In this episode of the Straight White American Jesus Sunday Interview, host Leah Payne speaks with award-winning journalist and historian Caleb Gayle about his acclaimed book Black Moses: A Saga of Ambition and the Fight for a Black State. Caleb Gayle is an award-winning journalist and professor at Northeastern University. He is the author of We Refuse to Forget: A True Story of Black Creeks, American Identity, and Power and a contributing writer at The New York Times Magazine. His work has also appeared in The Atlantic, TIME, The Guardian, Guernica, The New Republic, and The Boston Globe. Longlisted for the National Book Award for Nonfiction, named one of The Washington Post's Best Nonfiction Books of the Year, and selected as a New York Times Editors' Choice, Black Moses tells the remarkable story of Edward McCabe, a Black political leader who nearly succeeded in founding a Black-governed state in the Oklahoma Territory at the turn of the twentieth century. Together, Payne and Gayle explore McCabe's ambitious political vision, the racial politics of the American West, and the broader historical context of Reconstruction, westward expansion, and Indigenous displacement. The conversation also reflects on how forgotten stories like McCabe's challenge familiar narratives about American democracy, race, and political imagination. In this episode: The cinematic structure of Black Moses and how Gayle and his editor shaped the narrative Who Edward McCabe was and why his story has largely disappeared from mainstream American history McCabe's audacious plan to create a Black state in the Oklahoma Territory The Reconstruction-era search for Black self-determination and how McCabe's vision differed from projects in Liberia or Haiti The American West as a site of competing dreams—and conflicts—among Black settlers, white settlers, and Indigenous nations McCabe's political strategy: organizing, coalition building, and attracting Black migration to Oklahoma Why Oklahoma ultimately aligned itself with Jim Crow politics during statehood The unfinished project of American democracy and the importance of political imagination Black Moses: A Saga of Ambition and the Fight for a Black State by Caleb Gayle Can the Rodeo Save a Historic Black Town? A Canadian combat veteran, Kelsi Sheren, joins Allie to expose how Canada's taxpayer-funded Medical Assistance in Dying program is targeting the most vulnerable: veterans, the disabled, the mentally ill, the poor, children, and even babies. Kelsi shares shocking firsthand stories of veterans being offered death instead of care, explains how MAID quietly expanded from terminal illness to non‑terminal conditions, and details the financial incentives driving doctors, institutions, and advocacy groups she calls a “death cult.” They also connect the dots to the United States — naming the states where assisted suicide is already legal, the role of groups like Compassion & Choices, and how churches and religious leaders are being pressured to accept euthanasia as “compassion." 31: Chapter 31. The Story of El-ahrairah and the Black Rabbit of Inlé The opening quotation, from the poem 'Prospice' by Robert Browning, is on the theme of almost looking forward to death as a way of facing it. The story opens with the fairly predictable premise of King Darzin learning of how he was fooled into giving away his lettuces by El-ahrairah and Rabscuttle. There is an escalation, starting with the capture of Rabscuttle by Darzin. The rescue of Rabscuttle provokes Darzin into all out war against El-ahrairah's people. Their attack on the burrows is easily repelled. So the conflict quickly settles into a siege. Eventually the siege drives El-ahrairah to such despair that he cries to Frith that he would drive a bargain with anyone just to save them. Even Death itself. El-ahrairah decides to go to the Black Rabbit and offer him his life in exchange for those of his people. He decides to take Rabscuttle with him as a Messenger. Their journey to the realm of the Black Rabbit is explained in mystical terms, has no one can know how it was undertaken. Eventually they came to a "high place" with no grass. At last they reach a burrow tunnelled into the rock itself. They are about to enter this tunnel, when they realise that what they thought was part of the rock is actually the Black Rabbit of Inlè. The Black Rabbit asks them what they are doing there, as they are alive. When El-ahrairah explains that he has come to trade his life for those of his people, the Black Rabbit replies that there are no bargains to be had with him. The Black Rabbit makes it clear that they are his guests and offers to "entertain" them. First