Episode OverviewIn this Southwest Virginia Fishing Report on The Articulate Fly fly fishing podcast, host Marvin Cash checks in with guide Matt Reilly of Matt Reilly Fly Fishing for a candid late-spring conditions update covering the post-spawn transition, dirty water tactics and the seasonal arc ahead. Recorded amid rising, stained flows on the New River and surrounding drainages — following months of below-average flows — the episode captures a moment when Southwest Virginia smallmouth fishing is firmly in between patterns, and angler adaptability is the only reliable edge. Reilly addresses the dual pressure facing anglers right now: a post-spawn funk settling over fish on some waters while others remain slightly earlier in that arc, and high, off-color water shrinking reactive distances and pushing fish to the bottom. He details how an early crayfish molt — triggered by unusually warm water temps in the low-to-mid 70s weeks ahead of schedule — has shifted his focus away from streamer presentations and toward bottom-contact crayfish patterns on fish that are otherwise visible but unmovable on top. Reilly also previews the seasonal calendar ahead, sketching the transition through a late-May/June baitfish bite, crayfish activity and eventually the cleaner, lower-water conditions that make topwater the dominant game — typically not until around the Fourth of July. Guide availability closes the episode, with Reilly noting his summer calendar is fully booked and early October representing the next realistic opportunity for prospective clients.Key TakeawaysHow to identify the post-spawn funk by its signature symptom: cycling rapidly through multiple fly types with sporadic, pattern-less catches. Why bottom-contact crayfish patterns outperform streamers and topwater when smallmouth are locked down during an early crayfish molt. How to approach high, stained water when flows are elevated but not extreme — targeting the bottom rather than automatically moving to the banks, because fish can spread across mid-river structure when current isn't pushing them to the edges. Why an early summer crayfish molt can pull even cruising, visible fish away from topwater presentations and onto gravel-bar bottom feeding. When to expect the seasonal transition to more consistent patterns: a late-May/June baitfish bite followed by bug-fishing conditions that typically don't fully materialize until around the Fourth of July.Techniques & Gear CoveredReilly runs multiple rods in the boat simultaneously — a floating line with a topwater bug, an intermediate-tip with a streamer and a floater rigged with a crayfish — to rotate through presentations efficiently when no single pattern dominates. In dirty, elevated water he emphasizes making bottom contact as the primary directive, noting that smallmouth research documents a behavioral shift toward bottom-oriented hunting when turbidity increases. Crayfish patterns are the anchor of his current program given the early molt activity, with darker, high-contrast and flashier fly choices appropriate for off-color conditions. Streamer fishing remains part of the rotation but Reilly is candid that listening to what the fish show you — even when it conflicts with your instinct — is the overriding tactical discipline during transitional windows.Locations & SpeciesThe episode centers on Southwest Virginia's river systems, with the New River specifically mentioned as the water Reilly was guiding on the day of recording. The New is described as deteriorating during the conversation — elevated and stained from recent rainfall — but holding up better than surrounding rivers that Reilly characterizes as borderline blown out. Smallmouth bass are the sole target species discussed. Conditions at time of recording include water temperatures already touching the mid-70s — well ahead of the typical early June arrival of such temps — and flow levels running significantly below seasonal averages for the year before recent rains, creating a compressed, accelerated seasonal arc that has pushed crayfish molt timing and post-spawn transitions out of seasonal norms.FAQ / Key Questions AnsweredHow do you know when you're in the post-spawn funk and what do you do about it?Reilly identifies the funk by a tell-tale pattern: you start with one fly, catch one fish, slow down, switch flies, catch another, slow down again, and end the day with six wet flies of five different types drying on the boat bag. When that's happening, he leans on instinct — reading the water type in front of him and putting his best guess forward — while staying honest about whether a presentation isn't working or just needs more time. He acknowledges it's sometimes simply tough and you have to grind through it.Why would you target the bottom in high, stained water rather than moving to the banks? When water is elevated but not high enough to concentrate fish in bank-side slack water, smallmouth can spread broadly across mid-river structure — and increased turbidity shrinks reactive distances significantly. Reilly points to behavioral research showing smallmouth shift to bottom-oriented hunting in dirty water. Getting a fly to the bottom gives fish a plane they can reliably relate to even when visibility is poor, and on the day of recording it was the only approach consistently producing. What triggers a crayfish molt and why does it pull fish off topwater?Early warm water — Reilly observed low-to-mid-70s temperatures weeks ahead of the typical mid- to late-June timing — accelerates crayfish shedding their shells, making them soft and highly vulnerable. Even smallmouth that would otherwise be ideal topwater candidates were cruising shallow gravel bars but locked to the bottom, unwilling to come up. Once