Book 6, Chapter 28: Flight Of The Prince
With Pope and Milk out, Bison, House, and Rooster kickoff a fiery episode dominated by the fallout from a wild MLB trade deadline. The crew breaks down the biggest winners, like the Mariners and Phillies, and the most aggressive movers, like the Padres, who mortgaged their future for a serious "win-now" roster. This sparks a larger conversation that contrasts the success of low-payroll, well-built teams like the Brewers and Marlins with the struggles of high-payroll, undisciplined squads like the Yankees, who have one of the worst records in baseball since June 1st. A quick mention of one of our sponsors... the show would not be complete without Injury Board, an exclusive networking and marketing firm that connects and refers cases among the best plaintiffs' lawyers in the country. If you're a leader in your community and at the bar, consider checking out InjuryBoard.org for membership and referral opportunities. The conversation also touches on an injury scare for Shohei Ohtani, and a new MLB attendance record set at Bristol Motor Speedway. The second half pivots to fantasy football, where the guys (reluctantly) offer strategic advice for drafting wide receivers and tight ends, debating the value of top-tier talent versus finding sleepers in a deep pool of players. House brings up a fascinating look at the surprising real-world influence of Madden NFL video game ratings on players and even front-office decisions. Also, if you're looking for a company to develop your website and digital marketing, Digital Law Marketing offers exclusive regional partnerships, unlike other companies that might prioritize marketing competitors. Their proven results have led to significant increases in organic originations. Go to DigitalLawMarketing.com for details.Punches will go to the Pirates and the Yankees, and they share a "lasso" moment regarding the Twins for a classy gesture of goodwill. The guys wrap it up with a heartfelt pour out for the late Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg.Special thanks to Assembly Software is a huge part of how the guys keep this show going. It's known for its leading case management product, TrialWorks, and its cloud-based solution, Neos. Neos allows law firms to access everything on the road and now features an AI program to enhance efficiency in tasks like drafting letters. Check out AssemblySoftware.com for more information.

Nick opens the show with a heartfelt tribute to Ryne Sandberg, honoring the legacy of the Hall of Famer and longtime Cubs icon, who passed away earlier this week. Sandberg's impact on Chicago baseball is remembered with affection and admiration. Then, Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy return to break down this week's movie releases. They dive into the psychological horror film Together, the new reboot of The Naked Gun starring Liam Neeson, and the sequel to the animated satire The Bad Guys 2, weighing in on whether these films live up to the originals or crash and burn. Later, Esmeralda Leon joins Nick to talk about the recent wave of celebrity deaths, including Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Hulk Hogan, and Ozzy Osbourne. While the losses are somber, they quickly shift gears into a much lighter mood, sharing excitement and plans for their upcoming appearances at Flashback Weekend, where horror, nostalgia, and mayhem await. This one's from the heart. In this episode, I take time to reflect on the passing of my childhood hero, Ryne Sandberg — and the impact he had not just on the Cubs, but on me personally. Ryno wasn't just a great player. He was my player. And this week hit hard.
The trade deadline is almost here, and we're still waiting for the Phillies to do something. They will. It remains the expectation anyway. We talk about the closers and bats on the market, including St. Louis' Ryan Helsley and Arizona's Eugenio Suárez. That's two rentals for 2025. Sound good? No? How many prospects do the Phillies want to sacrifice to get them?We share our memories of Ryne Sandberg, who died on Monday. Ruben hired Sandberg as Phillies manager in 2013. This week, we remember Cubs legend Ryne Sandberg and reflect on the grace and grit that made him unforgettable, both on the field and in his iconic 2005 Hall of Fame speech. Then we dissect Elliott's shocking (and possibly permanent?) extension, brace for Thursday's trade deadline chaos, and dive into Bryce Harper's public challenge to Rob Manfred, which spirals into a full-blown salary cap (and floor) debate. This week on the Daly Dose, we reviewed another summer “sports” movie, and it has been a very rough week for Gen X'ers with the losses of Ryne Sandberg, Hulk Hogan and Ozzy Osbourne. Who makes our list and who will get left off? Finally, every year the NFL ignores the game tape of so many quarterbacks and instead chooses to rely on traits that might not be as important! The death of “Ryno” hit people hard. The Hall of Famer bonded generations of Cubs fans who watched him perform at Wrigley Field and on the WGN superstation. More than that, though, Ryne Dee Sandberg carried himself with grace and humility, playing the game the right way, as he so eloquently described in a memorable Cooperstown speech. For perspective, The Athletic's Sahadev Sharma and Patrick Mooney describe a somber scene in the postgame clubhouse and the connection felt by the current group of Cubs.Download the DraftKings Sportsbook app and use code FOUL to get $150 in bonus bets with a $5 bet! #DKPartnerGo to Surfshark.com/foul or use code FOUL at checkout to get 4 extra months of Surfshark VPN! With the trade deadline mere tens of hours away (is that a thing?) David Brown and Andy discuss the risks of showcasing players you are trying to trade in the final games before the deadline, the costs of trading for rental players, trying to win and sell at the same time, and the varied personalities of GMs and how that affects trades. They also discuss Jed Hoyer's new contract, the chicken and egg of sports betting scandals and the passing of Cubs icon Ryne Sandberg.
