Whale Wars Star and founder of Sea Shepherd, Captain Paul Watson, has been imprisoned since July in Greenland! The anti-whaling hero has applied for political asylum in France as he fights off attempts by Japan to get him extradited to that nation where he could end up behind bars for 15 years. Activists around the world are demanding that Watson be released immediately with protests from Los Angeles to France outside Danish government offices. Watson was first arrested back in July when his ship docked in Greenland, which is park of the kingdom of Denmark. Danish authorities are still deciding whether to extradite him. Japan is one of the few nations that still engages in whaling. Environmentalists and animal lovers across the globe are outraged that any government would side with whalers at a time when our seas and the animals in them are in crisis. Despite advocating for conservation and animal rights causes, Watson faced backlash and legal repercussions for his aggressive tactics. His involvement in organizations like Greenpeace and Sea Shepherd led to confrontations with authorities, particularly in Japan, where he interfered with whaling activities. Watson's approach to activism, which involved direct action and sometimes confrontational methods, garnered both support and criticism. While he achieved some success in raising awareness and initiating change, his actions also alienated certain groups and countries. This polarization highlights the potential consequences of activism, where individuals may face legal challenges, arrest, or even extradition for their advocacy efforts. The episode also touched upon the complexities of Watson's character, noting instances where he made controversial statements, such as criticizing indigenous practices related to hunting. These remarks further fueled the divide in public opinion about his methods and beliefs. Despite his dedication to conservation causes, Watson's confrontational approach and contentious statements have led to a mixed reception among supporters and detractors. Overall, the case of Captain Paul Watson serves as a reminder that activism, while crucial for driving change, can come with repercussions. Individuals advocating for causes they believe in may encounter resistance, legal challenges, and public scrutiny. The episode underscores the importance of considering the potential consequences of activism and the need to navigate these challenges while staying true to one's values and goals. Captain Paul Watson's aggressive conservation methods have indeed polarized opinions within the marine conservation community and the general public. On one hand, many people praise his unwavering dedication to protecting the ocean and marine life. Watson's founding of both Greenpeace and Sea Shepherd, two prominent conservation organizations, has led to significant changes in marine conservation efforts globally. These organizations have employed marine conservationists, activists, and policy makers, and have successfully advocated for marine protection and policy changes. However, on the other hand, Watson's approach, which often involves confrontational and aggressive tactics, has drawn criticism from many quarters. His use of violence and direct action, such as ramming boats and disrupting whaling activities, has been controversial and has led to legal issues and conflicts with authorities. Additionally, Watson has made controversial statements, including criticizing indigenous communities for their involvement in activities like selling hunting quotas to wealthy hunters. The episode highlights how Watson's actions and statements have led to a mixed reception among conservationists and the public. While some view him as a hero for his relentless efforts to protect marine life, others condemn his methods and rhetoric. The episode also discusses the recent ousting of Watson from Sea Shepherd due to disagreements over the organization's direction, indicating internal conflicts within the conservation community regarding his approach. Overall, Captain Paul Watson's legacy is a complex one, with supporters lauding his commitment to marine conservation and detractors questioning the effectiveness and ethics of his aggressive tactics and controversial statements. The episode underscores the ongoing debate surrounding Watson's conservation methods and the diverse opinions within the conservation community regarding his contributions to ocean protection. The arrest of Captain Paul Watson outside Greenland or Iceland has sparked a debate on the balance between activism, ethics, and the potential consequences of one's actions in the conservation field. Captain Watson, a prominent figure in marine conservation, has a long history of aggressive activism through organizations like Greenpeace and Sea Shepherd. His methods, including confrontational tactics and direct action, have garnered both support and criticism. Captain Watson's arrest brings to light the question of whether the ends justify the means in conservation activism. While he has been successful in raising awareness and effecting change in some instances, his approach has also alienated and angered many, including governments and indigenous communities. The episode highlights how his actions, while driven by a passion for protecting the ocean, have led to legal troubles and strained relationships with various stakeholders. The episode delves into the complexities of activism and the ethical considerations that come into play. Captain Watson's confrontational tactics, such as disrupting whaling operations and targeting illegal fishing vessels, have been effective in some cases but have also raised ethical concerns. His controversial statements and actions have polarized opinions within the conservation community, with some viewing him as a hero and others as a problematic figure. The arrest of Captain Paul Watson serves as a reminder of the potential consequences of activism and the importance of considering the ethical implications of one's actions. It prompts reflection on the balance between passion for conservation and the methods used to achieve conservation goals. The episode encourages listeners to engage in a dialogue about the complexities of activism, ethics, and the impact of one's actions in the conservation field.