El-ahrairah dices with death, or at least the rabbit equivalent, in a game of Bobstones. Of course, he loses. And the price of that loss is for the Owsla take away his tail and whiskers painfully. The next day they go to see the Black Rabbit again as if nothing has happened. He repeats that they are free to go at anytime. He says that if they are going to stay then they should both tell a story. Of course this becomes a competition, with El-ahrairah proposing the same stakes as before. Only this time he will pay with his ears. This time he is mutilated while in a deep sleep, and when he wakes his ears are gone. A weeping Rabscuttle begs for them to leave, but El-ahrairah again refuses, telling him to fetch two dock leaves switch to replace his ears. El-ahrairah realises that the Black Rabbits Owsla can only hurt him with his consent and has no power to make him leave. He comes across a place guarded by Owsla who try to turn him away with fear. They point out in particular nearby burrow in which is kept the "white-blindness", or myxomatosis. Without giving himself time to think, El-ahrairah jumps into that Burrow in an attempt to catch the disease, so he can take it back and infect King Darzin's troops. He begins to make his way out of the Warren and is met by the Black Rabbit who delivers the final blow by pointing out that the White Blindness is transmitted by fleas that live in rabbit's ears, which El-ahrairah no longer has. El-ahrairah is finally defeated and knows it. The Black Rabbit acknowledges the courage of El-ahrairah, as well as the fact that he is a nuisance, and sends his terrible Owsla to frighten away the troops of King Darzin. We are told that the journey of El-ahrairah and Rabscuttle back to their own Warren takes three months, yet the Warren that El-ahrairah and Rabscuttle arrive back at is larger than they remember. All the rabbits who fought King Darzin's troops are old and the young rabbits of the Warren know little of the fighting that took place and care even less. In fact some of them view it with contempt. El-ahrairah is joined by Lord Frith himself.Frith gives El-ahrairah a new tail, whiskers and ears lit by a little starlight. Just as Frith is about to reward Rabscuttle as well, the story is interrupted by Pipkin, who has spotted a fox.

In this raw episode of Do Good to Lead Well, I welcome Tom Hardin, whose journey from Wall Street hedge fund analyst to one of the FBI's most prolific informants is a powerful examination of what drives good people to cross ethical lines. Despite the widespread belief that corruption comes from major events, Tom outlines the subtle drift and rationalizations that can turn ambition into poor decisions.Tom makes a compelling case that most people are far more vulnerable to contextual pressures than they would care to admit. In fact, he argues that the more confident we are in our belief that we are incorruptible, the more likely we are to make an ethical misstep. Through honest storytelling, the episode urges us to move beyond blaming or distancing ourselves, challenging us to ask better questions, reflect on our own values, and foster workplaces where psychological safety and true accountability can thrive. For anyone seeking a deeply personal and vulnerable understanding of ethics, culture, and resilience, this conversation delivers practical tools for self-reflection, leadership, and building lasting trust. These heartfelt lessons matter at every level of business and life. What You'll Learn- Why 80% of us are at risk of “moral drift” if we're not vigilant- The crucial difference between mistakes and choices- Culture is what gets rewarded- How leaders can spot and stop ethical slippage, starting with “the little things”- The power of asking better questions—not just of your team, but of yourself- Why honesty, humility, and self-forgiveness are the real superpowers in leadershipPodcast Timestamps(00:00) – The Decision to Share a Profound Story of Vulnerability(05:14) – Cheating is a Choice(09:19) – Ownership, Shame, and the Challenges of Self-Forgiveness(13:06) – Moral Drift and Rationalization(16:35) – How to Spot Warning Signs(24:05) – Culture, Values, and Leadership(40:01) – Resilience and Redemption(45:08) – Radical Listening(48:22) – A Story of Hope and Personal AgencyKEYWORDSPositive Leadership, Insider Trading, Behavioral Ethics, Organizational Culture, FBI Informant, Compliance, Self-Reflection, Vulnerability, Rationalization, Psychological Safety, Ethical Culture, Whistleblowing, Character Development, Integrity, Reputation vs. Character, The Peril of Incentive Structures, Ethical Decision-Making, Personal Values, Resilience, Redemption, Asking Clarifying Questions, Moral Drift, Organizational Justice, CEO Success