In this heartfelt episode, Fran Spielman and Pat Hughes commemorate the life and career of legendary Cubs player Ryne Sandberg, who recently passed away from prostate cancer at 65. The episode also features a past interview with Sandberg, offering further glimpses into his philosophy and approach to the game.

From batnips to ice-themed villains and the not-so-subtle campiness, Joel Schumacher's neon-soaked superhero spectacle dives deep into the wacky world of Gotham City's dynamic duo as they face off against Mr. Freeze and Poison Ivy. Batman & Robin stands as one of cinema's most notorious cautionary tales about franchise excess. What began as Warner Bros' attempt to create the ultimate summer blockbuster became a $125 million lesson in how beloved characters can be transformed into walking toy advertisements. From George Clooney's regretful reflections on his rubber nipples to Arnold Schwarzenegger's $25 million payday for delivering ice puns, this production reads like a masterclass in studio interference gone wrong.Schumacher's vision clashed with studio demands for maximum merchandising, costume designers prioritized sculpted anatomy over actor comfort, and how plot came a distinct second to ensuring characters and vehicles were as toyetic as possible. While Batman & Robin effectively killed the franchise for nearly a decade, its spectacular failure directly influenced Christopher Nolan's grounded Dark Knight trilogy and fundamentally changed how studios approach superhero properties. What an incredible legacy for one movie to have! I would love to hear your thoughts on Batman & Robin !Verbal Diorama is now an award-winning podcast! When we think of movies with Hollywood defining legacies, Mr. & Mrs. Smith wouldn't be the first that springs to mind.A fun, comedic mid-2000s action flick, capitalising on the chemistry of its two stunningly beautiful leads; it became the movie that defined a generation of celebrity culture, and sold hundreds of thousands of gossip magazines. But it all could have been very different, had it not been for The Stepford Wives. The film's inception, a chaotic filming schedule that resulted in significant budget overruns, and a constantly changing script pale in comparison to the media circus that followed Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, affectionately given the portmanteau 'Brangelina', and how their relationship flourished as they played married assassins; oblivious to each other's secret lives until they're pitted against one another to finish their respective jobs. Not to mention his previous marriage failing at about the same time they were filming this movie - surely it's all a coincidence?Their journey from co-stars to Hollywood power couple to eventually married and sharing six children would not lead to their happily ever after, unlike John and Jane Smith.I would love to hear your thoughts on Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005) !Verbal Diorama is now an award-winning podcast! What happens when Hollywood egos, sabotage campaigns, and directorial chaos collide in the Arizona desert? Tombstone is a film that survived one of the most tumultuous productions in Western movie history to become a beloved cult classic. You think the gunfight at the O.K. Corral was dramatic? That's nothing compared to Kevin Costner's alleged studio sabotage campaign, the director who got fired just one month into filming, and how Kurt Russell allegedly secretly took over directing duties while refusing to put his name on the film. A bitter rivalry with Costner's competing Wyatt Earp nearly killed Tombstone before it reached cinemas, and Val Kilmer's career-defining performance as Doc Holliday only really happened because of studio interference, which came from Costner's attempt to derail the production. From the scorching Arizona heat, to the replacement director brought in with just three days of preparation; a director who made the cinematographer quit three times, as well as various other crew members, Tombstone is a masterclass in how great movies can emerge from absolute production disasters. It's a tale of Hollywood hardball, Western justice, and that sometimes your worst enemy can accidentally become your greatest asset.I would love to hear your thoughts on Tombstone (1993) !Verbal Diorama is now an award-winning podcast! Cutthroat Island has quite the reputation. It's known as the infamous pirate flick that sank a studio, as well as the entire pirate genre, but that's not completely true. In many ways, Cutthroat Island might just be more of a misunderstood gem, that happens to have been created when Carolco Pictures was at the very end of its life - mired in debt, and struggling to stay afloat. Cutthroat Island was its last chance. Cutthroat Island was never the reason Carolco fell into bankruptcy, but it didn't exactly help matters either. It is true that the movie faced a storm of production woes, casting drama, and a box office disaster that left it walking the plank. Female-led action movies like Cutthroat Island often face harsher scrutiny than their male counterparts. But Cutthroat Island also deserves a second look, showcasing epic stunts, lush visuals, huge pyrotechnics, and a swashbuckling adventure that's way more fun than its