In this episode, I talk about my three favorite films regarding Abraham Lincoln to support "President's Day'. They are from 1939 "Young, Mr. Lincoln, 140 Abe Lincoln in Illinois and from 2012 Lincoln.
In this episode, we take a closer look at how modern films like Sinners and Marvel's Black Panther draw heavily from ancient and indigenous religious traditions, often positioning them as morally superior or more "authentic" than Christianity. Chuck explores the symbolism, storytelling choices and cultural messaging behind these movies and asks, what does it mean when Christianity is sidelined or reframed in popular entertainment? Is this just creative world-building, or does it reflect a deeper shift in spiritual values being promoted on screen?

In this episode of Missing Frames, Shawn and Sarah celebrate the legacy of legendary actress Catherine O'Hara by revisiting Christopher Guest's mockumentary comedy A Mighty Wind (2003). The conversation dives into the film's folk music setting, the emotional core of Mitch and Mickey's relationship, and the unique collaborative process behind Guest's improvisation-driven filmmaking. Along the way, Shawn and Sarah reflect on Catherine O'Hara's career, her chemistry with Eugene Levy, and how the film balances comedy, nostalgia, and genuine emotional resonance. On this episode of the Visual Intonation Podcast, filmmaker Shana L. Darabie joins the mic with a voice shaped by image, genre, and deep interior listening. Born in Long Beach, California and based in Brooklyn, Shana traces a path from fashion design to film, from texture and silhouette to shadow and story. Her early training at the Fashion Institute of Technology sharpened her eye. Her later studies at Brooklyn College gave language to the images she could already see. Shana speaks plainly about process. About doubt. About the courage it takes to be vulnerable on the page. She reflects on how a single class project unlocked her desire to direct, how long treatments can sit before a script finally arrives, fast and fully formed. Science fiction and horror are not escapes for her. They are tools. Ways to explore fear, identity, and the systems that press on the mind. Films like The Trail, What Happened to Candice, and Trouble Connecting reveal a filmmaker committed to atmosphere and emotional truth. In conversation with host, the dialogue widens. Mental health moves to the center. Not as an abstraction, but as lived reality. They discuss how cinema has portrayed mental illness with care or cruelty, how poverty and access shape outcomes, and why compassionate storytelling matters. Shana opens up about her short Canary Trap, community support, and the quiet power of creative connection, whether formed in a writers room or over Zoom. The episode closes with reflection and recommendation. Films that linger. Films that listen. Shana shares titles that have shaped her way of seeing, including Tully, The Snake Pit, Young Adult, Welcome to Me, Perfect Blue paired with Millennium Actress, and Year of the Dog. It is a conversation about making work that resonates personally. About art as self care. About staying rooted while reaching toward the unknown. Shana L. Before SURVIVOR was popular, people in the 1920's would find themselves on an isolated, inhospitable island, driven by survival and searching for that one piece of personal peace and salvation.Ron Howard's EDEN kinda does that with a bunch of sexy actors enacting the true story of a group of people setting up life in the Galapagos Islands. What ensues is a pinch of madness. A crumble of humanity and plenty of foul behavior.Depending on who you speak to, this is either "not bad" or "straight down the middle". That equates to a whole bunch of mediocrity. But it's coming out near Valentine's so, all is forgiven!

