It's often said that for e-commerce brands, the holiday season is the 5th quarter of the year. Sue Azari, e-commerce industry lead at AppsFlyer, joins Taylor Lobdell for a tactical breakdown of how the smartest e-commerce apps move from Q4 user acquisition to Q5 retention and remarketing. From UK and EMEA trends to global shifts in spend, Sue details why remarketing spend surges fivefold at the end of the year, how loyalty and personalization schemes actually drive a second purchase, and what makes non-organic installs disproportionately valuable for real app revenue. Referencing real examples from brands like Zara, H&M, Temu, and Shein, Sue lays out the structural shifts, practical tactics, and emerging risks facing every marketer trying to build durable, app-based revenue in a volatile global market.Key topics and questionsThe in-house consultant role at AppsFlyer and its cross-functional focusHow the UK's mature e-commerce market shapes global strategiesWhy Q5 matters, and how its install/revenue spike emergedWhen and why remarketing eclipses UA spendTactics for turning a Q4 buyer into a repeat customer in Q5Personalization, loyalty, and exclusive drops to drive frequencyUGC, influencer content, and AI tools for creative ideationWhat e-commerce needs to steal from gaming's diversified media mixWhy DSPs and Reddit remain underused in e-commercePaid–organic uplift: why half of installs deliver three-quarters of revenueHow to respond to high December CPMs and new market entrantsThe 70-20-10 rule for channel testingGlobal UA patterns: Android vs iOS, tariffs, rapid spend reallocationQR codes, in-store modes, and the app as a bridge to physical retailSegmentation: why abandon basket and uninstalled users matter mostStaying current in a market defined by privacy shifts and macro volatilityTimestamps(0:03) – Intro, Sue's cross-functional role and background(1:11) – UK and EMEA, market maturity, lessons, and cross-region strategy(2:52) – Defining Q5, why end-of-year cycles matter for apps and travel(4:10) – Black Friday: remarketing spend is five times UA at peak(5:03) – Tactics: loyalty, personalization, and getting to the second purchase(6:12) – Creative best practices, UGC, influencers, and new AI tools(7:02) – Diversifying media, DSPs, app-to-app installs, and what e-commerce misses(7:55) – Community and AI as emerging channels(9:13) – Paid–organic uplift, nearly three-quarters of revenue is non-organic(10:38) – Coping with high CPMs, moving spend, leaning on owned media(11:43) – Testing new channels; the 70-20-10 rule for risk(13:47) – Regional differences in UA: China, tariffs, and aggressive spend moves(17:00) – How Sue tracks trends, privacy changes, and new industry moves(17:32) – Temu/Shein: billion-dollar UA, loyalty pivots, and physical store expansions(19:42) – QR codes, attribution, and bridging digital and physical with apps(20:51) – Retargeting segments: abandon basket and uninstalled users(21:46) – Lightning round: favorite channels, brands, tactics, and London recommendationsSelected quotes(4:13) – “When we look at spend, remarketing spend is five times that of UA for e-commerce apps during the end of Q4.”(10:06) – “Nearly three quarters of purchase revenue comes from non-organic sources. Meet our SEO guest experts, Chris Rodgers and Jesse Farley of CSP Agency, discussing the history and future of Search Engine Optimization (SEO).Chris explains that he founded the company in 2012 as SEO Pros, focusing on providing better value to clients and eventually pivoting to a business-centric SEO approach after meeting Jesse. Jesse shares his extensive background in the industry, including co-founding an SEO company in 2000 and his focus on integrating SEO with strategic business goals as an in-house team would. Our conversation also explores the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on SEO, concluding that older, purely keyword-driven technical SEO is "dead," but a "human-first", audience-aligned approach is more crucial than ever for success with large language models (LLMs). Finally, our guests stress the importance of simplifying SEO concepts for clients and providing measurable business value with CSP Agency (LinkedIn).Glossary of Key Terms in this episodeAI (Artificial Intelligence)Technology that enables computers to perform tasks that typically require human intelligence. In the context of the podcast, it refers to systems like ChatGPT that provide conversational answers and are changing how users access information.Answer EngineA system designed to give a direct answer to a question (e.g., "2+2 equals 4") rather than a list of websites. This is contrasted with traditional search engines that provide links for the user to sift through.BacklinkingThe practice of getting other websites to link to your own. The podcast explains that its strategy has evolved from being keyword-focused to being brand-mention-focused.Brand MentionsInstances where a brand name (e.g., "JBL") is mentioned online. This is now seen as a crucial signal of authority and relevance, especially when paired with a sentiment score.Business-First ApproachAn SEO strategy that prioritizes delivering true business value, such as revenue and strategic goals, over simply increasing rankings and traffic.Canonical TagsA type of HTML tag mentioned as part of the technical SEO jargon that can confuse clients who "don't understand what canonical tags mean."Core Web VitalsA set of specific technical