Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss John Barbour's epic poem The Brus, or Bruce, which he wrote c1375. The Brus is the earliest surviving poem in Older Scots and the only source of many of the stories of King Robert I of Scotland (1274-1329), popularly known as Robert the Bruce, and his victory over the English at Bannockburn in 1314. In almost 14,000 lines of rhyming couplets, Barbour distilled the aspects of the Bruce's history most relevant for his own time under Robert II (1316-1390), the Bruce's grandson and the first of the Stewart kings, when the mood was for a new war against England after decades of military disasters. Barbour's battle scenes are meant to stir in the name of freedom, and the effect of the whole is to assert Scotland as the rightful equal of any power in Europe.WithRhiannon Purdie Professor of English and Older Scots at the University of St AndrewsSteve Boardman Professor of Medieval Scottish History at the University of EdinburghAndMichael Brown Professor of Scottish History at the University of St AndrewsProducer: Simon TillotsonReading list:John Barbour (ed. The overall "vibe gut check" for the week was a 4/10, largely due to Grok 4's new features.Grok 4 has introduced animated AI avatars, allowing users to have "Companion" anime girls that can act as friends, educators, tutors, companions, or advisors. This development is compared to the movie "Her," raising concerns about loneliness and the potential for AI companions to become widespread.Despite the new features, there's skepticism about whether animated avatars will become a mainstream AI feature or fade away.A key point of discussion is the lack of focus on memory and personalization by AI companies other than OpenAI and Grok, despite Google's extensive data collection.Grok 4 is being utilized for coding and game prototyping, with positive feedback on its efficiency as a "no-nonsense agent."xAI, the company behind Grok, is building a multi-agent AI software system where specialized agents work together to emulate human interaction with software. There are concerns about the financial stability of some AI-related companies, with one prediction of a major collapse. The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) has awarded xAI and Grok a $200 million contract for "modernization," raising questions and concerns.Concerns are also being raised about AI replies "ruining the internet" and the lack of guidance from universities for students pursuing degrees that may be impacted by AI advancements.@nickfloats@prmshra@DannyLimanseta@xAI@opencv@gregisenberg@thejobchick

Today's episode is a special bonus episode, a companion to Jesse's discussion on episode 555 of ChooseFI! Jesse examines the risks of over-optimization in personal finance, concentrating on tax-loss harvesting, asset allocation, Roth conversions, and dividend investing. He explains how each strategy can offer value when used thoughtfully, but warns that many DIY investors misuse them—chasing tax savings or popular tactics without considering the bigger financial picture. Jesse explains why tax loss harvesting often yields minimal or neutral benefits, how asset allocation offers modest long-term gains but can introduce liquidity and planning issues, and why Roth conversions only make sense with clear tax arbitrage. He also debunks common myths around dividend investing, emphasizing that total return—not dividend yield—should guide investment decisions. Key Takeaways: • Tax loss harvesting can be useful, but often delivers neutral or negligible long-term benefits when misapplied. • Most DIY investors use tax loss harvesting simply to avoid taxes now, without true tax arbitrage benefit. • Doing Roth conversions just to “get more money into Roth” can actually increase overall taxes unnecessarily. • Dividend investing is not inherently superior and often relies on poor logic or misunderstood benefits. • Total return—including dividends and capital gains—should guide investment decisions, not just dividend yield. • Bonds are more tax-inefficient than stocks and are ideally held in tax-advantaged accounts. Episode Summary: In this deeply moving and honest episode, Amy Wheeler welcomes Lisa Becks—a yoga teacher, clinical social worker, and long-time practitioner—who shares her lifelong journey with yoga as a steady companion through grief, motherhood, cancer, and healing. Lisa recounts how she first encountered yoga in her early twenties while grieving the sudden loss of her mother, and how that one class at a Zen Buddhist center in Michigan led to decades of inner transformation. From the profound influence of her first teacher Barbara Linderman (a direct student of Śrī T. She has written numerous books including Colonial Narratives/Cultural Dialogues: “Discovery” of India in the Language of Colonialism (Routledge), and The Weyward Sisters: Shakespeare and Feminist Politics (Blackwell), which is co-authored with Dympna Callaghan and Lorraine Helms. She has also edited A Companion to the Global Renaissance: Literature and Culture in the Era of Expansion, 1500-1700 (Wiley-Blackwell), which has gone through two editions. She was among a handful of early scholars who illuminated Shakespeare's works within non-western, non-canonical contexts. One such example is her early