5.1: Housekeeping re. Blackberry and Dandelion and the first conversation: I didn't actually say it. Also must say "geek" less. First shout outs to Nati Plavin and Will Fuller. Thank you for your lovely comments. Also a comment, from Nathan Holec that the podcast is a bit quiet. I only record it on my smartphone, so I can believe that. Nightfall With a DogmanAfter fifteen years as a patrol officer and SWAT operator, a veteran responds to a frantic 911 call on a stormy October night: an elderly rancher reports a monstrous black creature—tall, fast, with eyes like fire—mauling his livestock. Arriving at the isolated property, the officer finds the chicken coop and lamb pen in savage ruin: birds shredded beyond recognition, six lambs mangled with impossible force, their bodies twisted and torn. Massive bipedal tracks, nearly seventeen inches long with clawed toes, confirm something unnatural walked upright through the mud. Drawn into the black pines by the old man's terrified warning that “it watches,” the officer confronts the entity: a hulking shadow with glowing red eyes seven feet high, radiating pure hate. A deep growl vibrates through his chest, followed by an inhuman shriek that silences the storm; the creature vanishes as quickly as it appeared. Backup searches yield nothing more, and the incident is logged as a routine “suspicious circumstance / possible livestock mauling.” The old man flees, abandoning the cursed ranch to rot. Hunters now avoid the woods, and the officer remains haunted, knowing those fiery eyes may still linger in the darkness, watching.Join my Supporters Club for $4.99 per month for exclusive stories:https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/what-if-it-s-true-podcast--5445587/support
Living in a physical, three‑dimensional world, most people don't grow up expecting to feel psychic impressions, receive messages, or sense anything beyond the veil. It hasn't been part of our cultural norm—at least not until now. But something is shifting. As the planet evolves and our collective consciousness rises, more of us are waking up to abilities that have always been there, just outside our awareness. People have been interacting with the spiritual realms for centuries, but what's happening today is different; humanity is waking up. This week's listener stories show just how uniquely these awakenings unfold. Each one reveals a moment when someone realizes, often unexpectedly, that their senses extend far beyond the physical world. Joining Nichole for this listener episode is healing practitioner Angie Castor. Angie was on A Psychic's Story Listener Story Episode 15: Healing with Breathwork, where she shared her personal story of her spiritual and healing journey. Together, Nichole and Angie share listener stories that reveal how psychic gifts emerge: When Debbie F had distinct claircognizance and clairalience gifts as a child, asked to see if she could regain these abilities as an adult. How Ella P's practice of meditation led her to connect with her spirit guide, who helped her exit a toxic relationship. When Lauren O's search led to a book, which led to a medium, and then to A Psychic's Story podcast, which led to a spiritual awakening. How Stephanie K grew up naturally knowing, seeing, and hearing things that could not be explained and only intensified to where she could not ignore them any longer. And finally, how a very intense event opened up Melanie N's psychic gifts. These stories show how psychic sensitivities can show up in our lives, being present early in life, introduced through our spiritual practices, or led to through books, mediums, or even podcasts! What story have you been telling yourself? This week on The Breakdown, Matthew Rhoads sat down with Pastor James to break down his message "Rewrite the Story." Looking at Deuteronomy 8:2–3, Romans 8:15–16, Exodus 16:3, Matthew 4:4, Romans 12:2, and 2 Corinthians 10:5, we talk about how pressure often exposes the lies we've accepted about God, ourselves, and our future. Together, we unpack how remembering God's faithfulness helps replace those lies with truth—and how God uses His Word to reshape the way we think and live. If you feel stuck in old patterns or thoughts that keep pulling you backward, this conversation will help you see how God begins to rewrite your story through truth. In this episode of The Leader's Notebook (Ep. 304), I walk through the extraordinary and complicated life of King David, beginning in Ruth 4 and 1 Samuel 16. David was not an ordinary man—shepherd, musician, warrior, king, poet, and prophet—yet Scripture still calls him a man after God's own heart. We explore his calling, his courage, his failures, and his fierce pursuit of God's purpose through every season of change. From the anointing at Bethlehem to the cave of Adullam, from kingship to repentance in Psalm 51, David teaches us how to keep our eyes on God's destiny even when we fall. His sin does not excuse us—but his repentance instructs us. His Psalms still speak, still heal, still point us to Christ. There is deep encouragement here for anyone who refuses to quit and keeps falling forward toward grace.