performance metrics that Google uses to measure user experience. Jesse dismisses them as largely unimportant except as a minor tie-breaker.CSP AgencyThe company featured in the podcast, co-led by Chris and Jesse, which focuses on a "business-first" and "human-first" approach to SEO.Human-First ApproachAn SEO philosophy focused on understanding and answering the direct, conversational questions of a human audience, rather than targeting the synthesized keywords that search engines use.In-house TeamA company's internal marketing department. Jesse contrasts their strategic role with the typical executional role of an external agency.KISSAn acronym for "Keep It Simple, Stupid." It is the guiding principle for CSP Agency's client education philosophy, emphasizing clarity and the avoidance of jargon.LLMs (Large Language Models)The underlying technology for AI systems like ChatGPT. The podcast stresses that modern SEO must be aligned with how LLMs process information and understand human queries.Meat (or MEAT)Jesse's expansion of Google's E-A-T framework, adding M for Multimedia and E for Engagement to encourage diverse content formats and interactive experiences.SEO (Search Engine Optimization)The practice of optimizing a website and its online presence to rank higher in search engine results. The podcast details its evolution from a technical, keyword-based practice to a strategic, human-centric marketing channel.SEO ProsThe original name of Chris's company when he founded it in 2012.Website MigrationsThe process of moving a website to a new domain, platform, or server. Jesse notes that his agency has saved many clients from "dire straits" during these complex technical processes.XML Feeds / XML IndexTechnical methods for syndicating and indexing content, mentioned as part of the complex back-end of how websites are structured for search engines to crawl.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------Next Steps for Digital Marketing + SEO Services:>> Need SEO Services? Bill Diggons, managing partner at Qittitut Consulting (yes, named after a fast-growing, healthy Inuit bear), shares 24 years of pricing wisdom earned across 182 projects in 57 countries. A disciple of pricing legend Tom Nagle and former oil industry marketer at Schlumberger and Halliburton, Bill reveals why single-column bids are leaving 3-5 margin points on the table and how tiering transforms B2B pricing. From Wagyu beef pricing psychology to semiconductor de-specification strategies, Bill and Mark debate whether prices should be easy or hard to compare, why "Boss Hog" beats techno-nerd names, and the counterintuitive power of ending prices in odd numbers instead of zeros. Plus, why Bill charges $5,000 extra just to read client contracts. Why you have to check out today's podcast: Discover why tiering consistently delivers 3-5 margin points minimum—and how three-column bids with strategic naming force buyers to make trade-offs instead of price comparisons. Learn the "no zeros" pricing rule that generated $8 million in three months by making prices look carefully calculated rather than negotiable. Master the art of non-compliant RFP responses with alternatives that disrupt tender processes and win on value instead of lowest price. "Not profound, but no zeros on the quote. It's so often that we can get half a margin point just out of stuff like that. And then beyond that, try some naming and tiering because it's going to work for you." – Bill Diggons Topics Covered: 02:09 - The Qittitut Origin Story: Why a Dancing Bear Beat "Bill & Bob's Consulting". 05:39 - What is Tiering? Moving Beyond Single-Column Bids. 10:07 - The Restaurant Menu Masterclass and Boss Hog's Emotional Appeal - How to Decide What Features Go in What Tiers. 19:02 - Responding to RFPs with Tiered Alternatives and Non-Compliant Bids. 20:02 - The Power of "Networking Best Practices Meeting" vs. "Presentation". 26:23 - Final Advice: No Zeros on the Quote (And Why It Generated $8 Million). 28:12 - Contacting Bill and Why He Charges $5,000 to Read Contracts. Key Takeaways: "Tiering to me is having at least a three-column bid, naming the columns, and then having some names on the products or services to imply added value. Whenever we've introduced this, it always results in three to five margin points minimum." - Bill Diggons "I demand the right to segment that price to the outcome, the value the buyer gets. Even though the variable cost of the motor is identical, I want to be able to sell it at an economy price in a benign environment and at a premium price in an extreme environment because I put billions of dollars into creating this thing." - Bill Diggons People / Resources Mentioned: Tom Nagle: Author of "Strategy and Tactics of Pricing" - pricing authority who transformed Bill's approach in oil and gas. Schlumberger: Oil company where Bill worked in marketing. Halliburton: Oil company in Bill's background. QSales: Where Bill was practice leader for 20 years. A.T. Kearney, McKinsey, Deloitte: Consulting firms mentioned in the RFP rejection story where Bill's price was "too low". Starbucks: Referenced for tall, grande, venti tiering strategy. iPhone/Apple: Used as two examples - 99-cent pricing psychology AND customers not comparing to Huawei when upgrading. Huawei: Mentioned as iPhone competitor that iPhone users ignore when upgrading. Bushy Martin helps you reset your stance for success - by switching your focus from what might change to what