essay about Shakespeare in India, “Different Shakespeares,” originally published in Theatre Journal in 1989, and then expanded on and reprinted in Colonial Narratives/Cultural Dialogues. Shakespeare and Postcolonial Theory (Bloomsbury, 2019) tells the story of the academic study of the cultural legacy of European colonialism, showing how the literature of former colonial powers represented and often distorted colonial history and how, in turn, colonized peoples articulated and reclaimed their identity and history by interrogating European culture and history. Singh's book shows how our reading of Shakespeare's plays such as ‘The Tempest,' ‘Hamlet,' and ‘Othello' has been forever changed by theater practitioners and scholars alike, while making a a persuasive case that postcoloniality continues to have a unique, still-unfolding relevance on how we read. In part, Singh's book also memorializes the struggle of scholars for legitimacy within a sometimes-hostile field. Author of the article on The Tempest mentioned at around 35:40 is as follows: Leininger, Lorie Jerrell. "The Miranda trap: Sexism and racism in Shakespeare's The Tempest." The Tempest. We talk about managing the deer herd, what to look for in a piece of ground, and why keeping your options open for new leases or access is more important than ever. As we transition from the off-season grind of habitat work to in-season strategy, access becomes the name of the game. We break down why getting in and out of a stand clean is often the difference between killing a mature buck or never seeing him again. The Anthem Companion to Karl Jaspers (Anthem Press, 2025) edited by Hans Joas and Matthias Bormuth is a collection of articles by an international group of leading experts has its special focus on the relevance of Karl Jaspers's philosophy for the social sciences. It also includes classical evaluations of Jaspers's thinking by renowned authors Talcott Parsons and Jürgen Habermas. Several chapters are devoted to the relationship between Jaspers and his teacher (Max Weber), his famous student (Hannah Arendt) and crucial figures in his intellectual world (Wilhelm Dilthey, Georg Simmel). Others deal with his relevance for disciplines from psychiatry to the study of religion and the historico-sociological research about the Axial Age, a term coined by Jaspers. In his introduction, editor Hans Joas tries to systematise Jaspers's relevance for the contemporary social sciences and to explain why Parsons had called him a ‘social scientist's philosopher'. The contributions to this volume deal, on one hand, with thematic areas for which Jaspers's work has been crucial: the Axial Age debate, a non-theological and non-reductive theory of religion; the understanding of psychoanalysis and psychiatry; and the possibilities of a diagnosis of one's own age. On the other hand, they put Jaspers in contrast with Max Weber, Wilhelm Dilthey, Georg Simmel and Hannah Arendt. The volume also contains important chapters by Talcott Parsons, who called Jaspers ‘a social scientist's philosopher', and by Jürgen Habermas, who contrasts his own views on the role of communicative ethics in an age of religious pluralism with those of Jaspers. The book promises to become an indispensable source in the re-evaluation of Jaspers's thinking in the years to come.Hans Joas is the Ernst Troeltsch Professor for the Sociology of Religion at the Humboldt University of Berlin. Matthias Bormuth is Professor for Comparative Intellectual History at the University of Oldenburg and is also the Director of the Karl Jaspers Haus.Stephen Satkiewicz is an independent scholar with research areas spanning Civilizational Sciences, Social Complexity, Big History, Historical Sociology, Military History, War Studies, International Relations, Geopolitics, and Russian and East European history. Gilbert House Fellowship #451: 1 Enoch 20–22

THE BOOK OF 1 ENOCH describes journeys by the patriarch to the places of punishment for fallen angels and sinful humans. The author of 1 Enoch described rebellious angels, called “stars of heaven,” as “great mountains… burning with fire.” This is consistent with other descriptions of angels in the ancient Near East as burning mountains (for example, the “stones of fire” in Ezekiel 28:14, 16).  Enoch also describes the “mountain of the dead,” a place with four chambers holding the spirits of the departed—one for the righteous, with a fountain of water, one for sinners, and one for the godless. One chamber is reserved for “them that make suit” (in other words, arguing their cases to Heaven). We also get the names of the seven archangels: Uriel (or Suru'el), who is in charge of the world and Tartarus; Raphael, who oversees the spirits of men; Reuel (or Raguel), who takes vengeance on “the world of the luminaries”; Michael, in charge of “the good ones of the people”; Sariel (or Saraqa'el), in charge of the spirits who sin against the spirit; Gabriel, who is in charge of paradise (Eden) and the serpents (probably the seraphim) and cherubim; and Remiel, who is in charge of “them that rise” (the resurrected?). Sharon's niece, Sarah Sachleben, was recently diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer, and the medical bills are piling up. If you are led to help, please go to GilbertHouse.org/hopeforsarah.