– Dr. Mark Rutland Chapters (00:00:03) - The Leaders Notebook(00:00:31) - The extraordinary life of King David(00:09:23) - David the Book of Life(00:14:13) - David the King of Israel(00:20:56) - David the Conqueror(00:24:47) - The Story of David and the Capital(00:26:01) - The Story of David and Bathsheba(00:30:56) - David's Sin (Psalm 51)(00:33:10) - Why is David Called a Man After God's Own Heart?(00:34:40) - The Psalms

In this deeply honest conversation, Amanda sits connects with author and educator Colleen Clemens to talk about her powerful memoir, E=mc², an unflinching look at her long and emotionally complex journey through infertility and the road to motherhood.Colleen shares what it was like to live through a process that was physically demanding and emotionally raw, and why she chose to write about it with such candor. Rather than smoothing over the difficult moments, she invites readers and listeners into the full truth of the experience. But this conversation moves beyond fertility. Amanda and Colleen explore the deeper questions that arise when life doesn't unfold the way we expect:How do we show up when we're hurting? What does resilience actually look like in real life? How can we still choose joy and meaning, even during our hardest seasons? They also reflect on the pressures young people face today, the importance of honest storytelling, and how living authentically can help us navigate life's uncertainty. This episode is a reminder that even in life's most difficult chapters, there is power in telling the truth of our stories, and in choosing, day by day, how we want to live.Purchase the Book: E=mc2: A Story of Infertility, Miscarriage & Love - Kindle edition by Clemens, Colleen. What if the most important thing you teach your child has nothing to do with curriculum? In this episode of the Everyday Educator podcast, host Emma Bortins sits down with her mother-in-law and Classical Conversations founder Leigh Bortins to discuss the ideas behind her new book, The Habits: Practicing the Art of Grammar. Together they explore how naming, attending, memorizing, expressing, and storytelling build the foundational habits that help children — and homeschool families — truly flourish. If you're a homeschool mom looking for a classical Christian approach to raising lifelong learners, this conversation is for you. Leigh opens by sharing how it took her twelve years of homeschooling to truly understand what her husband had been telling her all along — that what children need most is consistency. It wasn't until she had a second set of young boys while her older sons were teenagers that the power of habits became undeniable. The routines she had built into Robert and John made it possible to keep the family functioning; without them, the whole thing would have fallen apart. From that personal foundation, the conversation moves into the heart of the book: a framework of five habits — naming, attending, memorizing, expressing, and storytelling — that Leigh calls the building blocks of a grammar education. These aren't abstract academic concepts. They're what every good mother already does instinctively: naming the dog, teaching a toddler not to touch the stove, helping a child memorize where mom will be in Walmart. The point is to recognize these habits, name them, and practice them with intention. The episode takes a fascinating turn when Emma asks about AI and technology. Leigh's position is clear: children under 12 don't need screens at all. Not because technology is inherently evil, but because children who never learn to entertain themselves, sit still, or be alone with their thoughts will struggle with self-control for the rest of their lives — with or without technology. The habits of self-governance have to come first. The episode closes with Leigh's single most important piece of advice for new homeschoolers: find a mentor. Not a curriculum. Not a method. A person who seems to be doing it well and is willing to let you watch. What You'll Learn - What the art of grammar actually means — and why it's about far more than memorization - The five core habits of the