NBC announced Steph Curry will be part of the Ryder Cup coverage. Why? I love Steph, but do we really need to see him on the coverage of the biggest golf event in two years? Network executives drive me crazy with this stuff!
Today on the podcast I discuss social messaging in the NFL, both on helmets and on the field. Do you like it? Do you think it's a good idea? Are you bothered by it? I don't like it and I explain why. I also talk about Whoopi Goldberg criticizing HBO's Bill Maher for his comments regarding the Black National Anthem. I then talk about a phone call I had with a service provider that really surprised me.
Cleveland Browns Head Coach Kevin Stefanski announced yesterday that Odell Beckham Jr won't play this Sunday Vs the Houston Texans. Beckham is coming off a torn ACL last year and missed last week's game vs Kansas City as well. So what does Odell do? He puts out a video of him listening to a song by Drake which basically rips the coach. This guy simply doesn't get it!
Today on Listen App we had a very interesting discussion on messaging with the NFL. Social messages on helmets, Lift Every Voice and Sing have been in the news a lot lately. It was a very interesting discussion! Listen to me live weekday's at 3pm/PT on Listen App or go to Listenapp.co.
Must be nice being a professional athlete. In the case of Josh Gordon, he has been suspended 6 times, 5 for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. ESPN reported yesterday that the NFLPA has asked for Gordon to be reinstated. My question is why should he get another chance and why would a team sign him? He has let so many people down over the past eight years!
The New York Giants stink! As a fan at least I can say they look like a team. The NFL is allowing players to put six social messaging decals on helmets. The Giants were the only team that I saw that didn't have any messaging on their helmets. They don't even have Giants on the back of their helmets which is a good thing, because they look like anything but giants on the field!
ESPN has been in the news a lot lately and for all the wrong reasons. Bobby Burack from Outkick joins me to talk about their "diversity" practices. Bobby talks about the lack of white talent on ESPN'S First take show and a lot more! We also talk about social media issues in America as well!
38-3? The Green Bay Packers lose to the New Orleans Saints by that score? Plain and simple that's embarrassing! Aaron Rodgers may want to just worry about playing QB than trying to run the front office as well. Rodgers was awful throwing for only 133 yards and two interceptions. The good news is they host the Lions next Monday night!
Today's podcast was to commemorate 9-11. It really isn't appropriate to rant after talking about 9-11, but I do have some thoughts on then and now. I remember our country being very united for the most part...just the opposite of where things are now in my opinion.
Hard to believe it's been 20 years since 9-11. On today's podcast I give you my thoughts and emotions followed by my guest Bob Papa. Bob is the longtime voice of the New York Giants. The Giants played in Denver on the night of September 10th and their charter parked right next to United Flight 93 on the morning of the 11th upon their arrival. Bob gives a chilling account of what that morning and ensuing days were like. Never forget!
We finally have NFL Football to talk about. The Dallas Cowboys play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers tonight which means that fans and media will start overreacting to one game. It happens every year. Just wait until next week when "football experts" make stupid comments after one game. Enjoy the game everybody!
What's the deal with all the fights now? I see brawls in the stands at games, on planes, in airports...have people lost their minds? Is this the aftereffect of Covid and people don't know how to control themselves in public anymore? It seems to me fights are becoming more common with no regard for safety at all!
Here is episode one on Listen App. I will be doing a live show every week day beginning at 3:00 p.m. PT. Come join me. It is just like being back on the radio. There are a few audio glitches on today's show and the ending got caught off. I appreciate your patience and support while i dial this in. I hope you enjoy the show. Tell your friends and download Listen app
Notre Dame Head Coach Brain Kelly is in hot water! After Sunday's win vs Florida St Kelly was asked about holding on to a close victory. He replied "I'm in favor of execution. Maybe our entire team needs to be executed after tonight. We just didn't execute very well". Kelly had to explain it's an old John McKay quote and that he was kidding etc. Really? Doesn't everyone know he was kidding? Welcome to our new world!
We are two days away from the start of the NFL season. I break down every division, give you my picks and predict the teams to win their respective conferences. I like the Buffalo Bills and The LA Rams to make it to the Super Bowl at SoFi stadium. I also tell you how I think Covid will impact this season!