critics would have you believe. It's time to navigate the choppy waters of pirate cinema, and explore why it's high time we give this movie more love! In 1999, Stan Winston Studios and Digital Domain joined forces to create one of cinema's most convincing monsters - the massive crocodile from "Lake Placid." Winston's team, fresh off "Jurassic Park," built a groundbreaking 30-foot animatronic that could actually function underwater using waterproofed hydraulics and urethane skin - a technical marvel that had previously destroyed lesser movie creatures. With snapping jaws, moving eyes, and a thrashing tail, this mechanical beast terrorized actors in the frigid lakes of British Columbia while creating genuine fear on set.Digital Domain seamlessly handled what the animatronic couldn't, crafting stunning CGI sequences of the crocodile diving and surfacing with explosive water effects. This hybrid approach - blending Winston's tactile craftsmanship with cutting-edge computer graphics - produced just under four minutes of unforgettable screen time. Weather delays, waterproofing challenges, and the genius of two legendary effects houses brought Lake Placid to life, but in a crowded summer of 1999, this croc would struggle to dominate the box office, instead becoming a cult classic creature feature.I would love to hear your thoughts on Lake Placid !Verbal Diorama is now an award-winning podcast! In 1997, Anaconda slithered into cinemas with a shocking secret: every second of computer-generated snake footage cost $100,000 to create. This wasn't just another creature feature—it was Sony Pictures Imageworks' first fully computer-animated character and a technical nightmare that pushed both digital and practical effects to their limits. To mitigate that cost, and to the benefit of this movie, they decided to rely heavily on practical animatronic snakes. The real hero of this movie was Walt Conti, whose company Edge Innovations faced an impossible challenge: creating two colossal animatronic snakes that could actually swim. Drawing on his experience with aquatic mammals, like the whales of Free Willy, Conti engineered a waterproof marvel requiring ten puppeteers to operate, with pre-programmed movements. The legacy of Anaconda extends far beyond its box office success and Jon Voight's memorably unhinged performance. This film helped launch Jennifer Lopez's movie career and established the template for "so bad it's good" cinema. But is it really "so bad it's good"? The final of five special episodes to celebrate this podcast's 300th episode, focused on J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy epic The Lord of the Rings, this episode goes into what happened after The Lord of the Rings - namely The Hobbit trilogy, The Lord of the Rings: the Rings of Power, and the various struggled with the rights, plus multiple lawsuits that were filed after The Lord of the Rings. The possibility of losing the rights led to New Line and Warner Bros fast-tracking The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, itself an ambitious anime that needed help from 60 international animation studios to get finished on time. This is the end. The everlasting legacy of The Lord of the Rings, from Tolkien's stories, through each adaptation we've gone into, to this, the end of all things. It's time to drop the One Ring into the fires of Mordor and think about how far we've come...This episode is Part five of a five-part group of episodes. You probably should take a listen to the previous episode(s), if you haven't!I would love to hear your thoughts on The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim & The legacy of The Lord of the Rings [Part 5 of 5] Verbal Diorama is now an award-winning podcast! Book 6, Chapter 25: The Seer Overheard
In the fourth of five special episodes to celebrate this podcast's 300th episode, focused on J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy epic The Lord of the Rings, and we're diving deep into the epic finale of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Return of the King. The Return of the King had a monumental impact on the film industry, and epic box office success, raking in over $1.1 billion worldwide. The film swept the Academy Awards, winning all 11 nominations, including Best Picture, a feat shared only with Titanic and Ben-Hur. But it's not all awards and box office records; it's an incredible journey of characters we love, breathtaking visual effects, and the unforgettable musical score by Howard Shore, which has left an indelible mark on cinema. This episode also goes into the incredible work by Weta Workshop on the rest of the visual effects, plus the award-winning hair, make-up and prosthetics.Peter Jackson proved unfilmable material was not only filmable, but that he could create a cinematic trilogy masterpiece with an inimitable legacy, that even he himself couldn't match again, but I'll come back to that next episode. This episode is Part 3 of a three-part story, as well as Part 4 of a five-part group of episodes. You probably should take a listen to the previous episode(s), if you haven't!I would love to hear your thoughts on The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King [Part 4 of 5] Verbal Diorama is now an award-winning podcast!
