What if a classic tale could be reshaped with modern twists and turns that leave you questioning everything you thought you knew? Join me, Kyle McMahon, as I sit down with visionary director Nia Da Costa (The Marvels, 28 Days Later: The Bone Temple), superstar Tessa Thompson (The Avengers: Endgame, Creed) Nina Hoss and Tom Bateman to explore how the new Prime Video film 'Hedda' reimagines Henrik Ibsen's iconic play with electrifying creativity. Unearth how Nia DaCosta's visionary adaptation amplifies the timeless stakes of 'Hedda Gabler,' with Tessa Thompson breathing new life into the titular character. With Nina Hoss portraying a gender-swapped Eileen Loveborg and Tom Bateman tackling the complexities of George Tessman, this episode promises a deep dive into the innovative storytelling that challenges societal norms and character dynamics. Nina opens up about the liberating challenge of stepping into a reimagined role, enriching the narrative with existential undertones that speak volumes about contemporary issues. Meanwhile, Tom reflects on George Tessman's internal battle with power and understanding, shedding light on his character's tumultuous relationship with Hedda. Get ready for a thought-provoking conversation that not only celebrates the daring vision behind this adaptation but also offers a fresh perspective on a literary classic that continues to resonate. Tune in for an insider's look at 'Hedda,' where tradition meets transformation and storytelling reaches new heights. If you dig the show, subscribe, rate, and share—and tell your mom; she and Kyle would absolutely get along.

This week, the boys head back to Roman Polanski-ville for the third time to discuss the pivotal 1965 film “Repulsion”. This “dangerous” film is Polanski's first English-language movie, shot in London during the peak of the French New Wave (Polanski is a Polish-French filmmaker). “Repulsion” offers indie-film groundedness, a gritty reality, noir-inspired neorealism, and an upheaval of social values of the time- sexual liberation, classism, irony, and iconoclasm. Also, we all had different levels of enjoyment, which led to one of our finest broad conversations! Grab a beer and listen along. linktr.ee/theloveofcinema - Check out our YouTube page! Don't be shy, send me a message!Thomas Felix Creighton interviews the CEO of Shogun Films, Jonathan Sothcott.https://www.shogunfilms.com/Jonathan Sothcott is one of the UK's most experienced and successful independent producers with a track record of success with high concept, low budget genre films. Described by GQ Magazine as "a film producer behind a whole new generation of on-screen hardmen", a 2021 Sothcott profile piece in The Telegraph noted his movies "have saved our film industry."Over the years Sothcott has worked with a galaxy of stars including Ray Winstone, Danny Trejo, Lee Majors, Mark Hamill, Jason Statham, Michael Paré, Steven Berkoff, Richard E Grant, Charlie Cox and Sir Roger Moore.Notable successes amongst his 40+ feature credits include ‘Vendetta', ‘We Still Kill The Old Way' and ‘Renegades'. Despite only lasting four short years from 1930 to 1934, the pre-code era of Hollywood’s Golden Age produced films that pushed the boundaries of cinema and storytelling, even by today’s standards. Hollywood classics including King Kong (1933), Freaks (1932), and Grand Hotel (1932) all came out during this time, just before the enforcement of the Production Code in 1934. Films of the pre-code era explored themes of sexuality, outlaws, racial identity, and class disparity. In a new book released in partnership with Turner Classic Movies, film historians and creators of Pre-Code.com, share their 50 must-see movies from the pre-code era. Joining us on FilmWeek to discuss some of the best films of the early 1930s, is Kim Luperi, film historian and co-author of the book Pre-Code Essentials: Must-See Cinema from Hollywood’s Untamed Era (1930-1934). Kim Luperi will be at Book Soup in West Hollywood Sunday, November 2 for a book signing event. You can get more information about the event here. The Curse of Frankenstein (1957), The Revenge of Frankenstein (1958), and The Evil of Frankenstein (1964) What can you say about the Hammer Frankenstein films that hasn't been said before? Well, a lot, actually! In 1957, a relatively small, mostly unknown studio made a film that would forever change horror and kick off a cycle of sensual, bloody, and atmospheric fright flicks that would dominate the genre for around twenty years. To say that The Curse of Frankenstein is a classic is almost like saying that water is wet, but it is also a film that lives up to it's reputation. It