** Why would I have an excommunicated gay former Mormon on the podcast? Well, I've learned that my excommunicated friends are usually good people—often doing the best they can with complex circumstances—children of the same Heavenly Parents and my spirit brother/sister. I learned a lot from Steven. Steven is not in the space “of burn it all down” and “everyone should leave the church”. He gives grace to me for being in the Church and I'm returning that grace. His story is powerful and helps me consider what I can do to better love and support my LGBTQ friends. When we know better, we do better. ** My friend Steven Mark Trier (age 58, adopted, excommunicated in 1992) joins us to share his story. Steven (a talented pianist, composer, and producer), takes us back to a time when there were few resources and limited understanding for gay Latter-day Saints. Steven talks about being gay and doing all he could to not be gay including service a mission “to be straight” and considering castration. Steven talks about accepting himself as God made me. Steven talks about how hard it was to leave the Mormon church—all the community that he enjoyed—and the chance to share his musical talents. Steven talks about how that was all necessary as he felt he needed to be “in-charge of his own destiny” and be authentic. Steven talks about “why would a God who made me as I am send me to hell for being me” Steven talks about navigating his relationship with a narcissist father and a supportive mother and eventually reuniting with his biological mother. Steven talks about complex mental health challenges and how he now has found stability, peace, and love in his life (including being with his parter for the last 8 years). Thank you Steven for being on the podcast. You are a survivor and a remarkable man. I wish we could have better loved and supported you as a young gay Mormon. I'm sorry for all the needless pain. You are a good man. You story give other hope. Links: Steven's book: https://aureusmediadesign.com/excommunication/

What would a generative day—one that might throw off energy into the rest of your life—look like? In Episode 266, Susan and Cynthia take on the concept of Sabbath. It's a conversation about abundance, rhythm, letting go, and what it means to rest. Also about not needing to earn or prove anything, liberation, eradicating oppression, and some of the ways Latter-day Saints may think too narrowly when approaching this expansive idea.
Millions of individuals visit Temple Square in Salt Lake City each year. Many are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Many others come from around the world to see the 10-acre site of the Salt Lake Temple and other parts of the site that is headquarters to the global Church. The Salt Lake Temple has been undergoing significant renovations since 2019 and is scheduled to host an open house and dedication in 2027. As the grounds around the temple have been refreshed, new sculptures that represent aspects of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the life of Jesus Christ and the Restoration of Jesus Christ’s Church have been placed around the grounds. Two of those sculptures came from the dedicated work of sculptor Michael Hall. “It’s humbling,” Hall said. “How do you depict God? How do you depict God in a way that will help people to feel the Spirit?” Hall joins Church News editor Jon Ryan Jensen to discuss the testimony-refining process of creating sculptures of the Savior’s mortal life and of Joseph Smith’s First Vision.

Adam's youngest son, John, locked himself in the bathroom. No big deal — kid's fine, sang songs in there for forty-five minutes like a champ. The problem was the doorknob. Broken cam, broken spring, faceplate screws on the wrong side, and no way in. So Adam did what any father of six at the end of a long day does: he took an angle grinder to the thing and ground the entire doorknob into a pile of metal shards on the floor. Dave's suggestion — order the door open under holy obedience — came in a little too late. Then Dave told on himself. Reseating a toilet, scraping the wax ring, already in a state of borderline rage. He bumped the tank against the tile and cracked it. In a fit of Herculean fury he hoisted the seat over his head, ready to Hulk-smash it into a million pieces — and heard, somewhere, his guardian angel. Jesus doesn't want you to do this. He set it down. Didn't destroy it. And got rewarded for it: American Standard honored a lifetime warranty he didn't know he had and shipped him a $1,600 toilet, free, to replace the $200 one he broke. Resisting the rage paid out at eight to one. Then a quieter note. Baby Mary is still in the NICU. They got her off the breathing tube — she lasted about 24 hours before she had to be re-intubated. Good progress, long road still ahead. Oklahoma City's two hours off, the kids are out of school, and the Minihans are looking at hiring a nanny. But Adam wanted to brag on Lady Haylee. A stranger at the NICU left her a handwritten note and a crochet sweater with Mary's name on it — telling Haylee her faith had been an encouragement, that God is using her right there in that place. Haylee wasn't trying to be a witness. She was just being a mother in a hard place. That's exactly why it landed. Keep praying for Mary. This week's pour: Smoke Wagon Uncut Unfiltered Straight Bourbon from Nevada H&C Distilling out of Las Vegas. 