Notes and Links to Kiese Laymon's Work   Kiese Laymon is a Black southern writer from Jackson, Mississippi. Laymon is the Libbie Shearn Moody Professor of English and Creative Writing at Rice University. Laymon is the author of Long Division, which won the 2022 NAACP Image Award for fiction, and the essay collection, How to Slowly Kill Yourself and Others in America, named a notable book of 2021 by the New York Times critics. Laymon's bestselling memoir, Heavy: An American Memoir, won the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction, the Christopher Isherwood Prize for Autobiographical Prose, the Barnes and Noble Discovery Award, the Austen Riggs Erikson Prize for Excellence in Mental Health Media, and was named one of the 50 Best Memoirs of the Past 50 Years by The New York Times. He is the founder of The Catherine Coleman Literary Arts and Justice Initiative, a program based out of the Margaret Walker Center at Jackson State University, aimed at aiding young people in Jackson get more comfortable reading, writing, revising and sharing on their own terms, in their own communities. The Denver Nuggets could feel the effects of this late start as they struggled to find their consistency from jump street. But when all else fails, Nikola Jokic comes to the rescue. Jokic had the dagger and Braun added the cherry on top. The Nuggets won 122-108 in the 1st of a 3 game road trip.

The Knicks coming off a 3 game losing streak came out the gate struggling. The talent, speed and pace of the Kings overwhelmed the Knicks in the first half. Slowing Brunson down with double teams and traps, the Knicks needed to find other sources for scoring and so they did. Josh Hart finished with 31 pts 8 asts and 9 rebs, Divencenzo tallied 21 pts and Brunson ultimately was able to dissect the defense with 35 pts and 11 asts. After hearing news of Julius Randle being out for the season its seemed as if there was an impending doom to this team, as if things were on there way downhill but this team will not be beat without a fighting chance and they proved it with this game. After being down most of the game the Knicks beat the Kings the way they knew how, tough defense leading to offense and being physical with the opposing team. On today's episode I compare this era of Kings basketball with what happened in the late 90's and the turn of the century. Last season very few people expected the Kings to be a playoff team and yet they finished 3rd in the West. In 1998-99 the Kings made the playoffs in an abbreviated 50 game season as a 7th seed. Not many thought the Kings would make the postseason that year, but it ended up being the start of a long run of success. I see many similarities between this Kings team and the ones from the "glory" years more than 20 seasons ago. The question is will this era of Kings basketball led by DeAaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis be able to go further than the teams with Bibby, Webber, Vlade, Peja and company?
