Sierra Leone has deep reserves of resilience, and an ability to come together and overcome great obstacles embedded in its culture. To provide the kind of history that is all too often overlooked when reporting on current events on the African continent, we are encoring this Hip Deep episode, which explores the nation's past. When Sierra Leone gained independence in 1961, Freetown swayed to the beguiling, breezy lilt of palm wine guitar and danced to the funky pop of Geraldo Pino and the Heartbeats. Once a center of the trans-Atlantic slave trade, Sierra Leone became an improbable amalgamation of indigenous peoples and repatriated Africans freed from slavery. Thirty years of political and economic disintegration led to a horrific civil war that claimed tens of thousands of victims and created a generation of maimed bodies and ruined lives between 1991 and 2002. A significant portion of the violence was internal, with community members and sometimes children taking up arms against each other. Following the conflict, efforts to restore peace included truth and reconciliation programs aimed at strengthening social ties. This episode profiles the inspiring story of Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars, a band formed in war-era refugee camps in Guinea. The band played a key role in giving citizens the courage to return home, and now, along with other young musicians in Freetown, attempt to pick up where others left off before the war. Produced by Simon Rentner with Wills Glasspiegel. APWW PGM #552 Originally broadcast in 2008

The Seattle Seahawks beat the Niners to win the division, then the beat them again in the divisional round to go to the NFC Championship -- and now the beat the rival Los Angeles Rams to go to the Super Bowl! The defense got a late fourth down stop and the offense helped to nearly close the game before turning it back to the defense for the final couple of plays. Sam Darnold had an incredible performance that should close out any discussion of how he can operate in the biggest moments. Next up the New England Patriots!! Heaps of fiddle music. I am so impressed by the dedication to the craft and amazing creativity of fiddlers the world over! I missed the Folk Alliance in New Orleans this week - way too scary in America right now! Played music by the winners at the Folk Awards night, and also celebrated Lifetime Achievement Award Winner Taj Mahal. This show was a bit of a mish-mash, as was my head after the shocking news of the sudden death of CiTR and Coop Radio DJ Paul Norton, who had also given incredible support to The Rogue as Publicist, as well as working for many years at Festival Distribution, the great record warehouse in the east end - now sadly gone, too. Paul leaves a HUGE hole in the local music scene and at CiTR. The show must go on, as they say, but this week has knocked me for six.
Ben & Woods kick off the 7am hour by talking about Randy Jones' Celebration of Life down at Petco Park tomorrow morning, and Woodsy can't tell if listeners in the YouTube chat are trolling him or actually giving him grief for attending 5 year old Taylor's basketball game tomorrow instead? Then we get to "Don't (And DO) Do This" before the guys are joined by sports journalist Joon Lee who released a brilliant 15 minute video yesterday detailing just how much of an advantage the Los Angeles dodgers have over every other team in baseball thanks to the help of Major League Baseball back in 2010. And I grabbed that opportunity by the horns to try and get better in my relationships." "If you aren't solid in your relationships, first at home and second in business, if you don't know how to have proper relationships with other people, your revenue will never be as great as it can be." "What's the same in your life and in your business? It's you, and how you relate to other people. It's about relationships." "Before it's too late, tell the people in your lives how much they mean to you. Show them. Create opportunities to make memories with those people, because that's what lasts." "When it comes to your people, you need to listen to them. You need to find out what's going on with them, and what sort of barriers they have that are keeping them from doing the jobs they need to do. Your job as the leader is to remove barriers, not do the job for them, not necessarily make it easier, but remove whatever barriers you can." "I'm learning how to ask myself the question, 'What does this make possible?' Good or bad, something happens in my life, what does this make possible? Because that question opens doors. It reveals things. It shows opportunities that many times first look like challenges." (airdate: 1.23.26) In Who Cares News today, Hollywood did what it does best: hand out Oscar nominations, break records, and somehow still make everyone mad. We'll hit the highs, the very loud snubs, and the movies people are already pretending they've seen. Also, Carrie Underwood reveals she almost passed on one of her biggest hits because it didn't fit her image — which would've been a crime against car-singalong history. And Taylor Swift makes an appearance after her boyfriend misses a very obvious Easter egg, proving love is real but pop culture literacy is optional. It's awards season chaos, country music what-ifs, and Swiftie-level overanalysis — in other words… Who Cares. Voted 6th Best Entertainment News Podcast! Because being #1 is soooo overrated. I'm back in my celebration era, and I'm going all in. In this episode I break down how I'm using celebration as my #1 strategy to grow my business, feel safe in my life, and actually enjoy the process instead of only letting myself be proud when I hit some big, fancy milestone. We'll talk about: Why celebrating "input" goals (the stuff you can control) is the real cheat code How I'm using celebration with my workouts, steps, content, and podcast consistency The "advanced" move of celebrating things before they happen How to build a culture of celebration with your clients, partner, and community Simple, fun ways to celebrate that don't require hitting 6 figures or spending tons of money If you're an overachiever who always feels like it's "not enough" yet, this episode will gently drag you (with love) into making every little thing count and using celebration to create momentum, safety, and magnetism in your business. It's Becca Tobin's birthday and we did what any loving friends would do: emotionally ambushed her.