59.29% ABV — hand-written on the bottle, so every batch runs a little different. Hot, full-flavored, plenty of grit. Jim's yummy scale gave it a 6.0, which broke the scale, because the scale apparently only went to four until tonight. Then the real work. The spiritual significance of manual labor. Summer's coming — the season of labor — and the guys make the case that work isn't a curse of the fall. Adam was tending the garden before sin entered the world. His very name comes from the dirt — adamah — made from it, named for it, made to work it. St. Augustine: what's more wonderful than to watch God's creation respond to human hands? Aquinas gives his four reasons for manual labor — obtain your livelihood, remove idleness, curb concupiscence ("I'm almost too tired to sin"), and give alms from the surplus. And the deeper distinction: servile work, done out of necessity, and liberal work, done for the sake of rest. We don't work to work. We work so we can look at what we've made, see that it is good, and rest. Same thing a man does in the soil, he does for his wife — order the environment so the thing entrusted to him can thrive. Protect, provide, establish. It's hard. It's supposed to be. What did you think hard was going to be? The man who can fix things is a threat to the throwaway culture — and the same will that fixes a thing is the will that prays the rosary on the morning you'd rather not. Raise your glass.TOPICS COVEREDAdam grinding his kid's bathroom doorknob into shards with an angle grinder after his son John got locked inDave nearly Hulk-smashing a toilet seat in a fit of rage — and the guardian angel that stopped himHow resisting the rage earned Dave a free $1,600 American Standard toilet under a lifetime warrantyBaby Mary update — off the breathing tube for 24 hours, re-intubated, long road still aheadThe Minihans looking at hiring a full-time nanny with the kids out of schoolThe handwritten note and crochet sweater a stranger left Lady Haylee at the NICUHow you carry suffering as a Christian can be a witness even when you're not trying to be oneBourbon of the week: Smoke Wagon Uncut Unfiltered Straight Bourbon, Nevada H&C Distilling, 59.29% ABVJim's yummy scale hitting 6.0 and breaking its own four-point ceilingWhy we even have to talk about manual labor when it used to be everybody's daily lifeAttention as agency — guarding what you direct your mind toward in a world built to fracture itAcedia, apathy, and becoming a cog flung to and fro like Francesca in Dante's ninth circle"The world fears the man who can fix things" — Fr. Friends of the Rosary,At that time, as we read today (Mark 12-13-17), some Pharisees and Herodians tested Jesus by asking whether it was lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar. He amazed them:“Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesarand to God what belongs to God.”Jesus went deep by putting every loyalty in its proper order: the coin bears Caesar's image, so it may be returned to Caesar; the human person bears God's image, so the whole person belongs to God.Mind you, God's image is stamped upon ourselves. The human soul bears God's image. The self belongs wholly to God.The main theological lesson: Civil duties have their place, but conscience, worship, truth, and the soul belong to God.In this Gospel, Jesus does not merely escape a political ambush; he teaches that worldly power is limited. Caesar may receive the coin, but he cannot claim the heart, said St. John ChrysostomSt. Augustine said, To render to God what is God's” means to return ourselves to him: our memory, intellect, will, body, conscience, and love. The coin goes back to Caesar; the soul must go back to God.Today is the Optional Memorial of Saints and Roman martyrs Marcellinus and Peter (d. 304), who were an exorcist and a priest.Ave Maria!Come, Holy Spirit, come!To Jesus through Mary! Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will. Please give us the grace to respond with joy!+ Mikel Amigot w/ María Blanca | RosaryNetwork.com, New YorkEnhance your faith with the new Holy Rosary University app:Apple iOS | New! This week on Mormon Stories News, John Dehlin and Meggan Hayes break down some of the biggest stories making headlines in Mormonism. We begin with the growing scandal surrounding former Pinal County Sheriff and congressional candidate Mark Lamb. Recent reporting from The Arizona Republic details allegations involving explicit messages, secret relationships, and accusations that raise serious questions about image management, accountability, and whether Mormon leaders around Lamb have helped to protect him from consequences. We also examine the case of former LDS stake president Patrick Bucknum, who has been accused by federal authorities of orchestrating a years-long fraud scheme involving millions of dollars. We take a look at the newest reports from Ensign Peak Advisors, the investment arm of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. With the church's investment portfolio recently losing billions, we discuss what