Learn how Wall Street has changed since the 2008 financial crisis in this Smart Money special presentation of Against the Rules: The Big Short Companion. Michael Lewis' best-selling book The Big Short is now 15 years old, and the Oscar-winning movie based on it was released a decade ago. To mark the occasion, Lewis has narrated a new audiobook of The Big Short, and on The Big Short Companion from Against the Rules, he and co-host Lidia Jean Kott look back on how the 2008 financial crisis still affects the world today. In this episode, Lewis calls Bloomberg's Matt Levine for help making sense of Wall Street's hangover from the crash described in The Big Short. They talk about Bitcoin, bank regulation, and new forms of risk-taking — all ways Wall Street has changed since the crisis. In this episode of the Parent Companion for Play Therapy series, I explain the concept of self-fulfilling prophecy and how it shapes a child's behavior, identity, and sense of self. Children often become what the people in their lives expect them to be — not because those expectations are spoken directly, but because they're communicated through tone, reactions, labels, and assumptions. I talk about how easily children become branded as "the bad kid," "the quiet kid," or "the problem kid," and how those expectations quietly limit who they believe they can become. I also explain why child-centered play therapy works so differently. In the playroom, children are not defined by past behavior or labels. They are seen as capable, growing, and becoming. When a child experiences unconditional acceptance paired with belief in their capacity to change, that message becomes powerful. This episode helps parents understand how expectations influence behavior — and how shifting those expectations can change the entire trajectory of a child's growth. AMDG. Theologian, podcaster, and author Dr. Brett Salkeld wants to make every class Catholic. Brett contends that faith and science are complementary. Though the two fields answer two fundamentally different questions, their conclusions are inseparably intertwined. Hello, to you listening in Neenah, Wisconsin!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Wednesdays on Whidbey and your host, Diane Wyzga.A few years ago I had to make the decision to send my kitty over the Rainbow Bridge. He had been living pretty well with kidney disease but I noticed changes. What to do? Is it time? We're coming into the holidays. Will the home visit vet be available? The day before they were to leave for a week with their son and daughter-in-law my sister and her husband were faced with the Rainbow Bridge decision for their good and faithful dog who had been ailing with cancer and old age. What to do? Cancel the trip? Find a dog sitter?Recently, my friend was placed in a position of having to leave a relationship because it had become very difficult and dangerous. What to do? How to do it? When to do it?Maybe you see yourself in these situations. I have a solution. The choice we're called on to make isn't between what is right and what is wrong. The decision is between what is right and what is best.My sister and I knew we had done right by our animal companions over the many years of time together and care. Now it was time to do what was best for them. Likewise, my friend knew that she had done what was right for the relationship; now it was time to do what was best for herself. Practical Tip: When faced with a situation that places you at a crossroads of what to do and how to do it, consider asking yourself: How might I choose between what is right and what is best? I just know you will come to the right answer. Thank you for listening. You're always welcome: "Come for the stories - Stay for the magic!" ISAIAH WAS a wordsmith. And the Hebrew word he used translated “idols,” ʾĕlîlim, identifies the spiritual nature and origin of the idols he condemned. Dr. Christopher B. Hays, citing work of A. T. Clay published in 1907, identified the origin of ʾĕlîlim as the name of the Mesopotamian deity Ellil, which was the Akkadian form of the Babylonian/Sumerian god Enlil. As Derek documented in The Second Coming of Saturn, Ellil/Enlil was the equivalent of the Canaanite father-god El, and thus “the abomination of the Ammonites,” Milcom (i.e., Molech). He was also known as Assur, chief god of the Assyrians, Dagon of the Philistines, Kronos of the Greeks, Saturn of the Romans, and probably Osiris of the Egyptians, among others. We believe this entity is also Shemihazah, leader of the sons of God in Genesis 6, whose rebellion created the monstrous Nephilim, the spirits of which became demons upon their deaths in the Flood of Noah. Isaiah, then, was condemning not carved blocks of wood or stone, but the demonic spirits they represented—the “gods” of the pagans whom the kingdoms of Israel and Judah continued to worship. We'll see as we get deeper into the Book of Isaiah that the prophet understood the nature of the entities the Israelites were interacting with. The cult of the dead was alive and well in the time of Isaiah. Sharon's niece, Sarah Sachleben, has been diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer, and the medical bills are piling up. In this episode of the Parent Companion for Play Therapy series, I talk about nature versus nurture and how both play a meaningful role in the behaviors parents often seek therapy for. I explain the difference between a child's inborn personality traits (nature) and the experiences that shape them over time (nurture), and why many struggles — anxiety, control, sensory sensitivities, aggression, timidity — usually reflect both at work. I walk through how child-centered play therapy honors who a child naturally is while helping them regain regulation when life experiences have pushed their tendencies beyond what they can manage on their own. The goal of CCPT is never to change a child's personality; it's to help them function well, stay regulated, and prevent natural traits from becoming overwhelming. This episode helps parents understand why their child may be struggling, why it's not their fault, and how therapy supports a healthy return to balance. This week on the Companion Podcast, we're unwrapping one of the most needed gifts of Christmas — peace. Not the kind you get from a quiet moment, a Hallmark movie, or a candle that smells like pine needles, but the kind Jesus offered His disciples in the middle of a storm. Evan, Pastor Jon, and David talk about real peace: the kind that anchors you when your fears are justified, when the boat is actually filling with water, and when life feels more chaotic than Christmas should allow. They explore how the Holy Spirit forms peace in us, why temporary fixes fall short, how pride keeps us holding the string of our anxieties, and how humility opens us to the peace Jesus gives. If your life feels more like a storm than a snow globe, this episode is for you.