Editors - Yvette M. Amirian, ACE and Matt Friedman, ACE When it comes to learning editing in film school, who better to learn from than ACE editors? When they aren't in the cutting rooms themselves, editors Yvette M. Amirian, ACE and Matt Friedman, ACE are in the classrooms of two of the most prestigious film schools in the world. Yvette has returned to the institution where she received her own filmmaking education, USC, to help inform the next generation as to what they need to know about the craft, as well as the career, of editing. At the American Film Institute, Matt asks his grad students to consider more than just how to put a story together, but to question why something works or something doesn't; never letting them forget that every frame matters. Yvette M. Amirian, ACE Yvette M. Amirian, ACE is an award-nominated film and television editor. After graduating from the University of Southern California's (USC) School of Cinema-Television, she built a successful career and has been transitioning seamlessly between editing scripted and documentary content for the better part of two decades. In 2011, she and her team received an Eddie Award nomination from the American Cinema Editors (ACE) for their work on Animal Planet's Whale Wars. In 2017, she edited and produced John Singleton's L.A. Burning: The Riots 25 Years Later for A&E, which was nominated for a Primetime Emmy (Outstanding Documentary Special). Her most recent project is an upcoming scripted feature for critically acclaimed filmmaker Robert Machoian, The Integrity of Joseph Chambers. Yvette is a proud member of the Motion Picture Editor's Guild, the Academy of TV Arts & Sciences, and ACE. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband and two sons. Matt Friedman, ACE Matt won the 2021 ACE Eddie for Best Edited Feature Film (Comedy) for Palm Springs, and was nominated in 2020 for "The Farewell". He was born in rural east Tennessee to a coal mining family living in the foothills of the Appalachians. After graduating from Oak Ridge High School with an emphasis in Extinct Ancient Languages, Matt headed for Chicago to attend Northwestern University. Due to a series of accidental registration errors, he ended up with enough credits for a degree in Economics as well as Film. None of his college film work involved blowing up model cars, however. He finished his Econ degree at the University of Queensland, in Brisbane, Australia, where he was offered AU$100 and a Sydney snow globe by a group of Australian students if he would vote for Clinton in '92 via absentee ballot. Matt then moved to a spacious two bedroom apartment in scenic North Hollywood to begin his film career in earnest. Arriving just in time for the Northridge Earthquake and the fires and mudslides of '93, he was very lucky to begin working for a series of extremely supportive and wonderful editors, including (but not limited to!) Peter Teschner, Emma Hickox, Jill Bilcock, and Sheldon Kahn. In recent years, Matt has enjoyed cutting a variety of different types of films and television pilots, including films in Spanish and Chinese, even though he doesn't speak the languages. He now lives in the Hollywood Hills with his wonderful husband Chris and their son. In our discussion with educators and editors Yvette M. When the going gets tough the activists get tougher. Our oceans are in distress as we continue to overfish marine ecosystems around the world. 90% of whales, 85-99% of shark species, trillions of fish, and countless other ocean animals have been lost due to overfishing, much of which operates outside of the law. Illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing is a major enabler of the exploitation of our oceans but the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is standing in the way. Literally. By using direct action techniques and what founder, Captain Paul Watson, calls “aggressive nonviolence”, Sea Shepherd crews document and disrupt illegal fishing and whaling on the open water. Featured on the popular TV series, “Whale Wars”, and in documentaries like Seaspiracy on Netflix, Sea Shepherd ships send illegal fishing boats running as they attempt to cover up their destruction of wildlife ecosystems and human rights violations. Tune in to learn more about the crucial work Sea