the latest filings reveal, where the money is being invested, and why church finances remain one of the most debated topics among members and former members alike. We also cover the arrest of William Scott Messer at BYU-Idaho. The case has generated significant attention in the Rexburg community and raises questions about discernment and how William obtained an ecclesiastical endorsement.Next, we discuss Auckland YSA and visiting General Authority Peter Meurs and his challenge encouraging young single adults to go on 26 dates in 2026. While some see the initiative as a fun way to encourage social interaction, others view it as another example of the intense cultural pressure many Latter-day Saints experience surrounding dating, marriage, and family formation. Finally, we break down the latest reporting from The Salt Lake Tribune regarding church annotations. The article shines a light on a little-understood system used by church leaders to place confidential notes on member records. The story has sparked fresh concerns about how abuse is handled in the church and the lack of training given to the leaders who are tasked with making and keeping annotations. From leadership scandals and financial disclosures to dating culture, criminal investigations, and church transparency, this week's Mormon Stories News covers the stories shaping conversations throughout the Mormon world.Show notes can be found on the Mormon Stories blog here.___________________YouTubeAt Mormon Stories we explore, celebrate, and challenge Mormon culture through in-depth stories told by members and former members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as well as scholars, authors, LDS apologists, and other professionals. We have a very special guest on Mormon Stories today, who some of our live audience may know as "TrevAnon" on YouTube. He has helped out for many years as a moderator for Mormon Stories livestreams, and he is here today to tell us why a Never-Mormon from the Netherlands would find interest in Mormonism. This episode will begin with Trev's story, and how he developed his interest in cults and other high-demand religions--especially Scientology. Additionally, he has prepared a presentation that will compare and contrast Scientology to Mormonism. Join along as we hash out all the similarities and differences point by point. We are grateful to TrevAnon (Corry) for sharing his story and expertise with our audience, and hope you find it as interesting as we did. ___________________YouTubeAt Mormon Stories we explore, celebrate, and challenge Mormon culture through in-depth stories told by members and former members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as well as scholars, authors, LDS apologists, and other professionals. Ian Wilks was a high-ranking leader of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He is a former bishop, a former branch president, and a member of the stake presidency in British Columbia, with responsibility for shepherding twelve congregations and thousands of members. Then-apostle Dallin H. Oaks, now the 18th president and living prophet of the LDS Church, personally recruited him, interviewed him, called him, set him apart, and trained him into that role.¹ For 37 years, Ian devoted his entire life to his church. He paid tithing on his gross income. He sealed his marriage in the London Temple. He conducted hundreds of worthiness interviews. He trained bishops. He stood at pulpits and at altars. He made sacred covenants in the temple to give all he had, including his own life if required, for the building up of the kingdom on earth. In a snowstorm, the cost of those 37 years lands all at once. The thing he wanted most to be true, he learned was untrue. I spoke with Ian on my podcast Cults, Culture & Coercion and in a recent livestream. He is the co-host of the Inside Out podcast with Jim Bennett, son of the late US Senator Bob Bennett. What he told me confirms what former members of the LDS Church have been describing to me since my first book was published in 1988. The Mormon Church meets every criterion of an authoritarian cult under my BITE Model of Authoritarian Control™ and sits on the destructive end of my Influence Continuum©. Ian himself took the BITE Model self-test based on his decades of experience and scored the church at roughly 85 to 90 percent across the four dimensions of behavior, information, thought, and emotion. This group is one of the wealthiest, most influential groups in politics and its believers are over represented (compared to all other faith groups) in our FBI, CIA, Homeland security and faithful people will follow the direction of the Prophet over the Constitution (even though they swear an oath to uphold the Constitution) which should make all Americans worry. Send us a text message if you have a question you want answered on the podcast. As an LDS therapist, one of the most common things I hear from women is, "I feel torn inside." There' is a part of you that wants to be calm and faithful, and another part that's anxious, or exhausted, or just done. Both can be true on the same day. That's not hypocrisy. That's being human. In this episode, I sit down with JoAnna Bethea, an Associate