A film that begins with a meet-cringe and ends with mis-apportioned blame. Leap Year Year: 2010 Written by: Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont Directed by: Anand Tucker Stars: Amy Adams, Matthew Goode Show notes: Happy 5th anniversary to us!!! In this year that is not a leap year please allow us to propose a film about proposals that also did not come out in a leap year. If you would like to skip the plot summary for this month's film you can spool forward about 13 minutes into the episode. In this episode we mention the films: Saving Face* (2004) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0384504/) Holidate* (2020) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9866072/) Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109831/) Overboard (1987) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093693/) Plus One* (2019) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7645122/) *Films marked with an asterisk have previously been featured on the podcast. According to the article about it on Wikipedia, the leap year proposal tradition referenced in this film "is an Irish tradition by which women are allowed to propose to men on Leap Day, 29 February, based on a legend of Saint Bridget and Saint Patrick. It once had legal basis in Scotland and England." The Wikipedia article (accessed February 2026) is here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bachelor%27s_Day_(tradition) If you would like to suggest films for future episodes, you can tweet Lisa: @LisaStowaway. For episode 278, I'm joined once again by my co-host Myles Hughes, with producer Steve Prusakowski working behind the scenes. This episode comes before Valentine's Day this weekend, so we're talking romantic comedies, romance on screen, and more. Some of it ties into the impending release of Wuthering Heights (reviewed here). With Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie hitting theaters (my rave review is here) as well, we also end up dovetailing that into a discussion of the Back to the Future trilogy for...reasons. Throw in a discussion about Gore Verbinski (my interview with him is right here), your questions, a rom-com game, and more, and despite recovering from a cold, we still pack plenty into this episode...As always my friends and faithful listeners/readers, I do hope you all enjoy the latest episode of the Awards Radar Podcast, our 278th one to date (here's to many more). Of course, feel free to revisit the previous installments by clicking the Podcast tab (here) on the top of the page. Plus, listen to us on Apple Podcasts (iTunes), Spotify, and other platforms. More to come each and every single week, so from the bottom of my heart, thank you for listening!

Welcome back to Is It Worth It?, the show where we break down the newest movies, shows, and reimaginings to help you decide what's worth your time and money. Today, J. Logan Austin dives into one of 2025's most talked-about releases: The Running Man (2025), the bold new adaptation of Stephen King's dystopian action adventure. In this review, we cover:
Gabby Osio Vanden and Jack Weisman join the show after winning Sundance's Grand Jury Prize to unpack the ten-year road behind Nuisance Bear, a polar bear's journey through two connected worlds: tourist-heavy Churchill, Manitoba, and the Inuit community of Arviat, where the stakes are far more complex and far less welcoming. The film becomes a meditation on coexistence, control, and who gets labeled a “nuisance” in a shared landscape. We dig into craft and access: finding the right position for the camera so the story can reveal itself, structuring the feature in two halves, and how a dialogue-free short film born partly out of COVID constraints became the proof of concept that unlocked TIFF, The New Yorker, and eventually A24. They also talk candidly about what the audience never sees: rough living conditions, long hours waiting, the specific agony of “the best thing happened, and we missed it,” and the slow but important work of earning trust, where listening comes before filming. They share influences that shaped them, including Miyazaki's sense of nature and modernity, Gus Van Sant's bravery with form, and John Cassavetes' belief in the energy of a set. The conversation closes on what it meant to experience Sundance as both a career peak and a personal milestone, getting engaged and then married during the festival. Advice to filmmakers: be tenacious when you know you need to tell a story, protect trust like it is part of the craft, and do not turn on each other when the pressure spikes. What Movies Are You Watching? This episode is brought to you by BeastGrip. There's a particular kind of confidence required to make a modern Los Angeles heist movie without flinching at the shadow of “Heat.” It's the cinematic elephant in the room, the reference point that inevitably looms over any story involving meticulous thieves, dogged cops, and asphalt‑level tension. With “Crime 101,” filmmaker Bart Layton acknowledges that lineage without trying to wrestle it. Instead, he builds something adjacent: a grounded, contemporary crime film that uses the genre as a delivery system for deeper questions about identity, status, and obsession.Based on the novella by Don Winslow, “Crime 101” follows a precise, disciplined jewel thief (played by Chris Hemsworth) whose carefully calibrated life begins to fracture as an obsessive LAPD detective (played by Mark Ruffalo) closes in. Sound familiar "Heat" fans? Luckily, we also have other stories running parallel, like Halle Berry as Sharon, a woman boxed in by institutional disrespect and professional diminishment, slowly realizing that the systems she has played by were never designed to reward her. The ensemble is stacked with Barry Keoghan, Monica Barbaro, Corey Hawkins, Nick Nolte, and more, but the film's real engine is tone: tense, patient, and uninterested in clean moral answers.READ MORE: ‘Nirvanna The Band The Show The Movie': Matt Johnson & Jay McCarrol On Time Travel, Friendship, The Show's 3rd Season, & Filming Without Permits [The Discourse Podcast]Joining The Discourse for two separate interviews, Layton, Hemsworth, and Berry dug into how “Crime 101” consciously avoids Hollywood shorthand while still delivering a propulsive, white‑knuckle ride.