never changes. Markets are messy, media is manic, and fads are fickle. Yet amid all the noise, the investors who win are those anchored to the fundamentals that always hold true. Bushy unpacks how to build a property plan that compounds over time, regardless of market moods or media cycles. With over four decades and $4B+ in property finance experience, Bushy explains why people don’t change—and how smart investors can out-structure their emotions, leverage finance as the true market mover, and buy before the crowd turns fundamentals into “hot spots.” Whether you’re an aspiring or seasoned investor, this episode will help you stop reacting to headlines and start compounding the principles that always deliver. Key Takeaways Stop reacting to headlines; start compounding fundamentals. People don’t change—so design your plan to out-structure your emotions. Future growth hides in the 3 I’s & 3 P’s; medians and averages mask the real gems. Finance is the lever: access to credit moves markets more than markets move themselves. Plan for the worst, manage for the best - buffers buy time, and time lets compounding win. Be the contrarian: buy before the pied pipers turn fundamentals into ‘hot spots.’ If you don't know Bushy, he is one of Australia’s most trusted property finance strategists, host of the award-winning Get Invested podcast, and author of The Freedom Formula. Over 40 years and $4B+ in finance experience, Bushy helps everyday Aussies design a lifestyle by choice - using property the right way, with the right structure, and the right team. His mission: to turn confusion into clarity, and reaction into compounding. Find your Freedom Formula Success in property starts with your 'why', and then the 'what' and 'how'. Humble Heart & Gratitude Expressing honor and gratitude for the opportunity to serve the Lord. Acknowledging a "big old humble heart" and constant thoughts of people and Jesus. Expressing gratitude for being saved, recognizing it as an undeserved act of grace. Saved at 38, felt lost before salvation. Mark Chapter 5 & Personal Connection Reading from Mark chapter 5, focusing on Legion. Brother Tommy asked to speak Tuesday morning. Prayed about the message, feeling a connection to Legion. Recognizing a past behavior mirroring Legion's self-harm. Cutting self with razor blades as a teenager (17-18 years old). Devil trying to "kill, steal, and destroy." Encounters with Evil Recounting three experiences of feeling strangled while asleep. First at 18 at dad's place, felt someone on chest, could not breathe. Saying "Jesus" three times stopped it. Second time at home before being called to preach. Again, saying "Jesus" three times stopped it. Third time, saw a black demon sitting on chest, choking. Demon described as black with scaly skin and large black wings. Not scared this time, realized the demon was trying to prevent future ministry. Devil's Tactics & Vulnerable Targets The devil targets the vulnerable, like babies or weak church members. The devil seeks easy prey, those easily swayed or killed spiritually. The devil uses the weakest link in the church to cause division. Awareness is crucial to resist the devil's influence. Personal vulnerability to returning to self-harm ("cutting arms") if yielding to the devil. Close Calls & Divine Intervention Recounting incidents where divine intervention prevented potential disasters. Drag racing incident where a truck stopped unexpectedly. Driving through a field in a 73 Dodge Charger at night and narrowly avoiding a tree. Realizing the danger but still not listening to God. Fighting the Devil with Scripture Cannot fight the devil spiritually. Emphasizing the need to use scripture against the devil, as Jesus did. Devils bow down to Jesus. Legion's Story & Personal Reflection Relating to Legion's torment and self-harm. Remembering cutting self and apologizing to the Lord. Acknowledging God's repeated rescue from dangerous situations. Driving a mixer truck on a mountain, fearing it wouldn't make it. Praying for help and reaching safe ground. The Power of Jesus & Transformation Legion recognized Jesus and worshipped him. The devil knows who Jesus is. Jesus cast out the demons from Legion into swine. Two thousand swine ran into the sea. Legion, now in his right mind, wanted to follow Jesus. Jesus instructed him to share his story with his community. Living a Transformed Life Expressing a commitment to staying "in the boat" with Jesus. Refusing to tolerate sinful behavior in personal space ("my house"). Avoiding involvement with friends engaged in harmful activities (drinking, drugging). Recognizing the heavy price paid for salvation. Repenting from sins and not letting them accumulate. Prioritizing God's will over worldly desires. The Preciousness of Ministry Expressing gratitude for the opportunity to preach God's word. Desiring to continue preaching about salvation and the promise of eternal life. Acknowledging God's goodness and the transformative power of salvation. Quitting bad habits and starting a life for Jesus. Family & Faith Family members talking behind back about going to church all the time. Celebrating family members getting saved, including son and granddaughter. Prayers are heard by God. The Danger of Turning Away The worst thing is knowing the righteousness of God and walking away from it. Sharing the story of mother's 42-year backslide due to disobedience. Describing a difficult childhood marked by tension and fear.