Clinical Mental Health Counselor and the very first therapist to join me at Aligned Counseling. JoAnna walks us through Internal Family Systems, the modality she uses with her clients, and shows how it weaves beautifully with the gospel and with the Mind Body Bridging work I already teach. She shares her own story of a four day anxiety attack the week her youngest son finished his last high school sport, and how that hard season led her into the most freeing work she's ever done.If you've ever felt torn in two, this one is for you._______________________________Get to know our guest:JoAnna Bethea is an Associate Clinical Mental Health Counselor at Aligned Counseling Utah. She specializes in Internal Family Systems (IFS) and weaves it together with Mind Body Bridging and the gospel of Jesus Christ to help LDS women heal from anxiety, perfectionism, people pleasing, and the quiet identity loss that often shows up in motherhood and empty nesting. She is also the heart behind a brand new Instagram account, Teaching Them To Fly, for moms walking their kids (and themselves) into the next chapter. If you're in Utah and what JoAnna shared today felt like a light bulb moment for you, she's currently taking new clients at Aligned Counseling Utah. Doctrine and Covenants section 9, verse 8 are supposedly the words of the Lord, given through Joseph Smith to Oliver Cowdery in 1829. "But, behold, I say unto you, that you must study it out in your mind; then you must ask me if it be right, and if it is right I will cause that your bosom shall burn within you; therefore, you shall feel that it is right." This week and next on the Profile we'll be taking a biblical look the burning in the bosom and how Latter-day Saints testify that they believe the Book of Mormon is true with president of the Institute for Religious Research Dr. Robert M. Why does Brigham Young's complicated legacy—full of both remarkable achievements and difficult decisions—still inspire deep reflection and admiration 225 years later? In this special birthday episode of the documentary series, hosts Camrey Fox, John Wilson, and Professor Daniel Peterson gather at Brigham Young's winter home in St. George, Utah, to celebrate his 225th birthday. The hosts highlight his profound devotion to building of the Kingdom of God, particularly through temple construction. They share stories that show the human Brigham: his temper and self-control as a father, his hands-on leadership style, his care for individual Saints, and his unexpected support for the arts and theater. This episode paints a nuanced portrait of Brigham Young—not as an infallible icon or harsh autocrat, but as a dedicated, practical, and very human figure whose legacy continues to shape the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints 225 years after his birth. The post Becoming Brigham Episode 19: Another Birthday! Celebrating a 225 Year Legacy first appeared on The Interpreter Foundation.
In this episode, I share our nine‑day trip that became far more than a vacation—it became a reset button for our marriage and a living lesson in what firm commitment really looks like. The journey begins in Maryland, serving alongside our sons and a group of young adults in a community project called “Shop the Block.” , “There's a different kind of closeness that comes from serving together,” a line that captures the spirit of the trip's beginning. From there, we wander through Amish country, where the simplicity and intentionality of the Amish way of life sparks reflection on how easily modern life pulls us away from what matters most. Their route continues through early church history sites in Palmyra and Kirtland, where the sacrifices and steadfastness of early Saints deepen our appreciation for conviction and devotion. The trip also brings moments of awe—like braving the icy winds on the Maid of the Mist at Niagara Falls—and moments of tenderness, like watching Dave stand proudly in front of the Progressive Insurance headquarters where he spent 37 years building a career and supporting their family. “He was committed. Deeply. Quietly. Consistently.”These experiences lead me into a heartfelt exploration of the difference between being committed and being firmly committed—especially in marriage. I reflect on the cultural shift toward self‑focused relationships, the challenges we have faced (including the grief of losing Jessica), and the daily choice to turn toward each other rather than away.I also share insights gathered from couples we've worked with:Holding an eternal, long‑term perspectiveLetting nothing stand in the way of prioritizing the marriageOffering grace through life's phasesKeeping excitement alive through intentional datingDedicatedBeing “all in”Communicating honestly, even when it's uncomfortableUltimately, firm commitment isn't flashy—it's steady, daily, and sacred. It anchors us. It shapes how we love. And it carries us through.I invite you, my listeners, to reflect on their own lives:Where are you firmly committed—and how does that commitment shape who you are becoming? In this episode of That Would Be Rad, we dive headfirst into one of the strangest intersections of religion, history, folklore, and the modern UFO phenomenon. For