It's always an honour to have an elder on the show and this week is no exception. Max Ogden, born in 1938, was a youngster during WWII and remembers camping and hunting rabbits with his father in Epping. An apprentice fitter and turner in the good old days, Max played for Preston in the VFA and has been a lifelong trade unionist. A long-time member of the Communist Party, these days Max is a short story author who has released a book titled ' A long view from the Left', a memoir of his time in Australia's trade union movement and the colourful characters he knew. It's always a treat to hear stories about the Australia of yore and we thank Max very much for being our guest this week.
I talk with Max Ogden, author of "A long view from the left" about his role in the union movement and his passion for bringing arts into the workplace and industrial democracy.
When learning to code, it's important to jump into the deep end every now and then to keep leveling up. Unfortunately it didn't work out in my favor when I gave a go to Node.js! The workshop I attended was a purposeful break from my learning plan. I'd love to include a clear & concise definition of Node.js here (intended for total newbies), but I still haven't found one! If you know of a good one please leave a comment below. Otherwise, here are some of the resources I found which provide a bit of context: Max Ogden's Understanding Node The Coding Train's What Is Node.js? You can do that by going to https://check.aec.gov.au/

Max Ogden is a developer, open government and CouchDB enthusiast from Portland, OR. One of his recent projects, PDXAPI, is a developer interface to civic geo datasets in Portland, OR. Max recently accepted a position as a Code for America fellow for their inaugural 2011 Code for America fellowship program. Embracing Tim O'Reilly's concept of 'Government as a Platform' is easier said than done. I want to share some of my lessons learned on actually building the 'platform'. My talk will include methods and best practices for both developers and non-developers to refer to when negotiating open government data contracts with local governments.
