POPULARITY
In this episode, Tony talks with Recording Artist and Music Director at St. Francis of Assisi in NYC, Meredith Augustin.
Meredith Augustin shares her insight on multiculturalism in Catholic liturgy. As the Director of Music at the Church of St. Francis of Assisi in midtown Manhattan, Meredith reflects, “In the last 14 years, my job has allowed me to come face to face with so many beautiful people from so many beautiful cultures. It certainly has helped me evolve personally, as well as musically.”
Today's episode honors the many mothers that serve in the Church today. The women of this association lead in their churches, their communities, and their families, in whatever shape that takes. It is a true honor to take this week’s episode and celebrate the women of NPM, and the mothering role that so many of you take. Maybe you are a mother of your own children, or you offer a mothering role to those around you. Maybe you serve the church in religious life. Whatever it is, we so celebrate you today for Mother’s Day, and we thank you for the presence of Christ that you bring to all of us every day. Today on the podcast I speak with Meredith Augustin and Lorraine Hess. Meredith Augustin is the Director of Music at the Church of St. Francis of Assisi in midtown Manhattan. Meredith is also collaborated with musicians all over the world and has released four solo records, appealing to fans of all genres, particularly jazz, world, and Christian music, and most importantly, the mother of two. Lorraine Hess is a Catholic singer, songwriter, music minister, and recording artist born and raised in New Orleans. She currently directs music ministry at St. Catherine of Siena Parish in the Archdiocese of New Orleans, has released six solo albums of liturgical and sacred music, and the mother of four sons. Meredith Augustin and Lorraine Hess join us today and discuss the challenges of ministry and motherhood in the last year: from musically-restricted liturgies to children staying home for school, balancing ministry and motherhood held unique and beautiful challenges.
We are closing out Advent with our second annual “OYH Lessons & Carols.” You’ll hear a range of great music from a variety of composers. You’ll also hear non-scriptural readings woven throughout, read by friends of the podcast: Meredith Augustin, Rory Cooney, Bex Gaunt, David Haas, Carol Browning, Jaime Cortez, Kate Williams, and Audrey and Clare Reichert. Whether you listen while driving in the car, baking Christmas cookies, preparing for liturgy, or anyplace else, we hope that this celebration will serve as a moment of pause and reflection during this busy time of year. So, please open your hymnals!
It’s Monday of Holy Week, and we’ve got a long road ahead of us. We all need a little more time for preparation – if not a few minutes more to rehearse, set the environment, prepare worship aids or scripts, then to prepare ourselves for the holiest days of the year. So, for today, I’m sharing with you an episode of the Open Your Hymnal podcast. Open Your Hymnal is an independent podcast project hosted by Zack Stachowski and by me. This episode is a special celebration of Lenten music. You’ll hear a range of great seasonal music from a variety of composers arranged around the final three Gospel readings for Lent, the “Scrutiny Gospels.” These readings are shared with us by composers Meredith Augustin, Ian Callanan, and Luke Rosen. We hope that this presentation serves as both a companion and a source of nourishment.