decades, reports of mysterious craft and non-human intelligences have captured the imagination of millions. Governments investigate them. Fighter pilots report them. Entire belief systems have formed around them. But long before congressional hearings, Pentagon footage, and discussions about "non-human intelligence," a group of Orthodox Christian mystics and saints were issuing a very different warning. What if the phenomenon is real... but not extraterrestrial?Join Woody and Tyler as they explore the ancient world of Orthodox Christianity, the Desert Fathers, aerial spirits, Ezekiel's famous "wheel within a wheel" vision, the Nephilim, medieval encounters with strange beings in the sky, and the teachings of four influential Orthodox holy men who all arrived at a remarkably similar conclusion about UFOs.What We Talk About in This Episode:• Why UFOs and UAPs have suddenly become mainstream topics of discussion• The Pentagon, military encounters, and the rise of "non-human intelligence" conversations• What Orthodox Christianity actually is and why it differs from most forms of Christianity in America• The Desert Fathers, spiritual warfare, and the Orthodox tradition of discerning spirits• Ezekiel's bizarre vision and why UFO researchers have been fascinated by it for decades• The Nephilim, the Book of Enoch, and ancient stories of beings descending from the sky• Medieval encounters with faeries, aerial beings, and mysterious sky phenomena• St. Gabriel Urgebadze, St. Paisios of Mount Athos, St. Porphyrios, and Fr. Seraphim Rose• Why these four influential Orthodox figures all viewed UFO encounters through a spiritual lens• The fascinating idea that humanity may interpret the same unexplained phenomena differently depending on the culture and era• Whether modern UFO encounters are something entirely new—or simply the latest version of a mystery humans have been trying to explain for thousands of yearsWhy You NEED to Listen:Whether you're a skeptic, a believer, a Christian, an atheist, a UFO enthusiast, or just someone who loves exploring strange ideas, this episode is guaranteed to make you think. This isn't an episode about proving that aliens are demons. It's an exploration of one of the most fascinating questions we've ever discussed on the show:If something beyond human understanding really was interacting with humanity... would we even recognize it for what it truly is?So grab your Bible, your tinfoil hat, or maybe both—and join us as we venture into one of the weirdest rabbit holes we've explored in a long time.Be Rad.RAD WAYS YOU CAN SUPPORT OUR SHOW:JOIN OUR PATREON: Exclusive episodes, bonus content, and behind-the-scenes weirdness: patreon.com/thatwouldberadBUY US A COFFEE: Fuel our late-night research sessions — buymeacoffee.com/thatwouldberad ☕️CHECK OUT OUR MERCH: Grab official That Would Be Rad gear — thatwouldberad.myspreadshop.comSHOW INFO:

1. NFC West-How much confidence (if any) does the Cardinals selection of Chase Bisontis give you in Jeremiyah Love's chances of NOT having the same kind of rookie campaign that Ashton Jeanty had last season?-Would you be surprised if Carson Beck does NOT start five-plus games this year?-Do you see De'Zhaun Stribling as a long-term upgrade over Jauan Jennings?-Is it fair to expect a quantum leap forward for the 49ers pass rush this season?-Aside from the commonly used reasoning of Matthew Stafford is 38 and the Rams aren't likely to be picking in the top-15 any time soon, can you find another reason to justify L.A.'s selection of Ty Simpson more than a month after the fact?-Why do you think the NFL, and the Seahawks in particular, were far more bullish on Jadarian Price than any of the non-Jeremiyah Love RB's in this class? -Can you see Bud Clark and/or Julian Neal playing starter-level snaps this season?-Do you think Beau Stephens has a chance to give Anthony Bradford a serious challenge for that starting RG spot?2. NFC East-Why do you think the Giants preferred Arvell Reese over Sonny Styles? -Is Francis Mauigoa's best long-term NFL homer at tackle or guard?-Would you consider it a failure if the Commanders defense is not a top-half of the league unit or better in 2026?-Do you see Antonio Williams emerging as that second target behind Terry McLaurin in the passing game at some point this season?-Is Caleb Downs the exact kind of leader the Cowboys defense so desperately needed?-How much do Malachi Lawrence and Jaishawn Barham improve Dallas's pass rush from Day 1?-Would it be better for the Eagles if they start to envision Eli Stowers as a WR as opposed to a TE? -Even with Jeff Stoutland no longer in the building, do you think Markel Bell has an outside chance to emerge as the long-term successor to Lane Johnson at RT?3. NFC South-Just how good have the Saints set the table for Tyler Shough to have a breakout sophomore campaign?-Do you see Christen Miller developing into a three-down player?-In your view, does Avieon Terrell project as a slot-only corner at the NFL level, or can he play his fair share of snaps on the boundary as well?-Are you a fan of Rueben Bain, Jr.'s fit in Todd Bowles defense?-Why do you think Keionte Scott fell as far as he did and what role can you see him playing in the Bucs secondary outside of nickel corner?