grammar stage: naming, attending, memorizing, expressing, and storytelling - Why Leigh says attending is the one habit she'd tell every family to start practicing today - How habits shape not just academic ability but character, self-control, and spiritual formation - Why parents need to self-assess their own habits before they can effectively pass them on - What Leigh thinks about AI and technology — and her recommendation for families with children under 12 - Why feeling inadequate to homeschool is universal — and why it's not actually the obstacle you think it is - How the habits formed in the grammar years show up years later in college anatomy and chemistry courses - Where to find Leigh online and which books to read alongside The Habits This episode of Everyday Educator is sponsored by: Summit Ministries Do you want your child to have conversations that challenge, encouragement that endure, and friends and faith for life? “Maybe what Jesus really wanted was to show us what we're all capable of—and that we've simply forgotten our own power.” — Kris Land In this mind‑expanding conversation, Mike sits down with author, spiritual thinker, and serial entrepreneur Kris Land to explore the provocative ideas behind his book The Infinity Within. Kris shares his extraordinary lifelong experiences—from childhood out‑of‑body moments to a near‑death incident that shattered his assumptions about reality. Along the way, he offers a bold framework for understanding the soul, reincarnation, emotion as the driver of existence, and life as a multidimensional game designed for growth. Whether you're spiritually curious or simply love a conversation that stretches the imagination, this one is a ride. Key Takeaways: A lifetime of unusual experiences shaped Kris's worldview—including early out‑of‑body events and a near‑death experience that provided “physical proof” something deeper was happening. Kris sees life as a game that souls choose to play—complete with rules, turns, and the challenge of experiencing emotion within time. Forgetfulness is part of the design: In Kris's model, souls agree to “forget” their abilities so they can meaningfully experience joy, loss, fear, and growth. Synchronicities aren't coincidences—he believes we orchestrate encounters for mutual learning, often without conscious awareness. Writing The Infinity Within shifted his entire understanding of spirituality, especially the possibility that Jesus acted more as teacher than pedestal. The book blends fiction and memoir through the character Gabe and mentor Elias, inviting readers to question their beliefs rather than adopt his. The audiobook narrator story is wild—a renowned voice actor paused all other projects to record Kris's book after reading just 15 minutes. In December 1992, a 16 year old girl from Moston, Manchester was falsely accused by a group she trusted and lured into a house where she was held captive for nearly a week. During that time, she was beaten, burned with cigarettes, injected with drugs, deprived of food, and subjected to sustained physical and psychological torture. As the days passed, the abuse only escalated, and it became clear she was not going to be allowed to leave. The group soon began to plan how it would end, but despite everything they had done to her, she would still do everything she could to make sure they were caught. Our other podcast: "FEARFUL" - https://open.spotify.com/show/56ajNkLiPoIat1V2KI9n5c?si=OyM38rdsSSyyzKAFUJpSywMERCH:https://www.redbubble.com/people/wickedandgrim/shop?asc=uPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/wickedandgrim?fan_landing=trueYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@wickedlifeFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/wickedandgrim/ Instagram:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wickedandgrim/?hl=enTwitter: https://twitter.com/wickedandgrimWebsite: https://www.wickedandgrim.com/
Regulation starts with you, not your child. In this conversation, I talk with Lisa Candera, single mom of a now-adult son with autism, profound OCD, and anxiety, about what it actually means to "regulate yourself first." Lisa shares how a long stretch of crisis during the pandemic pushed her to the edge and forced her to find ways to stay grounded in the middle of 911 calls, hospitalizations, and daily meltdowns. We unpack what regulation looks like in real life—pausing instead of rushing in, counting a three-out-of-ten success rate as a huge win, and getting honest about the stories that drive our reactions, especially the "I am failing my child" soundtrack. Lisa talks about turning her parked car into a "car office" for safety and space, setting clear