you see that behavior, Reilly says you have to accept it and feed them crayfish regardless of how tempting topwater looks. When does consistent topwater fishing typically kick in for Southwest Virginia smallmouth?Reilly frames late May through mid-June as a transitional window featuring a baitfish bite (non-game fish like darters and chubs spawning, creating forage) interspersed with molting crayfish activity. Reliable topwater conditions — when it becomes the path-of-least-resistance strategy rather than just a fun option — typically don't arrive until water temperatures and flows settle in the summer, usually around the Fourth of July, assuming conditions don't remain abnormally low and clear even sooner. What does Matt Reilly's fall guide calendar look like, and what should you expect booking-wise?As of this recording Reilly's summer is fully booked, with early October being the next available window. He describes October as a mixed bag: possible hurricane-driven high water and strong streamer fishing, or a continuation of summer patterns depending on the year — but consistently a period when big fish show up in the first couple weeks before his focus shifts entirely to musky season.Related ContentS8, Ep 29 – Fishing in Flux: Matt Reilly's Take on Spring Trends and TechniquesS8, Ep 23 – Low Water Chronicles: Matt Reilly on Pre-Spawn Smallmouth Strategies and Seasonal ShiftsS6, Ep 112 – Smallmouth Transitions and Musky Prep: Matt Reilly's Southwest VA UpdateS6, Ep 71 – Adapting to Heat and Low Flows: A Southwest Virginia Fishing Report with Matt ReillyConnect with Our GuestFollow Matt on Instagram.Follow the ShowFollow The Articulate Fly on Facebook, Instagram, Threads and YouTube.Follow our Substack newsletter for episode updates, tips and resources.Support the ShowShop through our Amazon link to support the podcast.Join our Patreon community to support the show.If you are in the industry and need help getting unstuck, learn more about our

In this episode, Reilly, Lilly, and Jenna tackle the most common and often most anxiety inducing question in the period recovery space: Do you actually have to gain weight to get your period back? As dietitians, we hear this question daily from athletes who are hoping they can recover their hormones without changing their body composition. We dive into the physiological reality of weight restoration and why your body's internal safety signals are often tied to specific energy stores. The conversation covers why looking like you are at a ‘normal' weight doesn't always mean you are at the weight your specific body needs to ovulate. We answer listener questions regarding the fear of uncontrollable weight gain, and whether there is ever a scenario where a period returns without the scale moving. Our goal for this episode is to provide a compassionate but evidence based reality check on the role of body mass in functional hypothalamic amenorrhea recovery. We discuss the importance of moving away from arbitrary BMI standards and instead focusing on biofeedback markers that indicate true hormonal health. Whether you are currently in the thick of the weight restoration process or you are hesitant to start because of the fear of body changes, this episode will help you understand what to expect from weight restoration during the period recovery journey. The Eat More Carbs Podcast is the go-to podcast for the GIRLIES who want to fuel their body properly with easy, fun, and simple nutrition! What if modern marketing's biggest problem isn't bad targeting… but safe creativity? In this PostPod episode of The Sleeping Barber Podcast, Marc Binkley and Vassilis Douros unpack their conversation with advertising legend Terry O'Reilly, and explore what today's marketers may have lost in the pursuit of optimization, dashboards, and defensible decisions. From pink flamingos and whistling beer campaigns to distinctive brand assets and the death of creative risk-taking, this conversation dives into why some of the most memorable advertising ideas in history would likely never survive a modern approval process. The discussion explores:Why breakthrough creative often sounds irrational before it worksHow organizations optimize for career safety instead of originalityThe danger of over-standardized digital advertisingWhy distinctive assets like jingles, mascots, and sonic branding still matterHow dashboards and optimization loops may be creating a “sea of sameness”Why great creative requires surprise, emotion, and a little discomfortThe tension between data, instinct, and long-term brand buildingHow AI may unintentionally push marketing even further toward the middleMarc and V also reflect on Terry's thoughts around agency relationships, creativity as a business multiplier, and the importance of giving agencies enough room to create work that actually gets remembered.Because maybe the future advantage in marketing won't belong to the brands with the best targeting…Maybe it'll belong to the brands brave enough to still be interesting.TakeawaysProduction quality can elevate a podcast's impact.Creative strategies should push boundaries to achieve greatness.Breakthrough ideas often seem irrational at first.Risk-taking is essential for memorable marketing campaigns.Digital platforms can dilute creativity with standardization.Feedback on creative work lacks structured metrics.Distinctive brand assets are declining in modern marketing.Data should complement, not replace, creative instincts.Surprise elements in campaigns capture audience attention.Career risk often stifles creative innovation.Chapters00:00 - Introduction and Podcast Production Insights03:00 - Creative Strategy and Agency Collaboration06:01 - The Importance of Breakthrough Ideas08:52 - Risk in Modern Marketing11:59 - The Role of Digital Platforms in Creativity15:13 - The Language of Creative Feedback17:56 Distinctive Brand Assets and Their Decline20:47 The Balance of Data and Creativity24:00 Conclusion and Reflections on the Conversation