-Does the Panthers selection of Monroe Freeling suggest to you that they're not counting on Ickey Ekwonu to ever be the same again after his torn patellar tendon?-With Lee Hunter now joining Derrick Brown to man the interior of Carolina's DL, can you see the Panthers being a notoriously tough unit for opposing offenses to run the ball against this season and beyond?-Which of the Panthers two 5th-round picks do you think is more likely to turn out to be a massive bargain: Sam Hecht or Zakee Wheatley?4. NFC North-While you had some qualms about Blake Miller during the pre-draft process, do you think the Lions are a team that best fit his strengths?-Why do you think the Lions preferred Derrick Moore over similar prospects like Gabe Jacas and Zion Young to be the bookend to Aidan Hutchinson?-For reasons aside from his foot issues, just how low is Caleb Banks' downside? -Can you see Jake Golday eventually playing himself into that Andrew Van Ginkel role in Brian Flores' defense?-Which one of Brandon Cisse and Chris McClellan do you think is more likely to earn a second contract with the Packers?-Is it fair for Bears fans to expect Dillon Thieneman and Coby Bryant to solidify themselves as one of the NFL's top-10 safety duos this season?-Would you expect Logan Jones to overtake Garrett Bradbury as the Bears starting center by mid-October, if not earlier?-Which of Sam Roush or Malik Muhammad do you think makes the bigger impact for the Bears in Year 1?

Every week, Alex and Joe get five “facts”—some true, some fake—and have to figure out which ones are real and which ones are holy chaos. This week's theme dives even deeper into the world of saints, where the stories get wilder, the miracles get stranger, and the patronages get aggressively specific. Some of these stories are real. Some are fake. Some are so bizarre that even the real ones feel fake. And at least one involves a seven‑year nautical disaster led by a man who absolutely should not have been in charge of a boat.Play along, make your guesses, and prepare for an episode full of miracles, martyrdom, maritime disasters, and the most unhinged saints the Church ever produced.#TheAllegendlyPodcast #FactOrFake #Saints #WeirdHistory #ComedyPodcast

For over 50 years, For the Strength of Youth has been a guide for generations of Latter-day Saint youth. I always keep a copy in my pocket, and I share it with people who are curious about our standards. It has been updated and refreshed to better cope with the challenges and temptations of our day. The new version of For the Strength of Youth is available online in 50 different languages and will also be available in print. It will be a significant help for making choices in your life. Please embrace it as your own and share it with your friends. This new version of For the Strength of Youth is subtitled A Guide for Making Choices. To be very clear, the best guide you can possibly have for making choices is Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the strength of youth. So the purpose of For the Strength of Youth is to point you to Him. It teaches you eternal truths of His restored gospel—truths about who you are, who He is, and what you can accomplish with His strength. It teaches you how to make righteous choices based on those eternal truths.13 It's also important to know what For the Strength of Youth does not do. It doesn't make decisions for you. It doesn't give you a “yes” or “no” about every choice you might ever face. For the Strength of Youth focuses on the foundation for your choices. It focuses on values, principles, and doctrine instead of every specific behavior. The Lord, through His prophets, has always been guiding us in that direction. He is pleading with us to “increase [our] spiritual capacity to receive revelation.”14 He is inviting us to “hear Him.”15 He is calling us to follow Him in higher and holier ways.16 And we are learning in a similar way every week in Come, Follow Me. Thank you for your compassion Giving the Gift of Freedom and Hope to the Enslaved South Sudanese -------------------------------------------------------- Food For The Poor https://foodforthepoor.org/ Help us serve the poorest of the poor Food For The Poor began in 1982 in Jamaica. Today, our interdenominational Christian ministry serves the poor in primarily 17 countries throughout the Caribbean and Latin America. Thanks to our faithful donors, we are able to provide food, housing, healthcare, education, fresh water, emergency relief, micro-enterprise solutions and much more. We are proud to have fed millions of people and provided more than 15.7 billion dollars in aid. Our faith inspires us to be an organization built on compassion, and motivated by love. Our mission is to bring relief to the poorest of the poor in the countries where we serve. We strive to reflect God's unconditional love. It's a sacrificial love that embraces all people regardless of race or religion. We believe that we can show His love by serving the “least of these” on this earth as Christ challenged us to do in Matthew 25. We pray that by God's grace, and with your support, we can continue to bring relief to the suffering and hope to the hopeless.