Shepherd is doing to protect our oceans, which also means protecting our planet, and how you can get involved today.SUPPORT Sea Shepherd: Learn more , volunteer, donate, and get involved at https://seashepherd.org/.CHALLENGE: The Earth Warrior challenge. Make a choice to alter your habits or behaviors in a way that benefits the Earth. If you eat seafood, or animal products of any kind, you can choose to remove them from your diet completely, or partially if you need a transition period. Replace disposables with reusables for good. If you have the choice between car, train, bus, or plane, choose train or bus – or bike. Or build volunteering with an Earth-focused organization into your routine. Featured on the popular TV series, “Whale Wars”, and in documentaries like Seaspiracy on Netflix, Sea Shepherd ships send illegal fishing boats running as they attempt to cover up their destruction of wildlife ecosystems and human rights violations. Tune in to learn more about the crucial work Sea Shepherd is doing to protect our oceans, which also means protecting our planet, and how you can get involved today.SUPPORT Sea Shepherd: Learn more , volunteer, donate, and get involved at https://seashepherd.org/. CHALLENGE: The Earth Warrior challenge. Make a choice to alter your habits or behaviors in a way that benefits the Earth. If you eat seafood, or animal products of any kind, you can choose to remove them from your diet completely, or partially if you need a transition period. Replace disposables with reusables for good. Captain Paul Watson is a Canadian-American Marine Conservation Activist who founded the International Direct Action Group, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. He and Sea Shepherd became household names through Animal Planet's hit show, Whale Wars, where we got an in your face look at the murderous activities of the whaling industry. For decades Captain Watson has dedicated his life to protecting all animals, especially marine mammals, and he does not shy away from controversy. In his new book, Death of a Whale, Captain Watson faces his most personal conflict yet when he and other anti-whaling activists find themselves at odds with Native American tribal rights. Conservationists, eco-warriors, whale protectors and supporters of indigenous traditions as well as anyone who loves a good story will find themselves enthralled by his new book.FOLLOW CAPTAIN PAUL WATSON:http://www.paulwatson.com/https://www.facebook.com/captpaulwatsonhttps://www.instagram.com/captainpaulwatson/FOLLOW SEA SHEPHERD:https://www.seashepherdglobal.orgORDER CAPTAIN PAUL WATSON's BOOK DEATH OF A WHALEhttps://shop.paulwatson.com/collections/captain-paul-watson-books/products/death-of-a-whale-the-challenge-of-anti-whaling-activists-and-indigenous-rightsFOLLOW AND JUSTICE FOR ANIMALS PODCASTWebsite: www.andjusticeforanimals.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/andjusticeforanimalspodcast/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AndJusticeForAnimalsPodcast@andjusticeforanimalspodcast
BONUS Episode where we wax on apprenticeship pay, Whale Wars is explained, the awfulness of Battle of the Bods is brought to the table, and a couple dudes in their late 30s admit the futileness of truly explaining the depth of RASL to women in their 20s. Sit in the corner and eat your mush.
Our next guest had a super unique introduction into the helicopter world. You guys ever seen Whale Wars? Yeah he was that dude flying the MD500 off the back of the Sea Shepherd's vessel assisting in whale conservation efforts from the North Atlantic, Galapagos, Gulf of California, all the way down to Antarctica. After his stint with the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, he worked his way up from flight instructing in Robinsons to flying utility and firefighting in Hueys, 212s, and now is flying the infamous intermeshig K-MAX!He's here to chat about his experience with the Sea Shepherds , what its like to fly the K-MAX, utility pilot life, and we dive into the role helicopters play in environmental conservation. Stick around at the end of the episode, where we share a short ground lesson answering Susan from Instagrams question, "What do you do if you find something wrong on preflight? And are all items no fly items?" Let's talk 91.213!
