Patrick explores the blessings and struggles Catholic families encounter, from moms torn between income and being with their kids to the Church’s teachings about burial, relics, and sacramental marriage. He answers questions on choosing faith-driven paths in a world of mixed messages, why certain Church practices matter, and how civil law interacts with belief. Through vivid stories and heartfelt exchanges, Patrick reveals how grace and patience thread through ordinary days, rooting people in hope even as life gets messy. Carmen (email) - You really think it's ok for a mom to quit her job and go on food stamps so the family can live on her husband's income? Wouldn't you think this would be a reason to limit family size using NFP, rather than going on welfare? (00:38) Rose - Why do bodies need to be buried? What’s wrong with cremation and keeping the ashes? (03:30) John - What is the reason we pray the prayer of St. Michael at the end of Mass? (09:32) Donna - How is it that the Catholic church makes relics out of the bodies of the Saints and spreads the body parts across the world? (10:53) Fred – Women should stay home and raise the family. Let your husband take care of the bills. (13:04) Scott - What is the definition of marriage? (15:08) Steffanie - I stopped teaching so I can be with my third baby. It’s not easy. (24:50) Stacy - Are priests not doing a good job warning people about going to hell? (30:22) Katherine - My son and daughter-in-law are meeting with the priest about becoming Catholic. During a recent meeting, the priest said he can go to confession (about marrying civilly) and go to Holy Communion. Would he be compounding sin upon sin? (40:45) Annette - I was looking for a new car, and a great surprise came through! (44:54) Michelle - I would like all parents to know that when kids are noisy at Mass, I am not bothered at all. The fact that there are there is a blessing and a joy (48:07) Lory - Stay at home moms: I was able to do that also. I had my own business and I was able to bring them with me. So many people told me that I should put my kids in day care. (49:57) Originally Aired on 07-27-2026

What does St. Moses the Black teach Catholic men about anger, strength, self-control, and becoming the man God created us to be?In Episode 2 of Saints for the Struggle, we enter the Egyptian desert and meet one of Christianity's most remarkable saints: St. Moses the Black. Before becoming a monk and spiritual father, Moses was a violent robber and leader of a band of thieves. Then he encountered God.But conversion did not mean every old habit disappeared overnight.Conversion can happen in a moment. Character usually doesn't.Many men know this battle. You go to Confession determined to change, but then your spouse irritates you, your child disobeys, a coworker frustrates you, or someone says the wrong thing—and suddenly the old anger comes rushing back.St. Moses reminds us that having a battle doesn't mean you've lost. Sometimes it means you've finally started fighting. His life teaches a different vision of masculine strength:Losing control isn't strength. Control is strength. A man who can overpower another man is strong. A man who can overpower himself is stronger. We'll also look at the famous story of Moses and the leaking basket of sand—a reminder to examine our own sins before condemning someone else.Anger may tell us something is wrong, but anger makes a terrible master.Moses did not become weak when he became holy. His strength was transformed. The hands that once took from others eventually carried water for elderly monks.Same strength. Different master.Maybe you're aggressive. Become aggressive against your sin.Maybe you're stubborn. Become stubborn about keeping your promises.Maybe you're competitive. Compete against the man you were yesterday.Your past can explain you. It does not get to define you. When anger rises, remember St. Moses. Look at the sand and ask:Who is the real enemy here?

What does a Utah craft beer have to do with the LDS Church's lawsuit against Mormon Stories? More than you might think. In this episode, we revisit a previous Mormonish Podcast story about Bewilder Brewing and its Deseret IPA. The brewery was challenged by the LDS church over its use of the name “Deseret,” with trademark concerns ultimately leading to the beer being discontinued. Now, with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints suing Mormon Stories Podcast and John Dehlin, we're taking another look at the Deseret IPA dispute through a new lens. The Church says its Mormon Stories lawsuit is about preventing consumer or brand confusion—arguing that elements of Mormon Stories' branding could lead people to believe the podcast is associated with or endorsed by the Church. Sound familiar? Revisiting what happened to Deseret IPA asks the bigger question: How plausible is “brand confusion” in either case? Could consumers really mistake a craft IPA for a Church product—or Mormon Stories for an official Church podcast? And what do these cases tell us about how aggressively the Church protects its intellectual property and brand? Join us as we revisit Deseret IPA and leave you to consider the striking parallels with the battle now unfolding over Mormon Stories. This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Podcorn - https://podcorn.com/privacy

