It's almost Halloween! To celebrate, we've curated a compilation of the best moments from our interviews with the masters of horror. First, we have James DeMonaco, who shares with us the origin of THE PURGE, which was inspired by a real-life road rage incident. Then we have Drew Hancock talking about his film COMPANION, which he describes as “Barbie with bloodstains,” followed by Bruce Campbell, who details the dangerous stunts from his early work on THE EVIL DEAD. After that, we have Sam Lansky, who talks about his approach to writing an updated version of I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER for the current generation, and lastly, we have Philip Gelatt talking about one of his latest projects, FIRST WORD ON HORROR, a fifteen-part documentary series that profiles five of the finest horror writers working today. This episode is brought to you by AutoCrit—the all-in-one platform to plan, write, analyze, and edit your books. With comprehensive editing and analysis tools for fiction and nonfiction writers, and a vibrant community featuring courses like Nightmare Fuel starting October 6th and the Writing Iconic Killer Characters Workshop starting October 14th, AutoCrit gives you the tools and support serious writers need. THE TEMPLE in Jerusalem fell into disrepair within a century of the death of Solomon. The king who repaired it was a good man—sort of. Joash (or Jehoash), son of Ahaziah, reigned in Judah 835–796 BC. He was made king at age seven by the high priest Jehoiada and is credited with restoring the Temple—even pushing the priests, who seemed rather slow to make repairs even after they were ordered to do so. However, the account in 2 Chronicles 24 records that after the death of Jehoiada, Joash fell away and returned to the pagan gods of the Canaanites. Worse, he had the son of Jehoiada, Zechariah, murdered for calling him out! As a consequence, God allowed Judah to be defeated by a relatively small army from the neighboring Aramean kingdom of Damascus, and Joash was assassinated in his bed by two of his servants. We also discuss the death of Elisha in the northern kingdom of Israel, and why King Joash (same name, different king) failed to completely defeat the Arameans. Sharon's niece, Sarah Sachleben, was recently diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer, and the medical bills are piling up. If you are led to help, please go to GilbertHouse.org/hopeforsarah. Light as Companion, Not CureJournal prompt: “Today's flicker of hope was…”Witnessing light without forcing it to fix anything. Today we let light walk beside us and do only what light can do—show the next few feet.A Flicker (Hope) — Light you can actually hold Morning sun through a window. Moonlight on the driveway. A soft lamp instead of overhead glare. Not profound—present. Let one bit of light keep you company. To Rebuild (Healing) — One-minute light practice Step outside or to a window. Look at the light source (not directly at the sun). Inhale 4, hold 2, exhale 6—three times. Name one color you can see more clearly now. That's it.Take a Step (Becoming) — Schedule a light ritual Pick a daily 2–5 minute light moment (sun patch, lamp + tea, porch twilight). Put it on your calendar for the same time each day this week.Choose-your-energy menu: Hollow (low): Sit by a window for 60 seconds. Breathe out longer than you breathe in. Healing (medium): Take a 5-minute light walk (to mailbox, around the block). Becoming (higher): Set a recurring “light ritual” alarm for the week.Food for Thought: Light is a companion, not a cure. You don't have to wring meaning from it—notice and allow. When the day feels heavy, a single, honest moment of brightness can anchor you long enough to choose your next inch. Reaching for light isn't denying grief; it's giving your nervous system something steady to lean on while you carry it all.Exhale. Keep what serves you; leave the rest. I'll be here again tomorrow.

Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the anchoress and mystic who, in the late fourteenth century, wrote about her visions of Christ suffering, in a work since known as Revelations of Divine Love. She is probably the first named woman writer in English, even if questions about her name and life remain open. Her account is an exploration of the meaning of her visions and is vivid and bold, both in its imagery and theology. From her confined cell in a Norwich parish church, in a land beset with plague, she dealt with the nature of sin and with the feminine side of God, and shared the message she received that God is love and, famously, that all shall be well and all manner of things shall be well. In this episode of the Parent Companion for Play Therapy series, I answer one of the most common questions parents have: What does a child-centered play therapist actually do? From the outside, it might look like kids are just playing, but in reality, everything the therapist says and does is intentional, skill-based, and grounded in the child-centered psychological theory. I explain how therapists use reflective responses, offer choices, set limits when needed, and create a safe environment of trust, respect, and unconditional acceptance. I also share the deeper ways a child experiences the therapist's presence, engagement, and care. The playroom is not about random play — it's about creating the relationship and environment where your child can become the best version of themselves. Muscle Tension Intervals are those big gear, low cadence masher that are like lifting weights on the bike. You can do them in the CoachCat app → https://fascatcoaching.com/app where the first month is free. The problem? Not everyone has access to a steady 3–5% climb like we do here in Boulder.  That's where Zwift comes in. In this video, Coach Frank walks you through two ways to perform Muscle Tension Intervals on Zwift: 1️⃣ Exporting your workout into ERG mode and using the Incline setting in the Companion app. 2️⃣ Riding free-form in the Climb Portal and simulation riding uphill for work intervals, then turning around and coasting downhill for recovery. Additionally, you'll learn how torque (force on the pedals) connects to power, and why these intervals build the kind of strength that pays off when you combine it with higher cadence later in the season.