Happy Labor day! Being a holiday, no rant per se, but I want to tell you about everything going on this week. First off thank you!!!! I just hit 750 thousand downloads for my podcast! Friday's upcoming podcast will be a special one as we commemorate the 20th anniversary of 9/11. I have some special guests coming on. Tomorrow is a big day as well as I start broadcasting on Listen App. It will be very similar to my radio show where you can come on with me just like the good 'ole days! I've really missed having the interaction with the fans so this will be a great way to interact with you. The show will begin at 6pm ET/3PT Also tomorrow I will continue Tuesday and Thursday shows with Sean Salisbury at 4pm ET. Doing these shows with Sean has been a blast! Wednesday at 5PM/ET I will be on Crowd Ultra and will take calls as well! Big week coming up and again thank you!!!!
The New England Patriots didn't cut Johnny Unitas in his prime. They cut Cam Newton who hasn't played well in several years. Relax! Bill Belichick has received a lot of criticism this week over cutting Newton. The reality is rookie QB Mac Jones outplayed him! The former Alabama QB showed Belichick and the Pats that he's ready to drive the car!
Former USC and NFL QB Sean Salisbury had a lot of fun on the No Filter Network talking social media and football. Salisbury's energy and passion is a treat to listen to! The former ESPN football host talks about Cam Newton being cut by the Patriots and gives his thoughts on Matthew Stafford with the Rams. We also talk college football including Alabama and his alma mater USC. Sean and I will be on No Filter every Tuesday and Thursday at 4pm ET.
Yesterday my rant was on the Kings and Ben Simmons. Many of the comments said as long as Tyrese Haliburton isn't part of the deal. Why the heck not? You do realize Simmons has been an all-star each of the last three seasons right? You do realize Simmons was first team all defense the past two years right? Haliburton has a promising career ahead of him, but the Kings need to roll the dice in my opinion. If I had to give up Haliburton to get Simmons I'd do it in a heartbeat!
Ben Simmons has made it known he is done with the 76ers according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. The paper reported that Simmons will not attend training camp if he isn't traded. I say the Sacramento Kings should go after him. Why not? What do the Kings have to lose? They haven't made the playoffs in ages and will have a tough time making the postseason this year as things stand now. Roll the dice and go for it!
The New York Mets have been getting booed a lot by their fans for awful play. Now the Mets players led by Javier Baez are giving the Mets fans the thumbs down gesture when on the field. Team President Sandy Alderson and team owner Steve Cohen have come out publicly and said the behavior of the players is unacceptable! Ya think? You just can't make this stuff up!
Today's podcast begins with some excerpts from Phil Mushnick's story in the New York Post on Rachel Nichols and ESPN. I talk about the network's double standards and hypocrisy. I then move on to the NFL discussing the true value of turnover margin. The numbers don't lie. Protect the ball and you go to the playoffs. I also talk about offensive lines and why the New York Giants continue to be so bad. The answer is obvious! As always I answer questions from Crowd Ultra and Grant's Rant is on the embarrassing New York Mets!
Yahoo Sports is reporting the Miami Dolphins are the front runners to land Deshaun Watson. The Houston Texans QB requested a trade even before 22 women came forward alleging sexual assault and misconduct resulting in civil suits. My question is would you trade for Watson right now? Is he a better QB than Tua Tagovailoa? Yes, right now Watson is better no question. Tua's upside is huge though. That would be a big time gamble for the Dolphins if true!
Buffalo Bills wide receivers Isaiah McKenzie and Cole Beasley were fined by the NFL for violating the league's Covid-19 protocol. McKenzie actually tweeted a copy of the letter the league sent him and wrote "They got me...@NFL you win". So McKenzie who is unvaccinated was seen without his mask on several times during the day on Wednesday. Does he care about the other guys on the team, or is just about him? Beasley also went to Twitter and said " Don't worry they got me too" Do the players give a damn about the consequences of violating the league's poilicies? McKenzie and Beasley sure don't seem to care!
Charles Davis of CBS Sports makes his return to the podcast. He is truly one of my favorites. We talk about the preseason and how so many people get carried away with individual performances. Charles talks about his opening game he'll be doing with Ian Eagle, Pittsburgh at Buffalo, and shares his stories of doing games in Green Bay. It's a fun conversation with one of the best in the business.
