Huntlore is a podcast where we will spark your imagination through the retelling of hunting adventures and stories.
For episode 15 I talk to Kevin Bustard from British Columbia. Kevin is married to his wife Anna and they have 5 children. They take their children on every hunting trip, which is really amazing considering their ages range from 1 to 10 years old. They are consciously and deliberately raising their children in an environment that encourages independence and responsibility. The Bustard family relies on their hunting experiences and the wild meat from those adventures to sustain their bodies and minds. I really enjoyed listening to Kevin's perspective on hunting and family. You might be shocked when you hear some of these stories, but you also have to admire the sense of adventure they are instilling in their children.
I talk with Lex Strauss. He is a professional hunter in South Africa where he operates Lex Strauss Safaris. When you hear Lex talk about hunting it is clear that he has a deep passion for the hunt.
My good friend Ryan Derlago (Stickflingers) joined me to reminisce about his first deer harvest and then his first Pope and Young buck. We then discuss whitetail hunting, the use of trail cams and the bigwoods. Good luck to everyone this deer season!
My guest today is Bill Thompson from Spartan Forge. He shares his earliest hunting memories. We then talk bigwoods whitetail hunting and his company Spartan Forge. If you are a whitetail hunter you need the Spartan Forge app in your life! Go to www.spartanforge.ai for all the details.
My guest today is Jake Jefferson. He is the owner operator of Black River Hunting Camps in Alaska. Jake grew up in Alaska after his family relocated from Michigan when he was just a baby. He talks about how he got into guiding and then later into outfitting. He shares how he was scared of bears, but now it's his number one animal to pursue! Jake has a wholesome approach and perspective when it comes to hunting and guiding. So, sit back, listen and enjoy!
I talk with my good hunting buddies Greg Vachon aka “Focker” and Jason Courchaine. I've been hunting bears with Jason since 2011. He's a local Manitoba bowhunting legend, at least in my opinion. He's killed numerous record book animals which include deer, bear, elk and moose. He has a common sense approach to bowhunting, which has contributed to his success. Jason and Focker are long-time co-workers and friends. They are both male nurses, hence the nickname “Focker” and you'll understand that if you've ever watched “Meet the Parents.” Jason introduced Focker to hunting. The cool thing about Focker is that he only hunts elk and moose. Generally people start with small game or deer hunting then work their way up to the big game, not Focker, his first hunt was a fly-in moose hunt or what he calls a fly-away. Our conversation is as candid as they get, we just finished shooting our bows and decided to sit down for a talk about our past moose and elk hunts. We share a lot of laughs reminiscing about these past hunts. We also discuss our upcoming moose hunt, which is only in a couple weeks. I think you'll enjoy the candidness and sincerity of our conversation. Enjoy!
Welcome to episode 9 of the Huntlore Podcast. My guest today is Lou Phillippe. He has bowhunted big game in the US, Canada, and Australia for 52 years, he also occasionally rifle hunts. His specialties are elk and plains mule deer, especially calling and decoying mature mule deer bucks. Lou has written dozens of feature articles in all the major bowhunting magazines. He has also given seminars and banquet speeches to bowhunting clubs. Lou lives in the mountains of northern Colorado with his wife and yellow lab pup. He shares stories of the good old days when you could call in a bull elk with a gas can nozzle. Sit back, listen and enjoy!
Mike Davenport was raised by a single mother, as his dad was in and out of jail. He talks about how hunting and his mentors helped keep him out of trouble. He has since become a very successful hunter taking 5 whitetail bucks over 170 inches. He tells a story about how he took a Booner sitting on a bucket.
Any hardcore Manitoba bowhunter has heard the name Ryan Derlago, and if you haven't you probably should listen to this episode. In the Manitoba bowhunting community Ryan is regarded as one of the best bowhunters. His ability to read sign is uncanny, and blood trailing is second to none. Ryan was born into a bowhunting family. His dad was one of the first, if not the first, to bowhunt bears over bait in Manitoba. Ryan tells the story of his first bear kill, and his biggest moose to date. So, sit back, relax and enjoy the conversation.
My 15 year-old son, Noah, joins me to finish off our 2 part series. We reminisce about his elk hunt and the crazy lady that almost ran me over. We go over his solo deer hunts and the lesson he learned while bear hunting.
Before settling down in Iowa to raise is growing family Dave Reimer experienced a few lifetimes of adventures in the Alaskan Interior living and teaching in a remote village. He pursued brown bear, moose and black bear. He also immersed himself in the local culture and was rewarded in being invited to partake in a “Bear Party” with the elders. Dave also talks about his film company ‘Locals Films' and the projects he is working on. Enjoy!