THE PRIDE of a king who elevated himself above what God ordained left King Uzziah with a debilitating disease. Uzziah, also called Azariah, ruled the kingdom of Judah 792–742 BC. He was a good king for most of his reign until pride got the better of him. He dared to offer incense in the Temple, a function reserved for the priests. As a result, he was afflicted with leprosy the rest of his life. This week's question: What's the context of Joel 2:25:I will restore to you the yearsthat the swarming locust has eaten, the hopper, the destroyer, and the cutter,my great army, which I sent among you. This week we start a new study where we will be considering the Angle's declaration in Luke 2:10 that Jesus' birth was "good news of great joy for all the people" and ask why? Why IS this birth some 2,000 years ago good news of great joy to us now? Each week we will find new answers in scripture to this question for Jesus' birth is "good news of great joy" for many reasons. This week we will find our answer in Matthew 1:23 - read the verse and consider the question. Also consider John 1:14, Philippians 2:6-8, and Luke 2:7 - what do these all have in common? What do they tell you about Jesus and why He is a blessing to your life?

In this episode of the Parent Companion for Play Therapy series, I explain the idea of snowball momentum — how one area of growth in child-centered play therapy naturally leads to progress in other areas. Children rarely work on just one issue in isolation. As they begin addressing themes like power and control, self-esteem, anxiety, or aggression, progress in one area creates movement in the others. That momentum grows session by session, especially during the work phase of therapy, and becomes the driving force behind lasting change. I walk through how these therapeutic themes feed into each other, why consistent sessions matter for maintaining this momentum, and how this same principle applies not only in therapy but in life. Small change creates more change — and once the snowball starts rolling, growth accelerates. This episode helps parents understand why CCPT is so effective over time and why each session builds on the last. In this week's Companion Podcast, Evan, Jon, and David unpack the opening message of our Christmas series, where Galen introduced the idea of “monster gratitude.” From childhood memories of vibrating football games and monster cookies to the spiritual discipline of praise, the team dives into why we open complaints more easily than we open gratitude — and why Scripture treats grumbling far more seriously than we often realize. They explore Galen's “gratitude recipe” and the ingredients that transform our inner life: appreciation, praise, thankfulness, contentment, and worship. Along the way, they discuss why praise disrupts negative spirals, why grumbling reveals our heart posture, and how gratitude helps us see the world the way God intends.Whether you're heading into a busy, noisy Christmas season or just need a reset for your soul, this conversation invites you to unwrap a childlike wonder and discover a life shaped by monster gratitude.