“If the oceans die, we die. We all have a vested interest in making sure life in the sea is not diminished.”On this week's episode of the Eat Green Make Green Podcast I sit down with the legendary Captain Paul Watson. Captain Paul is the Founder & President of the famous Sea Shepherd, an international non-profit with a worldwide presence and a mission to protect all marine animals, widely known from the hit show Whale Wars on Animal Planet and most recently featured in the Netflix documentary Seaspiracy. We talk about how an experience as a child led him toward protecting wildlife, why he founded Sea Shepherd, why Sea Shepherd takes an aggressive approach to protecting the seas, the immense damage of commercial fishing, the wild west nature of the seas despite existing laws, why there is no sustainable commercial fishing operation anywhere in the world, the power of film and media for Sea Shepherd over the years, what projects Sea Shepherd is currently working on around the globe, the power of focusing on what we can do in the present moment, what we can do individually to help the oceans, why nothing gets accomplished without risk, and why if the oceans die we die.Show NotesSea Shepherd WebsiteSea Shepherd InstagramCaptain Paul's Instagram

With work in the entertainment industry slowly beginning to trickle in and productions ramping up over the coming weeks and months, you’d think we could all just “go back to normal,” right? WRONG. The new version of post-pandemic work is going to be anything but normal (and frankly Normal. Wasn’t. Working), and for one very specific group, this is uncharted (and terrifying) territory: Parents. In the latest ‘Optimizer’ community Q&A, our community welcomes four hardworking moms in various stages of their careers in the entertainment industry. Editor Yvette Amirian (ACE), Editor Natalie Boschan, Editor/AE Monica Daniel, and Assistant Editor Bari Winter have all been simultaneously juggling busy careers while also doing their best to raise children during a global pandemic. We talk about how we can balance the vast needs of Hollywood production while still doing our best to be present parents. We discuss tips and strategies for handling this delicate balancing act. My guests also share their fears and hopes about navigating pre-pandemic expectations in a post-pandemic working world. In this very candid conversation, we cover many topics including: How can we balance the vast needs of Hollywood production and post-production when we’re still homeschooling our kids, daycare isn’t open, or we can’t afford a nanny anymore? Will working from home mean that we NEVER get any time away from the office to be a parent because of endless emails and texts where people need things 24/7? Will people be less likely to hire me again if I’m a parent working from home? From a young age, Kate had a passion for the oceans and this was only deepened when Kate moved to Melbourne in 2014 where she joined Sea Shepherd, an international, marine focussed environmental group with a mission to Defend, Conserve and Protect our oceans. Kate joined Sea Shepherd because she was passionate about preserving our planet and felt she could no longer be a bystander, anxious about threats to marine habitats. Starting off as an onshore volunteer; Kate spent her time fundraising for the organisation and promoting marine conservation in her spare time. She then signed up to crew on board the Sea Shepherd vessels and has since taken part in 6 campaigns off shore, starting with an Antarctica campaign to oppose Japanese whaling and most recently has been concentrating her efforts on defending the world’s most endangered marine mammal, the Vaquita Porpoise, from becoming extinct in Mexico.Kate also decided she wanted to fundraise for this cause, managing to raise just under $7000 that was spent directly towards keeping the ships at sea and the crews fed and safe Mexico. Kate wanted to raise awareness for the plight of this animal and along with another Sea Shepherd crew member they did just that, by walking 400km in 20 days down the west coast of the USA, along the Pacific Crest Trail in January of this year. Sadly due to COVID these vessels are no longer able to patrol the area and for the few remaining Vaquita (estimated between 6-19) things are looking increasingly desperate.Mentions:Sea Shepherd - https://www.seashepherd.org.au/Whale Wars (series) - https://www.animalplanet.com/tv-shows/whale-wars/Animal Planet - https://www.animalplanet.com/Cowspiracy (film) - https://www.cowspiracy.com/The Cove (film) - https://www.opsociety.org/our-work/films/the-cove/Blackfish (film) - http://www.blackfishmovie.com/Sea of Shadows (film)- https://films.nationalgeographic.com/sea-of-shadows?fbclid=IwAR3aUzAFV2MhDcVxwCrJUp2tz4HGlDkcafM0ZJHJnQz5OIkEejDEyzrmcrsWild (movie) - https://www.searchlightpictures.com/wild/Racing Extinction (documentary) - https://racingextinction.com/Feral - George Monbiot (book) - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feral_(Monbiot_book)Lamave - https://www.lamave.org/Hero Round Table - http://heroroundtable.com/