There is a commercial in this episode that the president of Fibreglass tried to kill on a Thursday. By Sunday he had changed his mind, when his minister grabbed his arm and told him the pink panther ads were the funniest thing in advertising. That campaign went on to capture 70 percent of the Canadian insulation market.Every story Terry O'Reilly tells in this conversation is a campaign like that.A group of nuns who lost their habits and got an ad on the ceiling of a Sault Ste. Marie city bus. A Maine brewery that launched by promising never to mention its own name again, and trained a city to order beer by whistling. None of them would have survived a focus group. All of them built businesses. That's the spine of the episode: the work we remember almost never comes from the data. It comes from the moment a marketer trusts a calculated risk.Terry has hosted CBC's Under the Influence for two decades and directed roughly 14,000 commercials before that. He argues that the marketing industry has quietly traded its instincts for dashboards, and that the cost is most of the advertising we now scroll past without noticing. The episode lands on a single ask for any CMO listening: sit down with your agency tomorrow and tell them you want work that makes your palms sweat.Chapters00:00 - The Art of Advertising: Creativity vs. Data09:59 - Learning from Early Failures: A Journey in Advertising19:51 - Creative Campaigns: Success Stories and Lessons Learned29:58 - The Power of Distinctive Brand Assets40:04 - The Evolution of Advertising: From Jingles to Modern Mnemonics33:03 - Navigating Bureaucracy in Big Brands35:16 - The Importance of Effective Presentations41:15 - Creativity vs. Conventional Wisdom47:38 - Encouraging High Creativity in MarketingReferences• Under the Influence (CBC): https://www.cbc.ca/listen/cbc-podcasts/203-under-the-influence• Apostrophe Podcast Network: https://www.apostrophepodcasts.ca• Pirate Group: https://www.piratetoronto.com• Terry's books (Against the Grain, My Best Mistake, This I Know, The Age of Persuasion)• LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/terry-o-reilly• Website: terryoreilly.ca• Under the Influence: Available on CBC Listen, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and wherever podcasts are found
In the early years of the twentieth century, long before James Bond stepped onto the page, one man was at work as a new kind of spy. He crossed borders as easily as he changed names, slipped between governments and criminal networks, and dealt in secrets that could mobilise armies and shake empires. To some, he was a genius. To others, a liability waiting to be exposed. That man's name, or so we're told, was Sidney Reilly. He is often described as the real James Bond – the man whose nerve, charm, and audacity helped shape the modern image of the spy. But was Sidney Reilly truly the world's first modern super-spy? How much of his legend was built on real intelligence work, and how much on stories he told about himself? And in the end, did Reilly master the world of espionage… or did it finally turn his own methods against him? This is a Short History Of the Real James Bond. A Noiser podcast production. Hosted by John Hopkins. With thanks to Andrew Cook, author of Ace of Spies: The True Story of Sidney Reilly. Let me know what you think of this episode? Two weeks after moving overseas for volunteer work, Ian Riley and his wife are hit by a massive cyclone that turns daily life into a test of survival: horizontal rain blowing through the house, roads washed out, no pumped water, no working banks, and a long recovery where reliable power can take months. We talk through what it feels like to teach and serve in the aftermath when the adrenaline fades and the real challenge becomes endurance, uncertainty, and the decision to stay when others leave.Ian also takes us inside the unique communication reality of Samoa in the early 1990s. With no internet, limited phones, and little local reporting, news becomes word of mouth and rumor. Yet the same community networks can be remarkably effective, with handwritten notes carried village to village and responses returning the next morning. That contrast sparks a bigger conversation about how we handle incomplete information, culture shock, and the mental strain of not knowing what happens next. From there, we follow the thread of how chaos can shape a life. Ian shares why he wrote Encounter: A Journey Into Chaos, Culture And Compassion in present tense, designed to pull you into the moment and let you decide what you would do. He connects lessons learned in crisis to later work as an engineer and entrepreneur, including building world-first virtual cattle fencing, raising capital, scaling a startup, and eventually selling the company. If you care about faith under pressure, resilience after disaster, cross cultural volunteering, and finding purpose in uncertainty, you'll find a lot to sit with here. Interviews With The Hunting Masters - Big game Hunting podcast