On 1 October 1526, Dorothy Stafford was born, a woman of Plantagenet blood who would spend forty years at the heart of Elizabeth I's privy chamber. In this episode, I trace Dorothy's remarkable path: Family webs: Stafford–Pole lineage (Buckingham & Clarence), and marriage to Sir William Stafford, Mary Boleyn's widower. Exile & faith: Under Mary I she fled to Geneva; in 1556 John Calvin stood godfather to her son (then they famously fell out, and she moved to Basel). Return & rise: With Elizabeth's accession (1559), Dorothy joined the privy chamber and became one of the queen's trusted sleeping companions. When she broke her leg in 1576, the court scrambled for a replacement so the queen could sleep peacefully. Storms weathered: Even the Stafford Plot involving her son didn't unseat her. Dorothy died in 1604, remembered at St Margaret's, Westminster, as a “continual remembrancer of the suits of the poor.” A royal confidante. Mediator. Quiet backbone of a court. THE FIRST SECTION of the Book of 1 Enoch concludes with Enoch's travels to the ends of the earth, including a visit to Eden.  We discuss the author's description of the portals through which the stars and winds pass, noting that evil winds came from the north, the direction from which bad things always came in Jewish thought (physical and supernatural). We also note Enoch's travels proceeded counterclockwise from east to north, west, south, and back to east, and compare that to other counterclockwise rituals from ancient times, on the summit of Mount Hermon, to the present day, at the Kaaba in Mecca.  When we return to 1 Enoch at the end of November, since we'll be in Israel next month at this time, we'll begin the Book of Parables, a prophetic section that influenced New Testament theology.  You can help Josh and Christina Peck with the medical and funeral expenses incurred for their 11-year-old son Nathan who went to be with the Lord on September 22, 2025:  • GiveSendGo: http://GiveSendGo.com/NathanTheBrave• PayPal: http://PayPal.me/JoshPeckDisclosure Or send your donation to: P.O. Last week Ceri shared something different in her episode - Grief, the Technicolour Rattlesnake - and many of her listeners wrote in to say that they recognised it instantly. That rattlesnake is still with many of us. So today, Ceri shares how you can keep making, and functioning creatively, whilst grief moves through you. Ceri provides an alternative to trying to outrun grief by overworking, deadlines and filling every waking hour so there's no space for feeling. Or swinging the other way by hiding from the world and becoming convinced you've lost it. If you're moving through grief right now, you might want to come back to this episode when you don't feel so raw. KEY TAKEAWAYS We mourn, not just for the loved one, but for the person we were, in relation to them and to ourselves. It can feel like the ground has fallen away completely. Grief rewires us. Grief is a non-linear process that involves oscillating between loss and restoration, and it's normal for emotions and productivity to fluctuate during this time. Creative expression during grief doesn't have to meet previous standards. Small, honest acts of making can be both healing and meaningful, even if they feel insignificant at first. Supporting yourself through grief includes caring for your body, mind, and creativity. Movement, mindful breathing, creating micro works and finding safe rituals can all help. BEST MOMENTS "Grief rewires us … it is labour. It's your brain, body and heart rewriting the world without your person in it.” "Exhaustion isn't weakness, it's biology, which is why beating yourself up for not being productive is the cruellest trick of all." "Find your own strange scaffolding, the thing that makes you feel safe or gives your brain a rest, and don't underestimate the power of ritual." In this episode of the Parent Companion for Play Therapy series, I explain how child-centered play therapy (CCPT) actually works — and why it's different from directive play therapy. Parents often assume all play therapy looks the same, but there are big differences. In directive approaches, the therapist sets the agenda and teaches lessons. In CCPT, the child leads the process, and the therapist follows with support, acceptance, and structure. This difference matters because when children own the process, they feel safe, confident, and invested. They work through struggles in their own way, at their own pace, which leads to lasting growth in self-esteem, regulation, problem-solving, and resilience. It may look simple from the outside, but CCPT creates deep, lifelong change because it gives children the freedom and safety to tell their own story. We wrestle with how forgiveness, stewardship, and sacrifice aren't side topics—they're Kingdom investments that echo into eternity. We also unpack the Kingdom Investment Calculator—a practical and theological lens for how we give our time, talent, and tithe, even when we don't see immediate return.