Sea Shepherd Captain Paul Watson Today we are beyond excited to welcome Captain Paul Watson, founder of Sea Shepherd Conservancy. You may already be familiar with him from the hit TV show “Whale Wars”. Sea Shepherd uses direct action to defend marine wildlife and protect their habitat in the world’s oceans. Sea Shepherd has transformed into an international movement and exists in 40 different countries, all concentrating on different environmental initiatives. Captain Paul Watson believes in an interventionist approach, where they directly shut down the terrible things that are happening in our oceans. Sea Shepherd has successfully driven the Japanese whaling fleet out of the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary, shut down the toothfish poachers in the waters around Antarctica, stopped Chevron and BP from drilling in the Australian bite, and so much more. With poachers, illegal fishing, overfishing, and the diminishment of biodiversity within our ecosystem, they are ultimately fighting against the death of our ocean. Sea Shepherd wants to remind you that one person can make a real difference. We all have the ability to change the world - all it takes is passion, imagination and courage. The oceans are our lifeline, yet they are dying more and more everyday and desperately need our help. Please contribute in the best way you can to help defend and protect marine wildlife and the world’s oceans. How can you help? Donate Join a campaign Volunteer in your hometown Keep our shores clean Please don’t forget to share this episode! Do I have an episode for you to sink your teeth into! My guest is both loved and feared by many all over the world for his 40 plus years of marine animal and ocean conservation activism.Captain Paul Watson, esteemed Founder and President of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society has starred in seven seasons of Animal Planet’s television series Whale Wars, and he has received many awards and commendations over the years for his conservation and animal rights activism - including from the Dalai Lama. Sea Shepherd, which Captain Paul founded in 1977, does so much in service of our seas, such as removing killer nets, conducting vital marine research, cleaning beaches, patrolling waters, as well as taking aggressive nonviolent action against anyone threatening the fragile balance of our ocean’s ecosystems.Hundreds of thousands of marine animals – some of them already endangered – are targeted and trapped by poachers each year. The sustainability of the planet is at risk, too. With so much at stake, Sea Shepherd is unrelenting in protecting the seas and stopping those who destroy habitats and marine life.In this interview with Captain Paul, we talk about:Why he decided to part ways with Greenpeace (which he co-founded) and set up an interventionist organization to go after poachers in our oceansHow he landed the show Whale Wars on cable television, which ran from 2008-2015 - and you’ll be amazed to hear the incredible and historic victory for whales as a result of thatThe truth about sustainably sourced, wild-caught, dolphin safe fish, and whether or not farmed fish is a better alternativeAnd we also get to hear about the politics of species extinction, the media's response to Paul’s aggressive tactics as an activist, and his firsthand experience seeing the demand for vegan food around the world today. And, if you get jazzed and want to join the Sea Shepherd movement and support this heroic cause, he gives us a glimpse into volunteer life, too!Website: seashepherd.org/FB: facebook.com/SeaShepherdConservationSociety/IG: instagram.com/seashepherdsscs/Twitter: twitter.com/SeaShepherdSSCSRequest to join our community of rebels at www.eatinglikeyougiveadamn.com/group for recipes and support. If you like what you hear, don't forget to: SUBSCRIBELeave a great REVIEWSnap a PHOTO while listening to the show and tag @eatinglikeyougiveadamn on Instagram and FacebookVeg On, Rebels.