boundaries around aggression, and shifting from lecturing in the moment to making a plan when everyone is calmer. We also talk about raising teens with big emotions and neurodivergent brains. Lisa names the pressure parents feel to foster independence, the fear of "enabling," and the reality that a fifteen-year-old with autism may not be developmentally fifteen. Together we explore scaffolding, praising effort and emerging skills, and holding a both-and: your child is struggling, and you deserve support and compassion too. Key Takeaways Regulation starts with you, not your child. Lisa describes regulation as moving from constantly losing your temper to feeling more grounded and able to respond. You don't have to be calm all the time—small shifts in your reactions can dramatically change the dynamic. A three-out-of-ten success rate is already a big deal. Instead of expecting yourself to get it right every time, Lisa suggests aiming for three regulated responses out of ten. Those moments might happen within minutes, and they still count. Pausing interrupts the automatic pattern. The urge to fix or lecture right away is strong. Even a brief pause can interrupt the usual pattern between you and your child and give you space to choose something different. Your triggers are about you, not just your child's behavior. Lisa discovered that many of her reactions were driven by fear and the belief that she was failing her son. Naming those stories helped her respond with more flexibility and compassion. You can change the dance by changing your part. Parents and kids often fall into predictable interaction patterns. When Lisa shifted how she responded—sometimes leaving the apartment instead of engaging—the pattern changed. Boundaries can include creative safety plans. During COVID, Lisa's plan sometimes involved leaving the apartment and sitting in her car when her son became aggressive. She reframed it as a temporary strategy rather than a failure. Thoughts like "this is an emergency" can escalate things. Parents' nervous systems often interpret big emotions as danger. Expanding your tolerance for discomfort can help you respond to what's actually happening. Scaffolding is not the same as enabling. Developmental level and anxiety matter. Sometimes making a task easier is what allows progress in other areas. Notice and name what your child does well. Highlighting everyday successes helps children internalize the belief that they can do hard things. You are not the baseline for how everyone else should be. Letting go of "I am the standard" creates more room for difference and helps you relate to your child as the person they are. What do the campfire, printing press, motion picture, and smartphone have in common? They're all storytelling technologies. Each one gave us a new medium through which to transmit tales, reshaping how we think, what we believe, and who holds power. And we may be on the brink of the most disruptive one yet. In his new book, The Story of Stories, Kevin Ashton traces the million-year arc from fireside gossip to the screen in your pocket. Now, with AI-generated imagery and displays approaching the resolution of the human eye, we're heading somewhere new: a world where we may not be able to tell the difference between a story and reality. Have you heard the phrase: "they fight like cats and dogs"? Well, this episode will show us exactly what that idiom means. It all started in the backyard with Melodybee and a very large harvest of loofah sponges. Our sweet Harold was just trying to be a helpful pup by answering the door with his special bionic thumbs, but—oh dear—a little accident turned into a big mystery in Mr. Honeybee's Garage! While Roger Robot works on a "durability upgrade," a mysterious new neighbor with sleek black fur and striking green eyes has snuck into the neighborhood. Is she the "wolf-bear" Melodybee is so excited to find? Or is she the reason Harold is suddenly acting so... incensed?Pack your curiosity and join us as we practice our mindful breathing and listen to our "quick thoughts" to solve this neighborhood puzzle. We'll follow the trail from the garden shed to the kitchen counters to see if a grumpy dog and a mischievous cat can ever truly find a way to share the Honeybee Neighborhood.
The Other Side of the Story with Tom Harris and Todd Royal – This structural dependence means that any disruption—whether from conflict, sabotage, or shipping hazards—would immediately constrain global supply, exactly as we have seen in the past two weeks. Natural gas flows reinforce this vulnerability. Qatar, one of the world's largest LNG exporters, ships nearly all of its liquefied natural gas...