THE END of Ahab's line came within a span of seven years. Jehu, an Israelite military commander under Ahab's son, King Jehoram (or Joram), was anointed king over the northern kingdom at the direction of the prophet Elisha. Jehu moved quickly to eliminate Jehoram and the rest of the sons of Ahab. We explain why Ahab didn't literally have 70 sons (the number 70 in the ancient Near East was not a quantity; it was a symbol that represented “all of them”). Jehoram's nephew, King Ahaziah of Judah, was also killed by Jehu as he fled in his chariot, finally dying at the city of Megiddo. Then Jehu went to Jezreel and found Jezebel, the queen mother, whose last act in this world was probably screaming after she was tossed out of a tower window by her eunuchs. That left only Athaliah, mother of King Ahaziah. Athaliah was the daughter of Ahab and Jezebel, the sister of King Jehoram of Israel. When she heard that Ahaziah was dead, she tried to kill all of her grandsons. Why? She—and really, it was the Fallen realm motivating her—tried to eliminate the line of David (her husband, King Jehoram of Judah, son of Jehoshaphat, was a descendant of David) and replace it with the line of Ahab. Unfortunately for Athaliah, she missed one—an infant boy named Joash. Jehoiada the priest had secretly saved and raised Joash in the Temple. At the age of seven, Jehoiada brought him out, proclaimed him king, and, at his command, had Athaliah put to death, thus putting an end to the house of Ahab. Months ago, Tod saw, and recommended Companion (2025), the Jack Quaid, Sophie Thatcher dark comedy that Google lists as as a “Horror, Thriller, Science Fiction, Romance.” On Rotten Tomatoes it comes in at 93%. On IMDB. It's a 6.9. Recently, Dave stumbled upon it and suggested Barry watch as well. To say “opinions vary” on this one is kind of an understatement. Apparently a lot of it comes down to the expectations you go in with … like if you've never read the introductory blurb, or seen the trailer, you might be surprised by something other than what the studio intended. Maybe you should also just watch. There's also the usual round of Random Topics and the debut of a new segment called Back in Time. Thanks for listening!

In this episode of the Parent Companion for Play Therapy series, I talk about one of the biggest questions parents ask: Why does play therapy actually work? On the surface it looks like kids are just playing, but what's really happening is deep, hard emotional work. Play creates the safety and freedom children need to show their fears, frustrations, and struggles in ways they can't with words. I explain how child-centered play therapy provides the right conditions — a safe environment, a trusting relationship, and the freedom to be fully themselves — so children can process, heal, and grow. It might look simple, but it is profoundly effective, because it honors where kids are developmentally and allows them to do the emotional work they can't do anywhere else. A MIRACULOUS healing led to a Syrian warrior carrying mule loads of dirt from Israel back to Damascus. Why did Naaman the Syrian do that? In the ancient world, it was understood that every nation had a patron deity. For Syria, that was the storm-god Hadad, better known to us as Baal. For Israel, it was Yahweh—although Jezebel and her children tried hard to replace the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob with Baal, Astarte, and the rest of the Canaanite pantheon. When the prophet Elisha instructed Naaman to wash in the Jordan to be healed of his leprosy, Naaman was angry, expecting something more elaborate—a ritual of some kind. But after following the prophet's instructions and being restored to full health, Naaman realized the true God was Yahweh, not Baal, and Israel was His home. So, Naaman loaded two mules with dirt and carried it back to Syria—not because it held magical properties, but because it was a reminder of the one God with the power to heal. The concept of “holy ground” was established after the Tower of Babel, as described in Deuteronomy 32:  When the Most High gave to the nations their inheritance,        when he divided mankind, he fixed the borders of the peoples        according to the number of the sons of God.But the LORD's portion is his people,       Jacob his allotted heritage. (Deut. 32:8–9, ESV)  In other words, God allotted the people of Earth to angelic representatives who were tempted into receiving worship themselves, but He chose Israel as the conduit through which He would bring forth the Messiah to save the world from those fallen entities. We also discuss the way God delivered the northern kingdom of Israel from a prolonged siege of Samaria by the Syrians—despite the continued apostasy of Samaria. Sharon's niece, Sarah Sachleben, was recently diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer, and the medical bills are piling up. If you are led to help, please go to GilbertHouse.org/hopeforsarah.