Scouting Mule Deer with Henry Furguson | Finding Bucks, Reading Terrain, and Lessons That Transfer Show Notes Welcome back to the Days in the Wild Big Game Hunting Podcast, brought to you by Phoenix Shooting Bags. In this episode, I sit down once again with P.J. Reilly — one of the first guests I ever had on the podcast — to talk about mule deer, scouting, patterning bucks, and the lessons hunting teaches that carry over into every part of the game. We get into why scouting can be just as rewarding as the hunt itself, how to shorten the learning curve in brand-new country, and what it really takes to find and stay on mature bucks. P.J. breaks down how he approaches unfamiliar units, what terrain features consistently hold deer, and why looking at a buck from more than one angle can be the difference between killing him and losing him. We also talk about Arizona desert mule deer, OTC pressure, closures, hunting competition, and how increased pressure changes hunter behavior in the field. This episode is loaded with practical takeaways for anyone who wants to become a better scout, a better hunter, and a more disciplined thinker in the outdoors. In This Episode We Cover Why I stepped back from the podcast for a while Why not every passion needs to become a business The difference between going through the motions and creating meaningful content Why scouting is one of the most rewarding parts of hunting The satisfaction that comes from finding the animal before the hunt ever begins Hunting velvet bucks and why they are often more patternable The difference between scouting bucks in velvet, hard horn, and during the rut Why rut hunting mature mule deer can feel like finding a needle in a haystack How Arizona OTC closures are changing hunter pressure and competition Why quota-style closures may be creating more crowding and conflict How P.J. approaches scouting brand-new country Why elevation and glassing are still the foundation of his system Adjusting strategy when every high point is crowded with hunters Using alternative glassing angles to uncover what other hunters are missing Why it is important to understand not just where a buck is, but why he is there How to identify terrain features that consistently attract and hold deer How lessons learned in one unit or state can transfer to another The similarities between archery, rifle shooting, and hunting discipline Key Takeaways Scouting is more than finding animals — it's solving a puzzle. The real reward comes from learning how an animal uses the terrain, what brings it there, and how to use that knowledge later. If you want to consistently find deer, learn what makes a place attractive to deer. Escape routes, feed, security, and terrain that limits pressure all matter. One vantage point only tells part of the story. If you lose a buck, it may be because you only understood him from one angle. Multiple glassing angles reveal the bigger picture. Pressure changes everything. When hunters flood the obvious spots, success often comes from finding overlooked country that is just off the beaten path. The lessons transfer. Whether it's scouting deer, shooting a bow, or settling behind a rifle, success comes from learning a repeatable process and executing it consistently.

Earth Week is a good reminder of what we stand to lose — and what we're fighting to protect. The science is clear. Human activity is driving climate change. Record heat. Rising seas. Disappearing seasons. And yet too many politicians would rather protect billionaire energy interests than help working families lower their bills. Richard L Boyce emailed: "Hi Marc, On one of your recent podcasts, you mentioned putting together a show using music by people who just love to get together and play tunes. If you are still serious about that, I'm going to recommend you check out the sets put together by the Riley School of Irish Music (https://rileyirishmusic.com/school - tunes) in Cincinnati, OH. Our school has been going for more than 25 years. We meet on Saturdays in a local church and teach Irish music to both kids and adults. We have long provided the spark that's created local Irish bands that play for listening and for dances in our area. The School's run mainly by amateurs who simply love the music. The sets of tunes on our website are put together each quarter by the teachers at the school. We teach tunes by ear, and so we want our students to be have lots of opportunities to hear them. While they have been recorded for teaching, I think some of them are pretty good! I'm a flute teacher at the school, so I may be biased, as I'm on some the recordings. In any case, take a listen to some of the tracks and see if you like anything. Regards," Justine Mccarthy emailed: "Hello Marc, I recall from a podcast sometime in the past few months, you asked listeners to record themselves playing music and sending you the recordings: Is this Audio, video or either? We are a humble group but would love to send you a recording of our band "Wild Thyme' for the website. Do we just send it by email to you as an audiophile or video? I've been a Patron for several years, and listen while riding my training bike in the basement! Thank you so much for this priceless resource!"

We are THRILLED to invite to you join our Morbid Book Club in this bonus episode that is #sponsored by our friends at @ashleyofficial. This quarter, we are serving up forensic chills with a side of culinary chaos as we dive into Postmortem by Patricia Cornwell! And the best part? We're joined our new best friend Chef Reilly Meehan who helps us break it all down! #Morbidbookclub #ashleypartner We're unpacking the very first Dr. Kay Scarpetta novel that basically launched a thousand forensic obsessions, chatting about ALL of the gritty details, and some of the wild theories we came up with while reading! (I'm looking at you Lucy!) Chef Reilly brings a totally unique perspective (and some top-tier vibes), as we somehow manage to connect the worlds of food, storytelling, and forensic science. Expect hot takes, a little dark humor, and some truly unhinged tangents, because you know we can't stay on track for too long. So keep it weird… and keep turning those pages!