Who the hell is making the decisions at ESPN regarding discipline for talent? Yesterday ESPN cancelled The Jump hosted by Rachel Nichols. If you don't know the Nichols story by now you've been living on Mars. What a joke ESPN has become. Stephen A. Smith can disparage the Nigerian basketball team and mock Shohei Ohtani because he uses an interpreter and nothing happens to Smith. ESPN has to be publicly admonished by NBA Commissioner for the Nichols-Maria Taylor debacle and now in August 2021 Nichols is cancelled! What a joke!!!
Can't make this stuff up...Yesterday ESPN.com had a headline that read, Is Dodgers-Padres still MLB's best rivalry? Like when has it ever been baseball's best rivalry? What a bunch of nonsense. It's not even the best rivalry in the division. Giants-Dodgers is a far superior rivalry. I'd like to meet the person who wrote that absurd headline!
New England QB Cam Newton can't practice with the team until Thursday. He went to a team approved medical appointment outside of the acceptable area as stipulated by the NFL. He has tested negative everyday for Covid, but that's not good enough. How about some common sense? How ridiculous is this?
Episode 93 starts off with my take on former tennis star and current commentator Martina Navratilova celebrating the death of a radio talk show host in Nashville by the name of Phil Valentine. I then move on to discuss the rookie quarterbacks in the NFL including Trey Lance of the San Francisco 49ers. Should he start over Jimmy Garoppolo? I say no. I also debate the MVP leader of the American League. Is it Shohei Ohtani of the Angels, or Vladimir Guerrero Jr of the Blue Jays?
Amazing to me how so many San Francisco 49ers fans think Trey Lance should start week 1. Lance is a dynamic talent no doubt....has a tremendous arm and is athletic, but he's not ready to start. Don't be fooled by the preseason. Jimmy Garoppolo is the team's best chance for winning early. Look at the Miami Dolphins last season, or the Chargers. There is no rush. Relax would you please?
The Sacramento Kings won the Las Vegas Summer League. If that excites you get a life. What should excite you is how good Davion Mitchell played. I don't know if he'll be an all star, but the 9th overall pick from Baylor sure won't be a bust like so many other draft picks over the years. Bobby Jackson who coached the squad did an excellent job, but winning the SL means nothing. Time to get ready for the real season!
I cover many things in this episode. I start off by talking about two new platforms I'll be on and how you can get involved. Then I cover the Jack Morris story. The Detroit Tigers announcer has been suspended by the team for mocking Shohei Ohtani of the Angels. Ohtani has since come out and said he wasn't offended. I also talk about apologies and how they seem to be meaningless in this country. You could make the argument things go from bad to worse when a person apologizes. Why is that? I give you my thoughts on that plus the Trevor Bauer court ruling yesterday in Los Angeles. Grant's Rant is on the Sacramento Kings winning Summer League.
It has been my experience that the sports team owner is the least knowledgeable person in the room when it comes to their sport. The same can not be said of NY Mets owner Steve Cohen. He put out a tweet ripping his team for being so undisciplined at the plate! He's right...the Mets have been awful! Maybe it was a coincidence, but after the tweet the Mets scored 6 runs in their win vs the Giants snapping a five game losing streak!
What has happened to base running in Major League Baseball? Houston Astros Manager Dusty Baker was right...the base running is as bad as it's ever been. Almost every time I turn on a game I see mistakes on the base paths. Guys have been playing baseball since they were kids and yet still make mistakes running the bases on a fairly regular basis. My question is why? How hard can it be and what happened to running hard? I really don't get it!
Sacramento Kings fans are getting impatient. They want some action on the trade front. My response...relax. It's the middle of August. If we are having this discussion two months from now then ok. Do you believe the rumors that LeBron James nixed a Buddy Hield deal to the Lakers? Hield and Marvin Bagley appear to be on the market. The question is what would the Kings get in return? As they say, stay tuned!
Brett McMurphy of Action Network joins me to preview the college football season. We talk SEC and the Alabama Crimson Tide along with the Pac 12 and his favorites. Brett also discusses with me his take on the future of college football as it relates to super conferences. What will happen to the Big 12 now that Oklahoma and Texas are heading to the SEC? Brett also previews the many candidates for the Heisman Trophy . As always I have the Crowd Ultra Q n A plus Grant's Rant focusing on the Sacramento Kings!