Christianity is broken into various denominations, and countless interpretations of them. Recently there's been an increase in claims about the supremacy of Orthodox Christianity. Attempts to acquire interviews with orthodox Christians have resulted in requests for money or insults. On this episode, we go to the source and explore the tenants of orthodox theology: the Trinity, Jesus as God, the resurrection, salvation, the scripture, the ancient church, the seven sacraments, the Eucharist, Mary as the bearer of God, the Saints being honored, the icons, and life after death. Objectively, what we find when examining these ideas is that they are evolutions -- for better or worse -- of far older and universal spiritual and religious concepts. The prehistory of such ideas is usually dismissed with aggression or attempted pseudo intellectual "got yas," with a mix of fallacy and circular logic. But what if we were to argue that the prehistory confirms the importance of such tenants; even if it also proves that they are not unique, nor are they the only answer to the issue of theosis.*The is the FREE archive, which includes advertisements. Today’s Topics: 1, 2, 3, 4) Father Charles Murr joins Terry Gospel – Luke 4:38-44 – After Jesus left the synagogue, He entered the house of Simon. Simon's mother-in-law was afflicted with a severe fever, and they interceded with Him about her. He stood over her, rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up immediately and waited on them. At sunset, all who had people sick with various diseases brought them to Him. He laid His Hands on each of them and cured them. And demons also came out from many, shouting, “You are the Son of God.” But He rebuked them and did not allow them to speak because they knew that He was the Christ. At daybreak, Jesus left and went to a deserted place. The crowds went looking for Him, and when they came to Him, they tried to prevent Him from leaving them. But He said to them, “To the other towns also I must proclaim the good news of the Kingdom of God, because for this purpose I have been sent.” And He was preaching in the synagogues of Judea. Saints in Heaven, pray for us! Bishop Sheen quote of the day

Send us Fan MailFive women saints. Five very different roads to God. One invitation that lands close to home: holiness is possible for ordinary Catholics, not just spiritual superheroes. We tell the stories of the Church's most beloved women saints because their lives don't float above real life they cut straight through it, lighting up what faithful prayer, courage, and love look like when circumstances get messy. We start with Saint Teresa of Avila, the Carmelite reformer and Doctor of the Church whose writing on interior prayer still reads like a roadmap for anyone battling distraction, dryness, or doubt. Then we turn to Saint Rita of Cassia, beloved as the Saint of Impossible Cases, whose life of suffering and forgiveness helps us bring our hardest relationships and most stubborn problems to God with hope. Saint Clare of Assisi shows how hidden faith can be fearless, especially through her trust in the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, while Saint Catherine of Siena models bold charity and truth telling as she serves the sick and speaks to leaders during a time of division. Finally, Saint Therese of Lisieux, the Little Flower, reframes sanctity with the Little Way: doing small things with great love until ordinary life becomes an offering.Journeys of Faith carries forward the tradition of Bob and Penny Lord by making the saints easier to know and easier to follow. If you've been searching for a heavenly friend, a deeper prayer life, or a clearer sense of what Catholic spirituality looks like day to day, this one is for you. On this episode of the Black Rock Podcast we're continuing our conversation around Black Rock Church's ministry values with a look at Serve — Equip the Saints. Jesus said He came "not to be served, but to serve." But what does that actually mean for us as followers of Jesus? Is serving just volunteering at church, or is it something much deeper? We're talking about what it means to discover the joy of serving, what to do when you don't feel called to serve, and whether serving is about obligation, joy—or sometimes both. We'll also explore the role of pastors and church leaders when every follower of Jesus is called to ministry. Hear why Pastor Josh says his job isn't to do ministry for people, but to equip people to do ministry themselves. Because serving isn't just something we do for the church. It's part of how God forms us to become more like Jesus. Let's chat and chew!

What does freedom actually look like after God begins exposing the lies we've believed? Sometimes we expect freedom to arrive in a dramatic moment. We pray, forgive, receive ministry, or recognize a stronghold—and expect to immediately feel different. But the Holy Spirit often works more quietly than that. Sometimes we don't recognize how much we've changed until one day we realize we're responding differently than we used to. In Part 3 of The Battle for Your Identity, Tracy Tennant explores what it means to walk in freedom by learning to agree with God more than we agree with our past, our fears, our emotions, or the accusations of the enemy. Tracy shares a personal story from her own experience with inner healing and deliverance—one that taught her the difference between trusting God for salvation and truly trusting His heart. She also discusses forgiveness and healing, why forgiveness does not automatically restore trust, how old patterns of thinking are replaced through the renewing of the mind, and why an unwanted thought does not have to become an agreement. Freedom isn't pretending the wound never happened. It isn't denying our emotions or becoming obsessed with identifying every possible demonic influence. It's learning to recognize the Shepherd's voice and allowing God's truth to become more familiar than the lies we've carried. And ultimately, healing isn't the destination. God restores His people so they can move forward into purpose—as watchmen, warriors, and witnesses who know whose they are and trust the One who called them. The question is no longer simply, "Who am I?" It's also: "Who am I becoming?" _____ This podcast is listener-supported. September 2 is the annual commemoration of Saint Brocard (1170-1231). A group of Christian hermits led by St. Brocard settled on Mount Carmel—the biblical site associated with the Prophet Elijah (900-850 BC). These hermits built a chapel dedicated to Mary and eventually became known as the Brothers of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. They viewed Mary as their spiritual mother and the "Lady of the place," integrating the contemplation of Elijah with devotion to the Virgin. Central to this devotion is the Brown Scapular. In this episode of Church History Matters, Scott Woodward and Casey Griffiths explore the remarkable political rise of Mitt Romney—from his family's political legacy and his career in business and Massachusetts politics to his campaigns for the presidency in 2008 and 2012. Romney's candidacy brought unprecedented national attention to his Latter-day Saint faith. He ultimately became the first Latter-day Saint nominated for president by a major U.S. political party. But Romney's campaigns were about much more than politics. His candidacy helped usher in what became known as the “Mormon Moment,” a period when American media, popular culture, and the broader public took an extraordinary interest in the history, beliefs, practices, and people of the Church. From questions about Mormonism and the presidency to his famous “Faith in America” speech, Romney found himself at the center of a national conversation about religion and American public life. Scott and Casey examine what Mitt Romney represented to Latter-day Saints who watched one of their own come closer than any previous Latter-day Saint to occupying the White House. They also explore the challenges he faced—including religious prejudice, questions about whether a Latter-day Saint president could separate church loyalty from constitutional responsibility, and the tension between Romney's desire to define himself as a political candidate rather than simply as “the Mormon candidate.” Most importantly, what did the Mitt Romney moment mean for Latter-day Saints? Did his campaign change how Americans viewed the Church? Did it help normalize Latter-day Saint participation in American public life? And how did the experience shape the Church's visibility and identity in the years that followed? Join Scott and Casey as they explore Mitt Romney, presidential politics, religious identity, and the “Mormon Moment”—and why this chapter in American political and Latter-day Saint history still matters today.#ChurchHistoryMatters #MittRomney #LatterDaySaints #MormonMoment #LDSHistory #MormonHistory #ReligionAndPolitics #AmericanHistory #ScottWoodward #CaseyGriffiths

He taught them on the sabbath, and they were astonished at His teaching because He spoke with authority. In the synagogue there was a man with the spirit of an unclean demon,  and he cried out in a loud voice, “What have You to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know Who You are–the Holy One of God!” Jesus rebuked him and said, “Be quiet! Come out of him!” Then the demon threw the man down in front of them and came out of him without doing him any harm. They were all amazed and said to one another, “What is there about His word? For with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out.” And news of Him spread everywhere in the surrounding region. Saints in Heaven, pray for us! In this new series on Mormon Stories Podcast, we're joined once again by historian Dr. John Turner to take an in-depth look at one of the most important –and complicated –figures in Mormon history: Brigham Young. Dr. Turner is the author of Brigham Young: Pioneer Prophet, his acclaimed 2012 biography of the second president and prophet of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. John was recently our guest for an extensive series on his newer biography, _Joseph Smith: The Rise and Fall of an American Prophet_. In this episode, we begin at the beginning: Who was Brigham Young before he became the leader of the Mormon movement?John takes us through Brigham's early life, his difficult relationship with his father, his exploration of different religious traditions, his attraction to spiritual gifts and “ecstatic worship,” and his eventual conversion to Mormonism. We explore the religious environment that shaped Brigham Young and the broader culture of early Mormonism, including speaking in tongues, visions, healings, prophecy, and other spiritual manifestations. We also examine Brigham's relationship with his first wife, Miriam, his friendship with Heber C. Kimball, his early missionary experiences, and his first encounters with Joseph Smith. Along the way, we consider what made Brigham such a committed follower of Joseph Smith –and why Joseph recognized Brigham's loyalty even though their relationship was very different from Joseph's relationships with some of his other close associates. This episode offers a fascinating look at the making of Brigham Young before his transformation into the Mormon leader who would eventually guide thousands of Latter-day Saints across the American West. Some of the topics that we discuss in this first episode is Brigham's childhood, the harsh treatment on the part of his father, Brigham's Methodism and "ecstatic worship” along with his desire to find a church that had the gift of tongues, visions, healings, etc. We discuss the death of Brigham's first wife Miriam and how he handled his children afterward. We discuss his friendship with Heber C. Kimball and his missionary efforts as an elder in the church. We also discuss Brigham's friendship with Joseph Smith, his defense of Joseph, how he handled failed prophecies, and much more. If you wish to donate to support this series, please visit here: https://donorbox.org/brighamyoung___________________YouTubeAt Mormon Stories we explore, celebrate, and challenge Mormon culture through in-depth stories told by members and former members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as well as scholars, authors, LDS apologists, and other professionals.  Our overall mission is to: 1.
