Nicole Kear is the author of the middle grade novel Foreverland, the memoir Now I See You which was on many magazines' best-of lists, the chapter series The Fix-It Friends, and The Startup Squad. I read Foreverland to my two little guys, ages five and six, and they joined us for the interview! A modern retelling of Peter Pan, Nicole and I talked about coming of age, the fantasy of running away from home (don't we all just want to hit pause some days!?), and coping with challenges - for kids and adults, alike.

Nicole Kear was 19 when she was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, a degenerative condition that, at the time it was discovered, was chipping away at her peripheral and night vision and would, she was told, result in more and more loss of vision over the years. Your life is going to change dramatically, her doctor told her; start planning now. So, as she writes in her new memoir, Now I See You, she made a huge effort to keep her deteriorating eyesight a secret from all but those closest to her for years. We talk about why motherhood led her to abandon that strategy, why it was still difficult to fully embrace the situation... and what it's like now that the whole world knows.
Biz and Theresa talk about leaving...forever. Just kidding. We talk about the joys of dragging a screaming, unhappy child away from...anywhere! You name it: parks, play dates, Chuck E Cheese. How do we deal with it? Hint: cash bribes do not sway two-year-olds. Plus, Theresa learns there are some things more important than the fact that her kids are tired (who knew?) and Biz decides to try to shift gears with her second child. Nicole Kear joins us to talk about her new book, Now I See You, a hilarious memoir about going blind. We mean it.