Talk about overreaction. Justin Fields of the Chicago Bears made his preseason debut against the Miami Dolphins Saturday. The rookie QB of Ohio St went 14-20 for 142yds and a TD. He also rushed the ball 5 times for 33 yards and a score. Some in the Chicago media and fans are hyping his performance as the greatest thing since deep dish pizza. Can we relax for a second? Can we at least watch Fields play in a regular season game before anointing him as a future Hall of Famer?
After the Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers kicked off the preseason at the Hall of Fame game all the NFL teams are in action this weekend. Are you really watching these games? Is there anything more boring than preseason football? Didn't we learn anything from last year that no preseason is a good preseason? You should be rooting for one thing...no injuries. That's what makes a good preseason!
Ernie Johnson Jr of TNT recently addressed the Alabama football team. His message was simple. There's value in everybody. You will be able to listen to the entire speech, one of the best five minute messages I've ever heard. Ernie ended the speech by saying "be a better human". I also talk about Lift Every Voice and Sing, often referred to as the Black national anthem. I read excerpts both pro and con, from media members around the country. The Black national anthem will be played before every NFL regular season game this season.
Skip Bayless of FS1 went after Dallas Cowboys Head Coach Mike McCarthy yesterday over his weight. His colleague Jenny Taft criticized Bayless to his face over the stupid comment. My rant is very simple. Do you like Skip Bayless? Do you know anyone who likes the guy? How does he make a reported $7 million dollars a year? Is there anyone in sports media that makes more ridiculous comments that Bayless? Anything for ratings I guess.
What a scene in Slovenia yesterday as the Dallas Mavericks Luka Doncic signed a 5 year extension worth $207 million. Luka said he had no doubt in his mind he'd sign the deal. Yeah no kidding! Mavs owner Mark Cuban couldn't control himself in gushing over Wonder Boy....but that's the way it is now. Ya just can't sign a player, you now have to kiss their ass! Here's what I do know...I haven't seen Luka win a playoff series yet. Rick Carlisle is gone, there is a new front office and there are no more excuses. Yes Luka is a great talent, but it's time he starts winning on the NBA stage!
What an embarrassment for the Colorado Rockies. The organization handled an alleged racial slur at their game on Sunday as poorly as possible. A fan was yelling for mascot "Dinger" and they and others thought the fan was yelling a racial slur. Their statement after the game was embarrassing! I talk about that plus a statement by Tony Clark of the MLBPA which was just as bad. I also share a story about hanging with Peyton Manning one night in Indianapolis. Last, but not least the awful TV ratings from the Tokyo Olympics are announced. What's the reason for that and so many other sporting events losing viewers?
The NBA Summer League is underway In Las Vegas. I've always thought it's pretty much a big waste of time with the exception for one, or two players on each roster. The NBA has turned Las Vegas into a big event so it's not going anywhere, but most of the games are so boring. With that being said if a player is going to be a good NBA player they better excel in Vegas. If not your favorite team probably made a mistake on draft night.
Team USA wins Gold at the Tokyo Olympics in basketball. Two weeks ago Gregg Popovich didn't know how to coach anymore, the team hadn't practiced enough, blah, blah, blah. The bottom line is the best basketball in the world is played here in the USA . I'm not sure why there is even any talk about it. Both the men's and women's team once again showed their superiority to the world. Imagine if the US sent it's 12 best players to compete in the Olympics like they did with the Dream Team in '92? Anyone still talking about the loss to Nigeria last month in exhibition play? Didn't think so!
Every year I hear about how great rookie Quarterbacks look in practice. Wake me up when the games begin. QB's don't get hit in practice and see the same defense every day. I'm glad that Trey Lance of the San Francisco 49ers looks like the real deal, but can we please wait until we see him against "real" NFL defenses? How long will it be before we even see him play? Jimmy Garoppolo is the starter and if he plays well and the 49ers are winning don't expect to see much of Lance this season.
The NFL began exhibition play with last night's Hall of Fame game between the Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers. That's the good news, but there seems to be some serious issues with the league's Covid-19 protocols. Several players have voiced their displeasure with the league, coaches have come down hard on their unvaccinated players and already many players have missed practice due to the league's Covid protocol. What happens when they start playing games for real? Look at the QB's who have missed action already including Lamar Jackson and Kirk Cousins. I also talk about fans...are we really sure we will have full stadiums this fall with the rise in cases across the country? I also spend a few minutes talking about this weekend's Hall of Fame inductees including Tom Flores, Drew Pearson, Harold Carmichael and Peyton Manning