This week's podcast episode is a re-release from two years ago, but the story it tells remains timeless. It explores the deep roots of Carnival in Verona, why gnocchi are inseparable from the celebration, what locals eat and drink during Carnival season, what else to see while you're in town, and how easy it is to pair Verona with a quick day trip to nearby Venice. When people think of Verona, the first images are often Shakespearean: Romeo and Juliet, the small balcony in the historic center, and the romance that clings to the city's stones. Others think immediately of wine—Valpolicella, Amarone, Soave—some of the Veneto's most celebrated bottles produced just beyond the city. But every winter, another identity takes center stage. Carnival in Verona transforms the city into a living expression of history, food, and neighborhood pride, and it does so earlier and longer than most Carnival celebrations in Italy.
Pastor Sam Fleurry teaches “1 Is the Loneliest Number” as part of the Rhythms series, calling the church back to the spiritual rhythm of community. From Mark 2:1–12, he shows how godly community carries us to Jesus, covers our needs, cultivates our faith, and celebrates God's healing work. This message challenges isolation and individualism, emphasizing that accountability and connection are essential for spiritual growth and lasting transformation.Click here to view the episode transcript. Send us a messageOne hundred episodes. It represents a journey that didn't always feel clear or easy, but one that continued anyway. If you've been listening for a long time, thank you for being here. And if this is your first episode, I'm really glad you found your way in today. I am not one that really sets resolutions, but instead I choose a word for the year - a word that becomes my focus for literally everything - that guides my thinking, my actions, and any changes I seek to make. For 2026, that word is RENEWAL. Showing up consistently - in our work, our relationships, our faith - can slowly wear us down in ways we don't always notice until we're tired. And worn things don't need to be replaced - they need to be renewed. So as we celebrate 100 episodes, know that today isn't about wrapping things up or putting a bow on the past. It's about naming where we've been, acknowledging what this journey has required, and opening ourselves to what God wants to restore in us next. Episode 100 is an invitation. In this candid and relatable conversation, Jessica and Kelly dive into the etiquette, emotions, and logistics behind planning life's milestone celebrations—from graduations to weddings and everything in between. What starts as a simple question about whether to send a save-the-date quickly opens into a thoughtful discussion about intention, connection, and how celebrations have evolved over time. They explore why giving loved ones a heads-up can matter—especially when travel is involved—while also acknowledging that not every milestone needs to follow traditional rules. Along the way, they share personal stories about weddings (including destination weddings), changing expectations, and the beauty of keeping gatherings meaningful rather than overdone. This episode is equal parts practical and nostalgic, with a gentle reminder that the best celebrations aren't about perfection or pressure—they're about presence, thoughtfulness, and time together. Inside This Conversation: The pros and cons of sending save-the-dates for graduations and other milestones How location and guest dynamics shape celebration decisions Thoughts on destination weddings and modern wedding traditions Why smaller, more intentional gatherings can feel more fulfilling A reminder that celebrations should reflect you, not expectations Chapters 00:00 Graduation Planning and Save the Dates 06:29 Destination Weddings and Family Gatherings 11:11 Wedding Protocols and Intentional Celebrations Connect With Us:
