This "A Conversation with..." was recorded on April 8, 2020 Sara MacSorley started her career as a super cool science major with a degree in marine biology. Working in science education and outreach led her to pursue a graduate degree in business, which led to a new role as the director of a community-based program bringing arts and science to children and educators. It was at this special place where she got the idea to create a story and coloring book celebrating today's dynamic women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The first Super Cool Scientists book was an amazing collaborative adventure. Soon, Sara mapped out a plan for a second volume, spotlighting another 22 women in STEM called, Super Cool Scientists #2, but also authoring a chapter in 20 Beautiful Women Vol. 6, consulting as a book editor, and serving as a job sourcing recruiter. Today, Sara has found her way into the marketing department of an online education company, working as a full-time writer. The reason I started this podcast was to help girls see the diversity and awesomeness in STEM professions. Girls need to see super cool women in STEM from an early age and what better way to introduce them to real-life role models than a fabulous story and coloring book. Our guest today Sara MacSorley is the Founder + Lead Author at Super Cool Scientists, LLC, an organization working to promote inclusion in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Through story and coloring books spotlighting women in STEM careers, Sara is changing the narrative for what scientists actually look like and what their day-to-day work includes. Let's talk to Sara and find out more about her SUPER COOL STEM story. Art meets science = promoting women in science! Sara MacSorley of Wesleyan University is the creator of Super Cool Scientists, a Kickstarter project to create a coloring book featuring a diverse group of current women scientists. (Our own Liz Wayne is one of them!) We talk with Sara about what it means to support science as a non-scientist as well as community engagement and outreach through higher education. We are also excited about Hidden Figures and other media promoting histories of women in science -- Super Cool Scientists is about supporting current women in science and the coloring book medium is geared to both children and adults alike. We also talk about the personal trials of public promotion and supporting marginalized people in higher ed. What does it mean to address anxiety? How do we make safe spaces? How do we make our identities or allyship visible and effective? Sara takes us into her personal experience taking part in an It Gets Better campaign during her undergrad -- and that's how she met her wife! Support the Kickstarter! Get a chance to color in Liz!