Leading a global movement to protect the world's oceans is no easy task but Captain Paul Watson has been doing it for 40 years. As a founding member of Greenpeace, Paul Watson has been an environmental activist from his earliest days. Watson went on to found SEA SHEPHERD and his work with Sea Shepherd is documented in the show Whale Wars in which Watson hunts down and attempts to stop illegal poaching of whales around the world. The brutal struggle to stop those illegal activities takes the Sea Shepherd crew into some of the most intense climates and conditions imaginable. After virtually shutting down illegal Japanese whale hunts, the Japanese government fabricated charges against him to the point that Watson had to remain at sea for over a year to avoid extradition. He still has to move around the world cautiously because of that warrant. His work to protect the ocean from illegal fishing and pollution that destroys habitats around the globe continues every day and has continues to make on new forms and faces. The show begins even before Captain Paul Watson arrives with Heather Ankeny and J. Elvis Weinstein having a post-superbowl conversation which includes Heather walking us through a decadent Super Bowl party. The first 20 minutes of the show is our conversation with our regular crew of Heather, Josh and Mark and then Captain Paul Watson joins and J. Elvis is traded out for Chris Little from iHeart Radio.

db70178fca94980bf7354d4e08a0c93e.jpgThis episode starts out with a debate and deconstruction of IDW Publishing's "Sins of the Wreckers" number two, with the crew breaking down the content of the issue and offering their opinions on the plot, and its potential for advancement, thus far. The show then moves on to some day dreaming about the tenth anniversary of the Transformers Beast Wars franchise, describing in detail what they'd like to see from this upcoming yearlong event. A fascinating listener question then follows regarding Decepticon faction symbols and their orientation. This leads in to a special discussion about the original Transformers "Generation One" and its place in today's fan community. The show then puts a final definitive cap on 2015, including the holiday season and gifts given to others. A look ahead on hopes for the Transformers brand in 2016 caps off a fun show.

The Graphic Novice Comic Book Podcast returns for at least one more episode as Nickel, VF, & Snow lay down another 2 hours down on tape. Almost 3 weeks of life have passed since episode 69, and the guys catch up before moving on to discuss all the comics they haven’t read. Nickel recalls an encounter with Canadian Reggae Sensation and friend of the show, Snow, and man of adventure, VF, recalls a day in the Escape room, but only after complaining about Episode 69.1. Mix in a debate about twitter, some brief discussions about going to the movies, drinking habits, Whale Wars, plans for Rose City Comiccon, and a discussion of Neil's reaction to "The Slut Whisperer", and you've got about an hour of non-comic related banter to start out this episode of the Graphic Novice Comic Book Podcast before the subject matter gets back to comics. In "Comic News", the guys discuss friend of the show, Nate's, Tupperware full of '90's comics, and some of the gold that Nickel was gifted out of said Tupperware full of 90's comics. For the "Rapid-Fire Review" segment, we review some of the comics released way back on August 5 & August 12, 2015, including Detective Comics #43, Deadly Class #15, We Stand On Guard #2, Amazing Spider-Man Renew Your Vows #3, Broken World #3, Batman #43 (first appearance of Mr. Bloom), Earth 2 Society #3, Starve #3, and Secret Wars #5. Next Episode we'll get caught up with the reviews, and hopefully, we'll both have read a few more of the books that we purchased. Thanks so taking the time to check us out. Your listener appreciation gift bags will be mailed out soon.