In Barovia, exhaustion isn't just a condition. It's a worldview. And when Session Twenty-Three began, that's exactly where we were—drained, bruised, and barely held together after ghosts, scarecrows, giant spiders, and one very opinionated abandoned manor. We left Argynvostholt like survivors crawling out of a collapsed mine, heading toward the only place in Barovia that still feels remotely like home: the Wizards of Wine Winery. A place with warmth, family, and maybe even joy, if the mist isn't listening too closely. But Barovia never lets you walk in peace. At dawn, we spotted the glow of a bonfire hidden in the trees. Urihorn scouted ahead and found—of course—a ritual sacrifice in progress. A druid and a pack of wild men preparing to carve open a bound stranger smeared with wolfsbane and nightshade. Classic Barovian hospitality. That stranger was Riven Thal. And he joined our party in the most Barovia way possible: crawling through the dirt, blasting his captors with Moonbeam from the top of a pine tree, and then refusing to come down because he did not trust us at all. Fair.Riven's introduction said everything we needed to know:this man survives. And he survives suspicious. After a tense standoff, he agreed to travel with us, keeping one eye on the road and one eye on us.But the day had other plans.Further along the Svalich Road, we found a small camp where Izek Strazni—the executioner who beheaded our former companion—was quietly chopping wood. Traxidor saw him and immediately tried to smite him out of existence. And that's when the forest exploded in fire.A teenage wizard came screaming out of the trees—Victor Vallakovich, the old Burgomaster's son—and launched a Fireball straight into our group. Urihorn's panther died instantly. The rest of us barely stayed standing. Traxidor tried to heal himself, but Victor Counterspelled him like he was swatting a fly. Daermon charmed the boy before he could kill us all.And then came the twist.Izek, freed from the Hold Person spell, didn't attack. He explained. Calmly. Honestly. Maybe even painfully. Our friend Valen'eir—the wizard Izek executed—had murdered a young gravedigger, confessed to serving Strahd, and threatened Vallaki. Izek claimed he was carrying out justice, not vengeance. The explanation didn't fix anything, but it changed everything.Suddenly the question wasn't “Is Izek evil?”It was “What do we not know about each other?”Riven watched this unfold like someone judging a very poorly run cult. Urihorn remembered that Van Richten once warned him Radley and Daermon might secretly serve Strahd. And at that moment, it didn't feel crazy. Both sides stepped back. A truce. A temporary ceasefire.Izek dragged the charmed Victor away. Ravens descended to pick at the scorched remains of Urihorn's panther. When we finally reached the Wizards of Wine, the Martikovs welcomed us like family returning from war. Dinner was warm, loud, and painfully normal—until Danika reminded us of a truth Barovia never lets you forget:“Barovia has only one ruler.”The table fell silent. And in that silence, someone noticed something impossible.Urihorn—our halfling ranger, our loyal friend—did not cast a shadow. In a land ruled by a vampire, a missing shadow isn't a quirk. It's a warning. And that's where Session Twenty-Three ends—not with a battle, but with a question. If Barovia takes pieces of you one at a time…who will you be when it's done?

THE SECOND SECTION of the Book of 1 Enoch isn't as well known as the part that deals with the fallen Watchers, but it's important for New Testament theology. The Book of Parables, chapters 37–71 of 1 Enoch, deals specifically with how the world will be purified from the sin introduced by the rebellious Watchers. To the author(s) of this section of 1 Enoch, which was probably written by Essenes in the Galilee between 25 BC and the end of the first century BC (in other words, just before the birth of Jesus), the world had been so corrupted by the fallen angels that only God's direct intervention could put things right. This week, we share the historic backdrop of the Book of Parables: The return of Jews from Babylon who found a priesthood in Jerusalem that believed the age of prophecy was over, repeated invasions by Greeks, Armenians (yes, really), Parthians, and Romans, and civil war, which only intensified a belief among the group that came to be known as Essenes that the arrival of a Savior was imminent. When he didn't come on schedule (sometime between 90 and 80 BC), the Essenes revised their timeline. After a period of civil war, followed by a Parthian invasion around 40 BC, Herod the Great, governor of Galilee, returned from Rome with the backing of the army of Mark Antony (yes, that one). When Herod drove the Parthians from Judea in 37 BC after a three-year war, many Essenes apparently thought Herod was the Anointed One—the Messiah! It didn't take long for Herod to disabuse everyone of that notion. That's the back story of the Book of Parables. It was written at a time when many Jews believed Messiah's arrival was imminent. The Book of Parables was a reminder that God's promises would be fulfilled, and the agent of God's imminent judgment was a figure called the Anointed One, the Chosen One, and, most frequently, the Son of Man. This would all be nothing more than historical interest except for an important fact: Jesus applied the title “the Son of Man” to himself 78 times in the New Testament, and that title doesn't appear in any Jewish writing prior to the Book of Parables. This week's question: Are there ranks of demons, some of which are more difficult than others to exorcise? We referenced the work of Restoration in Christ Ministries (rcm-usa.org).