and its sequels are films that not only deserve regular revisits, they also belong in more modern conversations about horror. While nearly all the films shard crewmembers and all but one were directed by Terence Fisher, one constant defined the series: Peter Cushing's mesmerizing take on Victor Frankenstein, equal parts gentleman and ghoul. On this episode we look at the first three films in the Cushing Frankenstein cycle, and in a very real way, make a pilgrimage to one of horror's holy places. We love these films and we hope that either you do too, or that you will by the time you are done listening. Films mentioned in this episode: The Bride of Frankenstein (1935), Corruption (1968), The Curse of Frankenstein (1957), The Devil-Ship Pirates 1964), Dracula vs Frankenstein (1971), The Evil of Frankenstein (1964), Frankenstein (1931), Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed (1969), Maniac (1963), Nightmare (1964), Paranoiac (1963), The Quatermass Xperiment (1955), Re-Animator (1985), The Revenge of Frankenstein (1958)
To kick off the latest cycle of "Unorthodox Holiday Suggestions", Emilio brings the original 'Black Christmas', Bob Clark's other holiday themed masterpiece from 1974, to the group just in time for spooky season. Joining the usual three cohosts is James Codoyannis, fellow cinephile and editor for film/TV who worked on the well-received, recently released indie film "We Strangers". The group digs into this proto-slasher classic, highlighting the way this movie is in such great control of its tone and atmosphere, the changing nature of the POV shots, at iconic atonal piano sound design/score, the amazing voice acting work by Nick Mancuso as Billy, and much more. The group also discusses the many ways 'Black Christmas' intersects with and diverges from John Carpenter's 'Halloween', the much more popular and influential slasher film from the 1970s, and discusses the filmmaking decisions that implicate Peter as the killer, and whether or not it works for building suspense. It's a great conversation about what makes 'Black Christmas' such a important entry in the horror canon!Follow James on his socials:INSTAGRAM: @codboyannisLETTERBOXD: jcodoyannisBLUESKY: @codboyannis.bsky.socialWE STRANGERS now available on rent & buy at AMAZON, APPLE TV, and other placesFollow @westrangersthefilm on INSTAGRAMSEAWEED STORIES now available to watch on Leo DiCaprio's YouTube ChannelIf you enjoy our podcast, please rate and review us on your podcast platform of choice. Send us a textWelcome back to DMR!Jurassic World: Rebirth is a visually impressive but narratively uneven return to the dinosaur blockbuster formula. Critics praise its thrilling set pieces, polished effects, and renewed focus on the prehistoric stars that made the franchise iconic. It's a big, loud, entertaining ride that captures some of the old magic, and for audiences simply craving dino mayhem, it largely delivers. The cast is solid, the action sequences are well-executed, and it feels more respectful of the original Jurassic Park tone than some recent installments. But the story itself doesn't quite evolve — it's weighed down by thin characters, predictable plotting, and a few unnecessary subplots. Many reviewers describe it as fun but forgettable, a movie that entertains in the moment yet doesn't leave a lasting impact. That's why it sits at around 50% on Rotten Tomatoes: half the critics enjoyed the spectacle, while the other half felt the franchise is stuck in the past. In short, Rebirth roars but doesn't soar!Remember to grab your 30 day free Audible trial, link is in the show, you will also support DMR!Support the showThe audio clips used in this podcast, including excerpts from movie/series/documentary trailers, are used under the principles of fair use and fair dealing for the purpose of criticism, commentary, and review. That included a slew of romantic comedies with modest budgets, but which became box-office smashes thanks to their novel concepts, sparkling scripts, and charismatic leads. 8. Later Films and the Importance of Sid Scott Eyman Charlie Chaplin versus America: When Art, Sex, and Politics Collided Chaplin's first European film, A King in New York (1957), suffered as he struggled with English union rules, highlighting his dependence on absolute creative autonomy. His final film, A Countess from Hong Kong (1967), was hampered by the casting of Marlon Brando, insisted upon by Universal. Brando proved mechanical and unsuited for the film's romantic rescue plot. Ultimately, Chaplin's half-brother, Sid, remained the indispensable cornerstone of his life, always ready to help or rescue him. 1936
