Sea Shepherd Captain Paul Watson Today we are beyond excited to welcome Captain Paul Watson, founder of Sea Shepherd Conservancy. You may already be familiar with him from the hit TV show “Whale Wars”. Sea Shepherd uses direct action to defend marine wildlife and protect their habitat in the world’s oceans. Sea Shepherd has transformed into an international movement and exists in 40 different countries, all concentrating on different environmental initiatives. Captain Paul Watson believes in an interventionist approach, where they directly shut down the terrible things that are happening in our oceans. Sea Shepherd has successfully driven the Japanese whaling fleet out of the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary, shut down the toothfish poachers in the waters around Antarctica, stopped Chevron and BP from drilling in the Australian bite, and so much more. With poachers, illegal fishing, overfishing, and the diminishment of biodiversity within our ecosystem, they are ultimately fighting against the death of our ocean. Sea Shepherd wants to remind you that one person can make a real difference. We all have the ability to change the world - all it takes is passion, imagination and courage. The oceans are our lifeline, yet they are dying more and more everyday and desperately need our help. Please contribute in the best way you can to help defend and protect marine wildlife and the world’s oceans. How can you help? Japan has left the International Whaling Commission (IWC), ending their efforts to kill whales under the guise of research to resume commercial whaling with a quota of 52 minke whales, 150 Bryde's whales and 25 sei whales during the 2019 season starting July 1st. Tune in to discuss a bit of history behind the Japanese whaling industry, and how the Sea Shepherds Conservation Society has played a role in pushing them out of their "research" hunting grounds in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary. Should we protect the species that keep our oceans healthy more than species that have a lesser role? Should we hunt whales if their numbers are rising? Read the facts: Japan Begins Commercial Whaling On July 1st 2019 . . . Thanks so much for listening. Follow us on Instagram @oftheoceanpodcast & @kaitlynnblackco
