Welcome to Multiverse News, your source for information about all your favorite fictional universes.Everyone's forgotten Peter Parker…or have they? Sony gave us a second full trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day and the interwebs are buzzing about it. We get longer looks at Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner/Hulk and Jon Bernthal's Frank Castle/Punisher in the film, as well as allusions to the big bad of the movie - though Tom Holland recently said on the press tour that the antagonist has not been figured out yet by fans. Films continue to top each other's openings at the box office this year, with Toy Story 5 having the current title of best opening of the year to the tune of $160 million domestically over the Father's Day weekend. This was also the all-time best opening for the 30-year-old franchise. Disclosure Day took second place this weekend, though Toy Story practically beat its global take in the states alone, and Obsession and Backrooms continue their strong streaks coming in at third and fourth respectively.Universal and Blumhouse's Atomic Monster are jumping on the Curry Barker bandwagon having acquired the young director's third film in a reported eight figure deal. While Universal has been backing Barker, both Obsession and his upcoming film Anything But Ghosts are coming from Focus Features. Blumhouse has produced those same films, but this new move puts the horror powerhouse in a stronger position for film development. To tag onto the box office talk and remind you, Obsession was made for $750,000 and has now made more than $300 million worldwide - making it a tantalizing prospect for Blumhouse.Netflix has opted not to proceed with a second season of The Boroughs, a sci-fi TV series executive produced by Stranger Things creators The Duffer Brothers. When “Jaws” hit theatres in 1975, no one—neither the studio executives involved nor the film's twenty-six-year-old director, Steven Spielberg—was betting on its success. But it dominated at the box office and promptly revolutionized the way movies were promoted, distributed, and merchandised. On this episode of Critics at Large, Vinson Cunningham, Naomi Fry, and Alexandra Schwartz trace how Spielberg inaugurated a new phenomenon in Hollywood: the blockbuster. He would tap his own playbook again and again with such hits as “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” “E.T.,” and “Jurassic Park,” all of which drew impressive audiences and profits. The hosts talk through his filmography, culminating in his new release, “Disclosure Day,” which both replicates and iterates on themes and techniques found in his earlier work. Though other directors may share his capacity for spectacle and action-packed set pieces, much of his appeal lies in his profound earnestness. “What Spielberg is so good at is bringing the human to the fore in these extreme, sci-fi circumstances,” Schwartz says. “And that's what makes a great blockbuster.” New episodes of The New Yorker Radio Hour drop every Tuesday and Friday. He Could Become Anyone on Stage. What Was He Hiding Offstage?Danny Gans was the Man of Many Voices, the highest-paid headliner on the Las Vegas Strip, and the first performer to sell a $100 ticket on the Strip. He could become almost anyone on stage. Privately, he carried a pain he kept hidden. In Voices: The Danny Gans Story, his son Andrew Davies Gans sets out to tell that whole story, the legend and the man, in his directorial debut. In Episode 280, Christian Taylor sits down with director and producer Andrew Davies Gans to talk about the documentary he made about his father. Andrew shares how a baseball injury and his father's death in the same month set him on the path to filmmaking, why he chose to put himself and his family inside the frame, and how the film became a search for the truth about Danny's chronic pain and the legacy he left behind. The conversation traces a three-generation pattern of athletic dreams cut short and lives reinvented in entertainment, from Danny's father singing in the Catskills to Danny's rise from a severed Achilles to the top of the Strip. Andrew talks about comedian Louie Anderson's advice to tell the story the hard way, the Scent of a Woman speech that became one of the film's most powerful edits, and the decision to show his father's chronic pain honestly rather than hide it. It is a conversation about grief, fatherhood, and what we owe the people who came before us.In this episode, you'll learn:How Danny Gans went from a minor league baseball career to becoming the Man of Many Voices in Las VegasWhy three generations of the Gans family traded athletic dreams for lives on stageHow Danny Gans