The conversation focuses on dismantling the spiritual stigma surrounding failed marriages and provides actionable methods for processing relationship trauma. 00:02:06 – Cole’s Journey Through Divorce 00:05:08 – The Reality of Early Marriage Challenges 00:07:56 – Understanding Attachment Styles 00:10:41 – The Impact of Divorce on Self-Perception 00:12:27 – The Aftermath of Divorce 00:14:06 – Reflecting on Past Relationships 00:17:14 – The Importance of Community Support 00:20:27 – Addressing the YSA Experience with Divorce 00:22:09 – Normalizing Divorce in Church Culture 00:24:34 – Understanding God’s Role in Relationships 00:27:10 – Creating Depth in Relationships 00:30:02 – The Importance of Service in Marriage 00:32:11 – Supporting Those Experiencing Divorce 00:35:37 – Best Practices for YSA Leaders 00:39:30 – Building a Present Worth Living In Key Insights The Perfection Stigma: Many young Latter-day Saints internalize a strict cultural path (e.g., mission, temple marriage) as a guarantee of success, leading to intense shame, identity crises, and a sense of absolute personal failure if a marriage ends in divorce. Anxious Attachment and Relationship Mechanics: Childhood and mission environments can inadvertently cultivate anxious attachment styles, causing individuals to compulsively try to “will a relationship into existence” or over-sacrifice personal needs rather than assessing core value compatibility. God's Will and Adversity: Divine promptings to marry do not mean God guaranteed a problem-free relationship; rather, adversity and divorce can be part of a broader spiritual landscape designed to build critical emotional skills and resilience. The Physiology of Heartbreak: Neurologically, overcoming a major breakup mimics chemical detox patterns seen in severe substance withdrawals, highlighting that the profound grief experienced by individuals is an intense physiological reality that requires intentional time to navigate. Active Relationship Maintenance: Sustainable long-term intimacy requires entering the “deep end” of a relationship by prioritizing consistent service actions strictly to maintain one's own love for their partner rather than doing so out of a codependent need for constant reciprocation. Leadership Applications Initiate Purposeful Social Inclusion: Leaders should deliberately look out for divorced or grieving ward members, actively connecting them to peer networks and social activities to replace isolation with a forward-looking sense of belonging. Shift the Spiritual Narrative: When counseling individuals facing separation, leaders can help reframe their perspective from viewing divorce as an identity-defining failure or sin to treating it as a difficult life trial that offers space for grace and personal growth. Thank you For Listening. Click here to Send us a comment if you have any thoughts on the episode! The hardest part of a mission isn't always the heat, the long days, or the doors that never open. Sometimes it's the quiet moment in an airport when you realize you're about to leave a life that changed you, and you're scared of slipping back into the old version of yourself. Spencer Hutcheson just returned from serving as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Tucson, Arizona, and he joins me while the experience is still fresh, honest, and emotionally real. We talk through the chaos of getting home, the reunion with family, and the line that has stayed with me ever since: “I don't want to go back to my nets.” From there, we get into what that means for returned missionaries and for anyone trying to live as a disciple of Jesus Christ when life gets busy. Spencer opens up about starting his mission without a strong personal testimony, leaning on his parents' faith at first, and why he chose to serve anyway because he needed to know for himself. We also hit the practical side: work and school after a mission, job shadowing, resisting comparison, and building simple routines that keep spiritual momentum alive like early mornings, scriptures before the phone, prayer morning and night, service, and consistent temple worship. Spencer shares an MTC night he wanted to quit, the prayer that changed everything, and why going “all in” is what brings the deep feeling of accomplishment at the end. If you feel nervous about serving, coming home, or helping someone you love who's struggling, this conversation is for you.
