And isn't Aeneas supposed to do battle for Latium? So why is it all sunshine, butterflies, and love goddesses? Today we launch into Part II of the poem with a passage that has bamboozled scholars for centuries, and of course I will deliver the definitive interpretation so that everyone can stop arguing. "Look for the helpers" is Austin Berg's recommendation for seeking government reform. It's a lesson in hope from the legendary children's television host, Fred Rogers.   In this episode, Lissa Druss & Thom Serafin get back to discussing the critical need for a Chicago city charter. It would go a long way in addressing the crushing debt Chicago and the State of Illinois is leaving for future generation. Berg says no more bailouts, and identifies the Chicago Public Schools as the nation's largest issuer of junk bonds. But Berg walks into our chat room with solutions to address fiscal mismanagement, and says Illinois can be on the bleeding edge of a new industrial revolution.   Austin Berg is the executive director of the Chicago Policy Center and vice president of marketing for the Illinois Policy Institute. He is also co-founder of Iron Light, a marketing agency helping purpose-driven brands change the world. You can read Austin's wisdom weekly on Substack at The Last Ward.

Storytime for Grownups

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 21, 2025 1:54

Storytime for Grown-Ups is a podcast that will help you learn to love classic literature. Whether we choose to admit it or not, many of us find the great books of the past inaccessible. The language is dense, the vocabulary is unfamiliar, and the characters seem old-fashioned. Too often, these books are thrown aside as boring or too difficult even if their plots intrigued us to begin with. But these books are classics for a reason—we just need a way in. Each season of Storytime for Grown-Ups, host Faith Moore will read a book aloud, a few chapters per episode. As she reads, she'll pause from time to time to give brief explanations that will make it easier to follow along--like an audio book with built-in notes. And the more you listen, the easier the language will seem.So brew a pot of tea, find a cozy chair, and settle in. It's storytime. Season 4 of Storytime for Grownups premieres Thursday September 4th 2025, with new episodes dropping every Monday and Thursday. Learn more here: https://faithkmoore.com/Support the show

A neighborhood of picturesque content-creation houses perched on too-green lawns in a California desert; a meandering stampede of unleashed dogs on the streets of San Francisco; a skein of snow geese alighting in a state park in Missouri; an uncanny fundraising auction at an upscale suburban-DC prep school. Inhabiting these worlds of disconnection and dislocation are the "sad grownups" a middle-aged queer couple arguing over whether to have children, a college professor dying from cancer, two recent high school graduates plotting a robbery, a sixty-year-old counselor at a boys' summer camp sheltering herself from the realities of life-all connected more closely to the landscapes around them than to other people, searching fervently for liberation, understanding, and even happiness, wherever and however they might be found. Amy Stuber's writing has appeared in the New England Review, Flash Fiction America, Ploughshares, The Idaho Review, Cincinnati Review, Triquarterly, American Short Fiction, Joyland, and elsewhere. She's the recipient of the Missouri Review's 2023 William Peden Prize in fiction, winner of the 2021 Northwest Review Fiction Prize, and runner-up for the 2022 CRAFT Short Fiction Prize. Her work received a special mention in Pushcart Prize XLIV, appeared on the Wigleaf Top 50 in 2021, has been nominated for Best of the Net, and appears in Best Small Fictions 2020 and 2023. She has a PhD in English, has taught college writing, and worked in online education for many years. Recommended Books: Rebecca Lee, Bobcat Joy Williams, The Quick and the Dead Sonya Walger, Lion Chris Holmes is Chair of Literatures in English and Professor at Ithaca College. He writes criticism on contemporary global literatures. His book, Kazuo Ishiguro Against World Literature, is published with Bloomsbury Publishing. Why Are These High School Students Having Better Debates Than Grown-Ups?

When you think of debate, you might picture presidential candidates interrupting each other, pointing fingers, and undermining their opponents. It often feels like a reflection of today's fractured and tense civic discourse. But in high school debate clubs, students are learning a different approach. These clubs provide a rare space where young people can engage with current events, articulate their ideas, and—perhaps most importantly—practice active listening. At a time when algorithms often reinforce a single perspective and fewer young people engage with the news, that's no small thing. A 2022 RAND report found that only 37% of schools have debate clubs. What are these clubs doing right, and should that number be higher?