became the first performer to sell a $100 ticket on the Las Vegas StripWhat it takes to direct your first documentary about your own fatherWhy Andrew Davies Gans chose to put himself and his family inside the filmWhat comedian Louie Anderson taught Andrew about telling a story the hard wayHow the Scent of a Woman speech became one of the film's most powerful momentsWhy Andrew decided to tell the truth about his father's struggle with chronic painHow an editor earned a writing credit in the documentary edit roomWhat a three-and-a-half-hour first cut taught Andrew about finding the real filmChapters0:00 Losing his father and his baseball dream in the same month2:09 From a Major League dream to filmmaking: a son finds his father's story5:34 Three generations of dreamers: the grandfather, the Catskills, and a family that reinvents itself7:22 The White Sox draft, a severed Achilles, and Danny's rise to the Man of Many Voices10:54 Why Andrew made the film: a 10th anniversary, a teaser, and a COVID shutdown14:17 Trailer: Voices: The Danny Gans Story, the $100 ticket legend, and a word from Virgil Films18:27 Rebuilding after COVID, and becoming a father mid-production20:42 Choosing vulnerability: the decision to put himself in the film22:57 Louie Anderson and the choice to tell the story the hard way26:30 The hardest truth: the Al Pacino 'Scent of a Woman' edit, chronic pain, and one of millions35:20 First-time filmmaking lessons: why you shouldn't be 100% prepared38:16 Inside the edit room: movie magic and a writing credit for the editor41:48 The Vegas voices: Tony Orlando, Donny Osmond, and Steve Wynn48:37 What's next: narrative films, the festival run, and distribution52:37 DocuView Déjà Vu: Shuffle and Searching for Sugar ManFrequently Asked QuestionsWho was Danny Gans?Danny Gans was a singer, actor, and impressionist billed as The Man of Many Voices. He was named Las Vegas Entertainer of the Year roughly a dozen times and was the first performer to sell a $100 ticket on the Las Vegas Strip, headlining sold-out shows for years at the Mirage and the Encore at Wynn Las Vegas. A former minor league baseball player, he turned to entertainment after a career-ending injury. How did Danny Gans die?Danny Gans died on May 1, 2009, at age 52, in his sleep at his home in Henderson, Nevada. The Clark County coroner ruled the death accidental, caused by a toxic reaction to the prescription painkiller hydromorphone, which Gans took for chronic pain syndrome. Underlying heart disease and a blood disorder were contributing factors. The coroner stated clearly that this was not a case of drug abuse. What is Voices: The Danny Gans Story about?Voices: The Danny Gans Story is a documentary directed by Danny's son, Andrew Davies Gans, in his directorial debut. Fans of Batman are used to seeing the Caped Crusader associate with the likes of Superman and Wonder Woman, but what if one were to put the Dark Knight into the company of figures such as Beowulf, Robin Hood, Oedipus, and Sun Tzu, among others? Batman and the Classics: Echoes of Mythology, Literature and Philosophy in the Comics and Films (McFarland, 2026) is the first book to compare famous Batman graphic novels, story arcs, and films to classic texts of literature and philosophy from around the world. Through this comparison we can see, for instance, how the epic warrior archetype of Beowulf or Roland persists in The Dark Knight Returns, or how the metaphor of the journey, found in such works as The Odyssey, occurs in the story arc Knightfall. By placing Batman stories into conversation with such classic texts, this book sheds light on the deeper meanings of key stories of the Dark Knight, as well as how long-lasting themes of literature and philosophy have persisted in the fiction of this popular character. This week on Moviewallas, Joe, Rashmi, and Yazdi are finally back together and tackling a packed slate of movies and music documentaries. First up is Mortal Kombat 2, the latest entry in the long-running video game franchise. Does it deliver the over-the-top action fans are hoping for, or is it another missed opportunity? Next, the team discusses Pressure, a tense historical drama set around the D-Day invasion that explores the enormous responsibility placed on the meteorologists whose forecasts helped shape the course of history. Then it's time for Tuner, an intimate character-driven drama that sparks a lively discussion about performance, relationships, and the choices we make when our lives begin to drift out of tune. Finally, the hosts dive into Boy George and Culture Club, a fascinating documentary chronicling the rise, fall, and enduring legacy of one of the most distinctive bands of the 1980s.
