Etsy sellers in the wedding category - the top 1%! - Lexie was on top of her game. Then came a global pandemic that shut down the wedding industry and Lexie's business. Lexie had to pivot and struggled to grow her business for a long time before recently reaching a big milestone. In this episode, Lexie's story will inspire you to keep going as you work toward your business goals. When the wedding industry slowly started coming back, Lexie introduced The Monogrammed Bride subscription box and started building her audience from scratch. She stayed consistent and continued to show up even though she saw very little in the way of results for a long time. When Lexie and I first talked, after a disappointing launch, I was surprised to see she had done everything I teach. She was doing all the things and she was doing them well. But she wasn't seeing results. We brainstormed and strategized, and Lexie continued working hard. And just recently - after seeing consistently steady growth for the last six months - Lexie hit her long-standing goal of 100 subscribers! So what did she do differently these past six months? She built a community - giving her subscribers something to feel they were a part of. She posted stories on Instagram - consistently. She created engaging posts featuring pictures of subscribers and their boxes. She started going LIVE much more consistently and, when she did, started building an audience who showed up for her and engaged with her during the LIVEs. She followed her subscribers back and engaged with their posts. She did tons of short video, finding cracks of time while sitting in her car waiting to pick her kids up from practices. She sent boxes to a small number of influencers from TikTok and Instagram - people with 1000-2000 followers who want to grow as influencers. She ran Facebook Ads - and has gotten really dialed in which drives the cost per engagement way down. Lexie analyzes her Ads every week and makes changes as needed. While we were talking, Lexie got subscriber #112! This growth in her business - this regular, recurring revenue - has lessened the financial stress Lexie has felt for the past couple of years. She is able to breathe and plan for even more subscribers as her business continues to grow. Lexie's message for anyone who feels overwhelmed or discouraged by the challenges they're facing in building their business? Don't give up. Just keep moving forward. Join me for this episode and get inspired by Lexie's determination to just keep going and never give up on her dream on her way to reaching and passing her goal of 100 subscribers. We had a lot to catch up on this week after missing last week's show: UFC 318 and Dustin Poirier's retirement fight; what the future holds now for Max Holloway; the recent booking of three UFC title fights — including Big Tommy Gas Hands against The Good Kid, Ciryl Gane; Jon Jones un-retiring to fight at the White House and being immediately told he won't be fighting at the White House; whether it's time for Bobby Knuckles to walk away and most importantly: if you attack Yoel Romero with a sword and he LIVES? He'll see you soon, boy! Plus, an update on Ben's travels and a spirited defense of the role of journalism in our society from … Brendan Schaub??? Learn more about your ad choices.
